Activating Windows XP after transferring into a VM

Hello,

I recently converted my old computer with Windows XP using VMware vCenter Converter into a VM. When I booted the system (in VMware of course), it asked me to activate Windows, but every time I try, it tells me that it cannot connect to the server. My network configuration is set to ''NAT'' and I have no way to verify if the problem is my VM's connection or it's problems with Microsoft server. I cannot log in without activating Windows and I don't know what to do. Please tell me what I can do.

Thank you.

(This is my first post in VMware forums and I'm sorry if i put this discussion in the wrong place)

VMWare Player 5.0.1 installation errors out on Windows 7 machine

$

Had VMWare Player 5.0.0 installed just fine. Also, I am the Administrator of my machine and have correct permissions (full control for folder and all sub folders / files) for my %TEMP% directory. Despite this, when I try to install VMWare Player 5.0.1 I get the following two errors:

First, I get:

error1.png

Then I get:

error2.png

After which I have no VMWare Player installed (the 5.0.1 installation made me remove my prior 5.0.0 install).

I tried re-running the setup using Microsofts "Did this program install correctly" dialog that lets you reinstall with the "correct" settings (assumedly some backwards compatibility setting), still no joy.

Now I am stuck with no VMWare Player, and I notice that 5.0.0 does not appear to be available for download.

Is anyone else experiencing VMWare Player 5.0.1 / Windows 7 installation errors? Has anyone encountered these specific errors?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jay

vmware player in Windows 8

I am running vmware player  5.0.1 build-894247 under Windows 8.

Hosting OS: Windows 8 64 bit, enterprise edition

Guest OS: Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

the latested VmWare tools has been installed.

From time to time in Ubuntu, the keyboard behaves wired. After some exploration, I found out it behave like the "Windows" key has been pressed and never released. Of course the "windows" key is not pressed.

The mouse is working fine. And everything else is working fine.

The only way to get out of this state is to press "Windows" Key + L, which will be intercepted by the host Windows 8 as lock computer. After unlock in Windows 8, everything returns to normal.

This can happen as often as every 10 minutes to few hours.

After I did some research, the same problem happens when run Windows Remote Desktop inside Windows 8. There is some synchronization issue which caused the RDP act as the "Windows" key has been pressed.

Does anybody else run into this situation. Is there any way to fix it?

Thanks

Hello!

I'm a system administrator in university at programming faculty. Am I allowed to install vmware player in classrooms?

http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/player40.html is too difficult to find the answer.

The main page said that it is not allowed for commercial use. Is educational purposes are the part of them?

Thank you!

Still I am getting errors which I am submitting to you as text file.

On observing the error file kindly  please suggest a solution to successfully run vmplayer on my machine.

Avoid Windows Re-Activiation

It already happened several time that windows claims some changes in HW and asks me to reactivate windows. However, I haven't changed any HW settings. Frequently VMPlayer is asking me if I moved or copied the virtual machine. Is that the reason why Windows thinks the HW changed (maybe MAC?)? How can I avoid this? Btw, I have my VM on an external HD which I use both on a desktop and my laptop. Which is the appropriate option to chose when VMPlayer asks me if I moved or copied the VM?

Problem with USB devices on Ubuntu running on VMWare 5.0.1

I have a working development environemnt on an Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS ("Linux 2.6.32-45-generic x86_64") running on WMWare Player 5.0.1. The host operating system is Windows7.

.

The problem I have is that I can't see any USB device. lsusbcommand does not list any attached device. Even the embedded web cam. All the usb devices can be seen in the removable devices list but when I try to attach them to the hosted Ubuntu I get the error: "The connection for the USB device was unsuccessful. Driver error". The driver on Windows are installed and the devices work.

I googled it and I found that maybe the problem is that VMWare player does not support USB3 yet. I did not find a way around this problem. I tried to uninstall the USB3 driver but the result was that the USB port stopped working.

How can I fix it?

Can't run Unity mode on Win7 64 bit guest

I'm unable to enter Unity mode using a Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit guest OS. The error message I receive is "Unity is not supported on this guest operating system." Is the error message correct in that the guest OS is not supported for Unity mode, or could it be something else that's wrong? The host OS is Mint 14 KDE, which is based on Ubuntu 12.10.

VMWare Player on Windows 8 Host

For some reason every time I try to install VMWare Player 5.0.1 on Windows 8 Pro Host the system will fail to boot.  The resulting stop code is 0xc000021a or essentially a Fatal System Error.  Can someone indicate why this might occur?

I have tried twice with the same result.  In both cases a System Restore to rollback the install is required to recover the system.

How to make sure guest OS is separate from Host

Have Win7 (16gb ram, 1TB HD space available) that is part of a Small Business Server 2011 domain.  I have a problem with the SBServer, and want to look at a fresh install to see what permissions certain folders have by default. (the Redirect User Folders is not working, although I've set permissions per technet article).  Network is 192.168.1.x, can I install a guest Small business Server 2011 (this one would be a trial download from MS), and make sure it is completly separate from the Host win7 and of course the existing domain. Then create one or two more guest OS on this same win7 host, and have those guest OS's join the guest Small Business Server?  If so, How do I set that up?

Thanks, Steve

No USB in Player 5.0.1, linux 3.7.3

I recently upgraded to Player 5.0.1 (894247.x86_64). The guest no longer sees any host USB devices. The Host is arch linux, kernel 3.7.3.

In the Virtual machine->Removable Devices there is no USB option at all. The Virtual Machines Setting have a USB Controller present

set with "Automatically connect new devices". I've tried USB compat 1.1 and 2.0. with no change.

I've upgraded vmtools - no change

I've tried different USB devices in the host but no sign of any host side USB in VM. Other removable devices (eg CD) work fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Clive

VMware Authorization Service (VMAuthdService) and Hardware Interrupts

$

Hi. I have VMware Player 5.0.0 build-812388 installed on a Windows 7 x64 Professional SP1 host machine (Dell Vostro 1520 notebook, Intel Core2Duo T6670, 4GB RAM).

Using Process Explorer, I've noticed medium CPU usage when it should be low, and found out that DPC/Interrupts had constant +-18%CPU spikes every +-11 seconds, each spike +-7 seconds long. I've started troubleshooting it, and when it came to stopping services, I've seen those spikes stop exactly when I've stopped VMware Authorization Service (VMAuthdService). When I started it again, spikes restarted, too. I wasn't running any virtual machines.

1) Why exactly is this service for? If I disable it, will virtual machines still run, or it's essential to run them?

2) Is there something to do to fix this behavior? I don't run VMs all the time and this useless CPU consumption degrades machine performance.

Thank you very much.

Accessing guest when host is on different network

I`m running a guest Ubuntu server 12 vm on a Windows 7 host pc.
The host computer ip is 10.0.0.1 and the guest ubuntu is configured as 192.168.21.129 (i dont want to change these ip addresses).

I`ve configured the network adapter as NAT with subnet ip of 192.168.21.0, gateway ip of 192.168.21.2, and forwarded the host`s 80 port to the vm`s 192.168.21.129:80

What do i need to do to make the vm`s webserver accessable from other computers on the lan? (Currently its accessable from the host but not from other lan computers)

Thanks

USB Not Recognized in Windows Guest

$

I'm new to VMware and I cannot get VMplayer to recognize the USB drives in my guests systems.

Host System: Windows 7 Ultimate running on Dell 15SR

Guest Systems: Windows 8 and Windows XP

Is the USB option set in the guest systems? Yes. Set to 2.0.

Is the USB Aribrtation Service started in the host system? Yes.

Does the VM have focus? Yes.

The crazy thing is that when play a VM I get a notice listing all the USB devices attached to my system and warning me that I can only have them activated in either guest or host and that listing is correct. However, these USB removable devices do not appear under Manange>Hardware nor do they appear in device manager on any other part of the VM.

When I plug in a USB device the host always grabs it.

Vmware player-what if my copy of xp is contained on a full system disc

My copy of XP is legal, but it is contained in a 3 disk installation set that came with my xp computer.  This contains xp in it somewhere, but also contains bundled software and whatever else they put on it.   How do I install the xp when Vmware player asks for the disk?

Fedora 17 3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64 kernel update & vmware player

$

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share any easy answer in case anyone was like me searching for it. Just updated fedora 17 kernel to 3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64 and it pops up with unable to find the correct kernel-headers in default location, despite have kernel-headers.x86_64 installed for the current kernel.

The missing file was the version.h header file, which I was able to correct by copying the file from the headers rpm install elsewhere via:

cp -rp /usr/src/kernels/3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h /usr/src/kernels/3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64/include/linux/

Hope this helps someone.

~Mike
