Is it possible for a VM to see specialized hardware like physics cards, DSP boards, etc or would those require special drivers for VMs?

VMWare Player 5.0.0: 64 Bit Host, 32 bit created VMs

Hello,

I have a laptop that runs Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on which I created 32 Bit VMs using VMPlayer 5.0.0.  I also have a laptop with Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit and I want to run the same VMs I created on the 32 bit laptop.

Can I run the same install of VMPlayer 5.0.0 on the 64 bit machine and use the 32 bit VMs I created on the 32 Bit machine?

Thanks in advance.

Player 5 single window pixel cutoff?

I run Player 5 on a x64 netbook host under Ubuntu 12.04.1. Guest is 32-bit Windows 7. The netbook screen resolution is 1024x600.

If I auto-hide the Windows taskbar (on the bottom of the screen) in Single Window mode, the hidden taskbar effectively "disappears" and is no longer accessible. If I switch to full screen mode, then the pixel-high hidden taskbar is accessible again. For now, my workaround for single window mode is to move the Windows taskbar to a different side of the screen and hide it there.

Looking closely, it looks like the bottom pixel or two in single window mode are "cutoff". I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case in Player 4.

Not sure if it's related, but the VM seems confused about whether Tools are installed. They are, but it kept telling me to install them until I disabled the message manually. I did try re-installing Tools, but the message remained. Maybe another problem.

Typing is faulty in vmware

Hi all,

I  have a typing problem associated with vmware, the frequency on how it  reads the kb buffer is more than how fast the characters are typed, also  it is clearly showing that it is screwing up when clearing up the  buffer after it has read a character even though the kernel demands it  does so....

I'm getting typing errors like this:

example: ggggoooogglleee..coomm instead of google.com

Has anyone got a suggested solution to this problem?, this will be much appreciated.

Thank you for any advice offered.:)

VMPlayer 5: Suse 12.2 64bit host & 32bit Windows XP guest crashes

Hi,

I installed VMPlayer 5 on Suse linux 64bit as host, and planned to run Win XP as guest. It all goes well as long as Win XP is installing on a text screen, but as soon as it launches the graphical interface ("setup is starting windows") the X-server under linux crashes, and the system reboots.

Hardware: Thinkpad T530, with a NVIDIA NVS 5400M graphics card.

Any hint what to try next would be great [I've been running Win XP as a guest on many generations of Suse 32bit using VMPlayer 3.1.4 - so it's really the first time for me that VMPlayer is letting me down].

Thanks!

Ubuntu guest gets new NAT IP every time I wake my laptop

I have 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 (happened with prior releases, too) installed as a guest OS in VMware Player 5.0 on a 64-bit Windows 7 host.  The guest has a NAT interface configured.  The host is a laptop and I frequently put it to sleep for the commute to/from the office.  Every time I put the laptop to sleep with the guest running, when I wake the laptop from sleep, the NAT NIC is assigned a new NAT IP.

How can I get a consistent address assigned?

Can I configure the VMware Player DHCP server on the NAT subnet?  Say to do static DHCP?

Is there a way to know what pool is available to the NAT DHCP server so I could assign a static IP address to the guest that would be safe from collisions?

Thanks.

VMWare Player 5.0 bridged network doesn't work

$

I have a laptop with WIndows 7, and connect wireless to the business network. On my host the wireless connection is working fine.

I use VMWare Player 5.0 and have setup a virtual machine with Windows 7, and have set the network adapter to 'bridged' because I would like the virtual machine to be recognized as a separate machine so that I can access all network resources easily.

However, it doesn't work: I don't have any internet and network connectivity in the virtual machine.

I have no idea how to fix this... can someone suggest what I can do to make it work? I already looked for solution, like extracting the Virtual Network Editor from the cab file, but it seems it is not there anymore in version 5... Is it trying to use my wired connection or something, instead of wireless?

(PS - if I use NAT I have internet connection, but I have difficulties in accessing network resources)

Thanks!

EDIT - maybe this is useful - if I go to adapters on the host machine, I see VMNet1 which displays 'Identifying' all the time.

VMware player 5 guest loses network after 1 hour

I have VMware player 5.0.0 running on Windows 7 x64, the guest VM is 32-bit Windows XP. The guest network is bridged.

After an hour of use, the network within the VM stops working. By that I mean that Windows XP starts trying to do what looks like a DHCP, then eventually gives up and says that the network connection has limited connectivity (which is an understatement). doing a DHCP release/renew doesn't work, disabling the NIC via Windows XP just seems to cause the ncpa.cpl dialogue to hang. The NIC is a VMware accelerated AMD PCnet (not my choice, but I can't see how to change the type in VMware Player...).

My DHCP lease time is 1 hour, but I don't understand why a renew would fail when it has clearly got an address quite happily when booted up.

For now I've changed the lease time to 8 hours which I hope will make the problem go away... assuming it is somehow DHCP related.

Don't suppose anyone has any ideas?

VMware Player 5.0.0 Caps & Num leds don't light on

Hi all,

I have just upgraded to VMware Player 5.0.0. It works fine, but I notice this little problem: caps lock and num lock keys leds don't light on anymore in guest OS when pressing respective keys.

Guest OS Windows XP 32 bit working full screen; Host OS Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. In host OS every led works fine, even with VMs running in background.

Host PC: Acer Aspire 5820TG laptop with Italian keyboard including numeric keypad.

Is there any workaround/fix?

Thanks everybody,

Gianfranco

Host OS is Windows 7. Guest is Windows XP Pro SP2. Is there a way around this?

VMware Player 5.0.0 - Switching between multiple VMs

Hi there,

I've just started using version 5 of Player, and try as I might I've been unable to figure out how to switch between multiple full-screen VMs on a single host.  Previous versions have had a couple of handy arrow symbols on the filp-down menu at the top of the screen, which allowed you to skip between however many VMs you had running.  This facility seems to have disappeared in the new version.

Can anyone help..?!

Thanks,

Glen

How do I put a line at the end of .vmx file?

[Sorry for n00b question but my vmware player keeps auto-repeating characters without a command to do so and I am lost as to how to put a line at the end of vmx file, I failed at my first two attempts, please help!!

Here is instructions from vmware....

Repeated characters when typing in remote console
Details
When typing into a remote console, you see unintended repeated keystrokes.
Solution

If you are using a wide-area or low-bandwidth connection, the time delay over the network may be long enough to cause the virtual machine to start auto-repeat.

To reduce these effects, increase the time threshold necessary for auto-repeat in the remote console.

    Power off the virtual machine.
Add a line, similar to this, at the end of your virtual machine's configuration (.vmx) file:

    keyboard.typematicMinDelay = "2000000"

Hi all, I have a question to clarify.
I have the vmware workstation 7.1.4 and I have installed in a virtual machine on BACtrack addition I have a wifi card (usb) connected virtual machine wing which has internet virtual machine from the usb wifi, the problem I have is that as I can distribute internet from usb wifi which is on the virtual machine to my physical machine
Note: I am aware that it would be easier to connect usb wifi card directly to the physical machine
