Shutting down Ubuntu Server 14.10 causes entire host system to crash

I'm running an Ubuntu Server 14.10 guest on a Windows 10 host (all updates are installed on both systems). Every single time I shut down the Ubuntu guest using the command line (sudo shutdown -h 0), the guest starts the shutdown process then my entire host OS freezes--I cannot move the mouse, hear any sounds, nothing. It sits in this frozen state for a minute or so, then I get a BSoD. So far the blue screens have all been "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" errors.

 

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this problem?

Win7 and Win8 images

Hello everyone,

 

This seems like an obvious question, but I've searched for the past 30 minutes and cannot find an *obvious* answer.

 

I have just installed VMWare Player (Free version) on my Win 8.1 computer and am looking for a place where I can download images for Win 7 and Win 8.0. It seems like this should be available on VMWare's website but I cannot find anything. I have found some third-party sites that offer image downloads, but I don't know whom to trust. Can anyone give me guidance on where I can download images for VMWare Player?

Open Link inside VM on Host Browser

Hi,

 

 

my Host-System is Linux, my Guest is Windows-7.

Windows run's in Unity-Mode, because I have to work with both systems simultaneously.

For some reasons I have to work with a Windows Email-Client, and It would be very helpful, if when i click on a link in an Email (inside VM -> Windows), that then open the Host Browser for it.

 

On a Mac that works with VMware-Fusion easily. There you can set default applications for specific actions (For example: Links inside VM's open in Browser Firefox from Host, or clicked "mailto:" Links on Host open in Email Program from the VM-xy, Telnet..., FTP..., etc.)

 

In VMware-Player i can't find such Settings. Is something like this possible with Scripts?

Networking guest and host and using guest as server

Hi

 

I need some help. I am new to the world of virtualization.On a high end machine, I have windows 8 running as host and windows server 2008 r2 VM running as guest which I created using VMware player. I want to use the host as a client machine and guest as the server machine. So, I installed the HP Application life cycle  management(ALM) software on the guest OS (Server 2008 r2) . I want to access the ALM server from client using http://<<hostname>>:8082/qcbin. Could somebody please let me know how to network the two computers and allow the traffic between them?

 

The only way I could do it is by changing the virtual machine's Network settings to custom : vmnet8 and disabling the windows firewall on home/work network in the guest OS. Is this recommended?

Automatically Grab Mouse And Keyboard on Player startup

Hello,

 

I have a Win7 Host running VMPlayer 7, with WinXP Pro Guest. I'm configuring the guest to automatically start with host on fullscreen and vm toolbar hidden. But I have this annoying extra first click I have to do to get the VM to grab the input devices. Is there a preference line to get the VM to automatically grab the input devices without this extra first click?

Can't install/update Vmware tools 9.9.0

Hi everyone.

I've faced a problem with installing/updating latest Vmware tools v.9.9.0. Once I choosed to update the tools and they have been downloaded I receive an error "Corrupt file received from update server. Check your network connectivity and try again later. If the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator". And now every time I press "Download and Install" button I receive this error message and as I can see update tool doesn't try to redownload tools image.

I couldn't find where temporary image was saved so I reinstalled Vmware Player and tried to download and install tools again using different network interface. And again I received a message about corrupt image.

Do you have any suggestions how to fix this? I receive annoying messages about new Tools available every time I start VM.

Guest display split into identical panes

I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS linux running in a VMWare Player 6 VM, in a Win7 host.

 

This install has been stable for >2yrs, but after some Ubuntu updates today, my screen now boots into 3 repeated and truncated panes.  See bottom of msg for how the display shows.

I found this VMWare KB article that describes the issue, but I'm unsure this applies to Player6:

VMware KB: Linux Guest Display Splits into Multiple Panes with Identical Content

 

I had installed VMWare Tools using the Player controls, but running the prescribed command in Ubuntu terminal:

sudo vmware-config-tools.pl --overwritesvga

....doesn't do anything, just gets me to the man pages for this config package.

 

Help appreciated!  I'm unable to use this VM as is.

Player starts Win8 guest, 2 seconds black and then returns to player GUI

Hi All,

 

I used Converter to create a Windows 8.1 64bit VM from an existing laptop.

On another 64 bit laptop host I try to start this VM via Player. It gives me a 2 seconds black background and then returns to the players GUI. No error messages given.

 

This host laptop runs Windows 8.1 as host, and the player can run other  Windows 8.1 64 bit VMs without problems.

 

I tried a lot (possible solutions found via Google), but result stays the same.

 

Att: vmx and log.

 

Any ideas?

VMware reports Ethernet but Host is WIFI?

I have VMware Player version 7.0.0 in stalled on a Windows 8.1 PC. I installed Windows 10, 64 bit build 6879 with no problems, including latest VM Tools. Everything seems to work perfectly, BUT, Windows 10 shows a gigabit lan connection to the Internet while my actual connection is an Intel 7260 wireless adapter. No big deal, but when I shut down Windows 10 and close VMware Player, my wireless adapter is in some state that requires disable/enable to get it working again.

 

Any insight will be appreciated.

Convert vmcx file (Windows virtual machine)

I have installed VMWare player on windows 7-64 and I would like to convert a windows XP virtual machine to run under VMP.  There is an option to convert XP mode, but I made a copy of XP mode, called it something else, and it is its own VM.  Is there a way to convert it?

I've tried a ton of settings, i've tried ISO, mounted ISO, purely empty VMs. I can't figure it out and google isn't being helpful at all.

How to add Direct3d support for windows98 either by getting an old gfx card or by writing a driver.

Hey everyone,

 

I am well aware that D3D is not supported on Windows 98 but I need it for games. It seems like a good long term challenge.

 

Do you have any suggestions on how I can support a real old gfx card on guest win98 ?

Or is there a way to write a driver to support the current gfx.

 

Any suggestions?

 

And no, buying an old PC isn't what I'm willing to do.

Iam using VMware player to play some games that were for windows XP. I think I have found a way to increase performance. I Got rid of my virus and disabled net working so I cant get the internet. also disabled firewall since I cant use the internet. It seems to run alot smother. someone should make a virtual machine just for gamers. That would be cool.

Windows 10 & VMware Player 7: screen resolution issue

I'm running Windows 10 tech preview on a virtual machine using VMware Player 7.0.

With the latest build (9926) I can't select 2560x1440 as screen resolution, only 2560x1600,2560x1920 and everything below 1920x1200 shows up.

 

I want to add that with the previous build I had no problems with the screen resolution, this issue came up now that I downloaded the latest version of the beta.

 

Does anybody has the same problem? Can anybody help me?

I have Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 running as Guest in VMware Player 7.0.0 Build 2305329, but both are without internet.

But in the host Machine Internet is running fine. I´m not using Wiifii.

How do I configure it?

VMware Player doesn´t work with Windows 10

Hi.

My main operating system is Windows 10 TP Build 9926.

The latest version of VMware Player 7.00 is installed without any issue. And also starts without any problem Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

W7 is beeing used for 2 years, and today I installed W8.1.

But I found a problem. Non of them connect to the internet. I´m connected to the internet, but in both OS I get a red cross on the icon like it show at the picture.

On my Laptop with Windows 8.1 it works fine. Just with my Desktop running W10 TP it ´s showing this issue.

Is it a bug or what can I do to fix it?

I tried in compatiblity mode with Windows 8 and didn´t work.

Can it be fixed?
