Minecraft on VMWare Player

I'm having problem with the mouse cursor / moment when playing Minecraft (MC) on VMWare. The problem has to do with the mouse not getting locked to the VMWare window and MC.

Normal when you play MC the mouse get locked in the middle of the MC window. Even when you move the mouse left/right/up/down the mouse cursor are still located in the middle of MC window. So when you press ESC to get out the menu your mouse cursor show up in the middle of the MC window.

When playing in a VMWare window everything looks right, but the mouse cursor are moving to the left and right and do not keeping it's focus in the middle of MC. So if I move to the right and press ESC I will NOT see the mouse cursor in the middle of MC, but it has moved to the right.

This also confuses the MC client, because it keeps turning my char to the right even after I have stopped moving the mouse. Guess it's because the MC client detects cursor are not in the middle of MC and think that is because I'm moving the mouse.

If I move the mouse cursor long enough to one side it gets released from the VMWare windows and I can use it on my PC. From what I have found, VMWare have got an automatic grab/ungrab of the mouse when you get focus on/off the VMWare window. So what I'm looking for is a way to turn this feature off. So one has to use Ctrl-Alt to release the mouse from the VMware windows.

Anyone that can help me with the settings for doing this ?

VMWare doesn't start after kernel update

Hello,

I've just updated my kernel to 3.10.0-997-generic. After that VMWare Player doesn't start anymore.

I've tried to run patches and different solutions I found in google, but it didn't worked yet.

This is the log of my last attempt.

Thanks in advance

Migration form Ubuntu x32 to Win7 x64

Hi all,

I'm using VMware Player 5.0.1 build-894247 installed on Ubuntu x32 (workstation is x64 )

In VM Player I have installed Win7 x64.

Now I would like to copy my Win7 x64 bits instance to another computer. (It will be the same computer but I will format it and install Win7 x64 directly instead Ubuntu x32 – then on Win7 x64 I will install VM Player and there I would like to move my folder with Win7 x64 from Ubuntu x32).

It is possible? It will be works fine?

I tried do this with different instance Win7 x64 on Ubuntu x32, but I had message that It will be not work because the files are from system x32, and they can’t run it on x64 system.

Best regards

Win 7 64-bit host and Server 2008 SP2 64-bit guest. System periodically slows / stalls

The hardware is

i7-2655LE with a QM67 chipset, 8GB memory and 500GB hard drive.

The host system is just there to launch the image and I do not want the user to be able to access the host system.

Image settings = 2 cores, 4096 MB memory.

I have installed a licensed version of Workstation on the host and only use player. The only modifications to the preferences.ini file are below which are used to disable the user from accessing the host system from the guest image.

pref.vmplayer.fullscreen.autohide = "true"

pref.vmplayer.deviceBarToplevel = "true"

pref.vmplayer.fullscreen.nobar = "true"

pref.fullscreen.toolbarpixels = "0"

pref.hotkey.gui = "true"

pref.hotkey.shift = "true"

pref.hotkey.control = "true"

pref.hotkey.alt = "true"

hints.hideall = "true"

I expanded the image to use 400GB of the 500GB hard drive.

The ethernet connection is set to NAT.

The image is running Rockwell software (industrial automation) that accesses SQL server 2008 R2 64-bit for data.

After 30 mins of so, the system 'stalls' for about 2 minutes, then works normally. This keeps happening with differing periodic intervals, but it usually stalls for about 2 mins.

I can run this image on my developer machine and I do not see these slowdowns. My system is an i5 with 6GB memory but running Windows server 2008 as the host OS.

I have a list of memory optimisations from Continums website that I will try, but are there any Win 7 64-bit optimisations that I can do?

I also read that its sometimes better to have less memory assigned to the image? Is there any simple guidelines to this?

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Interesting (to me) Speed timing

So, I have Player installed on a slowish laptop.

I have win8 Enterprise installed.

Close Player with "Suspend" = 1:22 (1-m :22-s)

Start Player from Suspend = 1:34

Close Player with "Shut-down" = 0:33

Start Player from "Shut-down" = 0:59

So, unless you absolutely need to save the Virtual Machine-State, it is much faster to use "Shut-down" from both directions.

Just sayin'

Player, win8 and Truecrypt questions?

$

Hi All,

I am trying the win8 eval copy and am waiting fro Truecrypt to finish encrypting the win8 System partition, which popped the thought to mind.

Truecrypt will encrypt all sectors of a drive whether there is data or not so that to a Partition manager for instance, the drive looks full.

So far, so good. But, I understand that Player will expand the virtual hard drive space the Host is providing to suit the needs of the Guest up to the predefined max.

Now the questions:

1:

As the virtual drive is expanded, what happens with the newly available sectors regrading Truecrypt's encryption?

2:

Does Truecrypt magically understand the drive just suddenly got bigger and it needs to encrypt all the new empty sectors?

3:

Do only the originally encrypted sectors remain as the only encrypted data?

4:

Does Player copy the last sector of the original virtual drive and use it as a boilerplate for formatting the sectors it is adding to the expanding virtual drive?

Thanks

Network connection drops for 30 seconds occassionally

I've recently installed VMWare Player 5.0.2, to run a Windows 7 x64 Pro virtual machine.  I did this because I've upgraded to Windows 8.1, and my citrix receiver no longer works, meaning I can't connect to work remotely any more.  I used to use "Virtual XP Mode" for connecting to work when I had Win 7 on my PC, as I kind of like having all my work stuff in a separate virtual machine anyway.

Originally after installing Win 8.1, and realising I was never going to get Citrix working, I turned to client Hyper-V to run a win 7 VM.  That worked ok, but I quickly got annoyed with the inability to dynamically resize my VM's screen res, or run in proper full screen.  While googling these issues I realised VMWare Player would be a much better solution.  So i uninstalled Hyper-V via add/remove programs, and installed Player.

It's all set up and working, but ever since installing this a week or so ago, my network connectivity just completely drops, for around 30-60 seconds occassionally.  I'll simply go to open a new web page, and notice a delay, before eventually the web page times out.  If I take a deep breath and count to ten, then refresh, the page loads.  It seems to be happening on both my VM's virtual network adapter, as well as my physical machine's, at the same time.  It's currently happening at least a couple of times an hour.  The network connection icon in my taskbar doesn't change, and I've grabbed another device (such as my tablet) to test network connectivity while my PC is out, and it's been fine, so I'm ruling out my router and/or ISP.

I have a 100mbps cable connection, with average speedtest dload speeds in the 90's.  It's a 6-core AMD cpu, with 8gb ram.  The network card is an on-board gigabit card, hard wired to a gigabit port on my router.

Can anyone suggest what I should do to trace what's going on with these regular network dropouts?  I've attached a screenshot of my network setup:

Delete snapshots created with Workstation using Player

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to expand the disk on my Ubuntu VM (which requires all snapshots to be gone), but the VM seems to have some snapshots left over from my VMWare Workstation trial - and I can't for the life of me figure out how to delete the snapshots without breaking the entire VM.

Deleting "Ubuntu-Snapshot1.vmem", "Ubuntu-Snapshot1.vmsn", "Ubuntu-Snapshot2.vmem" and "Ubuntu-Snapshot2.vmsn" didn't help - rather, it causes Player to throw an error when launching the VM.

Any bright ideas that don't require me to get Workstation? My trial has been over for a long time, and I've found Player to be completely sufficient for my needs...

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

i want to use the "cycle multiple monitors" feature with a disabled topbar.

I disabled the bar, using pref.vmplayer.fullscreen.nobar = "TRUE" in the preferences.ini.

It works all well to the point, i want to use my second monitor, because there is no hotkey for this feature. (i only saw the button in the bar so far)

So my question is now:

Is there any opportunity to use "cycle multiple monitors" without using the topbar, like a hidden hotkey?

Using Windows 8 Pro x64 with 16GB RAM as host and Windows 7 Home, Vista Home and Ubuntu 13.04 all 32bit (all 3GB of RAM and 4 virtual cores)

Network and security service failing to start, and No login prompt.

Hi,

I was using vmware player (Ubuntu 64 Bit on Windows 8 Host OS) fine. However, for a requirement I changed /etc/network/interfaces file, and added below lines to it.

auto eth1

iface eth1 inet dhcp

auto eth2

iface eth2 inet dhcp

After I rebooted the guest OS, it failed to start the Network service and Network security service, and I am not getting the login prompt at all. While booting up, once it says, "waiting upto 60 seconds for network configurations". Eventually it prompts "Booting without fill network services", and then nothing happens. I should get the login prompt at end of this, I suppose.

I tried removing two of the Network interfaces (NAT and Host only) configured in the VM configuration, but that did not help.

The whole work has come to standstill, and not sure what is the way out of this.

Thanks,

/anil.

Extracting the data from existing VM instance.

Hi,

This is in connection with the issue: Network and security service failing to start, and No login prompt.

Right now I am really facing big problem of having stuck with this issue. Is there any way I can extract some of the data that is present on this VM instance so that I can get it out, and install another VM instance to move ahead?

OR any alternative to boot this VM instance and change those entries made in the /etc/network/interfaces file?

Thanks,

/anil.

VMPlayer does not show drives D and E

Guys,

New to VMPlayer, but working deep in vCenter.

I have pulled a virtual server off the network and am trying to spin it up in VMplayer.

It spins up fine.

It is a Windows 2008 64bit R2 SQL Server.

It has three drives, C, D and E.

It is activated.

But in VMPlayer, it only shows me drive C.

And it says it is not activated.

Am I doing something wrong in VMPlayer?

Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Thanks

16 bit program won't launch in win98se VM

I recently acquired a new pc (with Zeon quad core processor). I installed VMware Player 5. The host is Win 7 64 bit. The guest is win98se. I have successfully installed all my old programs, and they all run perfectly except two. They won’t start. I get a “caused an invalid page fault” every time. They are old 16 bit programs made by the same company and require a dongle. (which is installed in LPT1) LPT1 and COM1 have been installed in the VM. Both are functioning.

Any Ideas?

Using Guest with Host VPN

I've tried googling, but only came up with answers that were a few years old, so I'm going to ask and hope someone has an updated answered.

Host machine is running Win7x64, and is connected via Windows VPN to work network.

Host IP is 192.168.1.10 (Home network, static), when connected via VPN, it's got a 192.168.0.x address (work network, dhcp)

Guest is running CentOS 6.4 via bridged, as it needs to have it's own ip address of 192.168.0.230.

What I'm trying to do is run the Guest OS on the Host machine while the Host is VPN'd to the work network, and have machines on the work network able to connect to the guest machine.

Currently, when I run the Guest OS, it's unable to ping out, either by dns or straight ip address.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to connect and function over the Host's VPN connection?

How to disable Hypethreaded core sharing in VMware Player?

$

Hello,

Is it possible to disable hypethreaded core sharing for a machine running in VMware Player?

I've read about such possibility in ESX but found nothing about doing the same in Player.

May goal is to get my virtual machine maximum power and not to run its cpus on single physical core when hyperthreading is on.

PS. Of course I've tried using task manager affinity for that purpose but it didn't work. After setting affinity for my virtual machine process it became terribly slow and completely unusable.

My machine is i7-920 with HT on. My virtual machine has 3 processors and I would like to have them running on different physlical cores which should get me maximum performance.
