Installing and running vmware player 4.0.3 on OEL 5.8 (as host - not guest) with uek (oracle enterprise kernel)

Installation goes fine. When trying to run vmware player (#vmware-player) a window pops up asking for the kernel headers location. yum install kernel-headers from oracle public yum runs fine but still vmware player cannot detect the uek kernel headers. Can you please provide instructions on what packages to download and what steps to take?

Thank you

Player with dual nics

I am new to VMWare Player.

I installed it on my Windows 7 computer with dual NIC's.  Each NIC is on a different network.  One is an onboard NIC and the other is a D-Link NIC.  I installed Win2008 R2 and had it use the D-Link NIC.  All seemed fine then I noticed I could not connect to the Win2008 server from a different network via RDP.  Naturally I thought his was an issue with the firewall.  I disabled it and checked a few other things but can not connect to it.  Are there any limitation or issues I should be aware of?

wireless adapter does not appear

I installed vmware player 5.0.1 and now when the vmware is not running, nor did i add an existing virtual machine, i go to network and sharing center and it says no network access, connections available are vmnet1 and vmnet8. It does not show my internal wireless connection./adapter,  host OS is windows 7 and there is no guest OS yet. I can only used the wired connection, the wireless adapter does not appear. Any feedback will be great.

Unable to boot

I downloaded the Hadoop demo virtual machine from Cloudera and tried to open it with VMware Player on my 64 bit Windows 7 machine. The system has Intel i7 - 3720 QM processor with 24 GB of memory.

I am getting the following error:

"This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU"

I searched a bit and found out that it could be because the virtualization is usually disabled in the BIOS. I enabled it and cold booted the system.

I am getting the same error.

Could someone please help?

Thank you

Kernel headers for version 3.1.9-1.4-desktop were not found

Hello,

Using OpenSUSE 12.1 x64;

jason@LINUX-PD:~> cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.1.9-1.4-desktop (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.6.2 (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 27 08:55:10 UTC 2012 (efb5ff4)

I cannot run the latest greatest vmware player series >4.0 because my microprocessor is missing some features:  Release notes say Vmplayer4.0.2 must have LAHF/SAHF support.... this didnt come about in the pentium D 820.... created in 2 quarter 2005, but that support didnt get introduced by intel until 12/2005….

so I decided to use the same vmware version (VMware-Player-3.0.0-203739.x86_64.bundle) as my prior install ( I wiped a Opensuse 11.2 installation (copied the vmplayer xp image)  >  then installed a fresh new version of Opensuse 12.1)

when I try to start vmplayer  I get the following error (shortned)  "Kernel headers for version 3.1.9-1.4-desktop were not found"....

I have ensured the following:

YaST->Software->Software Management, select the 'View' tab (defaults to search). If you select patterns and scroll down the list there is a pattern called 'Base Development', and 'Linux kernel Development' select those and install

also from some posts that I have read the following are also installed:

  • libgiomm-2_4.1 (2.30.0-2.1.2)
  • glibmm2-devel (2.30.0-2.1.2)
  • linux-glibc-dev (3.1_rc5-7.1.1)
  • kernel-source
  • kernel-syms

/tmp/vmware-root/setupxxxxx.log  shows the following:

VMWare Player 3.1.6

I run CentOS 6 on 32 bit machines and hence I can't install newer  versions than VMWare Player 3 as the newer versions require a newer  processor.

Now, there is the problem with vmmon.ko and there are fixes for VMWare workstation version 6...

Are there any fixes for the Player version 3...?

Hello,

I am quite new here, sorry if this wasn't in the correct section, ther'relot of sections to be honest...

I usedvmware player for a week now, I wanted to test the new Windows 8, and wanted to see if it was great then I would use it, and I did... and it's great..

I have windows 7 at this moment running, I was thinking, is it possible to convert the Vmware windows 8 files into a dual boot?

If so, how?

Thanks

My copy of XP is legal, but it is contained in a 3 disk installation set that came with my xp computer.  This contains xp in it somewhere, but also contains bundled software and whatever else they put on it.   How do I install the xp when Vmware player asks for the disk?

Dual boot WinXP to VM?

I have a dual boot Win XP system and I would like to just boot one image and run the other as a VM. Is there a way to use the 2nd image for a VM?

I know I could build a new VM with the Win XP install CD and re-install/configure everything but I would rather not go through that.

thanks,

Eddy

Unable to connect to Homegroup from Win8 virtual machine

I just set up a new Win8 machine in VMPlayer (5.0.1 build-894247).  As far as I can tell, things seem to be okay but I cannot connect to the existing Windows 7 Homegroup.   The Network and Sharing dialog indicates that a Homegroup is available to join but after entering the group password, I get a message that says the homegroup is no longer available....but of course it's still right there.

What's up here?  And why is the access type shown as Internet rather than LAN?

Thanks.

Fedora 17 3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64 kernel update & vmware player

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share any easy answer in case anyone was like me searching for it. Just updated fedora 17 kernel to 3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64 and it pops up with unable to find the correct kernel-headers in default location, despite have kernel-headers.x86_64 installed for the current kernel.

The missing file was the version.h header file, which I was able to correct by copying the file from the headers rpm install elsewhere via:

cp -rp /usr/src/kernels/3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h /usr/src/kernels/3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64/include/linux/

Hope this helps someone.

How can I select the 1366x768 resolution for Ubuntu 12.10?

$

Running Ubuntu 12.10 on VMware Player 5.0.1 build-894247. I have installed the VMware Tools and can choose the resolution 800x600 and up to 2560x1600. So I have a fair amount of resolutions to choose from.

But my laptops native resolution, and the one that Windows 7 is running on, is 1366x768. Why can't I get that resolution in Ubuntu on VMware? Those 3 extra pixels on each side is very annoying - especially when the mouse pointer moves there and directs the input outside Ubuntu.

Is there any way to have true fullscreen?  Is this problem VMware Player or just Ubuntu who refuse to recognize the 1366 screen width?

Incorrect IP on VMNet8 of VMPlayer

I installed vmplayer and it worked properly before. For unknown reason, its ip address of VMNET8 on host changes to 168.x.x.x instead of original one, 192.168.x.1. Its DHCP works on subnet on 192.168.x.1 and assign 192.168.x.y to all client but VMNET8 adaptor on host is 168.x.x.x. As a result, all NAT connected virtual machine can't access internet throught NAT.

I tried to disable VMNET8 on host and re-enable it again, but it does not work.

I wonder if anyone can tell me how to fix it.

Hi,

I am trying to download the latest VM Player for Windows. I am looking at version VMware-player-5.0.1-894247.exe that is for "Windows 32-bit and 64-bit".

My machine is a 32-bit machine with WIndows XP SP3. When I try to install the above player, I get a message that my CPU is not supported.

I get the same error message for versions: VMware-player-5.0.0-812388.exe and VMware-player-4.0.5-893925.exe

Please help!

VMWare 3.1.6 Player mouse becomes erratic

$

I have been experiencing a problem with VMWare Player 3.1.6

This is on a Panasonic Toughbook CF53 the Host OS is Windows XPSP3 fully updated, The Guest os is Windows XPSP3 fully updated.

It seems that randomly in the guest the mouse cursor becomes  completely erratic and uncontrollable moving randomly around the screen.  The mouse while uncontrollable in the guest works fine in the host. The  only way to fix it is to reboot the guest machine numerous times as the  problem may still be there after a reboot.

I have tried:

  • reinstalling the vmware guest tools.
  • updating the hosts's machines mouse driver.
  • reinstalling the host's and guests mouse driver
  • Changeing guests hardware accelation to one from top ( this disables mouse pointer  accelaration)

None of the above works. I have been at this for days now. Anyone got  any ideas on what to try next. I cannot upgrade to the next Major  version of VMWare Player.
