Windows Bottom Bar unavailable..

My windows XP server machine i just ported using the vmware vConverter center seems to be working fine, at the exception that i do not chose my users anymore, and that it goes directly to a user that most of the settings were locked.

That being said, i cannot open a terminal or anything, and the boot proceess, i do not see a black screen at all it just directly goes to the wndows screen..

Any possibilities here on why this is not actually working ?

I actually just need to go change this VM ip so that users can keep on logging from distance (remote desktop).

I have to mention windows does now tell me that my windows is not genuine, while i am pretty sure it was before as i never got any of those message on the actual physical machine.

Shared folder restrictions not respected, major security problem with Player.

$

Summary: it's possible to transfer files freely between host and VMs, without being restricted to declared Shared Folders.

I'm running VMWare Player 6.0.3 + Tools under Win7/32, in general without problems. However, I've just discovered what seems to be a major security issue; it may have been there for years, I never checked. On both a CentOS Linux VM and a Windows XP VM I have set Shared Folders to Always enabled; two folders are shared, C:\Users\<name>\Desktop\VMWare (a subdirectory on the desktop) and R:\ (a RAM drive). "Map as a network drive in Windows guests" is ticked in the Windows VM. There is no option for one folder to be always shared, the other only until next poweroff (re point 2 below). I made a few tests, and was easily able to drag and drop files from both VMs (running one at a time) to the host WITHOUT RESTRICTION TO THE SHARED FOLDERS; I copied files from VM desktop to host desktop (not the declared "VMWare" directory), from host desktop to VM desktop, and from a random host directory (C:\TMP) to the VM and then back to the host desktop.

1. Serious, major issue: the VM seems to have free run of the host, not just the shared directories.

2. Minor point: the VMX file (all sharedFolder entries listed below) indicates <sharedFolder0.expiration = "session"> but <sharedFolder1.expiration = "never">; shouldn't they be the same, "never" as Shares Folders are Always enabled?

I have set shared folders up only via Settings, not direct VMX editing. The VMX has:

sharedFolder.maxNum = "2"

sharedFolder0.present = "TRUE"

sharedFolder0.enabled = "TRUE"

sharedFolder0.readAccess = "TRUE"

sharedFolder0.writeAccess = "TRUE"

sharedFolder0.hostPath = "C:\Users\<name>\Desktop\VMWare"

sharedFolder0.guestName = "Xfer"

sharedFolder0.expiration = "session"

sharedFolder1.present = "TRUE"

sharedFolder1.enabled = "TRUE"

sharedFolder1.readAccess = "TRUE"

sharedFolder1.writeAccess = "TRUE"

sharedFolder1.hostPath = "R:\"

sharedFolder1.guestName = "RamDrive"

sharedFolder1.expiration = "never"

This worries me; I sometimes deliberately try to expose VMs to viruses, in the expectation that there is a Chinese wall between host and VM, save for the shared directories.

Am I dong something wrong, is this expected behaviour, or is it a VMWare Player error?

Best wishes

Player Pro in Unity with two monitors, primary being on the right, assumes taskbar to be on the left monitor when maximising windows

Hi,

basically my question is all there in the title. I am using Player Pro 6.0.4, host system is Windows 7 and guest is CentOs.

I am using two monitors and i have the one on the right as primary monitor meaning it is the one with a taskbar. Yet, when i enter Unity and then maximize any (except the original one of course) of the resulting windows on my left screen, it will leave room for a taskbar (which is not there) while when i maximize them on the right monitor, they cover the taskbar. So apparently, the windows do actually know the size and orientation of my taskbar but seem to assume the primary monitor allways to be on the left. All native Windows windows, including the main VMWare Player window of course, maximize as expected: Full screen on the left monitor and leaving room for the taskbar on the right one.

Am i missing some setting? Is it somehow possible to tell Player what parts of the screen it can use for Unity windows? Is this a bug or is it so unusual to make the right monitor primary that i should just deal with it?

Thanks a lot.

Robert

Missing /dev/vmmon with player 6.0.4 and CentOS 6.6

Hi,

at first I updated to CentOS 6.6 and got the problem posted in Cannot start services after update to CentOS 6.6 .

Then I updated to vmplayer 6.0.4. When I now try to start my virtual Windows 7, I get the error message, that /dev/vmmon does not exist. This is true.

How can I load vmmon?

Greetings!

Hi,

I am using VMPlayer 6.0.3. I would be upgrading the RAM of my host computer shortly. I use a Windows 7 host. All my VMs have the latest VMTools installed.

I wanted to know of the configuration changes I need to do to my VMs which can enhance the performance of the VMs.

I also need to know of any changes so as to avoid a negative impact on running the VMs.

I'm running VMware player..

Use the following link paragraph #1 to set up VMware environment: http://www.oratraining.com/blog/2013/03/installing-11g-release-2-real-application-clusters-11gr2-rac-on-linux-x86-64-virtual-machine-vm-step-by-step-installation-guide/

1. Added second network adapter host-only to the VM.

2. Started Linux VM and changed IPs in eth0 and eth1 to static IPS

3. My windows host is not on the network.

4. Whe I ping dhost1 I get IP different from the one I set up in eth0.

Will I be able to set up VM environment like in the link above using my WMware player and having host not on the network?

Thank you in advance.

o webmin-squid

o calamaris -- Log analyzer

o sarg -- Squid analysis report generator

o webmin-sarg

o srg -- Detailed log analysis for squid

o squid-cgi -- Cache manager interface

==============================

Quick instructions (HOWTO):

- Fire up the VM

- Hit Alt-F5 and you can watch the bandwidth monitor

Hit Alt+F1, LOGIN AS root and ** CHANGE THE PASSWORDS!! 1st thing **

Client-side instructions:

- Set ALL of your browser's Cache setting really low, like to 5-8 MB - and Delete it!  Huge disk space savings!

-  Point your browser's Proxy setting to the VM's IP address ( default  10.0.244.250 , port 3128 ) - you can point it to the DHCP address for  fast/temporary testing (issue ' ifconfig ' at the root or User prompt to  see the squid VM's DHCP IP address) or change it to whatever matches  your home network. I put it as a Class A address by default so it  matches my home setup and ((hopefully)) shouldn't interfere with other  setups.

--Note  that this is a security feature as well.  I have my home net setup as a  Class A with all-static IPs, and everybody (browsers, Win updates, and apt-get) talks  to Squid.  Squid is usually the only box that has a DHCP address from  the router so it can talk to the Internet.

--  Now here's the neat thing - multiple PCs on your network can have  *multiple browsers* - Firefox, Chrome, Opera, IE, Safari, Lynx, etc all  pointing to the Squid proxy, and it will cache and filter ( ad- and some  porn-sites, user definable ) requests for *everybody.*

--  You know how AdBlock Plus works in Firefox?  Squid does something very  similar, only it does it for ANY browser.  Somebody loads the Yahoo  website? Well now you'll get it to load -faster- for you because it will  be pulled from the Squid cache.  Virus updates, ad-aware, apt-get and  Windows updates should also be faster because they won't have to be  downloaded from the Web multiple times.  ( And yes, pretty much all of  my physical PCs, laptops, and VMs go through my Squid proxy - I'm  "eating my own dog food" here. )

- ACL / file extension filtering:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/squid-content-filter-block-files/

--  There are a *LOT* of config file options; I've done the heavy lifting  and marked up /etc/squid.conf with " xxx " marks wherever things have  been changed, and it should Just Work out of the box.  The maximum  filesize that will get stored in-cache is 20MB, set by me.  If you're a  tweaker though, you can set it up to pretty much store and filter  whatever you want. ( Hint: as root, edit the following in /etc/squid3:  adsblock.txt, porn.txt, notporn.txt -- and then issue ' squiderr ' )

NOTE: For this release, the /etc/squid3/squid.conf file has been drastically reduced in size (most of the in-file documentation is gone) but you can still search for "xxx" and especially "EDIT ME" strings for important values that may need to be changed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For this release, Squid is using the "network lockdown" settings - so it may not work "out of the box" like previous versions did.  Edit /etc/squid3/squid.conf and change the network ACLs to match your setup, then issue ' squiderr '.

--  If you are really anticipating a lot of usage, you should go ahead and  bump up the settings - give the VM 256 MB RAM or more, change /etc/squid3/squid.conf for extra memory and cache space.  You may also need to possibly  tweak some other settings.  Repeat as needed - you can always replace  the 2nd vdisk with a bigger one, or add more disks.

NOTE: ' squid  -kshutdown; sleep 30; squid -z; squid ' will activate the extra disk  space once you are done editing the config file.

-->  Look in /etc/squid3 dir for ad-blocking settings, and don't forget to '  squid -kreconfigure ' ( or ' squiderr ' ) if you change things...

--  Note for people who like SANE text editors, that don't remind you of  EDLIN - I've included Joe (' jstar ', for those of us who actually miss  WordStar), and Midnight Commander, which comes with ' mcedit ' -- you're  NOT limited to VI !!!  The nano editor is installed as well, if you're used to it.

Have fun...

/ Post bug reports - If I don't hear anything for (2) weeks, consider it a full release!

----------------------------

--Things to do every so often to keep the appliance up to date:

o It's a good idea to login as " root " once a month or so and run the ' updt ' script.  This will update installed packages and apply security updates.

Running ' updt ' will also sync up the VM's time/date.

o Check your logs with ' mc /var/log ' and then use F3 to view the log files

o Check free disk space with ' df -h '

o Check RAM free and swapfile usage with ' free '

- Hit Alt-F9 and you can see your uptime with the running " top " virtual console

--I  have had uptimes in excess of 100 days easily with Squid V6 running on  ESXi; you just power it on, and it should pretty much take care of  itself.    However, make sure you limit Squid's memory so the OOM-killer doesn't get you.

./. If you have appreciated my response, please remember to apply Helpful/Correct points. TIA

Upgraded from VMWare Player 6.0.3 to 6.0.4 and now cannot compile kernel for 3.13.0-39-generic. Attempted to install this patch

<http://dandar3.blogspot.com/2014/01/vmware-player-601-on-ubuntu-1404-alpha.html>

and the detailed results are at Ubuntu Pastebin(paste.ubuntu.com/8778444/)

patch fails with

Hunk #3 FAILED at 259.

1 out of 3 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file vmnet-only/filter.c.rej

o backed down to previous kernel(s) -37 and -38 & also tried reinstalling 6.03 - all failed to compile.

Ubuntu 14.04 w/kernel 3.13.0 is an LTS release - why is that VMware Player compiles fail and must be patched every time the kernel is upgraded?

Does anyone have a sucessful patch for 6.0.4 and 3.13.0-30-generic? I would very much like to get my VM's running again.

Win7 64bit guest BSOD on Ubuntu 14.04 & VmWare 6.01 in NAT mode

Hi,

I'm running a Win7 64 bit guest under Ubuntu 14.04 host, with VmWare 6.01.

I keep getting random Blue screen of Death (BSOD) when I switch my network connectivity from Bridged to NAT mode, or when I keep it in NAT mode, and my host changes from Wireless lan to Wired. This doesn't happen everytime, but it is unworkable.

Thanks for helping me getting around this issue. I cannot use bridged mode in my WLAN corporate network.

VM Console is stuck forever during resize desktop

$

Hi,

I have 2 VM's with WIN-7 (32 bit) installation , running simultaneously on the same machine with almost the same settings.

Yet, only one of them has a critical problem of getting stuck during resize desktop on the first "Restore" after a certain amount of time.

The problem occurs on any resolution.

Following is the full scenario :

1) Run VM and login windows. (and do some "usual stuff"...)

2) Suspend VM

3) After some amount of time of not using the VM , preform "Restore" in "full-screen" mode. (usually overnight, but can be less!)

4) Restore seems to works properly, all tasks keep running and VM responds as expected.

5) Resize screen to any dimensions.

Expected result : Console is suppose to get resized to the new dimensions quickly up to a few seconds.

Actual result: Console is "stuck" (not responding) forever! Only "Suspend" is available.

6) Suspend & Restore again immediately ---> Resize works fast as expected, usually less than 0.5 seconds, and anyway not more than a few seconds.

* The problem may occur only on "Suspend & Restore" scenario.  On "Shutdown & Reboot" it works properly.

* As long as it's not getting stuck, it works properly and responds quickly with good performance all the way until "suspend".

* The other VM does NOT have that problem, always works fine!  The only difference I know about is the number of assigned CPU's to each (see settings below)

Main settings :

* Host Machine : CPU - i5-3470 (3.20 GHz) , RAM 8.0 GB , WIN-7 64 bit , Hard-Disk - 1 TB

*VM-1 (Not OK - Stuck!) :     Processors = 1 , RAM = 1.5 GB , Hard-Disk = 150 GB , WIN-7 32 bit

* VM-2 (OK - Never Stuck!):  Processors = 2 , RAM = 1.5 GB , Hard-Disk = 150 GB , WIN-7 32 bit

* VM-Player version : 4.06 build-1035888 (licensed)

* The problem occurs regardless to the other VM, i.e. with and without it running simultaneously.

* I work with 2 screens with different resolutions, but I don't think it has any relevance to the issue :

   * Changing resolution has no effect.

   * Changing screens has not effect.
      (if I exchanged screens between the VM's there's still the same problem with VM-1 on the other screen, while VM-2 is still OK on the primary).

I'd be grateful if anyone would provide the solution.

Thanks in advance,

Ido.

How to succesfully modify the NAT networks addresses?

$

Hello,

My env is as follows:

Host: Windows 7 Prof 64bit / Fedora 20 64bit

VMWare Player version: 6.0.4

Guest: CentOS 6.5 64bit

Networking mode: NAT

What I tried to do is change the address space of the Windows host NAT from whatever it has randomly selected to that used by the Linux host (and which is also hardcoded in the actual application server running within the guest CentOS).

I found these instructions:http://nodsw.com/blog/leeland/2012/02/03-change-vmware-player-networking-settings-especially-nat-subnet-range

Executing the commands goes well, and the configurations (vmnetdhcp.conf, vmnetnat.conf) in C:\ProgramData\VMWare\ looks correct, but as a result after having rebooted the host, and started the guest, I can log on with a SSH-client to the new address (which means that the new network configurations work in this aspect), but from the guest I can not even ping the address from which I am connecting to, and the NAT is not working either.

If I remove the *conf mentioned above, reboot the Windows host and let VMPlayer create new files with new random network for NAT by starting the guest, the NAT works as expected, I can connect to external addresses (such as the yum repositories) and ping the host address.

AFAIK this problem has plagued VMPlayer since 4.0

The reason why I need to manually configure the NAT-value is that as I mentioned before, I'm using the same guest image both in Linux and multiple Windows (I have a Win laptop and a WKS), and I'm running applications which require that I set the listen-address, so the VMPlayer needs to give the same address space in NAT.

Any advice is greatly appreciated,

Poltsi

Upgrade to Player 6.0.1 causes Ctrl-Alt-Enter (fullscreen shortcut) to break

$

Upgraded from Player 5 to v6.0.1 (Win 7 Pro x64 host, Ubuntu 12.04 x64 guest). Now, it boots up the guest in fullscreen mode, but with a small desktop. I *think* it sometimes did this on Player 5, but a couple of Ctrl-Alt-Enters (out-of / back-into fullscreen mode) fixed it.

With Player 6.0.1, Ctrl-Alt-Enter shortcut no longer works (at all), and I have to use the toolbar icon (which works). When I exit the VM (returning to the VM library screen), this window is now as though it was a VM itself (in fullscreen mode with drop-down toolbar; in Player 5 it was just a normal Windows window, which is what it still is in 6.0.1 until you close the VM). When in this state, I *can* Ctrl-Alt-Enter to return it to a normal window and close it. It's as though the VM library window has somehow become a pseudo-VM which is the target for the Ctrl-Alt-Enter shortcut instead of the running VM.

I tried it with 'Return to the VM library after closing a virtual machine' unchecked, but the problem remains.

Anyone else having this issue? Is this a known 6.0.1 issue? Any way of re-enabling Ctrl-Alt-Enter.

Thanks.

Stuart

VMware Player won't boot after Ubuntu Guest Upgrade

$

Hi All,

I upgraded my Ubuntu Guest machine to 14.04 LTS from the guest machine. Things seemed to progress smoothly until I restarted the virtual machine. Now when I start the Virtual Machine I see a few messages about not being able to find files but I'm left with a black screen, no GUI, no CLI prompt. Ultimately I think there is an issue with my graphics adapter but before I get to that point I know I need to install VMware tools on the updated virtual machine. My problem is that I don't know how to get there. Questions: is there a simple way to boot to the command line (I have tried holding the shift key but GRUB doesn't work), is there something I can change in the vmx file that will bypass the GUI on start up?

Any thoughts would be appreciated,

JT

After upgrade to VMWare player 6.0.4, host not reachable from guest

$

I had VMWare player with Windows 7 as host and Ubuntu 14.04 as guest. From guest, i was able to ping host using ip address 192.168.228.1.

Recently upgraded VMWare player to 6.0.4 build-2249910. After upgrade, host is not reachable from guest i.e for 192.168.228.1 not reachable.

On looking at IPv4 properties of VMnet8, saw that ip address was changed to 169.254.18.152. Host became reachable from guest using ip address 169.254.18.152.

Would like to know if this is a bug.
