usb connection unsuccessful - device in use
Hi,
I can't manage to connect a Feitian HID dongle to USB2 port. I get the message "the connection for the usb device Feitian HID dongle was unsuccessful device currently in use"
I'm using a Vaio S serie with 2 usb2 ports and 1 usb3. The strange thing is that it works well with usb3 but not usb2 (both). I copied the VM from another machine Vaio Z serie where the dongle works on usb2.
I tried to reboot, to deactivate the dongle on the physical machine, to uninstall it, no change. I removed usb controller from the vmplayer and added it back, no change.
The bad thing is that of course, I don't want to use the only usb3 I have for a dongle !
Thanks for any help,
Olivier

Vmplayer 5 not connecting to ESXi
Dear all, it seems Player 5 (on Ubuntu 12.10 64bit) does no more connect to ESXi. I tried from a different Ubuntu 12.10 64bit machine and can confirm that prvious version 4.0.4 connect to a VM in ESXi when called from command line with "vmplayer -h <ESXi-IP-adress>". For vmplayer 5.0.0 the parameter "-h" now means Help. It seems that for vmplayer 5.0.0 there is a new parameter "-host" (at least it does not object about it) but vmplayer does not open usual user/password promt and exits. Is it a bug or do I miss smth?
WMware player 5 for commercial use
How to use VMware player as service?
VMware player is very nice and simple.
Every morning I start virtual mashine and every evening I stop virtual mashine. Virtual mashine has very impotant content: local sites and personal files.
can i do a $40 windows 8 upgrade of xp guest w/ scsi disk type
MS is offering a $40 win 8 upgrade. This is a nice price and it is the best way for me to get win8. However, running the upgrade assistant complains that win8 does not support the vmware scsi disk type. I found a video on youtube for changing scsi to ide, but only on vmware fusion, not player.
Has anyone found a workaround for this? I don't want to buy win8 and find out I can't upgrade my vm.
I realize it's a bit early since today is the first day this rather cheap upgrade is being offered. Any ideas though?

Windows XP guest: share mapped printers ...
Dear all,
I use VMWare player to run a Windows XP guest. The printers from the host are mapped into the Windows XP guest. But in Windows XP I have a DOS program that needs to print to one mapped Windows XP printer. Therefore I have shared the mentioned Windows XP printer and use the command net use lpt2 \\WindowsXPGuest\printer to enable printing of the DOS program to lpt2. When I test this printing via dir > lpt2: in a DOS box I can see the printing job appearing shortly in the printer jobs list but nothing is printed out. Also the VMWare host printers does NOT see this job. Printing from Windows applications in Windows XP guest works.
What went wrong with configuration?
Thank you for your help in advance,
Best regards,
Andreas.
Cannot install Windows 8 evaluation (error booting from installation image)
Hello,
I have problems installing Windows 8 evaluation. When starting the virtual machine I cannot boot from the Windows 8 installation image to start the installation process. I always get this error message:
I am using a Windows 8 x64 image downloaded from there: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx. The VMware Player version is 5.0.0 build-812388.
How can I solve this problem?
Thanks for your help.
WINDOWS 7 PROBLEMS
i'm trying to load windows 98 on a vm player and i get the following error
Binary translation is incompatible with long mode on this platform. Disabling long mode. Without long mode support, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code. For more details see http://vmware.com/info?id=152.

Windows 8 crash
Hi all,
I recently upgraded my windows 7 machine to Windows 8, everything appeared fine until I tried to use my VMWare player install. I mostly use an image of BackTrack 5 R3 for work, and when trying to 'startx' after authenticating in the VM the Windows 8 host crashes and reboots. A quick Google hasn't revealed any answers, so I thoguht I'd pop along here.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Use same theme as host in Unity
Hello!
This is my first post - I hope I am okay to post here!
Here is my question. I am running Windows XP in VMWare Player on a Windows 7 system. Is it possible to, when using Unity, have the Windows XP windows use the Windows 7 theme?
Thanks,
Henry
VMware Player 5.0.0 - Switching between multiple VMs
Hi there,
I've just started using version 5 of Player, and try as I might I've been unable to figure out how to switch between multiple full-screen VMs on a single host. Previous versions have had a couple of handy arrow symbols on the filp-down menu at the top of the screen, which allowed you to skip between however many VMs you had running. This facility seems to have disappeared in the new version.
Can anyone help..?!
Thanks,
Glen
Lost in Translation to n00b- Install Instructions
Hi All,
First time caller. Short time reader. Just began my VM odyssey and my VM ship has holes.
This is my problem.. i hope there is enough detail and usable language.
Physical Machine:
CPU i5 3570K
MSI Z77A GD55 with Virtual crap in BIOS enabled
16GB RAM
120G SSD - 60G free
1T HDD - 900G free in 4 partitions. (I didn't create a partion on the SDD or HDD to specifically provide space for the vdisk.)
MSI 7870 Vid Card
2 monitors
Windows 7 Pro 64
I use the SSD for a game. I keep Win 7 Pro, the game on the SSD. Win 7 Pro knows SSD as C:/
I want to use the VM XP mode to load another game client and drive both toons via hotkey program that sends keystrokes from my single keyboard to multiple "named" machines/"named" windows. Basically dual box 2 game clients - one on host Win 7 and another on guest XP.
I installed XP mode and then VM Player 5. Imported the XP mode over. It appears to basically function. I'm doing this in the VM XP now. I have surfed web on XP VM, but tried nothing else for fear of SNAFU.
Confusion: What disk is the VM using?
The VM has a 127G vdisk set up. I don't recall ever having a chance to set this size. All I want the XP mode is to run another copy of the game -- 4G disk space and hotkey program so I can drive all game clients with 1 keyboard plus the OS. Don't need 127G! Plus when I exit, I occasionally get a pop up saying my vdisk needs defrag. ??? The physical drives are basically empty and the vdisk is hours old with no programs installed - IE and media player.
So which drive is the 127G reading and writing from. XP says its C:/ (the SSD on Win 7) but the C: is only 120G. The VM player app is saved to a partition on the HDD (W:/) but I assigned the VM working drive and other VM thing to C:/ on Win 7 Pro.
Questions:
1) Is the vdisk set up correctly and which drive is the VM using and is it safe to believe that vdisk will not write over files.
By the way, I open up Computer in Win 7 and look at the hard disk space before and after VM install and I can't see where 127G is taken up.
By the way, I open up Computer in Win & after launching VM XP mode and disk space is same as pre launch.
2) I want a unique IP address for the XP mode so I can send keystrokes to it via the hotkey program.
-- I have no idea if I domain is set up or if things need to networked etc. n00b!
Any help is much appreciated.
Possible Bugs In VMPlayer 5 + A Few Requests
Hi,
I'm now using VMPlayer 5.0.0 build-812388. It's installed under a Windows 8 Enterprise host. I'm running a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS inside my VM and having a few aesthetic issues as listed below:
- The Command Bar behavior is inconsistent. Once it's unpinned, it'll hide for a bit and then no longer works and shows all the time. I can't get it to hide again via the show/hide command bar button.
- I can't drag the Command Bar to another monitor or to any position across the top. It would be nice to be able to do this the way the Windows RDP client does.
- The Cycle multiple monitors doesn't always work correctly, i.e., I get scrollbars on my main display when they're not needed. I have to click this several times to finally get rid of the scrollbars.
- There are times when I can't get the secondary monitor to "wake up" from whatever state it's in. This typically happens if I leave for a bit and turn off the monitors then when I come back I turn monitors on and log back in from the blank host screen saver that had kicked in (no screen saver on VM OS). The physical monitor is on and active, i.e., not asleep and I can see my mouse pointer move onto the extended desktop, but I lose my extended view. I have to either go through the Cycle multiple monitors to "restore" it or use the Windows screen resolution to change it temporarily and that gets it back and viewable again.
Please let me know if you need any additional information. Thank you for any help you can offer.
VMWARE PLAYER installation failed:
When installing VMWARE PLAYER 4.0 onto my 32 bit XP desktop, I get this error:
The MSI'C:LOCALS~1\Temp\vmware_1351632206\vmwareplayer_x86.msi' failed
I tried downloading the install package again and it gave the same error message during installation.
Installation failed.
USB 3.0 ... Again ...

This is a "default" install, and the VM was created using the "USB 3.0" switch.
I have two completely different USB 3.0 drives, both report exactly the same, so not "drive specific".
Any comments / suggestions / help?
Further information available on request (i.e. a complete clean log file from start up, clean USB 2.0 usage, failed USB 3.0 usage).
