VMs lose path to mapped drive

0
0

We are having an issue with our virtual machines losing access to, or suffering severe lag to, a mapped drive. It seems very random and we have no lead as to whether this is software or hardware related. I'll give a quick breakdown of the hardware and the config

SuperMicro X9DRH-7TF motherboard w/LSI 2208 SAS/SATA RAID controller onboard

96GB RDIMM 1600

2-Xeon E5-2690 processors

1-SanDisk Extreme SSD 240GB (attached to non RAID SATA port)-for OS (C:)

6-SanDisk Extreme SSD 480GB (attached to LSI controller-RAID 5)-for data (X:)

Host OS-Windows 7 Pro

24 VMs, using VMware Player Plus

Guest OS 1-5: Windows 7

Guest OS 6-24: Windows 8.1

Each VM has 3GB RAM allocated

The VMs all reside on the X drive and have a mapped network drive to X as they all need access to the same data set. We are running numerical modeling simulation software on each VM. Every once in awhile the VMs cannot access the X drive, or access is very slow. When this is happening even the host OS has slow access to the drive. We have had some issues with the Win8.1 VMs keeping a temporary lock on some of the files, which goes away after a few hours, not allowing moving or renaming. We didn't have the mapped drive issues when we tested with 24 VMs all running Win7. Anyone else had similar issues? Is this related Windows 8??

Install/Uninstall failure

My old installation of Vmware Player was working fine, UNTIL I opted to allow the upgrade to the latest version today.

It downloaded the installation file and started the process by saying it had to remove the old version first.  Eventually, I got an error message that the MSI failed.  Neither log file was created.

I tried to uninstall it using the add/remove programs under Windows and it also ended by saying that the MSI had failed.  Again, here were no logs created.

I am now left with no working copy of Vmware Player and no idea how to clean out the old to get a new installation to complete..

Cannot assign available PCI slot to vmci0. There are no more PCI slots available in the virtual machine. Please remove some devices from the virtual machine.

Linux Guest does not start on Windows 8.1

Hi!

I have a fresh Windows 8.1 installation (not Pro) as a host OS. When I start my Linux Guest (64 Bit Xubuntu), I just get a flat error message saying "internal error".

Sometimes, and I haven't been able to find a pattern yet, it comes back with "The virtual machine is busy" and another dialog in the back which says "VMWare Player Unrecoverable error: (vmplayer). Exception 0xc0000005 (Access Violation) has occurred".

In both cases, there is basically no other option than to acknowledge the error dialogs which will close the VM window.

The log files are not showing anything obvious. In both cases, I am seeing these errors in the log file:

- CDS error: Bulletin file C:\Users\Matthias\AppData\Local\Temp\cdstmp_4516_0 version 3.2.0 is not valid (min: 3.5.0, max: 3.5.0)

- VmdbPipeStreamsOvlError Couldn't read: (109) The pipe has been ended.

Aside from that I have no idea what these problems are, it is also hard to tell if this is the effect or the cause.

There are other warnings but they don't read as if they are causing the problem.

I have attached two log files, one for each of the errors I am seeing. Any idea or suggestion is greatly appreciated, I am running out of ideas what could cause this!

Thanks.

Hi all,

I have here a Krystalboard which was used in a PC running under XP pro for the soundediting tool MicroEditor from MTU.

The board as a long PCI card.

The card did run on an pc with xp pro.

CD+G Karaoke Player Software | Vocal Remover | Rip-Burn CDG Discs | Create-Copy-Play Karaoke

Microeditor Digital Audio Editing Software Features

The card is no more supported but the tool is so good that I am (was) still using from time to time.

Now I did setup in a new pc running win7 a VMware Player that emulates a XP pro.

I have now the problem, that I cannot provide the guest the installed Krystalboard.

Win7 shows the board on a PCI slot.

It is shown as Mulitmediacard with a yellow questionmark.

This was also the case under XP pro.

Booting xp it did load a driver and from there on it could be used. (in system.ini)

Does somebod has an idea how I should setup the VMware Player that he can provide to the xp that PCI card?

The VMware Player shows me other installed soundcards but not the Krystalboard!

Thanks for a hint!

Best regards

Armin

linux guest does not boot, error serial overrun

hi all,

I am in need of help. I cannot start my virtual machine anymore, even though it has been working fine since months.

vmware Player version: 6.0.1 build-1379776

Host: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 4 GB, 64 bit OS.

Guest: Ubuntu 12.04, vmware-tools installed

Ubuntu guest boot hangs. The vmware.log file repeats the following lines:

serial0: Failed to enforce the noRxLoss option: an overrun occurred while the virtual UART was in loopback mode.

serial0: Overrun

I followed this suggestion by continuum:

Re: Terrible response for opensuse guest

I set serial0.present = "false" in Ubuntu-virtual-machine.vmx but it does not help. The only difference is that now I only get the second error line above, not both.

I found this, again by continuum, to disable Thinprint

https://communities.vmware.com/message/1877185#1877185

but I did not do it, since the only instructions I found for doing that were for another VM

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2003626

I attach a log.

Many thanks in advance!

I added a new drive (USB Drive) as another hard drive to a virtual Linux (64-bit) system. Now I want to remove it, but I cannot - the remove button is not enabled in the Virtual Machine Settings. How do I remove it?

graphic adapter

hi all,

should i be able to see my graphic card as the graphic adapter in the guest system?

my host is win 8.1, guest is debian, and graphic adapter is a Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X.

now in the guest system (debian) if i do:  $ lspci -v

i get:

00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller: VMware SVGA II Adapter (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

  Subsystem: VMware SVGA II Adapter

Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 16

  I/O ports at 1070 [size=16]

  Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]

  Memory at fe000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8M]

[virtual] Expansion ROM at 20000000 [disabled] [size=32K]

  Capabilities: <access denied>

  Kernel driver in use: vmwgfx

is this the graphic adapter as the guest system sees it?

thx for ur time and apologies if my question is nonsense or this is not the right forum for the question.

Upgrade failed VM Player 3.x to 6.x

0
0

Hello VM Community!

Please excuse my confusion and if I am posting this in the wrong spot. I've had a heck of a time trying to find a group like that could offer some insight. Thanks for any direction you might be able to offer.

My issue is I have been successfully been using VM Player 3.x to power WinXP Pro under a Win7x64 machine for about 3 years now. Suddenly the USB stopped working in VM Player and the VMWare knowledge base said the first step should be to upgrade my version of VM Player. From within Player, I choose the "check for software updates" under the Help menu and started the upgrade process. It said to reboot my physical computer and I did so. When it restarted it said there was an error and Windows closed the VM Player setup process. Now I'm stuck without Player and most importantly XP! XP is vital to run a couple programs. Is there a way to repair/restart the nearly completed upgrade of Player?

If not, then the next step seems it would be to re-install the 6.x version of Player. But I'm unclear if I do so, will my installation of XP Pro still be there or will a clean install erase that? I really don't want to lose XP and the data installed. The data IS backed up, but I'd rather not have to go through the entire process again of installing everything fresh.

Any suggestions? Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

VMWare Player installed but cannot see/find/create snapshots?

Hey all,

I have vmware player installed,  I thought it was meant to have the ability to create snapshots but i cant see it in the options.  Is there something else i need to add?

Cheers,

VMware Player, really poor performance.

Hello there,

I am getting really bad, unusable performance with any VMware client. I have tried combinations of:

VMware Player and VMware 10.

Operating Systems XP, Win 7,Linux Mint, among others.

All Guest VM's run incredibly Slow. Some of the issues include:

Very slow/laggy mouse movement

Takes at least 60 seconds for firefox, or any program to open.

Once a program is opened, the lag makes it just unusable.

I have tried installing the Guest VM to different drives, including a SSD drive.

I have tried resolutions from 800x600 up to Full Screen.

I have downloaded and installed the latest VMware tools.

I have searched and tried every possible solution i have found on google for the last 2 weeks.

I have checked the Bios to make sure Virtualization is on.

I have tried varying the amounts of Ram, and CPU's available to the Guest VM.

Current Specs:

i7 2600k

32g mem

SSD and a couple WD black 1tb drives

XFX 7950 DD Black Edition

I am at a loss. If anyone has any ideas what else i could check it would be greatly appreciated.

Configure my image in the LAN - configure networking

0

I have windows 7 laptop connected to LAN.
In this computer I am running Image of another windows 7 using VMWare player.
My primary laptop IP is: 100.100.100.2 and I wish to set the image to be with ip: 100.100.100.3, I can achieve this only by configuring the network connection (in the image) to be bridged.
The problem is:
When I ping my laptop/computer in the LAN from the image - i get reply
When I ping the image from my laptop or other computer within the LAN - i dont get reply

How can this connection be both sides ? since i want the image to host run a service that all computers in the network can connect..

Thanks!

Firewall of both windows - is down.

Maybe I need to configure something in the VMware NetworkAdapter VMnet1/VMnet8 in the host computer ?

New faster HDD, now Guest WinXP Pro sluggish under Host Win7 64bit

0

Glad to have found this forum.

I cloned my 5400RPM hard drive to a 7200RPM and used the restore partition to restore to factory state. I installed most of the updates to Win7 Home Premium 64 bit before installing VM Player 6.0.1. Prior to the clone, on the 5400RPM drive (both drives are 500GB), I was using VM Player 3.x (I forget which 3.x version I had installed) with the exact same installation of WinXP Pro 32 bit as the guest. On that setup, I had no sluggishness, it was very snappy in response. My system specs are below, nothing has changed except for a faster HDD, newer version of VM Player and fresh OS install. Win7 is super snappy now, due to a fresh install. I've searched the KB here and so far haven't found anything to point me in the direction of a solution. I'll keep looking but was hoping someone here knows an easy solution!

BTW, the sluggishness is not due to using any power hungry apps in the guest XP Pro. The sluggishness is very obvious even just double clicking on a folder on the desktop...there is anywhere from a 5 to 20 second delay before the folder will be open and visible. However, clicking on the Start button is not sluggish, but clicking on anything else within the Start menu is. Strange. I use a billing software (that won't run in Win7, hence the VM) and once in the software, it is fairly snappy, but other basic OS functions that are accessing the (virtual) hard drive are quite slow. Could there be some sort of incompatibility issue in my 7200rpm drive that didn't exist in my 5400rpm? Both drives are made by Hitachi.

Acer laptop 5552-5898

AMD Phenom II N830 / 2.1 GHz

Thanks for any ideas

o Minimal download size

o ESX* Compatible with SCSI vdisks - Plase Test!

o Note: ESXi users will probably have to edit the /etc/network/interfaces after 1st boot.

o Feature: Squid3 (and this release in general) are notably faster than previous releases.

o  Takes minimal resources to run -- 128MB RAM alloc, 2 GB Growable Disk ( +4GB 2nd disk on sdb1, INCLUDED! ++ Pre-formatted for ext4 )

    • ROOT SSH logins are DENIED, out of the box -- login as " user " instead and SUDO or SU from there

    • Vmware Tools is NOT installed, for space reasons.

    • NO FIREWALL rules

    • NO GUI

o  Bridged networking is used by default, and the VM is expecting to  grab a  DHCP address on bootup.  IPV6 support has again been left  Enabled in this release.

(Static MAC address assigned in VMX file - should Just Work anywhere)

o Default STATIC IP: 10.0.244.250

+ This can be changed by editing " /etc/network/interfaces " and then issuing ' /etc/init.d/networking restart '.

    • Note, this is a TESTING release - PLEASE let me know if there are any bugs!

    • I have finally been able to test Logfile rotation on ESXi - works Ok out of the box

    • IMPORTANT   NOTE: When powering on the VM, tell Vmware you MOVED IT - not Copied  it  -- this may eliminate the hassle that some users have been seeing   with " NIC creep ", where eth0 migrates to eth1 ;-)

      • DISCLAIMER *** - Run at your own risk, default build only includes SSH ( port 22 ) and Squid ( 10.0.244.250, port 3128 )

      • Not Responsible if this Virtual Appliance wows your ponycatbirdlizardbisongoldfish, and makes it run around in excitement! ***

    • Ctrl-Alt-Del has been set to REBOOT the VM for this release. (Changed from previous version.)

Features:

Alt-F5: Bandwidth monitor, updates every (5) sec ( Increased from V4 to save CPU interrupts )

Alt-F9: " Top " display, slightly customized

* Easter egg(s) and some minor speed tweaks and fixes

--Suggested additional software: (' apt-get update; apt-get install pkgname ')

o webmin -- For system configuration (Browser-based config: https://10.0.244.250:10000 )

o webmin-squid

o calamaris -- Log analyzer

o sarg -- Squid analysis report generator

o webmin-sarg

o srg -- Detailed log analysis for squid

o squid-cgi -- Cache manager interface

==============================

Quick instructions (HOWTO):

- Fire up the VM

- Hit Alt-F5 and you can watch the bandwidth monitor

Hit Alt+F1, LOGIN AS root and ** CHANGE THE PASSWORDS!! 1st thing **

Client-side instructions:

- Set ALL of your browser's Cache setting really low, like to 5-8 MB - and Delete it!  Huge disk space savings!

-  Point your browser's Proxy setting to the VM's IP address ( default  10.0.244.250 , port 3128 ) - you can point it to the DHCP address for  fast/temporary testing (issue ' ifconfig ' at the root or User prompt to  see the squid VM's DHCP IP address) or change it to whatever matches  your home network. I put it as a Class A address by default so it  matches my home setup and ((hopefully)) shouldn't interfere with other  setups.

--Note  that this is a security feature as well.  I have my home net setup as a  Class A with all-static IPs, and everybody (browsers, Win updates, and apt-get) talks  to Squid.  Squid is usually the only box that has a DHCP address from  the router so it can talk to the Internet.

--  Now here's the neat thing - multiple PCs on your network can have  *multiple browsers* - Firefox, Chrome, Opera, IE, Safari, Lynx, etc all  pointing to the Squid proxy, and it will cache and filter ( ad- and some  porn-sites, user definable ) requests for *everybody.*

--  You know how AdBlock Plus works in Firefox?  Squid does something very  similar, only it does it for ANY browser.  Somebody loads the Yahoo  website? Well now you'll get it to load -faster- for you because it will  be pulled from the Squid cache.  Virus updates, ad-aware, apt-get and  Windows updates should also be faster because they won't have to be  downloaded from the Web multiple times.  ( And yes, pretty much all of  my physical PCs, laptops, and VMs go through my Squid proxy - I'm  "eating my own dog food" here. )

- ACL / file extension filtering:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/squid-content-filter-block-files/

--  There are a *LOT* of config file options; I've done the heavy lifting  and marked up /etc/squid.conf with " xxx " marks wherever things have  been changed, and it should Just Work out of the box.  The maximum  filesize that will get stored in-cache is 20MB, set by me.  If you're a  tweaker though, you can set it up to pretty much store and filter  whatever you want. ( Hint: as root, edit the following in /etc/squid3:  adsblock.txt, porn.txt, notporn.txt -- and then issue ' squiderr ' )

NOTE: For this release, the /etc/squid3/squid.conf file has been drastically reduced in size (most of the in-file documentation is gone) but you can still search for "xxx" and especially "EDIT ME" strings for important values that may need to be changed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For this release, Squid is using the "network lockdown" settings - so it may not work "out of the box" like previous versions did.  Edit /etc/squid3/squid.conf and change the network ACLs to match your setup, then issue ' squiderr '.

--  If you are really anticipating a lot of usage, you should go ahead and  bump up the settings - give the VM 256 MB RAM or more, change /etc/squid3/squid.conf for extra memory and cache space.  You may also need to possibly  tweak some other settings.  Repeat as needed - you can always replace  the 2nd vdisk with a bigger one, or add more disks.

NOTE: ' squid  -kshutdown; sleep 30; squid -z; squid ' will activate the extra disk  space once you are done editing the config file.

-->  Look in /etc/squid3 dir for ad-blocking settings, and don't forget to '  squid -kreconfigure ' ( or ' squiderr ' ) if you change things...

--  Note for people who like SANE text editors, that don't remind you of  EDLIN - I've included Joe (' jstar ', for those of us who actually miss  WordStar), and Midnight Commander, which comes with ' mcedit ' -- you're  NOT limited to VI !!!  The nano editor is installed as well, if you're used to it.

Have fun...

/ Post bug reports - If I don't hear anything for (2) weeks, consider it a full release!

----------------------------

--Things to do every so often to keep the appliance up to date:

o It's a good idea to login as " root " once a month or so and run the ' updt ' script.  This will update installed packages and apply security updates.

Running ' updt ' will also sync up the VM's time/date.

o Check your logs with ' mc /var/log ' and then use F3 to view the log files

o Check free disk space with ' df -h '

o Check RAM free and swapfile usage with ' free '

- Hit Alt-F9 and you can see your uptime with the running " top " virtual console

--I  have had uptimes in excess of 100 days easily with Squid V6 running on  ESXi; you just power it on, and it should pretty much take care of  itself.    However, make sure you limit Squid's memory so the OOM-killer doesn't get you.

./. If you have appreciated my response, please remember to apply Helpful/Correct points. TIA

* Note: This VM was built and customized from the following JEOS skeleton appliance - my thanks to the developers:
