Cant get vmware player to start VM headless/nogui

$

So, I have a test box running CentOS 6.x and VMwareplayer.  I was able to set up a test VM (Windows Server 2012) in order to emulate a production box, I did this through the gui. I'd like to be able to start/stop/whatever this VM via the command line without the gui, however I'm not having any luck.

When I type:

vmrun -T player start "MyVM.vmx" nogui

I get:

Error:  The operation was canceled

Anybody know what could be causing this, or where I can get a more meaningful error message as this doesn't really tell me anything?

Blue screen of death after restart

I wanted to upgrade my Wmare player to 4.0.3 (from 4.0.2), so I started the process. It successfully uninstalled itself and asked me to restart to continue the upgrade. Here comes the blue screen. Windows works in Safe mode, but I get bsod if I try Safe mode with networking. Something like "Driver irql not less or equal" and later it says something about ndis.sys. I tried to google my problem, but I didn't find any actual fix. I tried to reinstall my LAN driver, didn't work. Tried to remove Vmware Player, I get error, if I try to repair it says that I should repair it with the installer, I downloaded the installer there is no repair in it and if I try to install I get the attached error. Any idea how to fix it ?

(I got Windows 7 with SP1 on a laptop)

Black Borders Around Ubuntu Virtual Machine on Startup

Hi,

After looking for an answer for this issue both in google and here, only this question appeared to be the same: https://communities.vmware.com/message/1997844?z=598k13

I have a Windows NT virtual machine running on Windows XP in VMware Player. The for the Windows XP machine has been set to 1024x768. The maximum resolution of the virtual machine has been specified for 1024x768. Whenever I open the Windows NT virtual machine, it's in full-screen mode, at a lower resolution (669 x 521) unscaled, and has the empty space filled black.

If I change to window-mode and back to full-screen mode, the resoultion changes to 1024x768 and it takes up the entire screen. This is what I need it be from the initial startup. I've been searching for a solution, but have not been able to find one that works. If anyone has any insight on resolving this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

But there is no answer.

My case is just the same issue but:

Host: Windows XP SP3

Guest: Ubuntu 12.04

VMware Tools: installed

Anyone knows or can point me the answer or the discussion thread about this?

Update:

By mistake I logged in the VM as guest and the resolution was correct, there wasn't black borders.

Imported machine not shown in list VMWare Player 6.0.1

Hi there. Hope someone can help me. I had to format my HD. After I installed VMware Player 6.0.1, I imported a backup of a virtual machine that ran on the same computer before it was formatted. The problem is that after the import, the machine is not visible in the list in VMware Player. When I try to close the application, there is a message, “Virtual Machine is busy”. This never stops and I cannot close VMW Player. This method worked successfully on initial install.

The machine is in the Virtual Machines directory with all other files, just not visible/loaded in VMW Player. Same happenend with new VMW Player 6.0.4

Any advice as to what may cause the problems

VMware Player Mouse snaps to top left corner when clicking, typing, and highlighting using mouse.

Hello anyone,

I am currently running a Windows 8.1 host with VMware Player installed. For academic and self education purposes I am running two different guest operating systems (Server 2008 and Kali Linux) but not at the same time (if that matters). Quite simply I cannot seem to shake this mouse issue where it flies to the top left of the screen when I hold down the left mouse button (ie for highlighting, moving multiple objects on desktop) or type. When moving the mouse within the guest OS the pointer seems to flicker between the guest mouse and vmwares hand pointer. I tried unplugging my mouse and just using my laptop track pad but that doesn't fix the issue either. Also I have tried reinstalling the VM without the mouse plugged in but still experience the same issues. I am using a SeelSeries Sensei mouse and yes I have the steel series engine installed. I tried uninstalling the steelseries engine but that didn't fix it, updating the intellipoint software didn't work, and updating VMware tools hasn't worked, reinstalling vmware player after this hasn't worked either. I have been looking online for hours and looked at other solutions but they don't apply to me either (I think, the instructions didn't apply to my setup). It seems like mouse pointer issues are a common problem in vmware so if anyone knows of even a potential fix I would try it. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Binary translation is incompatible with long mode

I have Vaio Fit laptop.

OS: Windows 8 64--bit

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3337U CPU @ 1.80GHz

Virtualization is enabled in BIOS. Task manager is reporting that virtualization is enabled.

I am trying to play an image of Ubuntu 32-bit that was copied from another machine. I get the error message "Binary translation is incompatible with long mode". I did a ton of Googling and most people are having this problem when booting 64-bit guest OS with virtualization is disabled in the BIOS. That doesn't apply to me. I have virtualization enabled in BIOS and I am booting a 32-bit guest OS.

Ubuntu guest OS is running fine but slow.

I can not find anyone else having this problem. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks.

How to Fix - software update can't connect

$

Hello,

I downloaded VMware Player 5.0.2 for Windows x64 and installed it on Windows 7.

The automatic software update download appears to hang.

Clicking "Details" indicates it cannot connect to the update server "https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds " which is a non-standard URL.

I used a browser to go to https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds but all of the links lead to dead-ends.

However if you use the standard URL https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/ (with a "terminating" slash delimeter) the same directory listing appears, with working links.

There is at least one thread explaining how to manually extract and use the .iso files to install the virtual machine tools. It would be better if VMware Player handled this for the end user as designed.

The problem is in libcds.dll and can be corrected with a Hex Editor in Windows.

Example:

Download a Hex Editor like xvi32 (Google: http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm#download ) extract and run.

Find the libcds.dll file ( "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\libcds.dll" ) and make a backup copy in case this fails. Drag and drop the original libcds.dll file on the xvi32 application window.

Xvi32 has a text search feature called "Search" (After clicking on search, click on "Find - Text string") then type [ softwareupdate ] click on [OK]

To the right of the main display, in the white grid, will be the ASCII representation of the URL https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds

Click on the box, in the white ASCII grid area, after the last letter in the URL 'http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds' and type ' / ' ( forward slash - next to your right shift key, under ? ). Save the file.

Then restart the VMware Player.

Manually trigger a software update download ->

[Player] -> File -> Player Preferences -> Software Updates -> [Download All Components Now]

All of the virtual machine tools will begin to download and finish.

The downloaded packages will automatically extract and install the *.iso files where they belong.

The virtual machine tools menu option will now work from VMware Player for all virtual machines->

[Player] -> Manage -> VMware Tools Installation

If problems arise, you can stop VMware Player, and restore the libcds.dll file saved before the edit.

How safe are Shared Folders?

$

Hi,

I have to use XP for an old CNC machine I have in my garage. I have XP (all updates and roll-up) installed in Player in win8.1 and all works well, but I need to pass files back and forth to the CNC machine which could-be on the main network. Both the Host and the Guest need Internet access, so I am left with a no-longer-secure XP and the Internet. I have the CNC XP Internet isolated on it's own ADSL modem/router and switch the ADSL line in and out as required so no cross-connections at the moment.

The CNC company has been out of business since about 2004 but this 1996 CNC machine still works fine. I am currently moving files to/from the CNC and XP via a USB thumb drive (sneaker-net), but I sometimes get the direction screwed up and overwrite a newer file. I'm old, I forget stuff. Not a big deal as both current files still exist either on XP or the CNC machine daily backups. But using a Shared Folder would overcome this problem.

I am not worried about the CNC machine as it is using proprietary software with it's own Internet access. But, if I use a Shared Folder and hook the CNC to the main network and Internet, how safe is the Host, if XP got infected with something nasty? The chances are pretty remote, but nothing in software is 100% certain these days.

Thanks

Using a custom GTK icon theme crashes vmplayer

$

Hi there,

I've been struggling with this all the weekend until I found the cause (I haven't been able to solve it though).

The thing is: if you have a custom icon theme (I was using the nice FlatWoken theme) then vmplayer will segfault with no evidence pointing to the icons!

I tried strace -ttT vmplayer and I got a misguided intel that looked like it had to do with libasound or other ALSA problems. Nothing related to the real problem!

After lots of testing, reinstalling libraries and headbanging I decided to switch back to the Humanity icon set and voila! vmplayer was running again.

I still would like to use my custom icons theme, though, so does anybody have an idea on how to solve this?

Thanks!

Bridged connection from windows host internet connection not working

$

I'm using Win7 x64 as a host and Win XP and Ubuntu VMs. I have been using VMWare Player without any issues until a few days ago, when I suddenly started having problems where I couldn't connect to the internet. Sometimes the guest can connect but not the host. Sometimes the host can connect but not the guest. Sometimes they can both connect.

I don't recall anything being changed on the host OS, guest OSes, or the router that would have resulted in this. I have tried changing the router settings, changing the networking settings in windows and vmware and the guests, and have even reinstalled Windows, all to no avail. I also tried VirtualBox, but the guest OS couldn't connect using that either.

When I can't connect to the internet (from either host or guest) I can still successfully ping 8.8.8.8.

When I log into the router and view connections, it will only ever show one connection, with the MAC address of the physical (wireless) network adapter of my PC. Sometimes the IP address shown will be the host OS, sometimes it will show the IP of the guest OS.

Any ideas on how I can get this fixed?

Dave

VMware Player bridged network interface eth10 has same ip address as host

$

For work I'm trying to connect a VM launched in VMware Player 5.0.2 to my host computer via bridged network connection. The trouble that I'm having is that with DHCP the IP address that gets assigned to my guest OS (Ubuntu Linux) is identical to the IPv4 address of my host PC (running Windows 8). I'm particularly trying to bridge to my wireless network (although I've tested wired network and I still have the same problem).

Here are some additional details of my setup and what I've tried (*unfortunately my account is too new that I'm not able to upload pictures, so I'll try my best to explain):

  • Windows Firewall is turned off, as well as my AntiVirus (I use StopZilla and from what I've found, there is no firewall to disengage)
  • In the Virtual Machine Settings > Network Adapter, I selected Bridged network connection. Selected my wireless NIC in Configure Adapters. I've also tried doing this with the Virtual Network Editor tool that is so seemingly hard to find access to. No difference.
  • In Virtual Machine Settings > Network Adapter > Advanced..., I updated the MAC Address to that of my host PC
  • This is a snippet of my eth10 settings.
DEVICE="eth10" NM_CONTROLLED="yes" ONBOOT="yes" BOOTPROTO="dhcp" HWADDR="78:45:C4:C0:52:42"
  • Under ifconfig, the inet addr, HWaddr, and Mask addresses are identical to the IPv4, Subnet Mask, and Physical Address of my host PC. See below:

     ifconfig.jpg

  • I also notice something odd in my udev rules list (command: vi /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules). Here it looks as if the rules set updates with every new attempt I make at resetting my configuration. Or in other words, a new rule is created every time I change my Bridge Adapter (you can tell by the different MAC addresses in each rule, which is the result of me jumping from a wireless to a wired connection). Instead of deleting each new rule, I've just been commenting out the older rules as I go. See below:

rules.jpg

Here are some notes that I've been keeping about different things I've tried:

  • Generated new MAC Address and changed MAC address (in VM Network Adapter settings, in ifcgf-eth10 settings, and in persistent rules); no change
  • Selected Replicate physical network connection state in VM Network Adapter settings; no change
  • Gained access to Virtual Network Editor. Instead of Auto-Bridging, selected Wireless NIC as preferred adapter; no change
  • Tried to use command ifconfig eth10 10.0.0.25 netmask 255.255.255.0 to force IP change. Ran ifconfig immediately and saw change, but after reboot/restart it went back to 10.0.0.6; no change
  • Disabled entire firewall on router; no change

The end result is that from the guest OS I am able to ping myself, the gateway, the internet (i.e. www.google.com), etc. But that's kind of a given since it's assigned a valid IP address. The problem is that unless I run the command ifdown eth10 to power down that interface, my host PC isn't able to connect to the internet (Skype, Outlook and my browsers on my host PC all go offline).

Unless I'm not searching with the right technical terms, this problem seems to be undocumented that I've looked. I've got to be missing something because I've never had such a hard time trying to connect my VM to my PC.

Let me know if there's any other information I could provide that might aid in your suggestions. Thanks, all.

VM Player with Legal OS Mac

$

Hello

I suffer from inexperience with cross platform capabilities.

In the past I had Windows 7 with VMPlayer running Windows XP. Then Microsoft ceased all support of XP. The company removed XP from all VM Players.

I want to know and links to support would be helpful - with Windows 7 can I install Mac OS the current version into VM Player? and if so is this legal?

I have read comments from years ago indicating that the Mac OS EULA prohibits installation of the OS except on machines with Mac hardware.

My impression those Mac restrictions may have changed - that the newest version of Mac OS - one can install Mac on a PC running Windows 7.

My objective is to use  Windows 7 for Navision, Microsoft Office, and Abode Master Collections - and if possible to run let's say Yosemite in a VM Player.
That would open possibilities having two worlds easily within access.

Thanks for any help

Hi,

Was wondering if it is possible to disable the screen auto size function in Ubuntu? I really need this function to be off.

In my Windows vm's I have disabled vmtoolsd in the service and startup, everything still works fine while that is disabled and auto size is turned off as a result. So was wondering if I can disable vmtools in Ubuntu? I tried but couldn't get it to work.

Help appreciated
