usb currently in use

Hi,

I have a virtual machine created from xp.

I started it in vmplayer 5 on my laptop ( it's an older one, so it has only usb2 ports ).

On the laptop I can passtrough a usb dongle needed in some software in the vm.

When I run it on a newer pc with usb3 ports, it's impossible to use the usb dongle in the vm.

It says the dongle is currently in use, altough it's not.

Can somebody give me advice ?

Copied VMware Player Virtual Machine From one PC and could not run it on a second PC

I am trying to copy a virtual machine from a PC in my living room to a PC in bedroom. I tried to copy the virtual machine folder within the virtual machine directory inside my documents folder from the living room PC to the same folder location in the bedrom PC, but this does not work. The virtual machine boots up as far as an initial bootloader (GRUB, it's a Linux VM) and it exits shortly after I select the OS to run from the bootloader within the VM.

On the living room PC I use to run the original virtual machine I am running:

  • vmware player 5.02
  • Windows 7 Professional -x64

On the bedroom PC, where I want to run the same virtual machine, I am running:

  • vmware player 6.0.0
  • Windows 7 Professional -x64

I have attached the log that is present with the virtual machine folder of the VM i'm trying to boot on the bedroom PC.

Can someone tell me why it exits when I try to run it on the second PC? Is there something that I am doing wrong in the process of copying the VM from the living room PC to the bedroom PC?

Thanks in advance for your help,

VM Player V 6.0 install problem

I have downloaded the Free VM Player for Windows package but it will install (Win 7 64-bit). I get an error when firing up the .exe file:-

VMInstallError.JPG

I have run the MD5 and SHA1 Checksums and the results are different to those published on the download page, indicating a corrupt image.

I have downloaded several times and colleagues have also tried with the same results. I have also downloaded from a different site, all to no avail.

Has anyone else seen this problem? I logged a support request with VMWare, but they were not too helpful.

Thanks in advance

VMware Player 6 - Automate the deployment and installation of the VMware Tools (Windows & Linux)

Hi, I'm working for a public school with VMware Player v6.0.0-1295980. I'm trying to figure out how to automate and force a silent installation of the VMware Tools on all clients (Windows and Linux) on a client. I already know about how to manually deploy it with the GUI, how to deploy it by command line, etc. But it's not very useful to me. Our students don't have administrator privilege on the VMs. In other words, I need to install the tools the same way that we can in Virtualbox, for example. Is it even possible? I need to make this a lot more transparent to the end user.

Thanks in advance for the help!

A hint of the VMware Player recommends to defragment the virtual disk by powering off the virtual machine, select the disk in the virtual machine settings, and then click defragment. In the virtual machine settings I can unfortunately not seewhere the disk can be selected. Where and how can I do this defragmentation of the virtual disk?

VMPlayer 6 Time And Date Independent Of Host?

Hello folks.  Is it in any way possible to have the VMWare Player 6.0 to keep it's own Time Zone, Date and Time, indipendent of the host's?

That is, if the host machine is 01:00pm, 10-09-2013, can I have the VMWare Player have a date in advance or past (like 6:15am, 04-10-2010, and to keep its date rebooting VMWare Player.  Am just curious.

Thanks.

Bug: wrong DNS server selected for NAT setup

Hi!

I encountered this problem with VMware Player 5.0.2 and 6.0.0.

See NAT: DNS returns bogus entries for gory details.

In short: With a VM that uses NAT networking (which is the default), VMware sometimes picks up and uses the wrong DNS server from the hosts network.

In my case, my host (Windows 8) is connected by LAN cable to a home router. Once in the past, I connected via WLAN to another network.

VMware Player uses the DNS settings from the WLAN, even if it is currently not connected.

Workaround: turn off automatic "Auto detect available DNS servers" in the NAT settings and enter the correct DNS server IP manually.

Details:

- my hosts LAN connection has the IP 192.168.222.117, the default gateway is 192.168.222.1 and DNS server also 192.168.222.1

- the now disconnected WLAN adapter had the IP 192.168.1.3, gateway 192.168.1.1 and name server 213.161.0.10 213.161.0.20

I used a network sniffer (WireShark) to find out that VMware player was sending DNS queries to 213.161.0.10.

Feel free to ask for any other information.

Regards,

David

W xp on VMware Player: How to sever the ties?

Questions regarding Player with W xp und XP-Mode (2 guests)

Hello all,

I had to install an old programming environment (PE) in Windows XP-Mode because it did no longer run on W7prof. In this installation the PE does not run as smooth as previously on a computer with W xp (host). I would like to verify now if the PE installed on W xp in a VMware Player would function better. Before I start with this task on a computer with W7prof 64 bit, I have the following questions:

1.) Is it possible to install the VMware Player on a computer where the Windows XP Mode has already been installed? (I would remove the XP-Mode only when I know that the PE runs smooth on the VMware Player.)

2.) If the answer to 1.) is yes: Is there some importance if during the installation of the VMware Player the Windows XP-Mode is active (open) or not?

3.) It is apparently possible to install W xp on the VMware Player by using the existing Windows XP-Mode. Is this possible if Windows XP-Mode is already installed?

4.) If the answer to 3.) is yes: Is there some importance if during the installation of W xp on the VMware Player the Windows XP-Mode is active (open) or not.

5.) Are there other important aspects to consider, or is there somewhere a step-by-step instruction?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Vmamqpd.service does not load in OpenSUSE 12.3

I am running VMPlayer 6.0 under 64 bit OpenSUSE 12.3. When I boot, I receive a message that systemctl failed to start vmamqpd. When I run systemctl status, I get the following message:

vmamqpd.service - LSB: This service starts and stops vmamqpd

          Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/vmamqpd)

          Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed, 2013-10-02 13:35:51 PDT; 40min ago

         Process: 747 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/vmamqpd start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

          CGroup: name=systemd:/system/vmamqpd.service

From what I can tell, the init.d script is looking for /var/run/vmamqpd.pid which doesn't exist. I'm not sure what this service does, nor how it is affecting my Windows XP virtual machine. So, two questions - what does vmamqpd do, and what can I do to make it load properly?

Thanks.

Vmware player and Shared folders

Hi,

I 'am trying to prevent users to access the shared folders because of security reasons. I ve tried two things that don't work :

1- I setting the .VMX file with this option isolation.tools.hgfs.disable = "TRUE" but each time the VM is runned the user can set the sharing folders option.

2 - I have configured the config.ini file and preferences.ini file with that parametter same things.

Is there a way on VMplayer  5 and 6 to restrict the shared folder to have it greyed ?

IS there a way to do it though registry ( WINDOWS 7) ?

Ps: I have also tried through VM tools to disable sharing options during the installation but same thing.

Please help

Installing W xp on the Player from the Recovery CD of a different computer?

Thanks to the help I received here W xp runs on the Player using the Windows XP Mode :-)

I am however wondering whether W xp could also have been installed on the VMware Player (or Workstation) from the file 60GT290E.ACR on the W xp Recovery CD of one of my previous computers, an Acer TM 290 E? The installation of this W xp would now obiously be on a different, newer computer. For your information: In addition to the mentioned recovery file the same CD contains also a sort of "general" file containing:

;Windows XP Home Edition Preload for Acer TM290E Series
;German Version 6.0.0
;
;RCD P/N: XX.T290E.60G
;
[Main]
OS=Windows XP Home Edition
Model=TM290E
Lang=German
Version=6.0.0

VMware Player Host Only Connection not working

I am running VMware Player v6 on a Windows 8 machine. I am attempting to run some windows servers and a windows 7 vm. However they will not connect to each other. They wont even connect to my host machine. I can force them to connect to my host with NAT or Bridged connections, but i have to manually configure an IP address that matches the network my host machine is connected to. I need them to connect to each other with host only because one of my servers is for DHCP. Any advice to resolve this would be appreciated. Thanks

W xp on Player: How to change Keyboard Driver?

$

0

I installed W xp on the Player and it appears to function well, except that using the keyboard is now a little bit quirky. When installing W xp the procedure suggested to install the German keyboard. This was almost, but unfortunately not quite correct. The installed driver relates to this keyboard here https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/German/Appendices/Keyboard Note the remark below the figure: "German and Austrian keyboard layout, but remember that Switzerland does not use this layout." My computer does acually have this "odd" one, namely the Swiss-German keyboard as shown here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Swiss.svg  Do I have chance to get finally a correct driver working?

FYI: Looking at the installed keyboard drivers in my W7prof shows:

i8042prt.sys

kbdclass.sys

VMkbd.sys

I presume that the last two drivers where added during the Player installation.

Unrecoverable error (svga)

$

Hi folks

I'm experiencing some problems with my VMs. For testing purposes of my application (Modify images with Pixelshaders) I've set up a Vista, a Win7, and Win8 VM. But as soon as i launch my app, VMware Player crashes with an unrecoverable error (svga). See attached image.

Unrecoverable error (svga)

Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occured.

My host system: Windows 7 x64

Videocard. Nvidia Quadro FX580

Driver: latest recommended Nvidia driver (320.92)

I can disable graphic acceleration in VM settings for solving the issue, but this way I loose all my graphic capabilities inside the VM.

On other hardware (ATI graphics) everything works fine, so I suppose it's a Nvidia specific issue.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Regards

Dani
