No drives detected when booting physical disk

$

I am trying to boot a physical install of Linux in VMWare Player 7. In the virtual machine settings, I have chosen the entire disk using emulated IDE. This disk is not used by the Windows host and is set as Offline for good measure. When I start up the VM it displays GRUB exactly as it should but when it tries to load Linux it fails due to not finding the root partition UUID. Running blkid from the emergency shell reveals no drives at all. In addition, there are no HDD shown in /dev

FWIW, this same exact setup boots perfectly in Virtualbox.

VMware Player v7.0.0 full screen issue in Linux

$

Since upgrading from the latest version of VMware Player 6 on CentOS to v7.0.0, the command line parameter -X and --fullscreen no longer work (it works on Windows). I've also set the VM setting 'Enter full screen mode after powering on' and this still has no effect starting the VM from the command line.

Any help would be appreciated but I'm starting to think that this is a bug?

Thanks,

Jamie

Installed Vmware Player, now laptop won't connect to WIFI after sleep, must reset wireless adapter.

I installed Vmware Player (latest).  My Dell inspiron 7000 won't reconnect to Wifi after sleeping.  It worked fine before installing Vmware player.  I have to run the Windows 8.1 network adapter troubleshooter which resets the adapter, after which everything works fine until I put the laptop to sleep again.  I am not running Intel rapid start.  The Wifi adapter is an intel wireless N 7260.

I have not uninstalled vmware player yet,  I need it for blackberry simulator development but I may have to.

Unable to shrink or otherwise compact the virtual disk

$

Hello.

I have the following situation. I wanted to backup my VM (vmdk + adjacent files) by zipping it in the host OS, but it was too big. So I wanted to exclude some huge data that I had downloaded (~8GB) by temporarily moving it somewhere outside the guest.

The problem is that the vmdk doesn't shrink. After removing 8GB of data the guest filesystem amounts to ~4GB of data however the size of the vmdk is still 16GB (the same as it was at its highest). I repeatedly tried the "compact" and "defragment" VM tools (in the host OS) but size didn't change. Then I found out about vmware-tools utility in the guest OS (ubuntu), but "shrink" function is not available since I use ext4. I don't understand the essences of "journaling file systems" but it seems that there exists this limitation.

Then I took a different approach. Since there was no way to reclaim the unused virtual disk space, I tried to wipe it using "sfill" utility from the secure-delete ubuntu package. I was expecting - since the actual filesystem data i have is 4GB - that wiping the free space would work towards a smaller resulting zip file - since there is a lot of redundancy with the free space zeroed. No luck: same ~10GB resulting zip file.

Yet another thing surprised me during the wiping process. Wiping works by writing a huge file with zeroes in it. Since my vmdk is not pre-allocated I was aware that I needed to stop the wiping at some point, in order not to expand the vmdk unnecessarily. I carefully monitored guest used filesystem space and vmdk size, but surprise: at some point the zero-file got to 16GB; add the 4GB of ubuntu files and the vmdk should have been over 20GB, but it was only ~15GB. It's as though the zeroes were nowhere written... judging also by the similarly-sized zipped vmdk.

Could someone shed light into this confusion, and maybe some advice?

a) is there a "natural" way to shrink vmdk's that host an ext4 filesystem? so that the vmdk file is smallest possible

b) does VMware Player use some kind of compression for the data in the vmdk? or otherwise how to explain vmdk file size sometimes being smaller than guest filesystem usage

Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post - you may just read the questions at the end

Shrinking / compacting a virtual disk

What is the difference between compacting (from the Player's VM Settings menu) and shrinking (from the VMware Tools menu) a virtual disk?

I use Player 3.1 with a Windows XP Mode VM under Wiondows 7 64-bit. In this case, neither shrinking nor compacting appears to work:

  • On the Shrink tab of VMware Tools there is only a message that shrinking has been deactivated for this machine.

  • When I try to compact the machine from the Player's Hardware -> Utilities tab the compacting process starts but then aborts after a few seconds, showing the error message "One of the parameters supplied is invalid" (I am not aware of any parameters that can be supplied here ...).

Any suggestions?

Installing VMware Tools In VMware Player

Hi,

I installed VMware Player v7, created a VM (Windows) and wanted to install the VMware Tools throughPlayer > Manage > Install VMware Tools...but nothing happens when I click on this option. The following 2 other methods I found in a KB don't work either:

  • Enter D:\setup.exe where D: is the first CD-ROM drive configured for your virtual machine =>NOKas the virtual drive doesn't show the VMware Tools.
  • Searching for the ISO file in the installation folder => NOK: there is no ISO file.

After searching on the forum, I realized that VMware Player doesn't come with the VMware Tools and the workaround I used was to install VMware Workstation without license on another computer, find the "windows.iso" file, copy it onto the computer, mount it as a virtual drive and launch the setup from the guest.

The thing I don't get is why the option is available in the menu of VMware Player if the VMware Tools aren't?! It's very confusing for people new to VMware and only installing VMware Player...

How To Create Nested Virtualization Using Hyper-V In The Guest?

$

Hi,

I try to do nested virtualization with VMware Player v7 and Windows Server 2012 R2 as the guest but fail to install the Hyper-V role.

According to thisVMware document, it's possible to run a VM within a VM with Player 7: "Virtualized HV is fully supported for virtual hardware version 9 or later VMs on hosts that support Intel VT-x and EPT or AMD-V and RVI. To enable virtualized HV, select VM->Settings and navigate to the processor settings screen. Check the box next to  "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI."“

First, I tried on 2 different computers (1 server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and 1 laptop running Windows 7 Pro) whose CPU support "Intel® VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT)" according to Intel's official website:

Second, in the VM CPU settings, I tried the following options:

hyper-v03.JPG

hyper-v04.JPG

In each case, when I try to add the Hyper-V role in the guest, it fails with the message "Hyper-V cannot be installed: A hypervisor is already running":

hyper-v02.JPG

I also tried using VMware Workstation 11 instead of Player 7 but it's the same.

Can someone tell me what's wrong? How can I do nested virtualization using Hyper-V in the guest?

Thanks in advance.

Cannot Get VMware to Install on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Yes, I know this question has already been answered. No, none of the other tricks has worked, and I will go in each detail.

Side Note: I do have Virtualbox running BUT apperaently it cannot handle any Linux Based OS besides Kali. I am trying to get CentOS, Linux Mint, DSL(D@mn Small Linux), and Ubuntu in a VM

Operating System/Hardware Stats:

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit OS

Intel Xeon CPU Quad Core W5590 @3.33GHz/Core

RAM: 5.00 GB

Computer Name: Virtual-PC

Account Name: Virtual

Access Type: Administrator

Installation File Name: Vm,ware-player-4.0.6-1035888

Same error when I right-click and choose "Run as Administrator"

Error: The MSI C:\Users\Virtual\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware_1420330020\vmwarevmcisockets64.msi failed

I created the folder "vmware_1420328319", "vmware_1420330020", and "vmware_14203330410" in the C:\Users\Virtual\AppData\Local\Temp\ path, but every time I return the application, it change the folder that I just created.

-----------------------------------

Steps I have done:

  1. windows 7 - Installling VMware Player 4.0.3 fails - Super User
    • Create folder C:\Temp if it doesn't already exist. Delete everything in there and put the self-extracting executable in it. In my case the file is called VMware-player-4.0.2-591240.exe. Open up your command prompt (Start->Run->cmd.exe) and then navigate to the folder where the .exe file is located by typing cd C:\Temp. Then type this C:\Temp>VMware-player-4.0.2-591240.exe /e. Download InstEdit (trust me you will need it because some shmuck at VMware didn't test their installation packages throughly). Start the installation by running C:\Temp\VMware-player-4.0.2-591240.exe. This creates a folder inside C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware_%random_number%. (In my case this is where installation stopped prematurely) copy this folder \vmware_%random_number% into C:\Temp\ folder. If you are getting "Error 2732. Directory Manager not initialized" message when you try to start the player then follow instructions here. Instructions are a little hard to follow but you will get through it eventually. Running msiexec with /qn option [/q Sets User Interface level /n Sets it to None] was what did it for me so don't mess with these options. Player will "quietly" install and you won't even know it's there until you check your Start menu.
      • Result: C:\Users\Virtual>C:\Temp\VMware-player-4.0.6-1035888.exe /e <=== Bad Argument for extract
  2. Bug Report - Win7 - Vmware Player - vmwarevmcisocket64.msi Failed
    • Work Around:
      • 1) Create the folder that the above log file wants to write out to, and the install will work properly.
      • e.g. mkdir C:\Users\dan\AppData\Local\Temp\
      • 2) Re-run the installer.
        • Result: Same error as above about the vmwarevmcisockets64.msi failed

If anyone else has any ideas that I can try. Please let me know. I have read one article about someone successfully extracting the .msi package and was able to install that way, but I cannot find out how to do that. Also I seriously doubt any of the VMWare employees read this, but if they do, your getting lazy on making sure your products stay working.  At least virtualbox was a nice simple install, compare o this so called program. I love the interface of VMWare and how to works, but I can't stand the installation, specially when it has become this much of a pain.

Install problem on XP 32bit

$

I have an earlier version of VM Player installed and running (2.5.3 build-185404) on XP Home Edition which was installed with an automotive database two years ago.

A recent application wants to install a later version of VMware Player but results in an error during installation:

Invalid configuration file. File "C:\Mercedes\Mercedes Virtual PC\Mercedes Virtual PC.vmx" was created by a VMware product with more features than this version of VMware Player and cannot be used with this version of VMware Player.

Cannot open configuration file C:\Mercedes\Mercedes Virtual PC\Mercedes Virtual PC.vmx.

I tried installing the following versions but always results with the same error.

VMware-player-5.0.0-812388

VMware-player-5.0.4-194579

VMware-player-6.0.4-224991

Error: VMware Player can not be installed on this computer.  VMware Player requires features that are not present on your CPU.  See the product release notes for specific hardware and software requirements.

But when I go to the release notes it states that I need to have 64-bit x86 CPU.

This is contradictory to the download title for VMware Player 5.0

VMware Player for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit

(VMware Player for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit | 73M)

Earlier versions do not seem to be available.

So how do I load a 5.0 version on 32 bit? doesn't seem possible according to the release notes.

Also it would be greatly helpful if the Error message included what feature(s) it was looking for that were not present on my CPU.

Why can't I download earlier versions prior to 5.0?

Thx.

end doc.

How do I make /tmp/VMwareDnD a separate disk

Mounted a separate nonpersistent disk at /tmp/VMwareDnD but it is not working, I cannot copy files from windows host to linux guest, only the other way round. What's the proper way to do in /etc/fstab?

Here's the relevant line in /etc/fstab that does not work:

/dev/sdd1 ext3 errors=remount-ro 0       0

What is the proper way to do it in /etc/fstab?

If it helps, I also tried

sudo chmod 777 /tmp/VMwareDnD

Now the permissions shown by ls -l are like this:

drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 4096 5 Jan   1  2014 VMwareDnD

But still I cannot copy from host to guest. What else could be wrong?

VMware Player Lost Network Connection. How to reestablish?

$

Not sure when it happened as I don't use VMware player too often.

  • My main desktop is Win 7 Pro.
  • VMware Player: 6.0.2 build - 1744117
  • In the player, is XP Pro.
  • The network is a "workgroup".

In XP Pro inside the player, when I opened up Windows Explorer, Network, I briefly saw my desktop drives (in the Win 7 system), then they disappeared and now nothing is shown via the network.

Here are some images of the Network settings on the Win 7 system. Appreciate any help you can give on reestablishing the connection.

hello, good morning.

When you booting up an Ubuntu Desktop from an USB (external disk with full working instalation, not liveUSB) and you install VMware Player on it, if you try to open an Ubuntu desktop guest .... all crash. If you try to open a Windows guest, nothing goes wrong. It's ok ? or a bug ?

I tried itwith version 6and 7 of vmware player for linux 64bits.

greetings and good new year.

Virtual Ethernet Adapter no network access after upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1?

$

Hi,

I had been running vmplayer 6 on a Windows 8 pc (with hyper-v disabled) no problem. After the recent upgrade to Windows 8.1 (on the host), the client OS (XP) lost all network connectivity and listed the network connection as unplugged. The network adapter config (advanced) does not display any adapters. When I checked the host adapters, the VMWare Virtual Ethernet adapter is listed as "Unidentified Network" with "No Network Access". I'm not sure how to remove or re-add the vmware virtual adapter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Load Ubuntu Server inside VMPlayer on Win 7 Errors

The host is a

OS :Win 7 SP1 64-bit

Proc : Intel Core i7 2.6ghz

Ram : 24G

I am trying to load Ubuntu-14.04-server-amd64.iso insided a VM created that has been assigned 15g of disk space and 4g of Ram.

When I point towards the ISO, I receive 2 popups

The first

Binary translation is incompatible with long mode on this platform. Long

mode will be disabled in this virtual environment and applications

requiring long mode will not function properly as a result. See http://vmware.com/info?id=152 for more details.

The second which actually shows as an error with the typical white x in a red circle

This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible.

This host supports Intel VT-x, but Intel VT-x is disabled.

Intel VT-x might be disabled if it has been disabled in the

BIOS/firmware settings or the host has not been power-cycled since

changing this setting.

(1) Verify that the BIOS/firmware settings enable Intel VT-x and disable 'trusted execution.'

(2) Power-cycle the host if either of these BIOS/firmware settings have been changed.

(3) Power-cycle the host if you have not done so since installing VMware Player.

(4) Update the host's BIOS/firmware to the latest version.

For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152.

I also ran the VMPlayer compatibility test which returned

This host is capable of running a 64-bit guest operation system under this VMware product.

Im wondering if anyone else experienced this issue and arrived at a fix.  ... and solrry about the first post.

Thanks Regards

I have my PC hooked up on multiple monitors and I want to run VMware player on one of extended screen other than the primary screen. Hello community,

How are you all? I hope you are fine

I tried to install VMWare Player 7 and therefore uninstalled the older version. Now I have the issue, that the error above shows up and the logs read as follow:

I am running Windows 7 64bit Ultimate with SP 1 installed.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Note: I had to do a full repair of my OS a few weeks ago with the Windows 7 64bit Ultimate SP1 installation disk. This should not have such an effect.

By the way, when I try to install 6.0.3 I get this message:

Best regards,

T

PS: Already uninstalled my AV as well as disabled Defender. No other AV or similar tool was running. No change in behaviour. VMware Player 5.5 installs ok, but cannot update. Also VMWare Workstation has this issue and forced installation gives the uninstall error "The MSI '' failed." No suggestion works here. Removed also all entries from the registry and from the file system. It appears I either miss something, or there is a flag somewhere unrelated to "VMware" something in the system hidden.

PPS: I am full Administrator.
