VMDK Files On Windows in a GPT Partition Table

I have VMWare Player on my Windows partition and would like to use VMWare Player to access my Linux partition in Windows.   I try to use Physical Disk and select partitions, but it doesn't see any of my partitions.  It just says "Partition 0"  and its of an unknown type and its the whole drive, but it is really 4 seperate partitions (/boot, /, /home, and a extra data partition for Windows).  My Windows is on another drive.  Both Windows and Linux are installed in UEFI.

win2000 sp4 font terrible in Player.

Hi All,

I have to use win2000 for some old software that is win2000-specific and have just installed it in VMPlayer v5 and it works well. Problem is the standard win2000 font is skinny and gray and not easily readable.

I have the same win2000 (original install CD) on a laptop and the font was fine to read even when I plugged the VGA cable into this same monitor. I can only assume that the video driver that Player is using is messing with the fonts.

How can I fix this as everything I run on the Player-win2000 is using this weedy little font, but only within Player.

I can't change the font within the old software I need to run as it uses the win200 default font.

Thanks

Run Player without Internet?

Hi All,

Just tried to use the VMPlayer on my laptop out of range of house wifi. Got an error message something like "VMWare authentication not available," (or pretty close to that wording) I assume it needs to call home.

How can I get around this as I need to use the laptop and Player in the workshop and the wifi does not go that far.

Thanks

Can't install VMWare tools

I've been having this issue for a couple of weeks now. I run Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine in Debian Linux with VMWare Player 5.0.2. A new version of Tools came out and I tried several times to install it but it gives me the error, "There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and if the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator." It's a pretty vague message so it's hard to guess what the problem is. I started just cancelling it when I started Player but a while ago I decided to uninstall Tools from within Windows and attempt to install it again. I get the same error but now I'm without Tools at all. This is making it hard to play Starcraft. I would appreciate some help resolving this.

Virtual network config : web server not available

I am trying to put in place a private network with 2 VMs with VMware player 5:

Both machines run with Windows2008R2.

* First machine is the windows domain server; tomcat is installed on these machine. (I don't remember but I think  I installed the tomcat server first, and setup the domain later)

* second one, is the machine from which I would like to contact the web server.

Second machine is correctly registered in the domain; and I can login on these second machine with users that I have defined on the domain server.

I can ping first machine from the second one (using machine name or IP => no DNS problem).

Windows firewall are off on both machines .

But no way from my second machine to open web pages located on the first ...

What am I doing wrong?

WMware Player on Gentoo

I recently installed VMware Player on Gentoo, using the packages supplied by Gentoo repositories, and the installation appeared to proceed well enough. I configured it to start automatically as a service at boot. However, when I view the startup log at /var/log/rc.log in Gentoo, I see the following errors occurring in relation to the VMware service:

Can't Connect CD

Hi,

If I start XP in Player and the USB CD is not connected I get an "ide:1 not available, do you want to connect this next time..." message so I click "Yes"

Once XP is up and running, I plug in the CD and then right click the icon at the top and click "Connect" but I again get the "ide:1 not available..." error.

In order for the CD to be connected, I have to turn off the Player with the "Suspend" option, wait until the snapshot is saved then restart Player.

Is this a bug or is this something I am doing wrong?

What do I need to do to be able to connect to the CD once in XP and Player?

By the way, if I plug anything else in the USB hub of the host, XP notices it right away so it is something to do with the CD and Player.

Thanks

Half-life 2 - 3D issue with VM Player 4.0

Hello,

Since I upgrated from VM player 3.1 to VM player 4.0, Half-life 2 has stopped working properly.  The game look seems to be in 16-bit color with boosted gamma (my screen is almost white).

I tried to reinstall the game but it didn't fixed the problem.

Is this problem related to VM Player 4.0?  Can someone else run HL2 in VM Player 4.0?

Multiple Files - Feature or Issue?

$

Hi All,

When I created the VM for XP I kept the pre-selected "Multiple files" option thinking (hoping?) that when doing backups, only the files that actually changed when running the VM, would need backing up.

Unfortunately, when I start the VM, all of the files have their Last Accessed Date change to Today. This means that even if I only start XP and then close straight away, without doing anything else, all 19G of files need backing up next time I do a backup.

Is it possible to have only the VM files that are used or changed to have their Date changed? If not then this should be regarded as a feature request. The files sizes all stayed the same, the only thing that changed was the Date. Come next backup time, I have to wait 20-minutes instead of 5.

p.s. I realize the Date thing is a windows doing, but the existing dates could be grabbed by Player on starting the VM and then adjusted (grep) on exit after windows has had it's play with the dates when they are closed.

ubuntu host, winXP guset, can't access link files in shared folder.

I installed XP guest on ubuntu, adding a shared folder and  mapping it as a network driver in XP.

Then it turned out that I can't access any soft link files of that folder in XP, it says like 'access deny'.

And as I can see, all these link files show size of 1KB in XP no matter what their real sizes are.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Using VMWare Player on Win7 Bootcamp partition to access Mac OSX?

Greetings,

I am new to VMWare, and I have Fusion for Mac OSX which accesses my Bootcamp partition (Win7).

I recently installed VMWare Workstation 9 for Windows which includes VMWare Player.

Is there anyway to access my Mac OSX partition from the Bootcamp side like I do when I use Fusion on the Mac side to access Win7?

I see the answer go both ways, but wanted to post in the forum to be sure.

    Thanks!

Create VMachine from some old hard drives?

Create VMachine from some old hard drives?

I have some old hard drives with win2000 and would like to convert them to run within Player. I tried using VMWare Converter and a running PC and it wanted 2-days and 11-hours to make a VMachine of a 50% full, 14G drive. Hmmm. So, I let it have it's head and eventually it was complete. Then added it to Player's list and started it.

It got about 1/2 way through the win2000 boot sequence then win2000 declared a disk error. Stating that the boot drive letter was incorrect and that windows could only start from a C drive.

Does anyone have any better solutions to making a VMachine of these hard drives? Either running in a desktop box or just from the hard drives?

I tried making a Macrium Reflect image and convert that to VHD, but the Player could not read the VHD and Convert would not convert as there was no .vmc file.

Thanks

Upgrading from free VM Player 5 to free VM player 6 and not loosing installed guest OS and apps

$

I am new to VM player.

I am using Win 7, VM Player 5 currently.

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on VM player 5.

Recently VMware player prompt me to upgrade to VMWare Player 6.

In the process of upgrading, it asked to delete/uninstall VMware Player 5.

I stopped the upgrade since I worried about losing all my installed items

as well as my other personal files on currently running VmWare Player 5.

How do I go about upgrading to VMWare's Player 6 and not lose ALL my work

inside existing VMWare Player 5?

I already disable Player 5 from prompting me to upgrade,

so how do I upgrade to Player 6 from within Player 5?

Is it possible to use more than one CPU core in Player 5 and Player 6 for the FREE version?

Thanks.

I am new to VM and was given the login info to one of my customers VM. He told me to download VM Player and provided me the login in server, user name and password.

I do not see where I can enter in this info to access their VM. How do I enter in this host info? Is VM Player the correct application that I need to use?

Thanks
