Enable Shared Folders and Virtual Printers by default in VMware Player 12.5

$

Hello,

We have a requirement to use shared folders in our environment, and we are using SCCM to push out the VMware Player to all machines that require it. Unfortunately I'm having some trouble getting both Virtual Printers and Shared Folders enabled by default.

I'm using the ENABLE_VIRTUAL_PRINTERS=1 option on the install command line, which seems to work SOME of the time, but not always, but that's not my main concern, just an annoyance.

My main concern, is there seems to be no way to get VMware Player to automatically allow all shared folders to be enabled by default, like you can in Workstation. We also push out a VM to these laptops, and whenever we fire it up, it pops up a message to say that Shared Folders have been disabled by default. I do not want my users to have to go into the VM each time we update it, and reenable shared folders.

I've seen various articles around about using
pref.enableAllSharedFolders = "TRUE"
, which I shoved into the settings.ini file in the same place the virtual printer setting is, but that doesn't seem to work either. My VMX file also has
isolation.tools.hgfs.disable = "false"
in it as well, and also tried
sharedFolder.option="alwaysEnabled"
but nothing seems to work.

How can I get shared folders to be enabled by default in Player?

Thanks in Advance

Help please with error 1327 invalid drive z:\

I have workstation player 12.5.2 build 4638234. I run win xp in it and this works fine. I have several progs in xp that run fine. I am trying to install cyberlink powerproducer and powerdirector inside this machine but get the error 1327 invalid drive z:\. I know the cd drive is recognised as I was able to install the driver for the usb device from another cd ok. I have tried copying the cd to the hard drive and running from there. I still get the same error.

Any ideas please.

Tks Geoff.

run VM at specific date for startup.

I have a centos7 VM running under VMWare Player. I have changed the vmx file so that

tools.syncTime = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.continue = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.restore = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.resume.disk = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.shrink = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.tools.startup = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.tools.enable = "FALSE"

time.synchronize.resume.host = "FALSE"

rtc.startTime = "1463290457"

And it works. The VM date at startup is in May 2016.

Several months later, I have created another VM of centos 7 under VMPlayer 12.5.2. Again changed the above and this time it starts with date set to now.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to debug this?

There is nothing in the VMware.log that I can see that is useful. The values in the vmx file are loaded.

How to add VMware to Windows-Firewall?

[ENGLISH]

Hello,

how must I add VMware to the Windows-Firewall to allow the VM to communicate externally / internally ?

(↓ Better configuration ↓)

I add port 80 and 443 on the hostsystem (outgoing and incoming) but the VM don't use this ports. Although they also use ports 80 and 443. This is the case with every port.

How do I make the VMs use the ports?

The VM are NAT

Hallo,

Hello,

I have issue with smart card - it is electronic signature USD - miniLector S Evo by Bit4Id. I have host Ubuntu 16 64bit / VMWare PLayer 12 with Win7 32bit.

In Linux there is no problem with the card. I see it - I can use it. Unfortunately some local government agencies doesn't support Linux. So I try to install the card in Win 7. The issue is that the windows doesn't see it. The VM see it as shared devices. When I try to install it says "There is no card recognised by provider" - in normal instalation Win7 see the card.

What I did after that? I try that one, but it doesn't work http://pubs.vmware.com/player-12-linux/index.jsp#com.vmware.player.linux.using.doc/GUID-78E5618F-BD2D-4169-91A4-8FDDCD4C823B.html

I try to make that one VMware Workstation 12 Player for Linux Documentation Center  with same result

Hello,

I was using a virtual machine then I suspended it. Now I'm trying to use it again and it keeps showing this error.

The others virtual machines I have doesn't returns this error.

Some things I've tried already and didn't work:

- Rename the vmplayer.exe file;

- Restart vmware services;

- Restart windows management instrumentation service;

- Tried to delete .lck file (couldn't find it inside the folder);

Someone has any other suggestion for me to try?

Thanks

Host NIC cannot connect after VMware Player installation

Hi,

I've just installed VMware Player on a HP Z440 workstation with Windows 7 x64.

Everything seems fine except that sometimes when I start the computer the physical NIC don't connect to the network.

Most of the time I can just disable the NIC and enable it again to fix the problem, but obviously something is wrong.

If I disable the VMware NIC's I don't get any problems.

I have a VM installed which is using bridged network, but my issue occurrs before I even start the VM.

Any ideas of how to solve this?

How to adjust the screen resolution of Linux guestOS for WELCOME Screen (not for later desktop)?

$

Assume I created a Linux (Mint) guestOS with newest VMware Workstation player under 64bit Win 7 hostOS.

Now I can adjust the display resolution inside the Linux system for the general desktop after Login.

However this screen resolution is NOT applied to the first (after boot) Welcome screen (where the user enters username and password).

Here it is always a small minimum screen resolution.

How can I adjust here (= for WELCOME screen) the display resolution to another value?

NAT: DNS returns bogus entries

Almost the same thing as a few years ago happened:

server 1.0.10 NAT: DNS not working

xerces8 wrote (Nov 2, 2009 1:40 PM):

I just updated VMWare Server from 1.0.9 to 1.0.10 and now DNS does not work in guest that have set up NAT networking.

Tried Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, also Windows XP. All using default (automatic) network settings.

I can ping any numerical address, but DNS resolution does not work.

If I set manually a DNS server offered by my ISP in the guests, then it works.

Is this some regression with 1.0.10 ? I'm sure the same VM worked before the update.

Regards,

David

This time I was using VMWare Player 5.0.2 on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.

I had a few VMs working fine.

Then I updated to Player 6.0.0, created a new VM for Windows8 and installed Windows 8.1 Preview into it.

There I noticed tha DNS does not work;

- ping 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server) - works

- nslookup www.najdi.si returns:

C:\Users\stein>nslookup www.najdi.si
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  192.168.91.2

Name:    www.najdi.si.localdomain
Addresses:  89.143.229.238

- ping www.najdi.si gives:

Ping request could not find host www.najdi.si. Please check the name and try again.

- ipconfig /all output:

C:\Users\stein>ipconfig /all

A Ubuntu guest VM also had problems with DNS resolution (worked fine before), so I decided to revert back to Player version 5.0.2.

It did not help, so I uninstalled it, cleaned up ( "Manually cleaning a Windows system" at VMware KB: Cleaning up after an incomplete uninstallation on a Windows host ) and then reinstalled Player v5.0.2.

After that a quick test with http://www.sysresccd.org ISO worked, but when I tried the Windows 8.1 VM the problems started again.

I started the SystemRescueCd again and I got:

% ping rtv.si
PING rtv.si.localdomain (91.185.213.134) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 91.185.213.134: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=13.1 ms
64 bytes from 91.185.213.134: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=13.9 ms

This is slightly better, but still not correct (it should say "PING rtv.si" , not "PING rtv.si.localdomain").

It seems the DNS server of VMWare Player is sending broken replies.

Any idea how to resolve this?

Can't install custom serial port drivers

$

The host PC has a high speed serial card fitted ("Brainboxes" RS422/485 PCi), plus its respective driver software. In Control Panel -> Device Manager the card's two serial ports appear as "Brainboxes RS422/485 Serial Port (COM8)" and "Brainboxes RS422/485 Serial Port (COM9)". They work fine when I talk to them from the host PC.

I now need to talk to the com ports from the guest machine. I've configured the VM's settings to expose these serial ports, and on the guest machine (Win7) I can see them in Control Panel -> Device Manager, appearing as COM2 and COM3. Unfortunately my software is unable to talk to them, failing to open the serial port. The error message is "The parameter is incorrect", which I believe is due to using a high baud rate (921600) which isn't supported by "vanilla" com ports - hence the need for the Brainboxes driver.

I installed their driver on the guest machine, then tried to update the two com ports (COM2 & COM3) with this driver. However the guest PC crashes at this point with a blue screen of death. Occasionally it will update the driver, but when I restart the PC I get the blue screen again and have to run a Windows repair to rollback the driver installation. Any thoughts?

Change VMwareDND from TEMP to other location

Hello,first off all Merry Christmas to all and Happy new Year!

In Windows:

When we use drag and drop feature it makes first one copy of desired file into folder VMwareDND that is located in Appdata->Temp folder.After that, vmware copy the file to the final location.

-My question is:

Is it possible to change the location of this folder to another hard drive or force vmware to do direct copy?

Cheers!

Workstation Player Not Reading CD/ISO files

I have installed Workstation Player 12.5 on a Windows 10 machine.  I have not been able to install an operation system.  When I created a new VM and set the CD to an ISO file, the VM tries to boot from the network skipping over the CD/ISO file even if I have the CD as the first boot device in BIOS.  Any suggestions?  I have tried with three separate systems, Win 98 OEM, Win 98 Retail and Win98SE OEM.  All iso images are bookable discs.

Any ideas?

Host DHCP renewal causes guest network hiccup

$

Hi,

I'm using Workstation Player 12.5.2 build-4638234 (latest?) on an Ubuntu 16.04 (4.4.0-57-generic), with an Ubuntu 16.04 (same) guest. The wifi network I'm connecting to has a small (5 mins) DHCP lease time. (This setting is out of my control.) As a result, the host renews the DHCP config quite often (2-5 mins), and every time it does, the guest experiences a small network disconnect. This causes, for instance, a web browser running on the guest to often report pages as unavailable. This is very annoying, and it's something that doesn't happen with a browser running on the host. I'm trying to understand if there's a way to avoid such "hiccups". Specifically, why does the guest network adapter have to go down&up for every such event?? Thanks!

My detailed network settings are below:

- The host uses a wifi connection, managed by NetworkManager, with DHCP.

- The VM has 2 virtual network adapters, one NAT and one host-only. Both are set to use fixed IPs. The host-only adapter has no issues. Here is the config for the NAT adapter:

# /etc/vmware/vmnet8/dhcpd/dhcpd.conf

allow unknown-clients;
default-lease-time 1800;                # default is 30 minutes
max-lease-time 7200;                    # default is 2 hours
subnet 192.168.71.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
        range 192.168.71.128 192.168.71.254;
        option broadcast-address 192.168.71.255;
        option domain-name-servers 192.168.71.2;
        option domain-name localdomain;
        default-lease-time 1800;                # default is 30 minutes
        max-lease-time 7200;                    # default is 2 hours
        option netbios-name-servers 192.168.71.2;
        option routers 192.168.71.2;
}
host vmnet8 {
        hardware ethernet 00:50:56:C0:00:08;
        fixed-address 192.168.71.1;
        option domain-name-servers 0.0.0.0;
        option domain-name "";
        option routers 0.0.0.0;
}

- In the guest, both adapters are set to use static IPs through NetworkManager:

# /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/NAT\ Network

...

[ipv4]
address1=192.168.71.10/24,192.168.71.2
dns=192.168.71.2;
dns-search=
method=manual
...

- Here is what I see in syslog during DHCP renewal, apart from other NM-related messages:

To create a virtual OS that only works on a PC or on a Windows 10 license

Can I create a virtual operating system that only works on a PC? I do not want that a user can have a virtual operating system on 1000 different computer copying vmware files into others PC. Can I use VMware Workstation Player for this purpose, or should I use the Pro version? Do you have an Italian guide for my problem?

Right now I'm using VirtualBox, but it does not have this specific function so I'm thinking to migrate to VMware.

Thank you and I am sorry for my English

Keyboard Not Working after VMWare Conversion

$

Hello,

I'm trying to run a VMware Conversion of an old laptop as a backup. I've run a VMware conversion and converted it to a vm 9 image file.

When it gets opened in VMware Player everything works except for the keyboard inputs. The only way I can type on the screen is using either the on screen keyboard or connecting in with TeamViewer.

Looking in Device Manager shows that the following error.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Has anyone come across this before and know if a solution?

Thanks

Peter Sheridan
