Running two VMs on a same PC networking

Hi All:

I'm running two SUSE Linux Virtual Machines (VM)  with VMPlayer on a PC with Windows server 2008. Both virtual machines are configured to bridge to the same host physical ethernet port (bridge mode). The first VM started can access the network without any problem but the second VM started not. The order VM starting was switched to test if it was a misconfiguration on one of the VM, but as stated the VM that is started first seems to take ownership of the VMnet0 switch and block acces to the second started VM. The LANs defined for each VM are different: 10.2.1.0/24 for one VM and 10.4.1.0/24 for the other.

Any help will be sincerely appreciated

VMware player unstable, is cause ifself or hardware?

VMware(player) is really a fascinating software, thanks to its developers.

When I use VMware player and full version, I find player seems more unstable than full version does. VMware Player may cause the PC hang, autoboot or bluescreen before it,  and fuzzy screen, then the real XP system starts to autoreboot after a few times of malfunction of the virtual system. I think the virtual system's breakdown may have destoryed C drive's partition table of the real one, which seems not able to be fixed by its own disk check. Fortunately, I have a PE disc that helps me to maintain the real system and I have backed up the intact C drive to a ghost image which can be easily restored to C drive.

Each time when I use vmware full version to watch video, the vido player is black screened after a few glints, which I think is a protective mean for hardware like display card, while VMware player never displays black screen.

Could you give a clue on what to do to prevent such malfunction? Thank you.

Login -> kicks back to login screen - can't get into OS

Using VMWare Player 5.0.2 build-1031769 on Windows 7 laptop. Guest OS is CentOS 6.4.

It was working very well for me for a few days - I was installing SW packages and getting a regular user environment setup.

Issue is now: When I startup the guest OS, I am prompted for login as expected. I provide the credentials for my regular user account I had been logging in as and it looks like it's logging me in, then it puts my back to the login screen. No messages displayed, no unusual looking VMWare Player logfile messages, etc. I am using the right credentials because when I use a bad password, I get a message that credentials aren't right.

I did search these discussion forums and saw nothing that seemed very relevant here, except I did try expanding the VM disk space per one suggestion. I am unable to login to change the OS configuration (repartition disk and expand file system).

Any other suggestions on what the problem might be - I don't want to abandon this OS and start over - did a lot of work on it to date.

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system error

Running VMPlayer version 3.1.3 build-324285 on Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit with 8G memory.

When I try to install certain Linux-based VMs from ISOs, within few seconds, I get the error:

"The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point."

(Also see screenshot attached)

This doesn't happen on other Linux/Windows-based ISOs though. I've Googled the web & VMTN, but haven't found a relevant

answer to my issue.

Thanks in advance

Using VMWare Virtual Player on WinXP Pro Host.
Ubuntu is Guest.

I was trying to share a folder - i could not. I followed the instructions but
under mnt/hgfs, the shared folder is not found:
http://pubs.vmware.com/workstation-9/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.ws.using.doc%2FGUID-D6D9A5FD-7F5F-4C95-AFAB-EDE9335F5562.html

Should I create a folder on Ubuntu to match the folder - the instructions above does not state that.

Virtual player related software  are all updated.

Then searched goog and did several tips implemented on Ubuntu.

Still getting the error of:
mounting failed with the error no such device vboxsf

Any tips to fix this?

How would I go about configuring VMWare to use a specific GPU aka set GPU affinity? I'm on a multi-GPU system and don't want VMWare using the primary GPU since it slows down the whole system quite a bit.

My GPU is the AMD HD 6800 series.

The danish part basically says "No such file or catalog". I believe it has something to do with a newer Linux version, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone please help me?

Addendum: I'm running Linux Mint 15 with kernel version 3.8.0.25.43

debugCtl in vmware player

Hi,

I'm playing around with the debug functions of the x86 processor and specifically trying to work with debugCtl functionality (http://support.amd.com/us/Processor_TechDocs/24593_APM_v2.pdf, page 353).

I tried to activate this feature by writing (in kernel mode) 1 to the msr number 1d9 but when reading the value back I get a 0.

after a few hours of debugging my code I tried it on my physical computer and it worked.

I wanted to know whether I need to change the configuration to enable this feature or its not supported, and if it's supported in another in another vmware product.

Thanks

Yoav

Keyboard doesn't respond while running RHEL 6 on Vmplayer

I have been trying to boot RHEL on command line mode and the keyboard doesn't respond most of the times...

There is a start up script runs during boot up and it asks for input from user...but for some reason keyboard doesn't respond to it most of the times...if it does, some input is missing...

I had no running it on RHEL 5.9 over Vmplayer...

Is this a known isssue?

Note : And the Vmplayer is running on Windows 7 and I have tried on both laptop keyboards and usb keyboard, no luck on either cases though...

Read partition table from VMDK * HELP PLEASE *

I need your help.

I have lost a partition due to bad usage of gparted. I need to restore MBR from a vmdk file that I created before. The VMDK is not a whole virtual disk but just the headers pointing to the physical device. (using raw partition as a virtual disk). I created that file from the original physical drive and worked like a charm. I got two different files:

- Windows 7-0.vmdk. This is the "pointer" to the physical drive, I'm dumping the contentents here.

USB not visible in WinME guest

I have WinXP Pro SP3 as my host and VMware Player 5.0.2, with WinME as my guest OS.  With my guest activated, the sooner I plug in my USB flash drive, I get the following message:

The following devices can be connected to this virtual machine using the status bar of choosing VM > Removable Devices:

Super Top Mass Storage Device

Each device can be connected either to the host or to one virtual machine at a time.

Once I clicked "OK", I went to the menu bar under Player and clicked Removable Devices > Super Top Mass Storage Device > Connect (disconnect from host),  Unfortunately, in my guest OS, no USB flash drive icon shows up in the My Computer window.

So, i checked the Control Panel, clicked on the System icon and clicked the Device Manager tab.  Question marks appear under the category Other Devices and its subcategories, PCI System Perhpheral and PCI Universal Serial Bus.  Obviously no devices related to these categories were detected or installed, according to the system.

So, i clicked on the icon for VMware Tools and clicked the tab Devices.  The following message was displayed:

No removable devices are available.  Either this virtual machine has no removable devices or its configuration does not allow you to connect or disconnect them.

I had this problem last year with VMware Player 4.0.x.  No USB device could be detected by my WinME guest under VMware 4.0, and technical assistance was useless.  So. I hope you'll forgive me if I have zero patience regarding my request for a solution to this ongoing problem, one that I thought VMware would have fixed by now.

By the way, VMware Tools is installed, and so is VMware VIX API (no idea exactly how this program is meant to be utilized).

At the end of the installation, the MSI installer tries to register a VMWare process for allowed permission for AUTHD protocol through the firewall. This fails with the above and below error.

I'm using Windows 7 64 bits and run it as local admin for installation. I tried both with and without SP1, tried restarts, closed virus scanners and the like, cleaning %TEMP% and running installation process with -c for cleaning up. None of these help. I've attached the MSI installation log, which shows the following line where it goes wrong:

Looking for the error 1603 gives some hits on Microsoft sites, but nothing that actually solves this issue. I've seen this reported once before on this forum with the remark that reinstalling would help. However, after eight times installing, I'm pretty sure it doesn't help in my case. Anybody any other ideas? Can I request the installer to simply succeed (i.e., not remove everything afterwards and continue on error) and add the exception rule to the firewall myself?

I have built a VMWare Player guest using Win7 OS.  Host is also Win7.  I have tried everything I know (not much LOL), but am unable to connect a network that includes internet.

I also have a guest that is WinXP and the internet is connected and works fine.  Same with my Ubantu guest.  Plz Help

Cannot copy/paste from WinXP host to WinME guest with VMware Player 5.0.2

I want to copy files from my Windows XP host OS and paste into my Windows ME guest OS.  Unfortunately, it is not that simple.

Does the copy/paste procedure require a shared folder?  And what is the procedure for creating a shared folder that my WinME guest can access?

WinXP Guest Performance Issues under Linux Host (Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS) using Player 5.0.5

Just wondering if anyone has any hints or tips for improving the performance of a Windows Guest running under a Linux Host. I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04.2 LTS. I had my Windows XP Guest running very smoothly under 10.04 but under 12.04.2 the performance is much degraded.  My perf benchmark is based on running Netflix "watch instantly" videos in my WinXP Guest.  My old 10.04  system would allow these Netflix videos to run very smoothly with no noticeable video/audio interrupts.   Under the 12.04.2 LTS Host the same video and audio is very choppy; basically unusable.  I remember having similar perf issues when I first installed VMWare under 10.04; I made a kernel runtime parameter change that resolved the Guest perf problem, but I cannot recall what that parameter was (my mistake not writing it down).   Or could it be a fundamental difference between Linux V2 and V3 kernels that would cause this?  Hope not, as that would mean moving from 10.04 to 12.04.2 was not such a good idea for me.

Need help setting up web server in W7 host, Ubuntu guest

Hello,

I am trying to set up a web server so I can test some HTML/PHP code. I installed and configured Ubuntu Server in the guest machine, but can't get to it.

What works so far:

What doesn't work:

What I did so far:

  • iptables -F
  • Installed VMware Tools

Another problem is that I don't know exactly what log(s) should I post here or how to do it, so if someone can help, please tell me and I'll copy them here. I'm guessing it's something with the configuration of the guest itself, being a server OS and all.

Thanks!

Paying for a version of Mac OS version of VMware Player - VMware Fusion

It's extremely upsetting to know that VMware has decided to discriminate between Windows and Linux and Mac users. Why is VMware Player free for these OSes and not for VMware Fusion. This is just wrong! I would like the VMware Fusion to be completely free for non commercial purposes! and have the same licensing agreements as VMware Player.

If others have the same rant, join the discussion, post your rant and show to VMware that this is wrong!

How to Copy VM

Is there any way to copy a VM and rename the copy so that it shows up in the VMware Player list as another VM?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks, Jim
