Installation error, MSI failed

I have downloaded and tried to install both the version 6 and version 5 VMWare player, but both times I get an error about a failed MSI file. VMWare Error.PNG

I get the same error if I "Run as Administrator" and I am logged in as Admin.

My system is Win7 Home 64-bit.

The downloaded file is "VMware-player-6.0.0-1395980".

Version 5 file was "VMware-player-5.0.2-1031769".

They both are installing to "Program Files (x86)/VMware/VMware Player" as default.

Anyone know why this is failing to install?

Boot from bootable LiveCD WITHOUT a preinstalled VM possible?

Assume I have a bootable LiveCD (as *.iso file).

In order to boot from this bootable LiveCD I can take an arbitrary, existing VM with an hostOS , then assign the *.iso as source for the CD/DVD drive in machine settings, then

change the boot sequence order in BIOS and start the VM.

Fine. This way I can boot the ISO.

But having to assign the ISO to a particular VM in hardwrae settings is unhandy, rather uncomfortable and not necessary.

Is there really no way to boot directly from a ISO independent from any existing VM?

Ideally I just want to drag&drop the *.iso file onto the Vmware player icon and VmPlayer will boot from it.

VMWare Player 5.0.2 won't start with Bluetooth Keyboard connected

Hi

I'm using VMware Player 5.0.2, on a Windows 8 host.

If I have a Bluetooth Keyboard connected to the host, no virtual machine will start. I get  the same error each time:

'cannot find a valid peer process to connect to'

But if I take the Bluetooth Keyboard away, then everything starts just fine.

Guest operating systems are Vista and Windows 2003. They are all the same in this regard - same error.

The error happens really quick - to the extend that the log files are not updated.

Latest version of VMware tools is on the guest.

Any help gratefully appreciated. I can't use the machines without a keyboard, and this is on my tablet computer which I need to be portable. Please note the issue here is with the keyboard, if there is no Bluetooth keyboard the machines act like they should.

TIA, Pete

VM can't connect to host using WiFi.

Im running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my host machine with the same running on my VM version 6.0.0 build 1295980. Both the Host and VM are are the same network, on the same homegroup, and can see each other in Network section of Windows.

With my Asus USB-AC53 wireless adapter connected to the host, the host can access the shared folders on the VM and other computers on the network. The VM can access other computer's files on the network except for the Host's.

With my Host hardwired to my router, the VM can access all computer's files, including the host.

How can I setup my VM so that when the Host is using Wifi, The VM can access the Host's files?

VMware Player 6 hangs on start-up (Windows 7) after Tools update

Hi - I'm using VMware Player under Windows 7, with Xubuntu as my guest OS.

I upgraded to v6 last week, and didn't have any problems. I was using it ok initially this morning, then upgraded to the latest VMplayer tools (as prompted). Looked like it went ok. I did some stuff in Windows, then went back to my VMplayer window - it was 'Not Responding' and went that sort of light grey colour.

Left it for a few minutes, but no change, so I used Windows Task manager to kill the task. Tried starting VMplayer again, but it won't start up at all - I just get the dialogue which would normally show me the list of OSs to choose from, but none of the text or graphics get displayed.

Task Manager shows the vmware-vmx.exe process as taking approx 100k memory, and hardly any CPU time.

Any suggestions? Reinstall player?

Cheers

John

VMware Player 6

I apologize for the very basic question, but I was unable to locate the answer myself.

Given that VMware Player is used for free for personal use, what are the differences between VMware Player 5 and VMware Player 6?

Which new features are introduced?

Is there any old OS or feature not supported anymore?

Regards

Marius

Cannot start copied VM after later version of VM had blue screen error STOP 0x0000005 - BIOS not fully ACPI compliant.

Hi all,

I am facing a blue screen issue that appears unrecoverable in my VM: at startup, the system prompts to start in normal/safe mode and whichever way ends up with the blue screen and restarts. This happened after I was prompted to install VMWare v 6.0 while the VM was starting up - I clicked yes and it suddenly shut down. From then on the blue screen error appeared.

When this happens, we usually download another version of the VM that is currently working on another station and it boots up straight away.

But when trying to bootup a working version, the blue screen error is still there. Usually, VM folders are standalone entities that can be exchanged and will work on other machines, but not this time - I tried with 2 other working versions of the same VM.

It looks like VMWare player is using some sort of cached files, reproducing the error no matter what version of the same VM is started.

So in essence, I would like a tip on :

- Either how to clear whatever is cached with VMWare player - reinstallation did not give a fresh start and the error was still there.

- Or how to solve that blue screen error - booting up from the disk did not succeed and I could not access the recovery console.

More information:

- Trigger: This error happened after prompted to install VMWare v 6 while machine was starting up. I clicked yes and the machine shut down suddenly.

- OS: windows XP pro - Other VMs using windows XP work on my machine - other projects' VMs.

- Host machine OS: Windows 7.

Logs analysis:

- According to the logs, the following files are missing: Windows XP Professional.vmx, Windows XP Professional.vmdk

- These files are actually there in the folder of all 3 machines I tried.

I have attached the error and the logs to this post.

Any tip would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Ben

When two or more guest VMs are running in full screen mode in VMplayer 4 we can switch between they with arrows on the pull down strip on high of screen.

In VMplayer 5 (and v6 now) I didn't find this arrays. Does exist the method of rapid switch between guest VMs in 5 and 6 versions of player in full screen mode?

Thanks.

Basic VM memory usage question

$

I've read a bunch of guides on VMware memory usage but still have a basic question.

I have a 8GB Linux host with a windows VM which has 4GB memory allocated. If I run up the VM, and run top on the Linux host, I see 4.0G has been allocated to it (RES shows 4.2g SHR shows 4.0G). This is before I open any programs in Windows.

So, does that mean that 4GB is not available to the Linux host as soon as the VM starts? I thought memory was only allocated when requested by the guest?

Thanks

Nick

I have used VM Player for a couple of years under W7 to host XP to run  Simian, an automated audio program, recently upgraded to W8 and it runs with garbled and "slow" audio. I have checked all the  usual suspects, host and XP audio drivers & reinstalled latestvVM Player and Simian but can't get it right. Other players, WMP and  Winamp, run normally. Anyone have any thoughts.

XP Pro install unable to format partition

I'm running VMware player on my Windows 7 Home Preimium x64 notebook.

After starting an XP installation on a new profile, the installation fails during formatting of the partition after 20% and reports that it's unable to format the volume.

The same XP disk on the same computer installed on my Linux boot worked fine..

Anyone know what would cause XP not to format properly under VMWare player in Windows 7?

Strange behavior between Player and Tools. Bug?

$

Hi,

I just installed VMware Player 6 on Windows 7. During installation, I choose to install it in a specific location (C:\Work\Tools) different from the default one.

I created a Debian 7.1 VM (jessie flavor) and played a little bit with it. I tried to install VMware Tools through the menu item (Player => Manage => Install VMware tools...)

It asked me to download them. After that, it asked me if I wanted to mount CD to install them. I agreed and nothing happened. I tried to mount manually without success.

I tried to stop my VM, to reboot my host, no result. Every attempt resulted in "no action"

I did some "linux.iso" finding on my computer and found it in default installation location of VMware player : C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player

I moved the file (and its .sig companion) to my install location and the "Install VMware tools action is now working well.

I think it's a bug.

Linux host, WinXP guest, host has 2 NICs, how to select which NIC to use?

$

I know this is something of a FAQ but several hours spent searching Google and these forums have given me nothing that works.

All solutions I have seen assume Windows as host and (something) as guest.

In my case the host is Linux (CentOS 6.4) and guest is Windows XP.

The host has two NICs, one on a 10.x.x.x network and the other on a 192.168.x.x network.  The virtual network adapter in the guest connects to the 10.x.x.x network.  I want it on the 192.168.x.x network.

I'd be happy if I added another virtual network adapter and one of them connected to each network, but both of them connect to the 10.x.x.x network (with different 10.x.x.x IP numbers).

The solutions I have seen indicate that under Virtual Machine Settings->Network Adapter->Network Connection, you click the "Configure Adapter" button and charge ahead from there.  That would be great except I have no "Configure Adapter" button or anything like that.  I do have an "Advanced" button but that just allows me to throttle incoming and outgoing traffic and set a new MAC address, that's all.

Since the host is Linux, I also have no equivalent to vmnetcfg.exe, at least none I can find.

So, where do I go from here?

VMware Player is version 6.0.0 (freshly upgraded from 5.0.2 this afternoon).  I tried it with version 5.0.2 and got the same thing.

Thanks...

Keyboard Not Working after VMWare Conversion

$

Hello,

I'm trying to run a VMware Conversion of an old laptop as a backup. I've run a VMware conversion and converted it to a vm 9 image file.

When it gets opened in VMware Player everything works except for the keyboard inputs. The only way I can type on the screen is using either the on screen keyboard or connecting in with TeamViewer.

Looking in Device Manager shows that the following error.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Has anyone come across this before and know if a solution?

Thanks

Peter Sheridan
