Map Virtual Disk using Windows Explorer - "Error Reading Volume Information"

$

My system is Windows 7 SP1 32-bit with VMware Player 5.0.2 I've tried to open an VMDK using the right click explorer menu.

I've tried a couple of virtual disks and the result is the same "Error Reading Volume Information" on the dialog that appears after the right click. The specific VM I'm interested in is a Win7 machine, so there shouldn't be any compatibility issues with the files systems.

The machine is completely turned off, and I'm using an administrator user.

Where can I start looking?

WHEA-Logger warnings only with VMWare Player

$

Since building my new Haswell 7x64 system on 6/26, I've found several warnings like this one in my Event Viewer log, and I've determined they coincide exactly with the times I ran VMs for Windows 8.1 and 7:

*****

Log Name:      System

Source:        Microsoft-Windows-WHEA-Logger

Date:          7/18/2013 1:31:03 PM

Event ID:      19

Task Category: None

Level:         Warning

Keywords:

User:          LOCAL SERVICE

Computer:      ---

Description:

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core

Error Source: Corrected Machine Check

Error Type: Internal parity error

Processor ID: 2

*****

The computer has been in heavy use 16 hours a day since I built it on 6/26. However, these warnings have been generated only during the times I was running VMs for Windows 8.1 and 7, and those times have been infrequent and of short duration, about a half dozen runs lasting five minutes or less each. This is documented conclusively by the VMWare logfiles, for the warning times are sandwiched between the VM start and stop times that appear in the logs. There were two such warnings when I discovered the issue on 7/14. While I can't consistently repro it, I managed to get two new warnings out of several attempts within the first few minutes of starting the VMs. I have no idea what aspect of using the VMs triggers it. I run the VMs in windows and never mess with the Unity mode. They are vanilla installs, new copies of VMs I built on my i5 750 system and archived for easy restoration, and basically I've just been verifying they work.

My system is as follows, and I am not now overclocking, nor have I ever overclocked anything:

i5 4670 and Hyper 212 Evo

Asus Gryphon Z87, BIOS 1007 and now 1206

Crucial Ballistix Sport 8 GB 1.35v DDR3-1600 DIMMs x 2, 16 GB total

Intel 4600 graphics -> monitor

Nvidia GT430 -> TV

Seasonic X650 PSU

Samsung 830 SSD boot drive, two 2 TB WD Green drives, all TrueCrypted. The VMs are on the SSD.

Windows 7 x64 w/ SP1, fully patched, installed 6/26

VMWare Player 5.0.2 build-1031769

I've observed Processor ID values of 0, 2, 4, and 6, which I don't understand as the CPU is quad-core with no hyperthreading.

The system is stable on Prime95, Aida64, and Intel Linpack, plus MemTest86+ 5.0 RC1. The stress tests do not provoke the warning, nor do they cause excessively high temps. CPU-intensive multitasking that uses all four cores such as transcoding video with Handbrake while doing network file copies or downloading from the Internet while watching video or browsing the web does not cause the warnings. The only thing that causes the warnings is running a VM in VMWare Player, and it tends to happen within the first few minutes, when CPU usage is nil.

I've had no BSODs or abnormal behavior of any kind; this new system has been great. That said, these warnings are still troubling. From googling, I've learned that overclockers commonly observe WHEA-Logger warnings when stressing the system under extreme overclocking, and they say the solution is usually more vCore. However, I'm not overclocking, and I don't think the 4670 is capable of it anyway. Besides, the warnings occur when my system is basically idle and only when running a VM in VMWare Player. They don't occur at any other times.

Has anyone heard of a problem like this with VMWare Player? Are there any Haswell users who don't observe this problem with VMWare Player?

mouse clicks not registering in Win98SE guest after resume

I've set up a Windows 98SE guest on a Windows 7 64-bit host, using VMWare Player 5.0.2. The host is running the latest VMWare Tools.

Often, after resuming the suspended guest, mouse clicks do not appear to be received by the guest. Mouse movement is fine. Keyboard is fine. Since we can use the keyboard, we can reboot the guest cleanly, but it's a nuisance. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Linux kernel headers not found??

Hi community,

I just upgraded my debian Linux system to 3.9-1-686-pae. Following that, I installed the linux kernel headers.

They are installed using the package linux-headers-3.9-1-686-pae, and they are actually available in

/usr/src/linux-headers-3.9-1-686-pae.

However, when I start vmware I get a complaint from the kernel module updater that it can't find the

headers. After specifying the explicit location in the specification window that's offered by the updater it still

complains about the kernel headers not being available. In the specification window I entered

/usr/src/linux-headers-3.9-1-686-pae.

I've successfully updated vmware modules in the past, and this is the first time I experience the abovementioned

problem. If anybody has a solution for this problem, I'd appreciate it if you could share it. Hints and suggestions

are of course also welcome.

Cheers,

Frank Brokken.

Virtual Machine Settings Window Freezes With Multiple NICs

$

I have VMware Player 5.0.2 installed on a Windows XP SP3 host and any time I attempt to view the virtual machine settings on a VM that has multiple NICs installed on it the settings window freezes and forces me to crash VMware Player.

The type of NIC (NAT, host-only, LAN segment, etc.) doesn't seem to matter.  As long as there's no more than one NIC of any type everything works fine.  But as soon as I add a second NIC of any type and save the changes, then the next time I try to view the virtual machine settings the settings screen locks up and I have to go in and manually edit the machines .vmx file in order to make any changes.

Is this a known issue?  Can anyone else confirm they're having this issue?

All VMs Start with Black Screen

Recently moved all my VMs from Host Win7-64bit to Win8-64bit.

Fresh install of Player v 5.0.2 build-1031769

Computer is Acer Aspire M Intel i5 @ 1.8Ghz

Graphics is Intel HD 4000

When any of the various VMs are started from the Powered Off state, the player window will open and a big black screen will appear where the guest display should be shown. The guest OS does indeed boot, right up to the login screen although with no display visible. If I try to click on the close button in the upper right corner, I get a dialog box that says "The Virtual Machine is Busy". My only option is to end the vmplayer.exe task using task manager. Once I do that, the VM shows state as Powered On in the Library. If I Play it the 2nd time, the VM will resume operating correctly with the proper display at the immediate point where I expected it to be when I ended the vmplayer.exe task earlier.

Presence or absence of Tools in Guest does not affect the problem.

All 3 of my VMs have the exact same behavior. Guest operating Systems are: WinXP-SP3-32bit, Win7-64bit built from the VMware Converter, and Server 2008 from the MS eval ISO.

Any ideas? Once the play/end task/play sequence is performed the VM works correctly. Until it is shutdown or hibernated. A VM restart does not exhibit this symptom. The problem is reproducible with all VMs every time.

Provided vmx for the XP VM and a few logs.

Thanks in advance. I'm so close to having this work it's even more frustrating than if it didn't work at all.

VMware Player can't connect to usb drive

I am using Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1 and have installed VMware Player 5.0.2 build-1031769.

I am connecting a seagate 1tb usb hdd to my pc after i have opened VMware player.  I am trying to connect to the usb drive in order to run a virtual image off of the drive.  the external drive connects to the host pc instead of the VMware Player.  In the player it recognizes the drive and i click on disconnect from host and connect to the player but it gives the error "The connection for the usb device" seagate" was unsuccessful the device is currently in use"  I have gone to the host pc and have ejected the device but i end up with the same error.

Any advice on how I can connect this usb hdd to the player?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Slow, unsychronised crosshair cursor when using AutoCAD 2013 with VMware Player 5.0.2

$

Hi there,

I've been having this issue with my VM all week, my cursor tracks fine outside of AutoCAD 2013, and within AutoCAD it tracks fine when I'm using any cursor EXCEPT the big crosshair (so panning and navigating context menu's works fine - but drawing a line for example, is slow and unsynchronised - which on many occasions had lead me to minimizing my VM entirely - such a pain!)

I've done a little research, but the only similar issue I saw was in VMware Fusion, and I'm using VMware player 5.0.2 build-1031769, so I don't have (or can't find) "don't synchronize mouse for games" options.

any help with this would be great - AutoCAD is 95% of what I use the VM for, and it's getting really frustrating!

thanks in advance!

Advice needed: Player and native file systems

$

Hi, all --

We have an application that we'd like to deliver in VMware Player. This would work best if it could open files in the native file system (i.e, on the host OS).

We're running lots of VMware Workstation but have no experience with Player.

Does Player have the ability to access native file systems directly (e.g., in an application's file open dialog box)? If so, I can justify spending time to dig deeper into Player.

Thanks!

Supplying with Fusion Pro license

I want to supply PC's to my customers with VMWARE player installed with a virtual machine.

I need a Fusion Pro license to do this. But I can only find Fusion Pro licenses being sold as 'Electronic downloads'.

What do I actually supply to my customer as a 'license'?

VMware to Vista - screen lock

$

I purchased a 21.5 inch iMac and wanted my windows programs on it so I purchased VMware Fusion 5.

I downloaded the Fusion 5 and migrated all of my information into the iMac.  When I try to get the Windows Vista to boot I get the "Startup Repair" which does not finish and locks the screen so that I have to reboot the iMac to get back into the system.

I've tried to delete the program and thought that I did but everytime I try to reinstall it, I get the same result.

How do I get past this problem?

How to set up VMplayer 3 network for VMs to comminicate with each other ?

$

Folks,

Hello. I am using VMPlayer 3.

Host OS: Windows 7
Guest OS:Windows XP and Oracle Linux 5

I need to set up the network and enable Windows XP communicate with Oracle Linux 5.

I follow this tutorial http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_devices_serial_2vms.html to configure 2 VMs in Windows 7 Host machine.

I have tried to test 2 VMs in the way as below:

In Linux, [user@localhost ~]$ping WindowsXP_HostName
Its output: unknown host WindowsXP_HostName

In Windows XP Command Prompt:
C:\ping localhost.localdomain
Its output: pinging localhost.localdomain 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data...
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=2ms, TTL=128

It replies a few times and then disconnected by itself. It seems that Windows XP is pinging itself and not Linux Server. The hostname of Linux Server is "localhost.localdomain" as well. It's a kind of confusing to me.

From the above infromation, we  can see 2 VMs cannot connect with each other.

Can any folk provide a tutorial or example or case study to configure VMPlayer 3 to enable 2 VMs communicate with each other step by step ?

Very grateful in advance.

Problems virtualizing Windows 8 OEM using VMware Converter 5.1 and Player 5.0

$

G'day,

I recently purchased a Dell XPS8700 workstation which came with Windows 8 installed.

I want to install Ubuntu (not dual-boot) on it but before doing so I wanted to virtualize Windows 8.

So, I downloaded VMware Converter 5.1 Standalone, and used it to create a VM of Windows 8. So far so good.

I then tried to run this VM in VMware Player 5.02 (both the Windows and Ubuntu versions). Player recognises the VM correctly but when I try to power it on I see a black screen for a few seconds and then it exits. There are no error messages produced in the logs that indicate what the problem is.

Has anyone had success virtualizing Windows 8 for use with VMware Player?

Thanks,

Chris.

Catch 22, win2000 Guest and VM-Tools

$

Hi All,

Trying to get win2000-SP4 working as a guest from an iso. It installs and runs OK, but when I try to install vm-tools I get an error about missing DLLs.

OK, so some searching and I find that I need the win2000 rollup from msoft and I now have that, but now that catch 22.

The VM win2000 installation will not allow me to share a folder without the vm-tools and same for connecting to the host (win7pro) via the network.

Also, win2000 cannot access the internet to direct download the rollup, I assume that will be fixed when the vm-tools are finally installed.

So, how can I get the win2000 guest to see the rollup so I can install it?

Thanks

Harry

Set up network Issue: Host Windows 7 and Guest Windows XP and Guest Linux

Folks,

Hello. I am using VMPlayer 3.
Host OS: Windows 7
Guest OS:Windows XP and Oracle Linux 5

I need to set up the network and enable Guest OS Windows XP communicate with Oracle Linux 5.

In Host Windows 7 command prompt C:\ipconfig and Its output:

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IPv4 Address 192.168.196.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: nothing

I configure Windows 7 and add default gateway IP and DNS server for VMnet8 as below:

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:
IPv4 Address 192.168.196.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.196.2
Preferred DNS server 8.8.8.8
Alternate DNS server 8.8.4.4

In Guest OS Windows XP command prompt C:\ipconfig and Its output:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: localdomain
IPv4 Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0
Default gateway: nothing

I configure Windows XP and add gateway IP and DNS server as below:

IPv4 Address 192.168.196.101
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.196.201
Preferred DNS server 8.8.8.8
Alternate DNS server 8.8.4.4

In Guest OS Oracle Linux 5, I configure eht0 as below:

[root@localhost /]# system-config-network

IPv4 Address 192.168.196.102
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.196.202
There is no DNS server.

Finally, I test the 3 machines' connection as below:

In Windows 7:
C:\> ping 192.168.196.101
C:\> ping 192.168.196.102
Both commands have the same outputs: Destination Host Unreachable.

In Windows XP:
C:\> ping 192.168.196.1
C:\> ping 192.168.196.102
Both commands have the same outputs: Destination Host Unreachable.

In Oracle Linux 5:
C:\> ping 192.168.196.1
C:\> ping 192.168.196.101
Both commands have the same outputs: Destination Host Unreachable.

As we see above, the 3 machines cannot connect with each other. Can any folk help to solve the issue ?

Very grateful in advance.

Installing VMPlayer prevents me from using wireless printer/scanner

$

Hi.  I am running Windows 8 on a 64-bit Dell XPS 8500 PC.  I use an Epson Workforce 545 printer through a wireless connection.  This always has worked great.

I recently installed VMPlayer on my PC.  After I did this, my PC stopped being able to communicate with my printer.  Note that I was attempting to use my printer not through VMPlayer but through my native Windows 8 environment.  I uninstalled VMPlayer, and once again I was able to communicate with my printer.

Any ideas why this happens and how I can install VMPlayer without losing the ability to use my wireless printer?

Thanks,

Ken
