Player hangs CentOS 6.2 when starting a machine

0
0

A few months ago, I downloaded the VMware Player at home because I teach at a college that uses VMware in the computer labs.  I worked fine in CentOS 6.2.

Then a few weeks ago (while the term was ending so I didn't have time to work on the problem), the Player asked me to download an update.  So, I did.  Then it said that it needed modify the kernel.  Uncomfortable as I was, the only options seemed to be let it do what it wanted or not use the Player.  So, I let it go ahead.

After that, whenver I try to start a VM, the O/S freezes.  Since the Player didn't say what it was doing, I don't know how to reconfigure the kernel to undo it (other than a fresh load of the O/S).

I tried using older versions of the Player (back to 3) without success.  I tried using an older kernel but then the Player wants to update the kernel (once bitten...) and I didn't let it do that.

I found a KB article that suggests the problem could be with the video card driver.  So, I updated the driver, rebooted a couple times and I still have the problem.

If I could, somehow (without reloading Linux), undo what the Player Update did to the kernel and/or kernel configuration, I should be able to use an older version of the Player (I think I was using 4) and I'd have a working system again.

Binaries for 32 bit Player requires 64 bit ?

Downloaded and installed the bundle for linux 32 bit. Ran vmplayer and setup a virtual disk ready to install.

  "VMware-Player-5.0.1-894247.i386.bundle

Binary DetailsVMware Player for Linux 32-bit
     File NameVMware-Player-5.0.1-894247.i386.bundle
     Build Number894247
     Release Date2012-11-06"

When selecting "Play..", the following message appears:

"VMware Player cannot run on this CPU. VMware Player requires a 64 bit CPU
with support for LAHF/SAHF in long mode."

Is this for 32 bit or not?

Windows XP guest: share mapped printers ...

Dear all,

I use VMWare player to run a Windows XP guest. The printers from the host are mapped into the Windows XP guest. But in Windows XP I have a DOS program that needs to print to one mapped Windows XP printer. Therefore I have shared the mentioned Windows XP printer and use the command net use lpt2 \\WindowsXPGuest\printer to enable printing of the DOS program to lpt2. When I test this printing via dir > lpt2: in a DOS box I can see the printing job appearing shortly in the printer jobs list but nothing is printed out. Also the VMWare host printers does NOT see this job. Printing from Windows applications in Windows XP guest works.

What went wrong with configuration?

Thank you for your help in advance,

Best regards,

Andreas.

Problems with two monitors in guest system

Hi all,

I have a problem with multicycle monitor under VMware Player Version 5.01. Hope anybody can help here.

The problem: I can switch to multicycle mode and draw the mouse to the second monitor. If I want to move a active windows to this second monitor it is only possible to move this windows a half of the way. I see it on the second monitor but can't work with it. If I open the menu over right click of mouse it appears on the main monitor. I tested it on a second PC and everything works. I deinstalled and installed VMware Player several times but without success. Already changed the setup of VMwP from automatic to custom. Without success. Tested on other system without problems.

Host: Windows 7 Ultimate

Guest: Windows XP

Monitors: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo LSL 3260W and Dell 1908FP

Successful tested system: Dell Laptop with Dell Standard VGA monitor.

Hope for positive answers

Hello,

I have a problem using my PCIexpress Realtek SD Card Reader on my Ubuntu 12.04 Virtual Machine on my Laptop.

I would like to use the SD Card under my ubuntu machine to be able to make partitions on it with fdisk.

Have you got any guide/hint on how to be able to access it in my Ubuntu VM?

I found guides for USB Card Readers but not for PCIexpress ones..

Thanks and Best Regards,

Riccardo

CPU features for 5.0.1

I cannot ugrade my VMware Player 2.0.3 to the latest 5.0.1. I'm getting the message that it "requires features not present on my CPU". I even uninstalled VMware Player, but didn't help. I looked at the minimum requirements and it say's CPU 1GHz (2 recommeded), RAM 1Gig (2 rec'd) and 150mb of disc space.  My computer has Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.0 GHz, 1GHz RAM and has 209 GB of free disc space available. I have new cd software loaded onto my computer, but I cannot access because it requires VMware.  What gives?  Thank You, Jay.

I am trying to restore a VMware image I saved on Friday.  It was working fine then.  Now I see in the logs the errors below.  How can I fix this?

EFI and Windows 8 x64 guest

Hi. I am trying to install Windows 8 guest using EFI. When I add firmware="efi", the system starts with EFI, but does not recognize the Windows x64 installer iso as EFI bootable (with the message start up from cdrom unsuccessful), and finally starts the shell. In the shell it lists the virtual drive and the cdrom as block device blk0.

When I type blk0: , it takes me to the device, but on typing ls, or any paths, it fails with the message, directory not found, Exit status code: Not Found. It is unable to browse any of the file systems on the block devices. I am attaching a screenshot of the screen.

What do I have to do to install Windows 8 in EFI mode?

The host and guest both are Windows 8 x64. Thanks

VMPLAYER and OEM Windows XP

I have a dead Dell machine that was running OEM Windows XP.  I built an image of the machine and ran it through VCenter convert to build a VM.  When I run the converted image with VMPLAYER, the OS tells me it wants to activate.  Now I understane hat the OEM version of the OS is intended to run on the piece of hardware that it was sold with, but that machine is dead.

If I purchase Windows XP, is there a way of activating the VM with the purchased XP product key?  I don't want to reinstall Windows XP because reinstalling all the programs would be a real hastle and maybe even impossible.

Any suggestions?

Connecting a DVD-Rom to XP VM?

Hello All,

I'm having a bit of trouble connecting/accessing my DVD-Rom within my Windows XP VM...

  Host: OpenSuSE 11.4

Guest: Windows XP Professional

My DVD-Rom is located at "/dev/sr0" on my host, so when I looked at the Settings for my DVD-Rom I saw that is has it as "auto detect", which doesn't seem to be working.

So I opened the vmx file and this is the settings I can see for my DVD-Rom:

     ide1:0.present = "TRUE"
     ide1:0.fileName = "auto detect"
     ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

I used this discussion here http://communities.vmware.com/thread/109842, and changed my config for my DVD-Rom to the following:

     scsi1:0.present = "FALSE"
     scsi1:0.autodetect = "TRUE"
     scsi1:0.filename = "auto detect"
     scsi1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

Which did NOT work either. So I then tried changing it to this:

     scsi1:0.present = "TRUE"
     scsi1:0.autodetect = "FALSE"
     scsi1:0.filename = "/dev/sr0"
     scsi1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

Which as you can guess did not work either.

I can see a "DVD/CD-ROM drives" in the Device Manager as "VMware, Virtual CD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device".

If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to reply.

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

VMware Player 4 - Configuration Help

Using VMware player 4.0 build 471780 on a Windows Vista Ultimate computer to run a host-only network, for a Novell Course 3078, that consists of two Linux virtual servers (DA-CORP and DA-IDM) and a single virtual workstation (DA-SLED).

The course configuration requires I select Host Virtual Network Mapping and select the button beside VMware Network Adapter VMnet1; then select Subnet.  Then it has me enter IP address 172.17.0.0 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0.

Next, it has me go to my Network Connections and select VMnet1 and set the IP Address  in TCP/IP properties as 172.17.12.150, subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and preferred DNS server 172.17.12.101.

Next, I copied the two Linux virtual servers and single virtual workstation to C:\Users\Steven\Documents\My Virtual Machines folder.

Note: I have attached a Zipped file with five screenshots of my setup.

Problem:

When I use the ping command in a terminal window on each machine to test communication between all three Virtual Machines I get “network not reachable” error.

DA-SLED                  172.17.12.101 (DA-IDM)

VM creation from DVD fails with checksum errors, works from iso.

Creation of SLES11 SP2 vm from mounted DVD fails with random checksum errors on packages read from DVD, yet the installation works from mounted iso image of same DVD.  The same DVD has been used to build multiple physical servers with no error.  Burning another DVD does not help.  We use autoyast for unattended installation with autoinst.xml on usb stick.  Note:  The DVD drive used for vm installation is the same drive that was used to create the DVD.  This trouble has been experienced by everyone at our location who has tried to create a SLES11 SP2 vm from DVD in vmplayer.  They are all using different hardware and different DVD's. This worked fine with SLES10 SP2, SP3, SP4, and SLES11 SP1. Any ideas?
