I've recently installed Player on a Windows 7 PC. I can create VMs, but when I try to start them, I get the error:
ASSERT d:/build/ob/bora-894247/bora/vmcore/vmx/main/timeTracker_user.c:232 bugNr=148722
followed by:
Error while powering on: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to.
While researching, I found KB 1227 which addresses this exact problem and recommends inserting three lines in config.ini. In my config.ini file I've specified these values:
host.cpukHz = "1900000"
host.noTSC = "TRUE"
ptsc.noTSC = "TRUE"
I tried with just the host.cpukHz setting at first, then added the others after that didn't work. I've also turned on time synchronization with host on all three VMs that I've created. None of these things helped.
I also found this post which refers to this problem being attributed to an incorrect estimate of the CPU speed. I checked this on my system, and according to the host.maxKHzestimate.value registry value, my processor is being estimated at 40.04 GHz. (No, that's not a typo.) Not coincidentally, I'm sure, the System screen in Windows shows the same incorrect reading. I've deleted these registry values multiple times and restarted the computer (and Player), but the estimate is always recreated at 40.04 GHz.
The processor in this system is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz, however I actually have it underclocked at 1.9 GHz. CPU-Z recognizes the core speed correctly at ~1.9GHz. I have no idea where the 40GHz estimate is coming from.
Just to be sure it wasn't a problem with VMs created on this system, I tried copying a known-working VM from another system, but I get the same errors.
This is a freshly-installed Windows 7 PC -- Player was one of the first pieces of software I loaded.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might get this thing working?
