How to copy files from guest directly to second HDD? (while skipping %appdata% on the C: drive)

I recently attempted to copy 60GB of files from an Ubuntu guest to a Windows 8.1 host, but the files were actually copied to 'C:\%appdata%\Local\VMWare\...' first before being copied to D:\ (where all my VMs are saved and where I specified it should copy the files to). After it finished copying, I went into the VMware local %appdata% folder and manually deleted the folder with all the files, but the space is still taken up even though the files are 'deleted' and I'm out of 60GB on an SSD (but that's another problem). Is there a way to skip the part where it copies the files to the %appdata% folder first and just have it copy directly to D:\?

More info:

VMware is installed where it should be by default (on C:\ and in the 32-bit program files)

Everything else is on my HDD (D:\, all my files and VMs are located there)

Hello,

I have a question about the Physical memory on my virtual machine. Only 3071 MB of physical memory is allocated as max even as I have set 8192 MB as max in the settings. Are there a additional setting I need to do ?

Please help!

Cheers

Ubutnu ip address same as host

Hi.I also am completely new to VMware Player which I am using for Ubuntu 12.04.

My Host computer is Windows Server 2008.

This is network setting for host computer:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

On Ubuntu I need to have same address as my host computer(192.168.1.100). When I set NAT option in  VMware Player, Ubuntu does not have internet.

What I need to do to get same address as host?

Thanks!

Kernel headers not found

I have tried searching all over for a solution but have been unable to find one that works.

I am running CentOS 7 and am trying to install VMware Workstation 7.  Whenever I try to start vmware it says that it cant find the needed kernel headers and asks me to browse for them.  For every location I try it says "C header files matching your running kernel were not found".

I have installed the following:

What is the correct directory that I am supposed to point the Kernel Module Updater to? Is there something else that I am missing?

Internal Error (WinsCard.dll ? )

Hi folks.   I"m  running the VmwarePlayer 6.0.3   build-1895310

virtual Machine:

Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600, Service Pack 3

@ the Host computer:

DELL XPS  Win 8.1  x64

Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3601 Mhz,

4 kärnor, 8 logiska processorer

And the host machine had some trouble lately, with some specific dll files. Someone installed applications that messed up things, or other conflict issue.
So in order to analyze some processes running on the Win 8.1 machine I usally turn on my virtual machine (XP)
wich has some msdebug /developer tools at it. But suddenly when trying to start the vmwareplayer this shows up !

http://i62.tinypic.com/2rw2ezs.jpg

So it concern the WinsCard.dll  and others as this topic shows:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"WinSCard.dll" of Microsoft-Windows-SmartCardSubsystemClient,Version=6.3.9600.16408, pA =
Cannot repair member file [l:36{18}]"Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB" of prncacla.inf,

=  I did some attempts of repairing this. with some commands on the host:

C:\Windows\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031

And it seems to work! I could succesful start vmware player, but when trying to  power up my machine it says internal error:

12.jpg

Hot to fix this !?
There must be some sort of maintance , repair to do on the virtualmachine?

Some essential of the logfile found at  AppData\Local\Temp\vmware-RIHTT =  didnt copy it all because security reasons but heres some info about the attempt starting the vdkm:

Guest display split into identical panes

I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS linux running in a VMWare Player 6 VM, in a Win7 host.

This install has been stable for >2yrs, but after some Ubuntu updates today, my screen now boots into 3 repeated and truncated panes.  See bottom of msg for how the display shows.

I found this VMWare KB article that describes the issue, but I'm unsure this applies to Player6:

VMware KB: Linux Guest Display Splits into Multiple Panes with Identical Content

I had installed VMWare Tools using the Player controls, but running the prescribed command in Ubuntu terminal:

sudo vmware-config-tools.pl --overwritesvga

....doesn't do anything, just gets me to the man pages for this config package.

Help appreciated!  I'm unable to use this VM as is.

VMware Player on Mageia 4

I am unable to install VMware-Player-6.0.3-1895310.x86_64.bundle on Mageia 4.

I have downloaded it twice, verifying the check sum second time round. Despite making it executable,

it claims the installer is installed but it isn't.

The log is attached.  My reading of it doesn't inspire confidence.

Someone on another newsgroup wrote that java must be installed. It is.

Can someone help?

unable to load hypervisor due to OVF. OVF to VMX

Hi I am trying to load a version of Websohere hypervisor which is a ovf format but it isnt working and I keep getting this error....

" did not pass OVF specification conformance or virtual hardware compliance checks.

Click Retry to relax OVF specification and virtual hardware compliance checks and try the import again, or click Cancel to cancel the import. If you retry the import, you might not be able to use the virtual machine in VMware Player."

My understanding was that I needed to convert the ovf to vmx!

I ve tried using the ovf tool to convert to .vmx but that also isnt working. I get the following error when trying to convert....

"Error: Failed to open OVF descriptor"

If anyone could shed some light that would be great,

thanks,

Scott

(Any)Linux host crashes and reboots(kernel oops)

$

My Linux HOST system has suffered crashes(kernel oops) due to VMware Player(Workstation) for a long time.

Ubuntu-CentOS-Debian Stable all of them keep crashing..

OS:Ubuntu 14.04LTS KDE 4.14.0 64bit

OS:CentOS 6.5 64bit

Description in details:

1)Installation:SUCCESS                    ->VMplayer(or Workstation) installs and builds the appropriate modules without any issue.Modules keep loading perfectly everytime the machines boots.

2)Virtual machine Creation:SUCCESS-> Virtual machines-whether is a Linux distro or Windows Guest- are created with absolute success.

3)The very FIRST time(after a Host boot) a vmachine starts loading-:SUCCESS-> The very first time(after the Host OS has just booted and loaded) any  Guest OS loads in success

Kernel Ooops

1) VMplayer is on air and the Guest OS works perfectly. If I suspend the HOST and wake it up then either it(HOST OS)hangs with black screen(keyboard-mouse dont react) or REBOOTS.

It can be reproduced EVERYTIME.

2)I suspend Host OS and then I wake it up-Success.I open VMplayer and start any Guest OS.The time Guest starts loading HOST crashes and reboots immediately.

It can be reproduced EVERYTIME.

3)If I suspend Guest(from Player menu) and then try to load it,HOST crashes and REBOOTS

It can be reproduced randomly-sometimes it fails sometimes not

Conclusion:

While-as long as the Guest OS loads in success-the whole HOST and Guest Systems and the VMplayer are stable and run without any issues,if i SUSPEND/RESUME the HOST this is where problems occure.

3D Acceleration has no impact on this.1,2 and 3 statements can be reproduced whether Nvidia blob is loaded(accel:ON) or not(Nouveau)(accel:OFF).

CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo 3GHz(Intel VT-x)

MB:Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3V

RAM: 8G

Graphics:Nvidia Geforce 430GT(Nvidia blob OR Nouveau)

French Keyboard Layout problem in DOS-Box of Windows 98 first edition (guest).

$

Hi !

In short: It is exactly the same problem as : https://communities.vmware.com/message/400354 but the thread is now close. For myself, it concern a French Keyboard.

For example, AltGr + 8 do nothing (it expects to print a "\" backslash instead).

Or, shift + "*" print a "£" pound sign (it expects to print a "µ" character instead).

Of course, Alt + 92 works fine and give me a "\" backslash...

I'm running VM Player 6.0.3 on Win8 (not VM Workstation 5.5 as mention in the previous thread) and the guest OS is Windows 98 first edition.

Keyboard is O.K. on Windows, buggy in DOS-box.

I've tried the given answer ... but at offset 0xB1 (261 octal) in the .nvram file I found a 0 ... not a 0x92 or 0x82 !

Is there a solution using Workstation to edit the .nvram file (BIOS information) ? Something else ?

Thanks in advance,

Alex.

fcoe on vmplayer.

I have installed fcoe on VMPlayer, Centos 6.5. When I try to look for the target on the initiator using "fcoeadm -t", I get nothing found. I then installed Wireshark on both systems and started them up on eth0. Now fcoe starts working. If I stop Wireshark on either of the two machines, fcoe stops working. I am using NAT as a network adapter.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

Thanks,

Kevin.

screen graphics problem in OSX Mountain Lion- VMWare Player on Windows

WIndows 7 or Windows XP, when using VMWare Player with Mac OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks there is a graphics layout problem.

I noticed this already on two occasions:

  1. in System Preferences when trying to change the personal image for the users and groups. You can see your own image but when trying to change the image the drop down page only shows a blank page. Nevertheless there is content. When you tic on the blank page you can change the image but without any visual reference.
  2. I tried iWeb Design in Mac OSX Mavericks. The same situation. When choosing a layout you see a blank page but there is content. Trying to add an image or text still results in a blank page on screen.

Any idea how to fix this?

Problems with Synaptics touchpad not able to scroll in Guest OS (Windows XP)

$

I have an HP Pavilion laptop running VMware player 3.0.0 build-203739 with VMware tools. The guest is Windows XP. The Synaptics touch pad works in the guest but the scroll region does not scroll. Device manager shows a HID-compliant mouse and VMware Pointing Device. Installed in the Mouse and other pointing devices category.

Has anyone been able to get the scroll region to work? I tried using the manufacturers drivers but VMware didn't like that and it gave me the BSOD repeatedly until I removed the Synaptic drivers. I tried to search the Web, FAQ's, and support site but didn't find any useful information.

I like using VMware Player but it is a bit of a pain to not have the scroll on the touchpad.

Thanks for the help.

Maximum COM port speed 128000 in virtual machine?

$

We use software that talks to an external device via a COM port, at 921600 baud. We tried running the software on a virtual machine but the fastest we can configure the port is 128000. Why is this? (The same happens with Microsoft Virtual PC). Both the host PC and the virtual PC are running WIndows 7.

What's best for top performance?

$

Hi Everyone,

Like a lot of people I use Windows and Linux. I tend to use Windows for office type stuff and programs for which I can't find a Linux equivalent,  and I use Linux (Ubuntu) for everything else. I have read that it's important to run the virtual machine from a different physical disk to the host OS.

My computer is a Sony Vaio laptop with Intel core i5 CPU with 6GB RAM. I have tried different ways of running VMware Player such as:

1. Host OS - Windows 8 on internal HDD and Ubuntu guest on separate partition on internal HDD

2. Ubuntu host on internal HDD and Windows 8 guest on internal HDD

3. Ubuntu host running from external USB HDD and WIndows guest on internal HDD (my current setup)

My question is, with my current computer and requirements what's the best option for performance? I know I could run benchmarks etc but that would mean lots of work to setup each method to find a winner. I was hoping someone here would be able to give a definitive answer.

By the way, I know I could dual boot but I prefer using VM's

Thanks

Richard

Ubuntu unreliable mouse since vmware tools update

$

Hi,

Since I have updated vmware tools on my ubuntu 14.04 LTS virtual machine, my mouse is behaving unreliable. When moving it, it flickers between the pointer and the hand/text select tool. It also jump to the upper left corner while selecting or typing. The problem did not exist before. And it also exists on a new image I just created.

Is there a solution for this problem, or a way to downgrade vmware tools?
