I'll start with the stupid question first...

Hello,

i went through the whole rigmarole of signing up, to ask a different question, but as soon as i signed up and got to the community page, i was greeted with a "VMware Player 4.0 is now available" section above all the other discussions (copy/pasted below), which threw me for a toss, because i have 5.0.1 installed. is this site just not maintained, or am i missing a subtle (or even clear) distinction between the 5.0.1 version i have, and the 4.0 that the site is advertising?
Thanks,

Nilesh

New Problem with Unable to open kernel device "\\.\VMCIDev\VMX"

0
0

I am running VMware Player 5, Host operating system Windows 8, Guest operating system Windows XP.

During powerup, I'm getting the message "Unable to open kernel device "\\.\VMCIDev\VMX"

I know that editing the VMX file and changing vmci0.present = "false" allows the virtual machine to boot (and in my case it does).

But when I do that, my virtual machine can no longer connect to the network, either bridged or NAT.

Any help would be appreciated.

Track usage of each .vmdk play

Is it possible to track everytime the user plays or resume a .vmdk in VMware Player? I am not sure if this can be done at the virtual machine level or it has to be something within Windows OS in the VM. I assume there must be some software to do this. What I want to do is to make people to fill out a quick form each time they play it or resume it. And data in this form will be sent to a centralized server.

VMware Player 5 upgrade nukes (?) Win-7 host USB -- with solution (?)

About a week ago I upgraded Player to v5 (5.0.1 build-894247).

Yesterday, I connected a new USB device to my host (Windows 7). Windows couldn't find the driver. Tried to move the mouse to another port. Then I lost use of the mouse for the same reason. It was all down-hill from there.

Today, some eight housr spent on the problem, I found the solution. I avoided a dreaded re-install or Windows repair:

As I poked around, I found this evidence in setupapi.app.log:

>>>  [SetupUninstallOEMInf - usb.inf]
>>>  Section start 2012/11/29 08:45:21.648
      cmd: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VMware\USB\vnetlib64.exe" -- uninstall usb
!!!  inf: Error uninstalling OEM INF 'C:\Windows\INF\usb.inf'
!!!  inf: Error 0xe000023c: The specified file is not an installed OEM INF.
<<<  Section end 2012/11/29 08:45:21.657
<<<  [Exit status: FAILURE(0xe000023c)]
I thought that might be incriminating. Indeed, I poked around on the Internet and found a long woeful thread

that pertains to the same problem and where indeed VMware is implicated circumstantially.

Now my questions are:

  • Did I find a smoking gun? Can somebody confirm that indeed the WMware installer has the potential for damaging the USB subsystem on Windows 7? That would be a fairly signifcant problem, right?
  • How many other files might be involved? I only restored usb.inf and usb.pnf, but I see in setupapi.app.log that VMware had issues with other inf files, such as oem129.inf -- that one is not missing however.
  • Will I need to reinstall VMware player at this point or perform other maintance? Fortunately, Player 5 seems to work. An Android phone connected to the host is still happily seen by the VM.

Thanks!

Installing VMWare on Windows 8 Host

VMs will not run due to improper CPU speed estimate

I've recently installed Player on a Windows 7 PC.  I can create VMs, but when I try to start them, I get the error:

ASSERT d:/build/ob/bora-894247/bora/vmcore/vmx/main/timeTracker_user.c:232 bugNr=148722

followed by:

Error while powering on: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to.

While researching, I found KB 1227 which addresses this exact problem and recommends inserting three lines in config.ini.  In my config.ini file I've specified these values:

host.cpukHz = "1900000"
host.noTSC = "TRUE"
ptsc.noTSC = "TRUE"

I tried with just the host.cpukHz setting at first, then added the others after that didn't work.  I've also turned on time synchronization with host on all three VMs that I've created.  None of these things helped.

I also found this post which refers to this problem being attributed to an incorrect estimate of the CPU speed.  I checked this on my system, and according to the host.maxKHzestimate.value registry value, my processor is being estimated at 40.04 GHz.  (No, that's not a typo.)  Not coincidentally, I'm sure, the System screen in Windows shows the same incorrect reading.  I've deleted these registry values multiple times and restarted the computer (and Player), but the estimate is always recreated at 40.04 GHz.

The processor in this system is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz, however I actually have it underclocked at 1.9 GHz.  CPU-Z recognizes the core speed correctly at ~1.9GHz.  I have no idea where the 40GHz estimate is coming from.

Just to be sure it wasn't a problem with VMs created on this system, I tried copying a known-working VM from another system, but I get the same errors.

This is a freshly-installed Windows 7 PC -- Player was one of the first pieces of software I loaded.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might get this thing working?

USB 3.0 and Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle

I have the following configuration:

Host

Windows 7 64bit

Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Driver 2.0.4.0 Firmware 3025

Virtual

Windows 8 64bit

USB set to 3.0 in settings

I've selected the device in Player/Removable Devices/Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle -> Connect

This tells me the connection was unsuccessful.

Does the Host have to be Windows 8?

Do I have to go to VMWare Workstation (I see where it says VMWare Player does USB 3.0)

Any help is greatly appreciated. I've been researching for days with no usable results.

"Binary Translation incompatible with long mode..." error

Hi,

In brief, what I am attempting to accomplish is to take VMs (windows server 2008 r2) created via vSphere (v 4.1), copy them to a local machine, and work on them using VM Player (v 5.0.1). I'm able to create VMs without issue and move them over to my machine. When I try to run them in player I get the following errors:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/339/error1ac.png/

clicking ok gives me the following error:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/error2n.png/

If I change my vmware player so that the virtualization engine in the processor for the vm runs with Intel VT-x/EPT then I get the second error message but not the first. Troubleshooting the second message told me that I should make sure Intel Virtualization is enabled, which it is:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/600/pic3vo.png/

I also ran the vmware compatibility check, which came back clean:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/32/pic4wy.png/

Has anyone else encountered this error? I've tried creating a new Windows Server 2008 R2 VM on the player and I get the same error message from it. If I pick Windows Server 2008, then everything is fine.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Guest OS won't start up on VMware Player 5.0.1 since upgrading Kernel on Scientific Linux 6.3 32bit

Hi all,

Now I use VMware Player 5.0.1 (32bit) under the following environment:

Host OS: Scientific Linux release 6.3 (Carbon) 32bit

Kernel: 2.6.32-279.14.1.el6.i686

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz

Total memory: 8GB

Swap: 16GB

HDD: 2TB

Guest OS: WIndows 7 Professional Ultimate 64bit (CPU Allocation 1、Memory 2GB)

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (CPU Allocation 1、Memory 2GB)

Under the above environment, Guest OSs won't start up and Host OS forcely reboots right now.

I deploy other kernel, kernel-2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.i686 and they can do so only on it.

Personally, I think this issue will be due to Kernel update, but don't know what I should do.

Please let me know if anyone know any work-around or solution for it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

VMware Player 5.0.1 - USB No Driver Found Error.

Hello,

I've been looking around the forum for quite a while, but none of the discussions have solved my problem.

Everytime I try to connect a USB device (SanDisk Cruzer 32 GB) to my guest OS (Windows XP Professional SP3 - 32bit) I get an error message from the VMware player saying that no driver can be found. My host OS (Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1 - 64bit) can recognise the USB device and so can VMware because the device name appears in a dialogue box when I start my virtual OS up.  My computer (DELL XPS 15 L501X) uses USB 3.0 ports, however I have lowered the USB compatibility to 2.0 on VMware (see image attached) because Winbdows XP does not support USB 3.0.

I have also tried downloading Windows XP USB drivers, but it won't let me install them on my VM. I am able to run CD's/DVD's on my VM and there appears to be some USB Drivers already installed on the VM. (see image attached) VMware tools is installed on the virtual OS aswell.

I would appriciate any suggestions on how to fix this problem, so I can use USB's on my VM.

Many Thanks

Joe.

Excessive Page File Writing in Player

0
0

In general, I'm happy with Player, but I get these periods where it is (apparently) spending massive amounts of time writing to the swap file.  During these periods, the host computer is sluggish and the virtual machine is near dead.  And this can extend for *minutes*.

Reading elsewhere, I see there are performance settings for Workstation (such as minVmMemPct) which can make the virtual machine use actual host RAM instead of writing to a page file.  Great stuff-- but none of the various files mentioned with Workstation appear in Player.

My host machine has 16G of RAM, and I'm rarely using more than 8G of it.  I'd like to have my virtual machines (one Windows Vista, the other Linux) each grab a couple gigabytes from the host's RAM and not waste time writing page files to disk at all.

So:

1)  Is this a good idea.

2)  How do I do this (with filenames and paths for Player, not Workstation).

VMware Player installation problem

Hi,

I am using Windows XP and tried installing latest version of VMware Player, my anti-virus (Comodo Internet Security) finds something as a malware/adware in between installation and stops going further.

It shows this error in a dialog window,

The MSI 'C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\wmware_1355027279\vmwareplayer_x86.msi' failed.

What should I do to install this software?

Thanks!

VMware Player now gives "syntax error" message; how do I fix??

About 18 months ago I installed VMware Player on my new laptop, running Windows 7 Professional (and Chome), in order to use an old software program that could not operate on my new 64-bit machine. The VM is running in Windows XP Mode - VMware. Things had been working fine up until about two weeks ago, when I opened VMware Player, the desktop was just a blank screen (except for the small VMware toolbar at the top), the Icon for the program that used to be there was gone; and when I tried to open the file I get this message:  ".......Line 1: Syntax error." Please help; I am not that well versed in computer tech and need "simple" instructions as to how to get things working again.

Thank you in advance for you help.
