VMs corrupted after upgrade to 5.0.2

$

I upgraded to Player 5.0.2 from 5.0.1 last night and now neither of the VMs that I upgraded vmware tools in will boot any longer.  I get a NOT_IMPLEMENTED message.

I did some searching online and have tried to use vdiskmanager to repair the disk, load it into another VM, etc. Nothing seems to work.

This is on a Windows 7 x64 Pro host.  I have another virtual machine that i did not have suspended, and have not upgraded tools in that still boots fine in both 5.0.2, which I uninstalled and 5.0.1 which I have back on there now.

Here is the snippet from the log:

Viewing VM Settings Causes Player to Freeze Up

$

I created a WIn98 VM in Player 3, at the suggetion of a forum member when I was having difficulties with a VM in the current version. Switching to 3 didn't seem to have solved any of the issues I was having. I decided to take a different route from cloning an existing machine to just intalling win98se on a fresh VM. It all worked, but I would rather be using the current version of Player, so I upgraded to the current version. The VM that I created in Player 3 still runs fine, but I cannot change any settings on the VM. When I attempt to view the vm settings, the settings window opens, and then the program freezes completely and the only option is an end-task. Other VMs that I created in Player 3 I can run and edit their settigns no problem, the program only freezes when I attempt to view the settings for this one particular VM.

Any ideas?

Suspend Guest button disabled in Player 5.0.1

Hi,

I recently upgraded player 4 to 5.0.1 build-894247

and I cannot suspend any of my VMs anymore.

I have several Windows and Linux VMs, some with Tools,

but most without,

and all of them used to suspend OK in the old player,

but the new player has all "Suspend Guest" buttons and menu items

disabled (grayed out). Only Shutdown Guest and Restart Guest are available.

Why is that?

Thank you

Player on RHEL/CentOS 5 - No network

I am trying to use VMWare Player on either Red Hat Enterprise 5 or CentOS 5.

The application installs without problem, but any VM I try to use cannot get a network connection.

Tried NAT and Bridge both withthe same unconnecting result.

Found the trick for getting at the network config for Player and that was no help.

Even tried uninstalling Player 5 and re-installing Player 4 becaue I swear I had it working at some point in the past.

BIOS Issue?

I've spent the last week trying to get a cloned win98se PC->VM to work.

While I can get it to boot in safe mode, I cannot get it to boot normally unless I remove some drivers, namely those that are related to the harddrive and cdrom.

I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what the issue is.

If i install a fresh windows 98 se into a VM it works fine. Comparing the fresh install to the cloned vm, I can see some differences. One of the differences is in the BIOS it shows Primary Master as [VMWare Virtual IDE Hard-(PM)] and Primary Slave as [VMWare Virtual IDE CDROM-(PM)].

However, in the cloned VM, in the BIOS it shows Primary Master as [VMWare Virtual IDE Hard-(PM)], and Secondary Master as [VMWare Virtual IDE CDROM-(PM)], but Primary and Secondary Slave as [NONE].

So in other words, in the fresh install, the hard drive is seen as Primary Master, and the CDROM is seen as Primary Slave, but in the cloned VM, it thinks the CDROM is the secondary master instead of the primary slave. These are on the same host machine, so I don't understand why there would be any difference at all.

I'm wondering if this little difference is behind (some of) the issues I am having with the cloned VM?

Getting past the BIOS, if I get the cloned VM to boot in safe mode, under device manager->Hard Disk Controllers I have:

PCI Bus Master Controller

Primary Ultra ATA Controller

Secondary Ultra ATA Controller

But in the fresh install, I have something different:

PCI Bus Master Controller (Same)

Primary IDE Controller

Secondary IDE Controller

What would lead to these differences? Is there some setting that is causing the cloned VM to think it has different hardware or configuration than the fresh install?

VMWare Tools Install Crash/Freeze

$

I have a win98se VM. When I attempt to install the VMWare tools it goes all the way through the installer, then a message pops up stating that the gues is trying to eject the CD, and do I want to let it. I click yes, then another message comes up asking me to reboot. But I can't click this second dialog. The mouse stops working at this point, so I can't click anything and have no cursor on the screen. Keyboard doesn't work either. So I can't do anything at all except for forcefully reboot the VM. When the VM resumes, the tools are not installed.

So I run through it again, and this time i customize it and say not to install the mouse component. This works, I am able to reboot, and all is well. However, the mouse is still all herky jerky, and so I'd really like to get the full toolset installed, but all efforts to achieve that have failed thus far.

Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Two Network Adapters = Player Crash

If I setup a Virtual Machine with two network adapters, one set to bridged and another set to NAT, I can no longer access the settings page for the VM without crashing Player.

I had this setup working fine in Player version 3, but when I upgraded to version 5.x I get this bug.

    • Vmware Tools is NOT installed, for space reasons.

    • NO FIREWALL rules

    • NO GUI

o  Bridged networking is used by default, and the VM is expecting to  grab a  DHCP address on bootup.  IPV6 support has again been left  Enabled in this release.

(Static MAC address assigned in VMX file - should Just Work anywhere)

+ This can be changed by editing " /etc/network/interfaces " and then issuing ' /etc/init.d/networking restart '.

    • Note, this is a TESTING release - PLEASE let me know if there are any bugs!

    • I have finally been able to test Logfile rotation on ESXi - works Ok out of the box

    • IMPORTANT   NOTE: When powering on the VM, tell Vmware you MOVED IT - not Copied  it  -- this may eliminate the hassle that some users have been seeing   with " NIC creep ", where eth0 migrates to eth1 ;-)

      • DISCLAIMER *** - Run at your own risk, default build only includes SSH ( port 22 ) and Squid ( 10.0.244.250, port 3128 )

      • Not Responsible if this Virtual Appliance wows your ponycatbirdlizardbisongoldfish, and makes it run around in excitement! ***

Features:

Alt-F5: Bandwidth monitor, updates every (5) sec ( Increased from V4 to save CPU interrupts )

Alt-F9: " Top " display, slightly customized

* Easter egg(s) and some minor speed tweaks and fixes

--Suggested additional software: (' apt-get update; apt-get install pkgname ')

o webmin -- For system configuration (Browser-based config: https://10.0.244.250:10000 )

o webmin-squid

o calamaris -- Log analyzer

o sarg -- Squid analysis report generator

o webmin-sarg

o srg -- Detailed log analysis for squid

o squid-cgi -- Cache manager interface

==============================

Quick instructions (HOWTO):

- Fire up the VM

- Hit Alt-F5 and you can watch the bandwidth monitor

Hit Alt+F1, LOGIN AS root and ** CHANGE THE PASSWORDS!! 1st thing **

Client-side instructions:

- Set ALL of your browser's Cache setting really low, like to 5-8 MB - and Delete it!  Huge disk space savings!

-  Point your browser's Proxy setting to the VM's IP address ( default  10.0.244.250 , port 3128 ) - you can point it to the DHCP address for  fast/temporary testing (issue ' ifconfig ' at the root or User prompt to  see the squid VM's DHCP IP address) or change it to whatever matches  your home network. I put it as a Class A address by default so it  matches my home setup and ((hopefully)) shouldn't interfere with other  setups.

--Note  that this is a security feature as well.  I have my home net setup as a  Class A with all-static IPs, and everybody (browsers, Win updates, and apt-get) talks  to Squid.  Squid is usually the only box that has a DHCP address from  the router so it can talk to the Internet.

--  Now here's the neat thing - multiple PCs on your network can have  *multiple browsers* - Firefox, Chrome, Opera, IE, Safari, Lynx, etc all  pointing to the Squid proxy, and it will cache and filter ( ad- and some  porn-sites, user definable ) requests for *everybody.*

--  You know how AdBlock Plus works in Firefox?  Squid does something very  similar, only it does it for ANY browser.  Somebody loads the Yahoo  website? Well now you'll get it to load -faster- for you because it will  be pulled from the Squid cache.  Virus updates, ad-aware, apt-get and  Windows updates should also be faster because they won't have to be  downloaded from the Web multiple times.  ( And yes, pretty much all of  my physical PCs, laptops, and VMs go through my Squid proxy - I'm  "eating my own dog food" here. )

- ACL / file extension filtering:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/squid-content-filter-block-files/

--  There are a *LOT* of config file options; I've done the heavy lifting  and marked up /etc/squid.conf with " xxx " marks wherever things have  been changed, and it should Just Work out of the box.  The maximum  filesize that will get stored in-cache is 20MB, set by me.  If you're a  tweaker though, you can set it up to pretty much store and filter  whatever you want. ( Hint: as root, edit the following in /etc/squid3:  adsblock.txt, porn.txt, notporn.txt -- and then issue ' squiderr ' )

NOTE: For this release, the /etc/squid3/squid.conf file has been drastically reduced in size (most of the in-file documentation is gone) but you can still search for "xxx" and especially "EDIT ME" strings for important values that may need to be changed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For this release, Squid is using the "network lockdown" settings - so it may not work "out of the box" like previous versions did.  Edit /etc/squid3/squid.conf and change the network ACLs to match your setup, then issue ' squiderr '.

--  If you are really anticipating a lot of usage, you should go ahead and  bump up the settings - give the VM 256 MB RAM or more, change /etc/squid3/squid.conf for extra memory and cache space.  You may also need to possibly  tweak some other settings.  Repeat as needed - you can always replace  the 2nd vdisk with a bigger one, or add more disks.

NOTE: ' squid  -kshutdown; sleep 30; squid -z; squid ' will activate the extra disk  space once you are done editing the config file.

-->  Look in /etc/squid3 dir for ad-blocking settings, and don't forget to '  squid -kreconfigure ' ( or ' squiderr ' ) if you change things...

--  Note for people who like SANE text editors, that don't remind you of  EDLIN - I've included Joe (' jstar ', for those of us who actually miss  WordStar), and Midnight Commander, which comes with ' mcedit ' -- you're  NOT limited to VI !!!  The nano editor is installed as well, if you're used to it.

Have fun...

/ Post bug reports - If I don't hear anything for (2) weeks, consider it a full release!

----------------------------

--Things to do every so often to keep the appliance up to date:

o It's a good idea to login as " root " once a month or so and run the ' updt ' script.  This will update installed packages and apply security updates.

Running ' updt ' will also sync up the VM's time/date.

o Check your logs with ' mc /var/log ' and then use F3 to view the log files

o Check free disk space with ' df -h '

o Check RAM free and swapfile usage with ' free '

- Hit Alt-F9 and you can see your uptime with the running " top " virtual console

--I  have had uptimes in excess of 100 days easily with Squid V6 running on  ESXi; you just power it on, and it should pretty much take care of  itself.    However, make sure you limit Squid's memory so the OOM-killer doesn't get you.

./. If you have appreciated my response, please remember to apply Helpful/Correct points. TIA

* Note: This VM was built and customized from the following JEOS skeleton appliance - my thanks to the developers:

I an running openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 with kernel 3.8.1 and I installed VMplayer 5.0.2 64 bit version.

When I launch vmplayer, it comes up and show me the list of VMs I have. However, when I try to *start* a VM, my KDE session is reset and

restarted, and I am logged out and faced with a KDE login screen.

I experienced a similar problem with openSUSE 12.1 or 12.2 and VMplayer 5.0.0 and back then it was a problem with KVM incompatibility and once

I uninstalled KVM my VMplayer worked fine. I do not have KVM installed now so I do not know what new issue is causing this problem.

Thanks.

I am running player on a win 7 laptop with XP running as guest.

The XP guest will not recognize the onboard sound card and the device manager says there is a Creative card in there.  The DM on the Win7 side says it's a Realtec.

A USB sound card is recognized and works but it's a bit inconvenient.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

using VMWare Player 5, how can I access a web server running in a VM via an external machine?

Win7 PC running Rails in an Ubuntu VM via VMWare Player. I'm working on a site and would like to show it to a friend who's outside my network.

I found this blog post, which got me very close: http://blog.fardad.com/2012/06/vmware-player-and-custom-nat-port-map.html

OK, so I have the VM that is using NAT. As I understand it, that means that the VM will appear to have the same IP address as the parent machine to outside traffic.

I went into NAT settings and added port forwarding:

Host Port: 8200 Type: UDP Virtual IP Address: 192.168.198.184:3000

OK so my understanding is that I should now be able to go to 192.168.1.1xx:8200 (the IP of my 'real' PC) and access the webserver running in the VM. But when I go to that address, I don't get anything. I can ping 192.168.198.184 (the VM) from the PC.

What I want to be able to do is go into my router and set up a port that will eventually forward into the VM.

It seems like I'm missing something very small but I don't know what that is. Help, please.

How to I navigate to a virtual XP folder from my regular Windows 7 desktop?

I followed your instructions and was able to install a virtual xp on my windows 7 computer.   The reason I did it was because I have a scanner I like that is xp only, and I wanted to use it here at my desk.  It works great.

When I scan a photo from the virtual xp, the scanned photos are put in the “virtual” C drive.  From my virtual xp I just look under  c:/my photos  and there they are.  However, I have not figured out how to navigate to this folder from my regular windows 7.  So, for example, if I want to email one of the photos I have scanned, I have to copy it from the virtual xp window, then paste it to the regular windows 7 desktop.  I know these photos are in the computer somewhere.  How can I navigate to them from my Windows 7.  The way it is now I have to have every photo on my computer twice.

Virtual Machine Settings Window Freezes With Multiple NICs

$

I have VMware Player 5.0.2 installed on a Windows XP SP3 host and any time I attempt to view the virtual machine settings on a VM that has multiple NICs installed on it the settings window freezes and forces me to crash VMware Player.

The type of NIC (NAT, host-only, LAN segment, etc.) doesn't seem to matter.  As long as there's no more than one NIC of any type everything works fine.  But as soon as I add a second NIC of any type and save the changes, then the next time I try to view the virtual machine settings the settings screen locks up and I have to go in and manually edit the machines .vmx file in order to make any changes.

Is this a known issue?  Can anyone else confirm they're having this issue?

VMware Player and Windows Virtual PC

Greetings,

I have been using Widnows Virtual PC with Windows XP Mode on both my Windows 7 Ultimate PC's.  I am interested in importing my Windows XP Mode VM's into VMplayer and comparing features and performance between the two.  To this end I have a few questions:

1. I already have Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode installed.  Can I install VMplayer, import the Windows XP Mode VM, and still use the Windows XP Mode VM in Windows Virtual PC afterwards?  (Not concurrently of course, but one at a time to run some performance tests.)

2. If I chose to go solely to VMplayer afterwards, can I safely uninstall WIndows Virual PC without affecting my Windows XP Mode installation?

Thanks in Advance!

Cheers,

Issue with VMPlayer Virtual Machine after unexpected restart

$

Hello!
I have been enjoying the use of virtual machines for a few months now but have had a nagging problem that's building on me and I need to resolve...

I have a Virtual Machine that at first would run very well, but after an unexpected restart it will work well for 30 seconds to 1 min and then freeze (Mouse still moves, but cannot click on anything, cursor stops blinking etc) for about 10 seconds after which everything speeds up for a couple seconds (Cursor blinks rapidly, firefox loading icon spins quickly etc)

I have tried nearly everything I can think of to fix this, as well as searching google/fourms for a solution but have come up empty handed.

I have already tried:

- Syncing Time
- Reinstalling VMPlayer

- Reformatting and reinstalling host system
- Creating new Virtual Machine (This worked in combination with the reformat above - but worth noting that reformatting the host system, which of course includes reinstalling VMPlayer did NOT fix the old VM)

- Switching from a Windows 7 VM to Windows XP (I thought that worked, but after the recent unexpected restart now the XP VM is doing it as well)

However, I just put alot of effort into installing the software and such on the VM and do not want to recreate it.

Does anything have any ideas? Anything would much appreciated!

Can anybody duplicate this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=311974 (current daily build of Kubuntu 13.04 and current VMWare Player and Tools)?

I am running a Daily Kubuntu 13.04 build in VMWare Player. On Kubuntu 12.10, with KDE SC 4.9, I normally set the panel to autohide and mouse to the bottom to reveal it. Since the early RCs of KDE SC 4.10, only Alt F1 reveals it.

Hello everyone,

I'm using Vmwareplayer 5 on a win7 64-bit machine. Could someone now explain in detail (step-by-step would be the best since i'm a real newbie on this) how to:

  1. Gather the UUID Number from an existing VM
  2. how can i change this number to a number of an existing vm.

Or in other words: I want to create a NEW vm of my my computer, but it should get the UUID of an Old Vm i used months ago.

Thx!
