Windows key in Unity view?

$

I'm running win8 as my host with a win7 guest in Unity View. Whenever I hit my windows key (even if I'm focused on a window on the guest system), it only operates for the host. Is there a way to push the windows key to the guest while using Unity view?

Unnecessary vertical scroll bar if host screen height is large enough

Enhancement bug report

Description

When the width of screen resolution of guest OS is larger than host, but height of screen resolution of guest OS is smaller than host, VMware Player will display horizontal scroll bar (of course), but also display the vertical scroll bar which is unnecessary. See the screenshot below. 2013-04-08 10:44:24的屏幕截图 edited.png

So each time I started VM, I need manually drag the bottom border of VMware Player to let the VM been displayed in full height. It's a little bit annoying.

Problem Maintaing High Resolution in Windows 8 Guests

My host system is Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, running on a Dell Vostro 460 Tower with an AMD Radeon HD 6670 video display adapter.  I currently have 2 VMPlayer guests (version: 5.0.2 build-1031769) running Windows 8 Professional. Overall, everything seems to be running fairly smoothly and reliably.  Other than running the VM's, the host system is connected to the TV as a 2nd monitor and runs services like Hulu and Netflix.  The VM's will be used as personal desktops for me and my partner. It's possible that an additional VM will be added later running Ubuntu, but that's down the road.  The computer has 12G of memory. Each VM is currently allocated 4G.

Here's the problem:

The display resolution for the host is 1366 x 768. Each VM defaults to 1350 x 656.  Frequently when I try to open applications inside the VM's, I get an error message stating that the resolution is too low. So I change the resolution to 1366 x 768, and everything seems to work fine. Later, I receive the same message again and when I check, the resolution has changed back to 1350 x 656. I can change it back to the higher resolution, go in periodicallyand check it and it is still at the higher resolution.  Then suddenly I check it and it's dropped back to the lower resolution.

The connection to the regular monitor is VGA and to the TV it is HDMI. I tried swapping the 2nd monitor back and forth, and the VM resolution remains at the higher resolution, so the problem does not appear to be caused by that.

Anyone have an idea why the Windows 8 resolutions automatically (and seemingly randomly) switch back to the lower resolution?

I really don't understand the interactions between the VM display adapters and the hardware adapter in the computer, but would like to. And I'm willing to do most anything to obtain the highest resolution possible in all environments, as long as I can create stables environments.

Very high and persistent disk usage after closing down VMPlayer.

Ive noticed that after i close a virtual machine running on my pc the disk usage goes through the roof for about 5 minutes and then returns to normal.

VmWare player seems to be doing alot of work in the background even after the player has closed.

This excessive disk usage by the vmware player and services causes all other running programs to run very slow as it cant get access to the disk for an extended period of time.

Is this normal for Vmware player. The same issue was present on player 4 and 5.

My PC spec is decent enough.

Network connection on VMware-player 5.0.2 - build 1031769

Hi

One of our work stations is end of life hardware-wise (runs WinPro 7 32 bit which is fine) but rather than giving my operative a new box to learn I've picked up VM player (VMware-player 5.0.2 - build 10317690 and converter.

Then I've found a new box, (an IBM laptop - X61 running W7 Ultimate with wifi and in a docking station) loaded up a spare Windows 7 licence, loaded  player, run converter on the old box and can now "play" the old box as a VM  on the new box.  VMware tools version 9 is installed.

However, while the new box has internet access (wired in our Windows domain) the old box in the player does not.

The new box shows three connections in /network connections - the LAN connection and to VMware "virtual Ethernet adaptors" - the latter two are set to DHCP - one for wireless and one wired I assume - the new box is a laptop in a docking station.

The old box VM has a bridged connection in VM setting with replicate physical network settings ticked and the wired adaptor showing ticked  in the configure adaptors box

The Windows 7 the VM does not connect to the network or the internet.

I've found http://communities.vmware.com/message/321617 which suggests running <vmnetcfg>

But I cannot find a copy of vmnetcfg that works here!

All help welcome

No option to create a new virtual

I have downloaded VMWare Player version 5.0.2 and installed on a Windows 8 PC. It does not give me the option to "Create a new virtual". I have never used this product and I would like to use Windows XP to run a legacy application.

My only options are "Open" or "Download".

Any suggestions on how to create a new virtual is appreciated.

Hi,

I am after some help.  I purchased a copy of snow leopard from apple so this is a legitimate copy. I have an intel i7 3770k processor 16gb ram. I am wanting to try and install snow leopard on my machine Iona virtual environment. So far it is telling me that i am unable to install a 64 bit operating system. I have WO dows 7 working beautifully and this is a 32 bit operating system. The main OS is windows 8 and this is 64 bit.

If anybody has any guides on how to install snow leopard without having to go and get a dodgy copy from a torrent I would be very grateful. Has anybody done this so far?

Pthanks

Multiple VM's, one physical NIC, VLANs with different NICs?

$

Hows it going? I'm a student in Ireland trying to get advice for a project I am trying to accomplish in the Cloud Computing course I am doing. Im fairly new to this these are my first VMs and I am using VMPlayer 5. Basically what I have so far is two VMs set up on one machine. What I would like to do is have each VM on the first machine in its own VLAN so that they can't communicate with each other without going through a virtual router/switch which I would like to set up on another machine. The thing is I only have one network card on the machine with two VMs so can only bridge with one of them at the minute. I can't find anything concrete online about whither it's possible to somehow enable virtual instances of a NIC so that each VM on the first machine is in it's own VLAN which can each communicate with another machine behaving as a router/switch. Would GNS3 for virtual routing and Microsoft Loopback Adapter for multiple NICs on one pNIC be the way to go or am I heading down a rabbit hole? All i'm looking for is a nudge in the right direction it all seems a bit overwhelming at the minute. Cheers!

Creating and consolidating Snapshot only possible with Workstation (not with Player)?

As far as I can see creating and consolidating a Snapshot is only possible with VmWare Workstation and NOT with VmWare Player.

Is this correct?

Can not install XP SP1

Hi,

I just started my very first foray into virtulisation and have hit a problem.

I have installed VM Player on my Windows 8 system.

When I try to install XP the install appears to be going normally, installing all the drivers etc then when it gets to

Setup is loading files (IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller) ...

there is a massive amount of hard disk activity and a very long pause until I eventually get the message:

File aha154x.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) at line 3529 in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c.

Press any key to continue.

When I press a key i'm informed that the setup has failed and told to press any key to restart the system.

I'm at a loss as where to start as there doesn't appear to be any information regarding this problem anywhere.

Can't ping guest from Win7 host using NAT in Player 5 -- wrong IP address on VMnet8?

$

The guest gets a sane-looking IP address from vmware's DHCP server (192.168.47.47.130) and can talk to the host and to the Internet but I can't ping or telnet the guest from the Windows host.  I suspect this has something to do with the fact that my VMnet adapters have "autoconfiguration addresses" (169.245.*.*) instead of addresses on the same subnet as the guest, but I have no idea why.  Strangely enough, Windows reports a correct-looking address in the "Properties" dialog but not in the "Status" dialog:

Change resolution in MS-DOS

Hey guys,

i was just getting my VM with MSDOS started when I recognized that the resolution of the DOS Window was kinda small. I was trying to change it by using a manual resolution in the VM-Players options but it didnt change anything... The window still is only like a quarter of what it should be. Since im trying to get this DOS working for my father it should be readable for him Now my question is: What am i doing wrong? How can i get the DOS into full screen (1280x1024) so it wont take only a quarter of my screen but the full?

My host is Win7 64-Bit if this might help you...

I added a picture so you can see what i mean cause i think my english isnt that good

Only the First guest OS I boot up can see the network

$

Hello everyone,

At work we currently work exclusively out of VMs. Usually we have more than one VM open at a time, but we always boot up and shut down multiple VMs everyone day. We are using VmWare player 4.0.4 and I know that is old but we cannot use anything newer. All of the VMs are set up to connect to the network with NAT. Now, the problem I am having is that only the first VM I boot up everyday can see the network. After that I have to reboot my computer in order to get a different VM to see the network. The weird thing is that they can all get to the internet through the network, but cannot access any of the network drives. None of my co-workers seem to be having the problem so I must have changed a setting on my computer or something. Has anyone run into this problem before or have any solutions? Here are some specifics on my setup.

Host: Windows 7 64-bit

Guests: Either Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 32-bit

Network: Set to NAT, cannot get any more specific information from VmWare player.

I have tried disabling the VmNet adapter on both the guests and the hosts.

I have reinstalled VmWare player multiple times and removed all the config files between installs.

I have tried using ipconfig on guest OS.

I looked in the knowledge base on VmWare and tried everything they recommended but nothing seems to be working.

Hi everybody,

I've installed VMware Player the first time in my life. I'm not able to start the Windows VMware Player 64 bit. I tried varies Versions (5.02/01/00) and every version results in the same error message:

VMware Player unrecoverable error: (vmplayer) NOT_IMPLEMENTED

d:/build/ob/bora-812388/bora/lib/pollDefault/pollDefaualt.c:1358

A log file is available...

Does anybody know, how can I solve this problem?

Thank you very much!

Network-Access-Problems

Hello,

I set up a VM with W7 64bit on my PC with Windows 8. My W8-PC is connected to some networkdrives on a nas.

Now I want to access from my VM on the same NAS but with other userdata. So I'm able to enter the other userdata, when I try to connect from my VM to the NAS.

But now I also have access from the vm to the shares, where only the Windows8 machine should have access to.

Is there something wrong on the settings of my VM?

Cannot Copy VMDK file

I am currently attempting to copy my XP VM to another PC.  Everytime I attempt to copy the file, I get a disk I/O error and the source Drive becomes unmounted.  I have to restart my PC in order to see the drive again.  I have run a chkdsk and other disk utilities on the file and they all come back with no errors.  The VM I'm attempting to copy operates fine.  There are no errors when I'm running it.  Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to get this file copied?

No ethernet in vmware 5 with Linux 3.6

Hi there

I am struggling to figure out why there is no eth% device when running Linux 3.6 in vmware player version 5 ?

I've have compiled vmxnet support into the kernel and the boot up messages says it's loading all the right modules but it always seems to timeout when it comes to initializing the eth device. The kernel message is:

eth%d: i82596 initialization timed out

Has anybody any knowledge of what could be happening here ?

VMDK file cannot be opened or unlocked

$

I've been running a Windows XP professional virtual machine for a few weeks now, and until today it's gone well. But today, when I started it up, the machine informed me that the VDMK file "cannot be opened or unlocked." I'd attribute it to an newly installed program, but I haven't installed anything on the system other than what I did on the first day. Anyone know how to fix this?

Is it possible to resize a virtual disk in VMware player 4.0.1?
