Cloning of vmdk

$

I'm reporting this as didnt get an answer and by adding addiitonal info maybe people think I did. Plus I know a bit more

I have been using vmware player on my Win 7  Pro 64-bit pc. I have  installed a 64-bit Win 7 OS and been happily using it for 3 months. In  the last few days I have started getting sporadic errors after the  windows desktop has loaded.

"The operation on the file U:\Users\Mike\Documents\Virtual Machines\Windows 7 x64\windows 7 x64.vmk" has failed"

I now know that one of the HD in my RAID 1 assembly is failing.  I am now working just off the good disk, but still getting the error above.  My question now is any point trying to clone the vmdk or if there is a problem with the file I'm just duplicating it and therefore need ot do a fresh install?  if I can try cloning can someone give me simple instructions as got really confused reading the info I found on the site.

Thanks for any advice

Mike

If I upgrade to a higher version of VMware player will all my previous VMware-machines be deleted

Hi guys,

I am trying to update my Vmware to the free version 5.0.0.Currently I have a large number of Vmwares installed on my current version and a lot of important data. When I tried to check for updates and download it said that I would have to uninstall the current vmware player to continue. Does this mean I will lose all the vmware machines with their data too? Would I have to install all the os's again from scratch. Also if i download the update once and cancelled(because of the above question ) do I have to download the update all over again or is the setup stored somewhere?

Com Port Problem

I'm running XP Pro on both host and guest, VMware Player 5.

The application running on the guest must use Com2.

So virtual Com2 on guest is mapped to physical Com1 on host.

Com port serial settings on host and guest match.

Device manager on host shows only Com1.

Loopback test plug is on host's physical Com1 port.

Hyperterminal on host Com1 shows loopback is good.

"Edit Virtual machine settings" shows Serial Port 2 Using Port Com1.

Startup Virtual Machine.

Device manager on guest shows Com2.

"Player, Removeable Devices" shows Serial Port 2 running.

Loopback test plug is still on host's physical Com1 port.

Hyperterminal on guest opens and connects, but shows no loopback.

Remove loopback test plug and attach RS232 device to host's Com1 port.

Application cannot see attached device.

Any Ideas?

Thanks!

Problems to use my IP as URL -VMWare Network settings?

Hello,

I got some issues with trying to use my IP address (via VMWare Player - windows serv. 2008 enterprise) but I keep getting like, the page does not respond or such error messages. What i'm trying to do is to host a website on the server PC with IIS, but i'm not sure why it doesn't work to run it over the IP (of course it works in localhost) but that's not relevant in this case I guess..However, I was wondering if it MIGHT be some network setting inside VMWare Player Settings? At the moment under "Network Connections" in the settings panel I have "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network".

P.S. The IPv4 Address on windows server 2008 ends with .200, while my pc (the host) ends with .3. Yesterday I managed to make the WinServ to have .19 on the end, I don't know if that matters in this case though.

P.S.S. The right ports are opened as well so I don't really get it why it doesn't work...

I hope any of you guys can help me to solve my problem -i'd appreciate it very very much!

Best Regards,

Anton

How to disable deviant uses of virtual device?

My 16 year old son and his friends are using the virtualization to play online games withot paying for the software.

I am very worried.

What they do is like this:

They download the trial versions of software.

Then software is used in a virtualized mode.

Somehow they can use the software again and again.

What I need is HOW TO TECHNICALLY STOP or INTERRUPT or CORRUPT their virtual system.

Note.

My son is very rebelious.

I can't just tell him to stop or shut his machine down.

This will cause endless troubles.

I need technics to counter act with him and he will surrender himself.

Help, please.

Thank you!

Hang on startup

Greetings!

About 5 month ago I backedup a WinXP PC with 2 disks and run it with VMWarePlayer, worked fine.

Turning off was done with  suspend I guess.

It run well with Version 3 and 4

A few day ago I started VMWarePlayer with the sayed WinXP - however VMwarePlayer hangs at startup.

I just see a short message 'VMWarePlayer loading..' or so and then ... black screen ... nothing happens. I let it run a long time, nothing.

I tried it also with VMwarePlayer 5 with no success.

I have attached  vmware.log, maybe someone can give me a hint.

Thanks for reading

ssh fromhost to guest

Hello,

There is old problem, but, may be, something changed :-)

VMware Player 4.0.4 build-744019

Network adapter - NAT.

Host - Win7 64 Professional

Guest - FreeBSD 8.2 i386

ssh connection (i use Putty) from host to guest has broken after host is hibernating or sleeping.

I watch "interface down. no carrier" in guest log.

Instead, all connection made from host to external world has preserved.

I think this issue is related to interface "power saving", but can't find any catch.

And all connection has preserved, when I use 3.x Player and Vista as hosts.

Virtual machine with “Windows XP 32 bit” on “Intel I7-2820QM processor”

Hi,

I like to use the VMware Player on a laptop with an Intel I7-2820QM processor. This processor does not support the 32 bit instruction set.

Can I use a virtual machine with “Windows XP 32 bit” on the above laptop?

What are the disadvantages of this application?

Thanks in advance.

Technical support assistance with standalone VMWare player tools

Due to the closed environment in which I am currently working, it is not possible to download the VMWare tools from the guest host OS.  I am using CentOS to install a Cisco application .  All seems to work fine until I try to load up the VMWare tools.  I cannot change my configuration to access the internet.  I noticed the site to download the ISO file but it is restricted.  Can this be elevated in the technical support teams to allow the download of the ISO, and if so where are the instructions to install it once the ISO is downloaded?

Not a fan of the blue menu bar : /

I just updated to VMWare Player 5 from version 4.  I was really excited to see that the aweful blue frame was removed in favor of a standard window border.  Then I saw the big thick blue menu bar that occupies a considerable portion of the top of the window yet contains very little content.  The word "Player" and 4 icons occupy a very small part of this very large bar, 90% of which is just empty wasted space.  While it gives the window that Windows 7 look and feel, it really eats into the usable space and sort of distracts from whats running below.

I know I can change to fullscreen and allow the bar to transform and autohide..which I sometimes do...but there's also times when I prefer to run the VM in a window.  Sometimes I'll watch video in a fullscreen setting on the VM..but with vmware player in a windowed state that i can resize.

Is there any way to hide this beast?  If not..could an option be considered down the road to allow users to hide it somehow.  Something like an autohide, or perhaps hold down alt to display an oldschool style menu bar.  Ideally something compact yet functional similar to Firefox's "Firefox" button that takes over when you hide it's menu bar.

parity bit support with virtual serial port

$

Hi all,

I've got 2 virtual machines, one XP, the other Ubuntu 12.04, both 32 bit.  The host machine is Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit.  Both virtual machines are "conneted" via a virtual serial port that uses a socket file on the host.

When I run putty in XP and minicom in Linux, the communication is correct, I can transmit and receive characters on both sides.

What I really need to do is use a specific serial protocol between the two VMs.  This serial protocol forces the parity bit to indicate the start of a "packet".  Unfortunately I cannot change this aspect of the project, I must have compatibility with this protocol to do software testing.

When I run the windows XP test application it constantly sends a type of "poll" packet.  On the Linux side I see that there is data arriving, but it is filtered out as junk by the line discipline running because the parity bit was not set.

I have tried the "Yield CPU on poll" checkbox setting in both VMs with no change in behavior.

My questions:

Is there a setting in the vmx file that would tell the virtual serial device driver to treat the serial port as "raw" and to honor the parity bit?  If not, is there a way to enable a 9-bit mode, where the parity bit is encoded as part of the data stream?

Related question - are CTS/RTS and DTR/DSR supported?  I haven't found any documentation stating one way or another.

Thanks!

virtual machines in cloud?

Hi i have created couple virtual machines, which i regularly use for my own learning purposes. Each VM is around 25 GB, I wanted to know if I could move my existing virtual machines to a cloud. So that i need not carry it an external hardrive. I am hoping to get more flexibility from it.. Any thoughts or experiences? Is it possible? if So, can you also provide options for it. If Not, can elaborate on why it is not possible.

Thx,

E

How do I get my RAM back?

I only used VMware player for several class projects but decided to uninstall it since it used up so much of my Ram. I've researched and can't seem to find an answer as to how to regain the Ram that has been driver locked even after the uninstall. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

VMware Player 4.0.5 - crash during unity mode

$

Hi

Recently did a fresh install with VMware Player 4.0.5 on Windows 7 x64 SP1, with a virtual machine running Windows XP 32-bit SP3.  The only things I use inside the VM are a web browser (Internet Explorer 8) and an SSL VPN client.  As the VMware Tools for VMware Player 4.0.5 do not appear to be downloadable, I manually installed VMware Tools v9.0.0 build 782409 from another machine.

Since I've started using it I get a crash about 1-2 times per day (message box displayed on-screen), resulting in being unable to use the VM. The vmware-vmx.exe and vmplayer.exe processes are both still running, and I have to kill them with task manager.

I would speculate that this looks like a bug, so don't necessarily expect a quick-fix but am hoping it will contribute to a more stable release in future.

I primarily use the VM in unity mode; I suspect the problem is related to this based on a hunch and the contents of the vmware.log file, but I don't have proof of this.

The vmware.log file of the VM contains a lot of information, but the following appear to be the relevant bits.  The full dump and vmware.log files of the 3x recent occurences are attached to this post.

12.04 was just fine, but with 12.10 I am facing several problems.

1) missing amd microcode. Solution is: sudo apt-get install amd64-microcode. But why it is missing???

2) no blur in dash and left panel, they are just black. In CCSM chose Active blur, but no effect has landed. I have no any solution.

P2V Unable Cycle Multiple Monitors

$

Hi - I recently converted my physical Windows 7 X64 system to a virtual. All went well except I am not able to cycle multiple monitors (2 displays). When I click on the button, it flickers for a bit, a scroll bar appears at the bottom. At that point, I'm not able to click "keep changes" and eventually reverts back to a single display. The host system is set up normally to extend the display across monitors, no problems there. It just seems like in the VMWare Player (and workstation) the secondary monitor is not being detected properly. Anyone else have this experience? Forgot to mention my host device is also Windows X64 as well.

Thanks,

Slackware 14.0 Installation Problems

Slackware seems to be a popular developers distro but VM Player doesn't seem to work with it. I have gone through all the steps it even does the partitions and installs the operating system completely but when I restart the virtual machine without the ISO mounted it doesn't boot the linux partition it looks for it but does not start up. Instead it returns: Operating system is missing

I'm running on a win7 x64 AMD Phenom II N620 Dual-Core Processor 2.80 GHz with 4 Gigs of RAM

The slackware distro is version 14.0 x64 edition using the kernel version 2.6 custom build from slackware called

kernel-huge-3.2.29-x86_64-1.txz(This is the actual filename from the slackware site)

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what to do to have this particular distro work properly I am all ears.
