How to disable message "Operation on file ... failed"

$

Hi everybody,

I've a big problem with my virtual machine.

This is created to test hard disks with a bootable media.

It's needed because when I test them with my host system it hangs constantly.

The problem I have is the error message when there is a sector with errors found.

There comes the message "Operation on file '\\.\PhysicalDrive1' failed" where I always press continue.

The message appears 30 times before the sector is marked.

How can I disable this message so that all errors are automatically forwarded to the guest OS?

Apple Mac OS X not showing up in list of 'Guest Operating Systems'?

As per title, when I go to make a new virtual machine, Apple Max OS X is not available anymore. This has only started happening since I updated VMWare Workstation Player 12, but I reverted to an older version and the problem is still there. What is going on? All help would be greatly appreciated!

VMWare Player icon anomaly

After the last VMWare Player update, I noticed a change in the icon that is displayed on a shortcut as well as the executable file.  Instead of the four-point yellow star, I now see a generic sheet of paper.

BUT, if I go to the properties page for the shortcut, the proper icon is displayed, and a portion of it is shown on the folder where I have placed the shortcut. The proper icon is also shown on the properties page for the executable.

To further add to the confusion, I tried logging on to a full administrator account, and the proper icon was displayed in all locations.

Very strange............

USB Headset Audio Stuttering (only when mic enabled as input device)

For Workstation 12, Windows 10 host, Ubuntu 14.04 guest:  I have a Kingston HyperX Cloud II USB headset/mic combo that I like to use for voice communications via google hangouts.  If I attach the device to a linux guest (tried both ubuntu and centOS), set the headphones to the output device AND the headset mic as the input device, I receive audio stuttering in the VM.  Now the interesting thing is that if I disable the headset mic as the input device the audio stuttering goes away and all is well (except that I can't use the mic of course).

When using the headset in the Windows 10 host OS, I have no such problems and the headset works fine with the mic enabled.

Has anyone else run across this issue, or perhaps had any success with USB headsets in a Linux guest?  Any thoughts on what to try that might resolve the issue?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

It really sucks - VMWare killed unity mode in Player 12. Had I known I would have stuck to Player 7 - it was working fine.

Anyone know if there's any way to get the installer for 7?

Thanks

A couple of years ago I asked this question already without satisfying solutions.

Maybe this function is included in the meantime,

So may I ask again:

After starting, work and exit of a VM (under Win 7 hostOS) I found lots of cache files in subfolder "caches".

Is there a way to tell VMware player to automatically cleanup them when exiting the VM (or Vmware player)?

Is there at least a way to move the cache folder to another directory (e.g. the win 7 system default temp directory C:\temp\)

I could imagine that a paramter is now included in *.vmx file for these purposes

Windows 10 in VMware Workstation 12 Player (V. 12.5.1): No USB devices

I installed two Windows 10 Insider Builds 14959 (32 and 64 bit) with VMware Player 12. In both systems are under "Removable Devices" no USB devices displayed. There are only CD/DVD (SATA), Netword Adapter, Printer and Sound Card to find.

The USB-drivers are included in the settings, and in the vmx-files all relevant entries stand on "TRUE". The Player himself is installed under Windows 10 Pro 1607 (64 bit), and the VMwareTools are up to date. What can I do to integrate the USB devices?

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 with a Windows 7 guest OS. When I try to use Windows Update, it never works. The guest OS's internet connection works, just not Windows Update. I get the message "an error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 80072f76 Windows encountered an unknown error."

Using an bootable partition

I'm a Linux snob.  Recently my laptop died and I ended up with a new one that came with MS Windows 10.  I shrunk the C drive, 50-50 and installed Ubuntu and here we are.  I can shutdown, start, select door #1 or door #2.  What I'd like to do is run Linux and on the rare occasion run Vmplayer and bring up W10.

So the question is:  how do / can I create a new VM and use /dev/sda1 (w10)?

Thanks

Download-Link/URL for the always the newest VMware Tools package for all guest+hostOS?

Assume I don't want to let VMware Workstation/Player do the job and install VmWare Tools but do it manually by myself.

So at first I need a download page where I can get ALWAYS the newest VMWare Tools ISO packages.

Again: I am NOT searching for an URL which shows the CURRENT newest Tools package but a more general, generic URL which points always (even in the future)

to the newest package.

When I go for example to:

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?productId=491&downloadGroup=VMTOOLS1000

then this download URL is outdated since the newest Tools package is (at least v10.0.5

Unfortuantely I found no further link on the given webpage above to the NEWEST webpage.

It must be something like

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?productId=491&downloadGroup=VMTOOLSNEWEST

or similar.

I am particularly interested in the original Ü*.iso files and not an *.exe package

Can someone help me?

Thank you

Failed to initialize library for mounting and unmounting virtual disks workstation 9

I am using VMware Workstation 9.0.4 build-1945795 and having an issue with "Map Virtual Disks". I have tried to map a virtual disk on windows server 2008 r2, windows server 2008, windows 7, windows xp,windows 2000, windows 98 and DOS 6.22. I have went to File - Map Virtual Disks and get "Failed to initialize library for mounting and unmounting virtual disks" everytime I try to map no matter what OS for virtual machine. Some have snapshot while others do not this is a mix of 64 bit and 32 bit virtual machines. My system is Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. What am I missing here because if there is a feature available on the menu you would seem to expect it to actually work on something.

VMware: vmw_ioctl_command error Invalid argument.

Hi!

I have a problem with VMware® Workstation 12 Player 12.5.1 build-4542065.

I use Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit and Qt 5.7 with OpenGL.

I created a simple project with OpenGL.

The project crashes in run-time with an error message "VMware: vmw_ioctl_command error Invalid argument.".

If I turn off "3D graphics/Accelerate 3D graphics" then the error dissapear, but it works very slow. It isn't the solution.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Can no longer drag and drop into the Virtual Desktop from the Host Desktop

$

Hello,

I have VMware Player 3.1.5, installed to Windows 7 Starter, SP1.

I realisee that this is an old version of the VMware Player, but would appreciate help.

(I had to choose this version of VMware Player in order to install Win98SE - later versions of VMware Player do not support this Guest OS. The Win98SE is for the purpose of running some old, but still useful, applications that do not run in the Host operating system Windows 7.)

I can no longer "drag and drop" files / folders into the Virtual Desktop, from the Host Desktop.

I can still do it the other way round.

Until recently, "drag and drop" between the VM installed Guest operating system Desktop and the host real Desktop, worked fine.

This Win98SE guest operating system does not support / is not supported for, the alternative Import method, of using Shared folders.

The antivirus installed to the Host operating system is Avast and I always disable it when using the VM.

When I try to "drag and drop" from the Host system to the Guest VM, there is no error message, but the "read-only" pointer symbol appears (a circle with two "diameter" lines in it) instead of the usual pointer's "dragging file" symbol, and NO transfer takes place.

I have tried "dragging and dropping": a folder, a simple .txt format file, and a Microsoft Word file.

I have no restore points available dated prior to August 7, 2016, the date when the VM's Import function last worked.

The following is what I have tried to do to resolve the issue:

Rebooting.

("VMware Player 3.1.5" does not run in Safe Mode.)

Used "MSCONFIG" with minimum 'Startup' items Enabled (but including "VMWare Workstation" enabled).

Carried out a "Repair" of "VMware Player 3.1.5" (which can only be done from its original installer file).

Within "VMWare Player", carried out a "Repair" of its VM Tools".

It detects a new version of VM Tools but is unable to install it.

VM Tools are installed.

Individually uninstalled all but one, of the Windows Security and Non-Security Updates that have been installed till now since August 7, 2016 (which was the date when the Import function of VMWare Player was last used successfully), testing VMWare Player's Import function after each individual Windows Update uninstall.

(Did NOT test the following Windows Update types (installed since August 7, 2016 - see above):

.NET Framework Updates,

Microsoft Office Updates,

and one Silverlight Update.)

I also replaced the VM folder with a Backup made prior to the issue.

I dIsabled both Avast Antivirus and Comodo Firewall, and then tested the VM's Import function.

I uninstalled the VMware Player, and then reinstalled it.

I uninstalled Avast antivirus, then used the Avast Clean Tool to ensure complete removal, and then tested the VM's Import function.

All the above changes were reversed using System Restore.

Then I replaced the Backup VM I had tried, with the version I had been using when the Import function had failed.

I then found that the Import function worked , but because there was no logical reason why it should have been "repaired" - since in effect, NO changes had been made since it failed, I suspected correctly that this "miracle" would be temporary. Therefore I rebooted the computer and tested the VM's Import function again, when (of course) it did NOT work.

I have no idea why it failed, nor why it worked just temporarily, and it is NOT working now.

I would appreciate help in restoring the VM's Import ("drag and drop") function.

Regards,

Robert333

I want to edit my first message, to show here what was the solution (I had omitted to mention that I had started elevating the application with "Run as administrator"). Be warned that this applies to any application to which you wish to "drag and drop" ! :

QUOTE FROM:

WILA. 06-Nov-2016 03:55:

File drag and drop functionality only works when both source as well as target are running under the same user account.

So if you start VMPlayer via "run as administrator" then you cannot drag and drop files anymore.

This is by design and is an active security measure of how Windows works. (see also: windows 7 - Drag and Drop File into Application under run as administrator - Super User)
