No shared folder in /mnt/hgfs

Hello,

I've tried several tutorials to share a folder between my windows 7 host and ubuntu 12.04 guest, including the official ones and this one : http://theholmesoffice.com/2012/06/15/how-to-share-folders-between-windows-and-ubuntu-using-vmware-player/

Ubuntu is aware that there is a shared folder available with the command vmware-hgfsclient

But I just can't see it in the folder /mnt/hgfs

VMware tools is installed properly.

What is weird is that it used to work, but not anymore - I don't know what happened between, maybe an ubuntu update broke it all.

Can you help me with that?

Thx

Machine already powered on... so how do I open it?

Hello,

I've just installed VMware Player on my PC, that runs on Debian Wheezy (kernel 3.2.0-4-amd64).

I have a WindowsXP virtual machine that works fine, but sometimes the VMplayer window closes by itself. The "vmware-vmx" process is still listed as active, so the virtual machine is running, but there's no more window to interact with it. If I open (another instance of) the VMWare player again, I see the machine as "Powered on" and thus can't click on "Play virtual machine".

So far my only solution has been to kill the vmware-vmx process, but I'm sure there's a very simple way to reopen a window to the virtual machine... is there?

Thank you!

Commercial Use

VMware Player is also now available for commercial use. A commercial  license for VMware Player 5 is included with VMware Fusion 5  Professional to enable customers to  run virtual machines on Windows or Linux PCs and on Macs using a single  license key!

Do I get this right ? - to use VMplayer on Windows or Linux in a commerical context we have to buy a Fusion license ?

Sounds very strange to me - similar to going to a fruit-shop to buy an apple and getting the response: we dont sell apples - buy a banana and you will get one apple for free

Player hangs CentOS 6.2 when starting a machine

A few months ago, I downloaded the VMware Player at home because I teach at a college that uses VMware in the computer labs.  I worked fine in CentOS 6.2.

Then a few weeks ago (while the term was ending so I didn't have time to work on the problem), the Player asked me to download an update.  So, I did.  Then it said that it needed modify the kernel.  Uncomfortable as I was, the only options seemed to be let it do what it wanted or not use the Player.  So, I let it go ahead.

After that, whenver I try to start a VM, the O/S freezes.  Since the Player didn't say what it was doing, I don't know how to reconfigure the kernel to undo it (other than a fresh load of the O/S).

I tried using older versions of the Player (back to 3) without success.  I tried using an older kernel but then the Player wants to update the kernel (once bitten...) and I didn't let it do that.

I found a KB article that suggests the problem could be with the video card driver.  So, I updated the driver, rebooted a couple times and I still have the problem.

If I could, somehow (without reloading Linux), undo what the Player Update did to the kernel and/or kernel configuration, I should be able to use an older version of the Player (I think I was using 4) and I'd have a working system again.

Update 5.0.2 broke Shared Folders

I have been using vmplayer happily with Mint 14 32bit Cinnamon for a while now, but the update to 5.0.2 has broken Shared Folders (and other things). I uninstalled 5.0.2 and downloaded the latest, got a newer build number 5.0.2 build-1031769 now, same problem.

I have just upgraded player to the latest version and my security software blocked the install of funwebproducts.

Is this a false positive or is VmWare now bundling rubbish with its products?

Assigning public IPs to VMs

$

Hey!

I'm thinking of renting a dedicated server with win7pro today. I plan on installing VMware player and adding two virtual machines with win 7 on the dedicated server. I will buy a total of 3 public IP adresses aswell.

Let's say I get these 3 public IP addresses from the provider:

66.77.88.99

66.77.88.100

66.77.88.101

Im wondering if it will work to assign 1 PUBLIC IP address to each server like this:

Main Dedicated Server: 66.77.88.99

Virtual server 1: 66.77.88.100

Virtual server 2: 66.77.88.101

And make these servers accessable from the internet. I'll host one gameserver on each server which ppl have to be able to join with individual IPs.

is this as easy as it sounds? Or is there any problems that might occur which I dont know about.

Anyway to auto assign keyboard/mouse at VM start up?

So just like the title says, I just was wondering if VMplayer supports the ability for you to assign a specific mouse/keyboard that it will default too automatically as soon as the VM boots up? If so could someone please tell me where to go to find the options for that as I am currently scouring the internet for any information. Cheers!

Hi there,

I'm getting a notification to upgrade my free VM ware player 5.0 (running on Win7) to 5.01. When I start the upgrade, it asks me to first uninstall the current version. My fear is whether my existing VM will be usable after I uninstall 5.0 & install 5.02. Does the uninstall & install preserve the VMs ?

Thanks

Vmware Player freezing?

$

I just put server 2008 on it and changed the name for the computer.  Once down I had to restart the os on VMware, it loaded up about half of the way and stopped, I could still move the mouse around on my normal machine but once clicked on something it caused that to freeze up too.  The only way to fix this was to restart the computer.  After I put DNS on the server and tried to restart the same thing along with AD DS.  Any idea on what is causing VMware to freeze and my machine it self slow down and have other programs on it freeze to on a VMware os reboot?

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone is not working

Hello,

i tried to create a virtual machine of my PC and got the following error message:

FAILED: Erstellen eines VSS-Snapshots des/der Quellvolumes nicht möglich. Fehlercode: 127 (0x0000007F).

What would be in english: The creation of a VSS-Snapshot of the Source-Volumes not possible...

2 days ago it worked fine? Does this have something to do with Truecrypt or acronis installed on the machine? (By the way Win7 64 bit installed latest versions of Vmplaywer and Converter couple weeks ago)..

Greetings!

It's that simple. I'm clicking the shortcut and nothing happens.

I've reinstalled it several times but with no success.

OS: Windows 7

Player: VMware-player-5.0.2-1031769

It worked last year but then I didn't use it for some time and now it don't start.

My guess is it's a vcredist incompatibility issue. I remember that I uninstalled some of unused ones from my system, but I left the freshest ones. And it seems to me (maybe I'm wrong) that the ones shipped with Player don't get installed anymore, as there are more recent versions, but Player is incompatible with them.

I have the following vcredists now:

Hi all,

I run into a weird issue. just bought a ASUA S550CM ultrabook, Core i7, win8 64bit, touch screen. Installed VM player 5.0.1 on it and Win7pro guest. everything worked fine. Found an issue with the laptop and exchanged it. when I duplciated the same installation of vm player in the new machine, Network Bridge does notwork any more and got confict IP message, NAT works good though. I reinstalled vmplayer, Win7 guest, reboot router,,,almost everything I could think of to reset. There is another one vmplayer (4.0.4) running in XP host on the same wireless LAN, NAT/Bridge is good in win 7 guest though. Below is the ipconfig from Win8 host and Win 7 Pro guest.

Thanks in advance!

Can't uninstall VMware because I installed Hyper V

$

I upgraded to Windows 8. My VMware installation worked after that. But then I installed Hyper V and some software that I don't want to uninstall. Today I went into vmware again and it tells me that it is not compatible with Hyper V. So I tried uninstalling, but it won't even let me do that. How do I get rid of it?

I can't uninstall Hyper V because of an installation there that I depend on and don't want to reinstall. Is it safe to try a manual uninstall?

will Win9 run

Hello,

I'm planning to buy a new desktop and Laptop - with win7 64bit installed on both. The idea is create a VM of my desktop before i go on a trip and run this VM on my laptop. I'm planning to use both hardware for at least 4 years.

Since i want to use the hardware for 4 years i'm now wondering how smooth it would go, when at some day in the future i install win9 on my DESKTOP but on the Notebook it would still be win7. The question is now: Would there be problems to expect when an older version of vmwareplayer (as speaking of today version 5) for win7 should run a new OS.

I'm asking this because when Win8 came out (as far as i remember) in the beginning it didn't run in Vmwareplayer. I understand that there probably will be updates, but win7 by this time will be quite "old" (version before win8 then) so will there be updates even for win7?

Could someone with some experience could give me an educated guess about this? How was this handled in the past?

Greetings!

Connecting to A Virtual Machine

Hi everyone,

I sure hope you all can help me out, as I am completely stumped on this one.  Let me first give you my situation (setup, etc) and hopefully I'll be able to work through this.

I have my laptop, which is running Windows 7 Professional x64.  On that laptop, I have VMWare Player version 5.0.2, which has Windows 7 Ultimate x86.  On this Windows 7 Virtual Machine, I have installed PHP, Apache, and MySQL in order to run a personal wiki site that I have created.  On the VM, I am able to navigate through the wiki with no problem (by going to the internet browser and typing in http://localhost/tiki), and it works as it should.  What I am trying to do is be able to access said wiki site outside of the VM (i.e. from my laptop browser), or another computer like my desktop PC.  I am familiar with the Virtual Network Editor and networking in general.

I have tried going through to process of setting up an NAT setup from online documentation, but nothing that I have tried works.  I am able to ping the VM using the IP address I have found for VMNet1, but I cannot ping the VM using the VMNet8 for NAT.  Is there something that I am doing wrong?  Any help is appreciated, thanks.

How to lock down VM Player

Hi experts,

I am exploring some ideas on how to allow secured internet browsing in a lock down workstation running Windows OS.  A good option would be to run VMPlayer and run Browser Appliance on top of it.  However, I don't want to give the users the option to "play around" with the VMWare Player - create their own VMs, try to open a different VM, Upgrade to VMWare Workstation or even access the Help section.  I can avoid displaying the main VMWare Player window by modifying the shortcut target and specifying the path to the the vmx file.

Old target:

"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Player\vmplayer.exe"

Modify to:

"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Player\vmplayer.exe" "C:\patch\to\appliance\file\Browser-Appliance.vmx"

Clicking on the shortcut will launch the player and the browser appliance directly.  However, I noticed that the menu options are visible in the player window.

VMPlayer Toolbar.JPG

Is there anyway to hide the VMWare Player toolbar (enclosed in the red box in the image above) ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

I just joined the forums.I use VMware Player and yesterday after suspending the image that  I was working on, I put the pc to shutdown.

Today when  I tried to run the image through VMware Player. it gave the error shown in the image above.

The image was supposed to be around 24GB in size but now its folder is showing only 6 GB as size. I really need the data inside it .

Can anyone help me recover the image?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
