Can't find the IP address of Nagios XI running in VMware Player

$

I'm running CentOS which as Nagios XI running in it, on my VMware Player. This is running on Ubuntu 12.04 (physical machine). I took a look at ifconfig on CentOS and on Ubuntu. On CentOS it doesn't give me an 'inet ipaddress' it just says 'Ethernet'. I looked at ifconfig on the Ubu machine and it says vmnet1 & vmnet8. I then looked under /etc/vmware/config and it says the 'Bridged' connection is 'vmnet0' but I can't find that anywhere else. I tried 'ifconfig vmnet0' just to see if I could force it, but it didn't work.

Is there a way of getting a actual IPaddress so I can use it to run Nagios XI's web interface? Thanks for the help.

Problem installing Windows 8 as a guest OS

Hello,

On my machine with Windows 7 (64 bits) Ultimate, I am running the VMWare Player 5. I have many VM guests with Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and they are all working fine.

Now I tried to install the Windows 8 (64 bits) trial version. I downloaded it as a ISO file.

But when tryng to make a VMWare guest with it, it does not install and I get the following error:

Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

Error code: 0xc0000001

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device) contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Anyone know this problem ?

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

André.

Inspecting and merging independent *.vmdk ?

$

Yes, I know there is a cmd like:

vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -r Mint.vmdk -t 0 minttarget.vmdk

to merge multiple *.vmdks into ONE single vmdk. BUT: This only works for a sequence of chained, associated *.vmdks like:

Mint.vmdk

Mint-s001.vmd
Mint-s002.vmdk
....
Mint-s009.vmdk

What, if there are two independent *.vmdks like

Mint.vmdk

and

foobar.vmdk

?

How can I merge them onto ONE single vmdk?

How can I find out which stuff is located on the first vmdk and which on the second?

Help me understand cpu and ram assignment

Hello, After much effort I recently built my first VM but have a few questions. After much reading I still am not clear about ram and cpu assignment with a VM. Here's what I have.

Intel dual core 2.7 ghz-8 gb ram-host is Windows 7-guest is Windows 8 Pro running in VMPlayer.

I assigned one cpu and 3 gb ram to my VM.

If I do not have VMplayer running does my host have access to both cpu's and all 8 gb of ram or does it utilize only one cpu and 5 gb of ram?

When I set up the VM I set disk size at 75 gb. Would I benefit if I reduced that?

I'm still having problems activating Windows 8 within the VM but I'll continue reading before I get into more questions about that.

Thanks.

VMWare Tool installation image is not accessible

I am trying to install Vmware tools for Debian Squeeze 64 bit on Vmware player. However, Vmware player showed this error message:

"The VMWare Toolinstallation image for this gues operating system in not accessible. If you are currently downloading VMWare Tools, please wait for the download to finish"

I don't think it is due to internet connection because I can connect to internet from guest OS.

I tried to install Vmware tool manually. However, I can't mount the cdrom by $mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom. The error message is "/dev/sr0 is unknown device".

What did I do wrong? What is solution for this?

Dual Boot Windows XP/7-64bit Issues

I have a vm that was originally a XP workstation. Now I've installed Windows 7 64-bit on a different virtual drive and when the Windows 7 OS boots, the SCSI and NIC are unknown devices. Does anyone know how I can get these devices working? I'm pretty sure it has to do with Vmware Player thinking the system is XP system and not a Windows 7 64-bit, but if anyone has a workaround it would be appreciated.

I've already tried using the drivers from a working Windows 7 64-bit vm and reinstalling the VMware Tools without success.

Recovering a V2i image into VMware Player 5.1

I've been trying to recover a Windows2003 server into a VM. Reading through the forum here I saw where someone had success with this by building a new VM and then recovering the image into it. I did that yesterday and it isn't booting. It just comes up to a black screen after the VMware boot starts. Any idea how to make this work? Is there a log file that I can check about the boot process for this VM?

The file specified is not a virtual disk: cannot open vmdk

I'm running vmware player 5.0.1 on windows 7 x64. I rebooted the host after suspending my VM, and when I try to play the VM after the reboot, I get the error message in the subject. I've attached a screencap of the error, my vmware.log, and the vmdk file it refers to. I did some looking on the knowledgebase, and it talks about using the virtual disk manager (vmware-vdiskmanager) to rebuild the vmdk file, but I don't seem to have that program. Is it only for vmware server/workstation? Can I download it somewhere? Is there an easier fix? My disk is stored in multiple files, do I have to rebuild each one?

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help...

The simplies backup ever ? - with VMware Player

Hi community,

is it possible to use VMware player in its simplies form of "backuping" like this:

1. One create virtual mashine inside directoty: VM_Win7_Folder

2. Copy and Paste the complete folder to let say Copy_VM_Win7_Folder

3. and once virtual mashine from the VM_Win7_Folder is infected or something just go and delete the complete folder

with Windows Explorer and rename back Copy_VM_Win7_Folder into VM_Win7_Folder and start VM again ?

Does it works this way too ?

Best regards,

Milan

Vmware Player 5 Win8 Guest SVGA slow, Graphics Performance 2.0

$

I have a Win8 guest running on a Win7 host.

I copied a working Win7 guest and performed an upgrade to Win8. The upgrade went fine.

However, I noticed that the graphics were sluggish/jerky as compared to the original Win7 guest.

Both VM's are using the same host machine (same hardware).

Both VM's are using the same VM settings... memory = 1G, processors = 2, Display = Autodetect

The original Win7 guest has a graphics and gaming graphics performance of6.0

     Win7 Guest SVGA Adapter info:

          VMWare Virtual SVGA 3D...

          Total Graphics 1312 MB

          Dedicated Video Memory 1280MB

          System Video Memory 0MB

          Shared System Memory 32MB

     Monitor:

          Monitor: 60Hz

          Colors: True Color (32bit)

The new Win8 guest has a graphics and gaming graphics performance of 2.0

     Win8 Guest SVGA Adapter info:

          VMWare Virtual SVGA 3D...

          Total Graphics 255 MB

          Dedicated Video Memory 0MB

          System Video Memory 0MB

          Shared System Memory 255MB

     Monitor:

          Monitor: 64Hz

          Colors: <not shown>

You can see that the Win8 SVGA adapter seems to not know about the capabilities of the graphics card.

I have uninstalled VMWare Tools (rebooted) and reinstalled them (rebooted) but this did not fix the problem.

The host has a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics card.

Are there any manual configuration options for me to try to convince the Win8 guest it has a better graphics card?

Any help would be appreciated.

Certificate Error Occurred For The Update Server (Can't Download/Install VMWare Tools)

Folks here have been so helpful thus far! Here's another problem I've run across...

When I click on the "VM" option in VMware Player 3.0, the "Install VMware Tools..." option is greyed out. When I click on the "Help --> Show Downloads" option, I see this message:

Not connected to the update server. See details for more information.
Details:

Update Server: http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds
Proxy Server: (none)
Connection Status: Disconnected - A certificate error occurred for the update server. Check your Internet settings or contact your system administrator.

Here's my setup:

Host Computer: Dell Inspiron 1318 Laptop

Host O/S: Fedora 12 Linux 64-bit (kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64)

Host Networking: WiFi (eth1) using DHCP

VMware Player Version: 3.0.0 build-203739

VMware Player Configuration: See attached Windows7.vmx.txt file

VMware Player Log: See attached vmplayer-ui.log file

Host Network & Firewall Settings: See attached network.txt file for output from ifconfig -a and iptables -L commands

I'm hoping someone else has run across this problem before and can provide a fix. In particular, what internet settings do I need to check (or modify) to get this thing working?

Thanks, in advance, for any and all assistance provided.

Regards,

Chris

Im having some issues to load a ingame inside NHL99 in VMware on win XP, so its no problem to start the game, im getting in to the menus etc.

its just when the gameplay are loading, it takes about 5 minutes at least before it loads the game, then it takes 5 minutes to exit a game also..

A 16 bit game as you can see.

http://www.gamespot.com/nhl-99-1998/reviews/nhl-99-review-2543696/

It can be sett to 800X600 resolution ingame as highest, im also matching those values on the screen resolution in windows xp.

Any ideas if there are any kind of VMware settings that can fix this loading time?.

Yes VMtools is installed, do you got any further questions?.

VM more trouble than it's worth-my nightmare experience

$

I guess the reason I am posting is I'm so pissed off I had to vent somewhere. After dual booting Win 7 and XP for several years I decided to jump into the VM world. I diligently did my homework, reading for hours (actually more like days) about the pros/cons and the different VM programs and how each worked and studying all the message boards I decided to jump in with Vmware. Please understand I'm no computer newbie and have more experience than most working out problems I encounter.

1. I wanted to convert my existing XP install to a VM. I made it lean and mean removing everything I didn't have to have. VMware touts that the VMware Converter can do this. So I install it only to find that it gives me no option of selecting a partition, only the whole drive. This makes no sense to me since a lot of people with dual boot want to convert to a VM. It also says it can convert an acronis backup to a VM. Nope, doesn't work. Further reading said that the Acronis image has to be done using Acronis 2009. I made another backup image with that. Didn't work either. So I kick VMware Converter to the wayside.

2. Installed VMWare Player which also says can convert backup images to VM-Nope, won't work.

3. Finally deciding I would have to install XP to a VM from scratch I set about doing so using VMWare Player. I have to say the setup & install was pretty easy

but when it came down to installing Vmware tools I got the error "certificate error occurred for the update server". After hours more reading I finally found one post that said to install the tools the VM should be built from VMware Workstation so here I go again. Uninstalled player and installed Workstation. Rebuilt my vm and low and behold was able to install the tools. The Vm opened nicely and worked well but then I noticed that unity mode was grayed out. Reading several hours more found no solution to this problem. I tryed changing the resolution of the guest but it made no difference. If I can't see both taskbars at the same time I'm not much better off than using a dual boot with a lot less headache.

4. I uninstalled the trial version of workstation and reinstalled vmware player. It immediately opened the VM but damned if it didn't say I needed to update tools. But how can I when it still throws out the "certificate error". Unity mode is still grayed out in player as it was in workstation.

5. So just to make sure I did everything right I started over and did the same things again to the same result. I can live with unity mode not working but if I have to keep installing/uninstalling workstation and player just to update the tools I'm spinning my wheels. This has been a "virtual nightmare".

6. Once I calm down I may try my hand at Virtualbox---but not today.

I cannot not get the Windows 8 vmware image to recognize my laptop keyboard. Tried to re-install the keyboard drivers without any success. Device manager in the VM Windows 8 shows the keyboard and touchpad devices with error code(1). I only have access to the virtual keyboard ... this will not work for me.

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

Thanks,

I am running vmplayer 5.0.1 on a kubutnu 12.10 host and xorg-edgers PPA installed. My win 7 guest refuses to turn on 3d. This worked fine with vmplayer 4.x.x. Has this been turned off in vmplayer 5.x.x?

lost eth0 when using a copied ubuntu-server vm

Hi,

I installed an ubuntu-server 6.06 as guest os and every thing is fine. But when I copy the vm to another location on disk, the guest os were not able to find the network adapter and lost its eth0. I ran ifup eth0 but got a "No such device". copy it back to the original directory then everything is ok. I tried changing default vlance to intel pro/1000 and changing NAT to bridged networking, none of them worked. WinXP or Xubuntu desktop don't have this problem. What's wrong? Vmplayer's problem or ubuntu-server's ? Host os is ubuntu-desktop 6.06
