Problem with USB 3G/4G Modems in Ubuntu guest

$

Hi,

We are running VMware Player 5.0 on a Windows 7 Professional x86 host with a Ubuntu 10.04 guest setup configured.

We are trying to configure a set of 6 Sierra Wireless 3G/4G modems under the Ubuntu guest to be bonded together. The modems have automatically attached to the guest OS and are identified correctly, however they do not appear to be functioning and are not responding to any commands through minicom.

A single modem can be connected to the VM and will be correctly recognised after power cycling the modem. Attempts to power cycle multiple modems has so far been inconsistent.

The modems have been tested together on a physical Ubunto 10.04 box with the same configuration and are working normally, so the issue seems to be with the USB passthrough in VMware.

There is also an issue with inconsistent ordering of the modems in the guest OS, causing APN settings to be applied incorrectly / unpredictably  where multiple network SIMs are used.

Do you have any suggestions as to the cause of the problem or how we might troubleshoot this further?

Many thanks,

Alan

Host OS Kubuntu 12.14, 64bit

Guest OS - any.  Tried Windows 7 and CentOS

VMWare Player - 5.0.1 build 894247

When I fire up the guest and switch back to the host both with the guest running and with the guest shutdown, I find that the ctrl key is

completely disabled.  Requires a reboot of the host to get it back.  Numlock too.

Startup script for VMWARE Player on Scientific Linux 6.3 (Red Hat)

I would really like to start my VMWare Player 5.01 when my linux system starts up.  I can't find any documentation that a novice can understand.  I believe the proper way to do this is with System V scripts.  I don't know much about this.

I also know that I am not the first one with this desire.

Also, if configured properly, would the guestOS receive a system call when the hostOS is shutting down normally?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

George

Hang on startup

Greetings!

About 5 month ago I backedup a WinXP PC with 2 disks and run it with VMWarePlayer, worked fine.

Turning off was done with  suspend I guess.

It run well with Version 3 and 4

A few day ago I started VMWarePlayer with the sayed WinXP - however VMwarePlayer hangs at startup.

I just see a short message 'VMWarePlayer loading..' or so and then ... black screen ... nothing happens. I let it run a long time, nothing.

I tried it also with VMwarePlayer 5 with no success.

I have attached  vmware.log, maybe someone can give me a hint.

Thanks for reading

Although it says joysticks are not supported I read several threads stating that usb joysticks are working.

Can anyone name a product which is working on vmware?

On a Windows7 and windows XP guest I tried a 'Logitech extreme 3D pro' but this is not recognised by the system.

The host is a Windows7 with the above Joystick usable.

Thanks for hints

How to use raw disk with vmware player 5.0?

Hi!

I have nealy none experience with vmware, so perhaps it's a really stupid question, but I've been searching and trying now for some hours und didn't reach anything ...

On my system I have

1) "Win 7 old" partition on a harddisk

2) "Win 7 SSD" partion on a SSD

They are configured as dual boot with windows 7 boot manager.

Just für convenience during migration to the "new" system, I'd like to boot "Win 7 old" as a VM-guest in "Win 7 SSD" as a host.

I found "use a physical partion as a raw disk", but wizard for new vm in the player doesn't give me the option to use a raw disk neither to "add an addional disk" in hardware settings.

Is ist no a feature of "vmware player"? Do I need "workstation"?

Any other advice?

Thanks a lot in advance

Where can I get android virtual machine?

Hi,

In android there is enhanced voice search talks back to you just liki siri but I can't find the same for windows. So I thought I will run an android virtual machine but I don't know where to get one. Because android is open source there is no licensing issue here. Is there a library for open source ready made virtual machines? Does vmware itself has such a library?

Thanks

Slackware 14.0 Installation Problems

Slackware seems to be a popular developers distro but VM Player doesn't seem to work with it. I have gone through all the steps it even does the partitions and installs the operating system completely but when I restart the virtual machine without the ISO mounted it doesn't boot the linux partition it looks for it but does not start up. Instead it returns: Operating system is missing

I'm running on a win7 x64 AMD Phenom II N620 Dual-Core Processor 2.80 GHz with 4 Gigs of RAM

The slackware distro is version 14.0 x64 edition using the kernel version 2.6 custom build from slackware called

kernel-huge-3.2.29-x86_64-1.txz(This is the actual filename from the slackware site)

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what to do to have this particular distro work properly I am all ears.

VM Player & Windows 8

I have used VM Player for a couple of years under W7 to host XP to run  Simian, an automated audio program, recently upgraded to W8 and it runs with garbled and "slow" audio. I have checked all the  usual suspects, host and XP audio drivers & reinstalled latestvVM Player and Simian but can't get it right. Other players, WMP and  Winamp, run normally. Anyone have any thoughts.

I am using Windows 7 professional and recently installed a Mercedes service manual which uses vmware player as the virtual machine.  When I start Player, the Start button in the lower left corner appeaers briefly, then disappears, and I can't get it back.  Does anyone know why this occurs and how to fix it?

Thanks.

I haver read many of the posts on this issue of UBUNTU issuing a login prompt but everything I have tried including

userid root and password = root_passord  does not work.

Supposedly during the installation it is supposed to ask the installing person for a userid and a password but that never happened under VMWare Player

Hi

Once I place Disk file on a SDXC card (64G NTFS), the performace is extermaly low. Normaly my card can has speed 40mb/s read and 80mb/write under windows 8, in VM, it almost unable to read. If I replace the card with an Class 4 SDHC card, it works as expect.

Is there any known issue with SDXC and VMPlayer 5?

using VMWare Player 5, how can I access a web server running in a VM via an external machine?

Win7 PC running Rails in an Ubuntu VM via VMWare Player. I'm working on a site and would like to show it to a friend who's outside my network.

I found this blog post, which got me very close: http://blog.fardad.com/2012/06/vmware-player-and-custom-nat-port-map.html

OK, so I have the VM that is using NAT. As I understand it, that means that the VM will appear to have the same IP address as the parent machine to outside traffic.

I went into NAT settings and added port forwarding:

Host Port: 8200 Type: UDP Virtual IP Address: 192.168.198.184:3000

OK so my understanding is that I should now be able to go to 192.168.1.1xx:8200 (the IP of my 'real' PC) and access the webserver running in the VM. But when I go to that address, I don't get anything. I can ping 192.168.198.184 (the VM) from the PC.

What I want to be able to do is go into my router and set up a port that will eventually forward into the VM.

It seems like I'm missing something very small but I don't know what that is. Help, please.

HCMON - "\Driver\asmtxhci"

I am experiencing warnings in my event viewer every time I boot my PC.

  • I have a new EVGA X79 motherboard
  • It contains the ASMedia ASM1042 chipset for USB 3.0 support
  • Running VMWare Player 4.0.3
  • Source: hcmon; Warning: Detected unrecognized USB driver "\Driver\asmtxhci"
  • Source: hcmon; Warning: Detected unrecognized USB driver "\Driver\pci"

I believe the HCMON service is from VMWare. Any suggestions how I can resolve the warnings would be greatly appreciated!

'Enter Unity' feature on Windows 7 Ultimate error.

I am using VMware player 5.0.1 on Ubuntu 12.04. I want to use the 'Enter Unity' feature, but it gives me this error:

The virtual machine cannot enter Unity mode because:

- The guest operating system does not have VMware Tools installed.
- The guest operating system's resolution cannot be changed.

When I try installing VMware tools, it stops on the 'Update of VMware Tools for Windows 2000 or later pending...' stage and doesn't get past that. And I would also like to know how to fix the 'The guest operating system's resolution cannot be changed.' error.
