failed VMWare Tools update in Ubuntu, lost shared folders, help?

I'm not sure what's going on but after VMWare Player prompted me to update my VMWare Tools in Ubuntu, it didn't update successfully. Now if I click on Player -> Manage, I see "(Stopping VMWare Tools installation)" but it's greyed out, and I can't cancel it or redo the installation.

How can I reinstall VMWare Tools properly? There is a vmware-tools-distrib on the desktop. I have gone into it and tried "sudo ./vmware-install.pl - d", and it will finish installing with no error message. After I reboot though, I still see the greyed out "(Stopping VMWare Tools installation)" under Player -> Manage.

Update: I have restarted Vmware Player, deleted the old vmware-tools-distrib folder, restarted the Vmware Tools installation process, and everything finished as expected, but I still do not have shared folders back. They just disappeared under /mnt/hgfs. Any ideas?

Update: another page says vmware tools is supposed to have added the following in fstab, but I don't have it:

.host:/   /mnt/hgfs   vmhgfs   defaults,ttl=5   0 0

Automatic Bridging Settings in Windows 10

I'm not sure where to report this problem, but here goes. After upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview, I cannot select a host adapter to automatically bridge in VMWare Player in the settings for each VM. The normal dropdown menu is empty.  I need this particular functionality.  Already removed and reinstalled VMWare Player.  I could not find any posts related to this problem.  So hopefully someone can look into this.

VMWare Player Intel VT-x Issues

Hey guys,

I have recently became interested in mucking around with Linux VM's. I have considered dual booting but I feel like it isn't worth it to dedicate a M.2 to an OS I probably won't use a whole lot. I figured i'd use a VM. I tried to use Oracles solution and I found out I don't have Windows 8.1 Pro so no Hyper-V. A mate of mine told me about VMWare so I installed it. However, whenever I try to start a Mint Machine I get a error form saying that Intel VT-x isn't enabled even though in my BIOS it is. I have power-cycled several times and no solution.

These are the VM specs:

Ubuntu 15.04 64 Bit

30GB of Storage on an Intel 240GB SSD (it is my boot drive)

4GB of Memory

My Motherboard Specs:

Asus X99 Pro (BIOS Revision 1702) (Most Current)

Thanks guys.

VMware Player Freezes Then Runs Really Fast

I run VMware Player 7.10 on host 64-bit Windows 8.1. My guest OS is 64-bit Windows 10.

The VM is installed on a separate physical hard drive from the host OS. I have installed the most up-to-date version of VMware Tools.

Every few minutes, VMware Player freezes for about 15 seconds. When it comes back to life it runs very quickly, like a video in fast motion. This problem was previously described in Workstation Guest Freezes then goes really fast.

I followed the recommended resolution steps mentioned in that question, but unfortunately my problem is not solved. More specifically:

  • My host is configured for the correct time and time zone. It is running Windows' own clock synchronization utility.
  • The VM is set to the correct time and time zone and is using Windows 10's own clock synchronization utility.
  • I tried VMware Tools' optional clock synchronization feature by placing a check mark in "Synchronize guest time with host" but that only made things worse. Now VMware Player freezes every 15 seconds or so and stays frozen for up to a minute at a time.

I'm not sure if I have the correct settings for the amount of CPU cores and RAM: The host has a single CPU with 4 cores. I assigned 2 cores to the VM. The problem still occurs when I assign 1 core to the VM. The host has 12 GB of RAM; I assigned 4 GB to the VM.

Is there a way to prevent the guest from alternately freezing and then running at fast motion? VMware Player is pretty much useless to me now.

Application Failed To Start w3btrv7.dll was not found

Hi Guys.

I am running windows 7 pro 64 bit & needed to run a 32 bit programme that would not work using the 64 bit.  The programme is a little unusual as its run over a shared network, with a desktop shortcut to open the programme.

I have tried installing on the 64 bit & no good, so emulated windows XP home on VMware & although I can access the shared folders on the network, I get the above error message when trying to run the programme.

The programme is called jobshop & was a 1 off written for us, so dont have any real feedback on other instances of the installs, & the company who made the programme insist that you cant run it on 64 bit operating systems.

The strange thing is that when I close the error message as above it actually opens the "shell" of the programme so you can log on but nothing can be used/accessed.

I get the same error message when I tried installing it on the 64 bit OS also which has also baffled me.  I have tried uninstall/rei0nstall etc also.

Any Ideas????

Thanks

Neal.

I've recently heard that VmWare has released the 7.1.1 (7.1.1-2771112) version of VmPlayer, but every time I check for updates the VmPlayer sais that there are no new updates, so I can't update. What is wrong?

In my computer, I have the free unlicensed VmPlayer 7.1.0-2496824 installed, whitch it was downloaded from the official website.

Thanks.

Problems with "%" character in file name

Hello.

I'm getting weird problems.

Everytime I try to copy a file from VM to host with the sequence "}%" in the file name I get this error message:

"Cannot get attributes of file on virtual machine. Canceling the file copy operation."

When I use Shared Folders option and open the shared folder in VM, a file with name "{doc}%1" in host appears as "{doc}]%1" in VM.

In this case, there are other combinations: !%, @%, #%, $%, &%, (%, )%, {%, }%, ^%.

With all of them I get that error. I don't know if there are other combinations.

Do you know what is happening?

Thanks.

Win 7 BSOD driver irql not less or equal windows 7 vmware upon booting Ubuntu X64 VM

As soon as I get past the grub screen, and Ubuntu starts to boot, the host comes down with a BSOD and driver irql not less or equal error.

This started with one install of 32 bit Ubuntu and VMware player 6.  It was fine at first and than after a while it would BSOD win 7 every time I brought the VM up.  I have other Windows VM's and they are fine.  I re-installed the VM and it was fine again for a while and than started doing the BSOD thing.   I upgraded to VMware player 7 and Ubuntu 14, 64 bit.  That was happy for a while, and I thought all this was behind me and now it is doing it again, and now it has files on it that I want back.

I would really love to get the VM working again, but in the worst case, I would like to get my files off of it.

Does anybody have any ideas on this one?

VMware Player 7.1.1 - Windows XP, Unable to locate VMware tools

Hi,

I'm trying to install the VMWare tools under my VMWare session using the VMware Player appilcation. The software has installed okay, but when I try to install the VMWare Tools from the menu, I get an error saying it is unable to connect to the server. I have checked the settings under the preferences, and it is pointing to CDS Repository - /var/www/public/stage/session-44/cds. However, when I try to go to that folder there is no entry for 7.1.1. I have tried downloading the Windows tools for 7.1.0 but loading on my virtual machine does nothing (I get no pop up or messages, and clicking on the file again says it is already running).

Thanks.

I'm running windows 7 64bit sp1 host machine, vmware player 6.0.4, and guest machine windows xp sp3. I have an m-audio firewaire 410 sound device connected but the windows xp guest can't see the device. I have the firewire 410 (multichannel) listed in vmware as the sound device, I have the m-audio drivers installed in both windows 7 (host) and windows xp (guest). In the uppar right corner of the vmware guest window it shows the audio device as Multichannel (M-Audio FW 410) connected but windows xp does not see the device. It previously saw and used the via sound card I have on the machine motherboard. I can't work out why windows 7 is not sharing the firewire device. Thanks for any pointers.

Running Windows version 7.0 sp1 and Vmware player 7.1.1 build-2771112

When i try to update the player or install the tools for windows I get the error Could not find component on update server. Contact VMware Support or your system administrator.

This happens on two different PC's on two different LAN's/Inet connections. I set my Internet security to low and turned off the firewall and virus scan with no luck.

I tried running VMware as admin, gave myself full permissions etc no luck I am not using a proxy

I've used other versions of player in the past and never had this issue, It is really starting to tick me off to no end!!!!!!!  Is this a Microsoft issue ????

I am running a Ubuntu Linux image in VMWare Player on my server. The host is Windows Server 2008.

The problem is that when my host loses connectivity and then reacquires it, my bridged adapter in VMWare Player is still unable to get an IP address and Ubuntu does not have internet connectivity. This is my settings for VMWare Player  and Ubuntu.

How do I add the storage from a physical drive to a nested ESXi 5.5 in a VMWare workstation environment? I need it to appear as another datastore so I can delve it out to VM's.

TIA!
