I have an external hard disk on USB that contains an old Ubuntu Linux installation and its entire directory structure. I know that VMPlayer is installed in it, but I don't know what version it is. Where can I find that information?

By the way, there is something very strange in this forum: I cannot type the letters z and x in the message area. Nothing happens when I type x, and the browser goes back to the previous page in history when I press z. I had to write this elsewhere, then copy/paste. It only happens in this page and only in the message/body textbox. I can type x and z on the topic title entry box without any problem. That's just weird.

New Player won't install on XP box - features not present on CPU

Hi!  VMWare newbie here.  I just got a nice, new workstation.  I thought I could use VMWare Player to shoot an image of my old workstation and import it and have it around just in case.  My old workstation is a 2.4ghz single-core 32-bit box running XPsp3.

I just downloaded VMWare player VMware-player-6.0.4-2237854.exe and tried to run it, I get a splash screen and then an error box:

VMWareError.jpg

So, is there a way to resolve this so I can create an image on my old 32-bit box, move it to my new 64-bit box, and run it happily?

Thanks.

Josh

ps - old box has 512mb RAM if that's the issue

Guest intermittently crashes with "Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred"

Hi,

I have P2Vd a Dell laptop, running Windows 7 and am running it on my Windows 8.1 host. The conversion seemed to work without any issues. I can log into Windows, launch Outlook, Lync etc, however, within about 5 minutes of using it, I get the error below (in the VM). The VM crashes and I have to restart Player and the VM.

VMPlayerIssues.PNG

If I do nothing more than log in, the VM seems to stay up. The longest, so far is ~16 hours.

I have created a new VM in player and attached the VMDK, in an attempt to remove any issues / corruptions in the .vmx file. It seems to have improved the situation by allowing me to use the VM for longer, but still ~ 5 minutes makes it pretty useless.

There are several posts on the same general "Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred" error, including KB 1008485 (which I followed), but the errors in my vmware.logs are different. The most noteworthy lines of the attached vmware.log seems to be:

2455 vcpu-0| I120: FILE: FileDeletionRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (C:\Users\aperson\Documents\Virtual Machines\vmhostname.intl.domain.co.uk\vmhostname.intl.domain.co.uk.vmdk~): The system cannot find the file specified (2)

2456 vcpu-1| I120: CDROM: Emulate GET CONFIGURATION RT 2 starting feature 0

2490 vcpu-0| I120: TOOLS call to ghi.guest.getExecInfoHash failed.

2491 vcpu-0| I120: VMXVmdbGetExecInfoHashCB: failed: ret = VMDB failure

2492 vcpu-0| I120: TOOLS call to unity.get.binary.info failed.

2493 vcpu-0| I120: VMXVmdbGuestBinaryInfoCB: failed: ret = VMDB failure

2494 vcpu-0| I120: VMXVmdbGuestBinaryInfoCB: failed: ret = VMDB failure

2495 vthread-15| W110: ----Win32 exception detected, exceptionCode 0xc0000005 (access violation)----

2498 vthread-15| W110: rwFlags 0 badAddr 0xc4

And it would be correct. The file doesn't exist. It does exist without the ~ (tilde) on the end of the path name. It's contents looks like:

Googling for the other errors hasn't yielded any tangible results, so I guess they are insignificant.

I did find a post about removing host.maxkHzEstimate.cpuidHash and host.maxkHzEstimate.value from the host. I have tried this. I can't find the post. Doesn't help than VMware seem to have downed this site!

The attached log file has been rotated before starting the VM, logging in, launching Outlook, attempting to write an email and sure enough within 7 minutes, it crashed, so it doesn't have much else other than the error.

VMPlayer Version: 6.0.4 build-2249910

If anyone has any ideas as to what is going on and might be able to assist in providing some way to a solution, I'd be most grateful.

Run an old USB printer on new host?

$

More newbie questions.

I'm moving an image of my old XP system to my new Win 8.1 workstation.

I have an old printer on the XP box connected via USB, and just discovered that there's no driver for it for Win 8.1.

So if I move the USB connection to the new box, when I run the image of the old XP box will it be able to run the old printer, even though the host doesn't have the specific printer driver?  Of course the host has the basic USB drivers and can see the printer.

Thanks,

Josh

vmware player on surface pro 3 extended display windows 8 4K resolution error

$

Hi,

When I drag my wmware player to the second screen on my surface pro 3 and maximise the player window, the player window does not recognise that its on a lower resolution monitor (even when I change the settings of the vm to match the lower screen resolution of 1920x1080) - causing the mouse clicks not to be recognised. I can only use the wmware player on the main display at the higher resolution of 2160x1440.

I have exaggerated the size of the cursor in the screenshot to highlight the issue I am getting.

If anyone else has seen this issue or if it is a known issue that wmware are working on please let me know.

Thank you.

I am trying to install VMPlayer 3.1.6. I am stuck with this old version because my machine does not have a 64-bit architecture. It installed, but on first run, it tries to compile modules and fails. Here is the log:

Locate Tools VMWare-SYSTEM subdirectory on specified path in Win guest

I'm using the latest Player, 6.0.3. I've found two issues with the Tools VMWare-SYSTEM directory, with a Windows XP VM.

1. It always seem to be created on C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, ignoring environment variables TMP and TEMP. I've tried uninstalling Tools, deleting C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\VMWare-SYSTEM (which is empty), ensuring the TMP and TEMP point where I want them to, but VMWare-SYSTEM goes back to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ when I reinstall Windows. Is it possible to force this directory to be in a location I choose? I'd describe this as a bug, but unimportant, unless there is a way to determine this..

2. A comment, not a question. This may be an artefact of the extremely cut-down and restricted version of WinXP I am using; it is not a serious problem once the workaround is known. I had a VMWare-SYSTEM with some old subdirectories and files in it from previous versions (the VM has been going since player 3, I think). I wasn't able to delete these items, and I wasn't able to change their permissions (as administrator); possibly due to the restrictions I had imposed on Windows. I booted in Safe Mode; I was still unable at first to delete the old stuff, but was able to change the permissions and then delete.

Another newbie question: (how) can I move files in/out of VM?

$

So I have my old XP workstation image running on my new Win8 workstation.

Let's say I have a file on the new workstation, and want to copy it into my VM world.

I could email it from one to the other, but is there a more direct way?

Can I "share" a directory between host and VM without using Windows networking?

Or should I turn on workgroup networking and do it that way?

(I see that after installing Player my Win8 Task Manager shows two additional Ethernets, wassup with that anyway?)

Thanks,

Josh

WMWare tools install error: "Could not find component on update server"

Hopefully just about my last newbie question, either I won't need to ask more, or they'll get more difficult!

Thanks in advance.

--

I start my XP guest on my Win8 host.

After I log in, this appears on the VMWare window under my screen image:

VMWareInstallTools.png

When I click on "Install Tools" I get this error:

VMToolsNotFound2.png

I'm running a newly downloaded player, V 6.04 build 2237854.

Any idea what the problem is - and how to resolve it?

Do I really want or need these tools?

Thanks,

Josh

How to join the AD Domain that is the guest OS

$

I have VMWare Player running Windows Server 2012 R2. I need to connect my host OS--a Windows 8.1 machine--to the domain provided by this VM. Is this possible?

I bridged the AD VM. If I run ipconfig, they both say they have different IPs and MACs, but I cannot ping the host OS's IP, even from other machines on the network. I can ping the guest from other machines. When I scan the network, I see this computer under the guest's IP, the host's MAC, and no IP for the host.

I didn't think this is how bridged networking was supposed to work. Shouldn't they have different IPs/MACs?

This is purely a simulated authentication method for some software we are developing. Until recently, I was running both the AD server in a VM and the development environment in another VMs on my Macbook Pro. While this worked, my MBP just doesn't have enough power. So, now I'm trying this set up. So far with no luck.

Does anyone have an ideas?

thanks

Im trying to connect a embedded board to vmware player  windows vista guest via USB. My host windows 8.1 is not compatible with driver that connects board via USB. I don't think the win vista vm is detecting board. I went into device mgr under USB controllers and did not see it. When I connect board I get a message from host saying that windows does not recognize device. The purpose of creating vm is to connect to board. VMware will allow me to connect to board via USB wont it?

I've got VMware player 5.0.0 build-812388 up and running on a windows 8 HP Pavilion G6 machine and ubuntu-12.04 64bit guest. When I've to connect to internet by connecting to intranet and then use provided bypass proxy. But my VMware guest(i.e. Ubuntu) isn't being connected to internet. It's just showing Ethernet connected sign but no connection could ne made on any option. Also in network and sharing center in my Windows 8 host, vmnet1 and vmnet8,both are under the networks "not connected to internet". I tried to enable sharing in Ethernet connection to private network but to no good. What is missing.

PS: I've already installed vmware tools for ubuntu. My network configuration for ethernet in windows is in under-given screen shot.

Hi experts

I got a suse 11 server that seems to have vmware player installed. But when I do the command to show the number of vm's running it shows 0.

I am assuming this is because you can't set a VM to auto poweron with VMWare player so when the server crashed the VM never came back on.

I would like to see the number of registered VMs on this vmware player. And go start them. Because I didn't configure the server myself so I have no clue who put the VM where.

How can I do that?

I am not sure what other information you might need, since this is the first time I have seen VMWare Player on Linux. If it were windows it would be easy. Feel free to ask me questions.

thanks

usb keyboards not working anyomore (on host) after update to player 6.0.4

Yesterday I upgraded Player from 603 to 604, and this morning I found out that no usb keyboards would work any more on my laptop. OS is win 8.1 64bit. Laptop is a recent Dell XPS15.

I tried with both an Apple and a MS keyboard. The keyboards do work when attached to other computers.

The keyboards would show up with an exclamation mark in the device manager, with an error code 38.

After various reboots, antivirus scans and some googling, I resorted to removing the vmkbd2 driver from the UpperFilters attached to the keyboard class.

This seems to fix the problem on the laptop - although I have not tested yet if the keyboards do still work inside VMs.

Can I play a VM that was created on VMware Player in Windows and Play it on Mac using VMware Fusion? If yes how?

Hi all,

In the office we have Windows desktops, thanks for VMware player I can create a VM and basically save it on my USB drive and I can then hop to any desktop we have in the office (hot seating) and still continue on what I am doing.  My problem started when I want to run the VM at home and run it on my MacBook Pro laptop.  The laptop can only runs VMware fusion, and it's not seeing the vm file that I can play... Is there a way for me to play that VM on Mac by using some tool in VMware fusion?  Sorry if this has been answered already but I tried to google for answers but can't seem to get any hits.

Thanks,

VM Virtual machine not working after upgrade.

I just upgraded because the vm said I had to upgrade to new software and now my entire virtual computer is not starting.  It was requesting the original XP windows CD rom.  I finally found it and now Microsoft is asking for the key, which I can't find.  I have a 30 day period to straighten this all out.

Back to VMware....I need help in getting my old programs and files running.

HELP!
