VMware Player 5 - Tools - "Cannot find component on update server..."

$

While creating a new VM in VMware Player v5.01.1 (build-894247), for Windows 8 Professional, I encountered an error stating "Cannot find component on update server.  Contact VMware support or your system administrator".  However, the VM creation continued, and the new Win 8 VM is apparently functioning correctly.

However, if I now attempt to install VMware Tools, I get the same error.

Lose snapshots created by vmware fusion when running in vmware player?

Hi All,

At home I have VMWare Fusion on Mac and have created plenty of snapshots;

Unfortunately I will be away and stay with a friend who only has VMWare Player.

Will I lose all the snapshots I created if I run my latest VM at his computer, considering VMWare Player only have single snapshot capability?

Thanks

Hard faults w/ Player 3.1.3 and tons of RAM?

So, I'm trying to install Linux  (though it happened with a Win7 too...) in a guest OS configured to use 2  cores (I have 8 physical) and 2GB of RAM (I have 16GB physical). Every  so often the guest freezes, and my disk acitivity light goes nuts. While  this wouldn't bother me if it were during the file copy portions of the  installation it's during the GUI setup, which pretty much stops me dead  in my tracks for the minute or so it takes to start working again.

Naturally  I started sniffing around looking for what was generating this disk  activity. Sure enough, performance monitor shows between 20 and 100 hard  faults per minute from vmware-vmx.exe. Now, I've been doing this kind  of thing for a while, so let me rule out the obvious:

*They system has 16GB of RAM, all of which is recognized and usable by Windows 7 x64.

* There was, during the period where I was troubleshooting this, anywhere between 8 and 11GB of physical RAM free.

*  I keep a 1GB pagefile configured simply because some Windows software  is known to behave badly if it can't manage its pagefile usage.

* There are no other applications generating hard faults.

*  I use Microsoft Security Essentials for my anti-malware solution, this  presents me with no issues with other applications, but regardless I  tried both adding the relevant processes and file extensions to the  exclusions lists, and when that failed to help, disabled the real-time  protection alltogether. While this change made a difference in the  length of time the guest OS hesitated, it did not eliminate the problem.

So,  I suppose my primary question is... why is vmware-vmx.exe insisting on  paging things out of memory instead of leaving it to the WIndows Memory  Manager? Is there a way I can stop it? Is this a known issue and what  are common work-arounds or solutions to it?

Thanks!

Connecting "Flash Drive" to VMware Player ...

Hi all;

I am a student taking a MySQL course at a local JC, we use VMware Player from a portable HD.

At school (VMware player ver 4.x.x.x, W7 Pro) allows me to connect the FD to the VM just fine.

At home (VMware Player ver 5.0.1, W7 HP) it does not.

I can see the FD on the host, but not on the VM.

I checked Player>Removable Devices: ... nothing.

There's not even a place that would allow me to manually mount a FD.

More:  One of my fellow students is running the same version of VMware Player (5.0.1) on his laptop, and is able to see the FD ok too.

It just seems to be on my home computer.

?????????

Thanks,

Wayne

Not responding after start

VMWare Player 5.0.1 build-894247 on window s7 Pro SP1 64 bit.

Each time I start the player, its window is unresponsive for about 10 seconds.

The title bar has "(Not Responding)" appended to the window title and the window body is blank.

This happened with 5.0.0 and now with 5.0.1.

After the 10-15 seconds it works normally, but it is annoying to wait each time.

Does this happen to others too? Is there a solution?

Regards,

David

PS: Why does the forum banner say "VMware Player 4.0 is available" when 5.0.1 is out?

Windows XP vm - logs off immediately after login

I created a vm following and old thread: (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1439877)

put the disk in a USB-case and use that from your Windows system

1. create new VM

2. add physical disk and assign the USB-disk - name it "physical.vmdk"

3. with vmware-vdiskmanager.exe convert the disk into a virtual one

vmware-vdiskmanager -r "physical.vmdk" -t 0 "virtual.vmdk"

4. with virtual hardware editor : remove "physical.vmdk" and add "virtual.vmdk"

5. run Converter and use "configure machine" option - point to the new VM

6. now you can test the VM

Everything look good and boots fine in vmware player on a fedora linux. Windows login is displayed.

However after entering correct password, windows immediately logs me out again....

Can someone let me know what I need to do?? Please!

Starting with kernel update 2.6.32-279.11 and continuing until 279-14, starting up VMware Player causes a kernel panic.  The 279.9 version and previous does not seem to have this problem.  Anyone else getting panics?

VMWare Player Can't Connect to VMWare Update Server

I just installed VMWare Player 4.0.2 onto a Windows 7 Pro 32bit Workstation.  Next, I virtualized a Physical Machine running XP Media Center 32bit and copied the VM to the Windows 7 machine and opened the VM in the VMWare Player.  It started up and is running.  The only problem is that VMWare Tools could not be found for the XP Media Center guest VM, so it attempted to connect to VMWare to download the Tools.  The problem is that it fails to connect to the server to check for updates.  I have disabled the firewall, rebooted, verified that I am connected to the internet on the Windows 7 host machine, I can even get out to the internet from the XP VM guest.  I am not connecting out through a proxy and I changed the Player preferences to 'No Proxy'.  In network connections I see 3 adapters, the physical, and two virtual.  Although both virtual show as unidentified it doesn't seem to affect the XP VM from gaining internet access.  Which I'm a little confused about.  Also, does the player get its network connection from the host's physical adapter or through the virtual adapters?  I know the VMs get their network connections from the virtual adapters.  Any Ideas on how I can get the player connecting to vmware's update servers?

Hi,

I had vm player 4 installed on windows 7 and upgrade to windows 8. Everithing worked fine but now i have this error in event viewer.

I try to uninstall the player but the uninstaller says i can't run vm on a machine that as hyper-v installed.

After that i try to stop all vm services, but can't find the "vmware network application interface service".

Don't know if this is causing some crashs, but anyway would be better to clean the system.

Usb keyboard problem

Hi everyone, first post here for me!

I'm experiencing a very weird behaviour wth usb keyboards. My laptop is an Intel Ivy Bridge with 4 usb ports, all 3.0.

When I install VMWare Player the system works fine, but, right after the first reboot, external usb keyboard (tried many of them) stops working. If I try to unplug the usb keyboard, the host system freezes and I have to force a reboot.

If I uninstall player everything works fine again.

I tought it may be a problem with USB 3.0, so I bought an USB 2.0 express card controller but the behaviour is exactly the same.

I also tried with the evaluation version of VMWare Workstation, but nothing has changed.

Also the problem is with both Windows 7 Pro x64 and Windows 8 Pro x64.

I really don't know what to do anymore!

Thanks everyone for the help you may provide, i'm desperate!

VMplayer 5.0 on 64bit host “VNLInstallNetworkAdapterW2K: failed to set connection name for device”

$

Issue: networkAdapter VMnet1 and VMnet8 fail to be named correctly.

ipconfig will show the description of the  virtual adapters but names as "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection X"  (where x is the next avalable adapter)

Expected was the adapter named "VMware Network Adapter VMnet8" as it is on the 32bit host system.

Why is the re-name failing only on 64 bit host systems?  But sometimes work on some hardware, but not all hardware?

Hardware:

VMplayer 5.0 on 64-bit win7 hosts

One laptop; one desktop

Note that issue is NOT present on 32 bit win7 host.  Is 64bit only as observed.

Fix: for laptop only… un-install vmplayer 5.0, re-install vmplayer 5.0 (the repair option on install did not work!)

Also: upgrade from vmplayer 4.0.3 also seemed to work for laptop only.

Fix for Desktop: none yet, the above re-install did not work.

mounting .vmdk, back in VMware Player 5.0.1?

According to the release notes, VMware-player-5.0.1-894247.exe has the following:

"The ability to mount a .vmdk file as a drive by right-clicking the file in File Explorer has been restored."

It does not work for me. It would be useful. Any ideas?

(The host OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. VMware-vix-disklib-1.2.0-230216.i386 has not been installed, vmware-mount is not the issue).

Win98SE Game sound configuration

$

Hi, I recently installed Win 98SE in VMware Player. Also installed SB PCI driver and the got the sound working.

However when I try to configure sound for a particular game, it keeps telling me they can't find the drivers(see attached). I tried every option on the list. The game itself runs fine, only without sound which is crucial.

This is a pretty noob question(blush) but what should I do to get the sound working?

Or is this game too old for this driver? I tried installing other drivers( SB16/AWE32 driver, Stand-alone driver release of Sound Blaster Audio PCI (CT481x) ) but SB PCI seems to be the only driver that does a successful installation..

I'm trying to replicate in VMWare Player the exact same conditions I have under my Dedicated Server for testing purposes.

Now, the thing is that that when I try to install something, or ping http://google.com, it fails since it has no connection.

what do I do to fix it??

I'm not much of a sys admin, but i'll get there (This is my first Dedicated Server), I ordered a minimal OS to learn. so please, try to explain things in detail and with patience.

Thanks in advance!!

Win8 + WP8 SDK + vmware player: i can't start any VMs

$

Hi to everyone, until today i've used vmware player for 3-4 VMs with different OSs for test my application on my PC, but today, when i try to start every VM i receive this error.

error.png

All starts when i've installed visual studio 2012 and the Windows Phone 8 SDK, that request to add hyper-V role to windows 8.

So, i need both things, the VMs and Visual studio with WP8 SDK.
How can i do?
Thanks to all.

The physical disk is already in use, win7 host, ubuntu guest, Vmware player v5

$

The host is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1, VMware Player version 5.0.1 build-894247 which is the latest as of today, and the guest OS is Ubuntu 12.10 desktop 32bit. Everything is a fresh install from today. I used the easy install option and Ubuntu installed by itself with no problem.

I have 4 SATA drives in an external enclosure connected to the PC through eSATA to an eSATA card. The card shows up as Silicon Image SiL 3132 SoftRaid 5 Controller Chip Type SST 39VF020. The 4 drives show up as individual disks in Windows Disk Manager. I have not done any config on the raid.

I am trying to add the 4 disks to Ubuntu as raw physical disks, so I can play with Linux LVM features. While I can add a physical drive through the VM Settings page, and I can see VMWare picks up the right drive and shows the right size, when I try to start the VM, I get this error

"The physical disk is already in use. Cannot open the disk 'C:\Users\HP\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu\Ubuntu-1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.".

The drives have nothing on them, so I always chose to use the whole disk. I have tried making the disks offline and online, same issue. I have tried starting VMWare Player as administrator, same issue. I tried no partition on the disks or create a raw partition, same issue. Tried formatting the partition, same issue.

So I am running out of ideas. The only thing I notices is vmware player is trying to add the disks as IDE when these are SATA disks. Not sure if that's an issue, but there is no option to define a hard drive as any other type anyway... Can someone help me?

Hello!
Is it normal to have problems with wmware player after upgrading from windows7 to windows8?
first: It was impossible to lunch any guest host, I did change the value of this line: "vmci0.present" from TRUE to FALSE to get it started
and then now I don't have network in all guest hosts, I tried with bridge and NAT mode, It doesn't work
and I found this error in the log file:
vmx| I120: [msg.dictionary.load.openFailed] Cannot open file "C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation\config.ini": Unknown error 2 (0x2).

VMware Player Bridged using wireless NIC on host

I am running a windows 7 laptop  with a wireless NIC.  When I create my vm (win2k8) and bridge it to the wireless NIC it gets an IP, but can't get to anything.  I can't ping the gateway or my host IP.  My host does not have any connectivity issues.  I also tried vmware server 2 and get the same results.  It seems to work if I use the ethernet port.  One thing I did notice is that in the player it shows vmnet0, vmnet1, and vmnet8, however in my network adapters on the host I do not see vmnet0 (bridged) listed.

Let me know if there is a trick to getting this to work.
