Unable to play OVA file using Player 5.0.

Hi,

When I try to open the OVA file (which was generated from .OVF, with version 1.0) using VMWare Player 5.0.0, it's giving following error.

'Failed to open virtual machine: Failed to open OVF descriptor.'

When I used the corresponding  .OVF with version 1.0 file, it loaded properly. Does Player supports OVA files ?

Thanks in advance.

Player on Dell Latitude D620

Hello,

I just got a Dell Latitude D620 laptop for travel.  It has an Intel core Duo processor, porcessor

ID 06E8.  VMware player claims this CPU is not 64-bit compatible, and the only player

version that would install is 3.1.6 (build-744570)  Versions 4 and 5 would not install.

I am using the Ubuntu 10.04 OS.

So, I installed Player 3.1.6 and copied the vmx and vmdk files from my desktop system

(which is using Workstation 6.0.5 build-109488) and got the following message when

I tried to start that virtual machine :

"The selected virtual disk is incompatible with this workstation 4.x virtual machine

adding this disk would make this virtual machine incompatible with older

vmware products."

So, can anybody suggest what to do?  I really don't want to spend a lot of money

or effort on something that I probably won't use a lot.  So, is this lack of 64-bit

support a mistake/incompatibility, or are all the new VMware products not usable

on a range of not-really-that-old laptops?  Is there a version of player that will

run on the D620 laptop and run the Workstation 6.x virtual machines?

The converter executable is not present in the player install, as far as I can tell.

Thanks much in advance,

Jon

How to create a "template" from RHEL6 system?

$

Please excuse my question as I am a complete newbee to virtualazation as I have been living under a rock for the last couple of years

But I need to know how to create a "template" (I am not even sure what a template is) from a RHEL6 64bit system and use this template

to create a VM that can be run in VMPlayer.  How would I proceed? I have root access to the RHEL6 system and very limited access

to vSphere (which is why I want to move the RHEL6 system to my VMplayer on my Desktop).

Thanks!

Can't even install

Apparently my computer doesn't meet requirements. Here's a list of my specs:

  • OS Name     Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Version     5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
  • OS Manufacturer     Microsoft Corporation
  • System Name     D5QRBQK1
  • System Manufacturer     Dell Inc.
  • System Model     Inspiron 1011
  • System Type     X86-based PC
  • Processor     x86 Family 6 Model 28 Stepping 2 GenuineIntel ~1596 Mhz
  • BIOS Version/Date     Dell Inc. A06, 7/29/2009
  • SMBIOS Version     2.5
  • Windows Directory     C:\WINDOWS
  • System Directory     C:\WINDOWS\system32
  • Boot Device     \Device\HarddiskVolume2
  • Locale     United States
  • Hardware Abstraction Layer     Version = "5.1.2600.5574 (xpsp_sp3_gdr.080402-1256)"
  • User Name     D5QRBQK1\Devon
  • Time Zone     Eastern Daylight Time
  • Total Physical Memory     1,024.00 MB
  • Available Physical Memory     108.18 MB
  • Total Virtual Memory     2.00 GB
  • Available Virtual Memory     1.96 GB
  • Page File Space     2.38 GB
  • Page File     C:\pagefile.sys

Now, I would think with these specs, I should install, but I suspect it's not installing because I have Service Pack 3. What should I do?

VMware Player 5: license expired...

As a part of the VMware Fusion 5 Professional trial, there is also the possiblity of inserting the trial serial number into VMware Player (thus allowing it for commercial use): out of curiosity (I don't need commercial use of Player), I tried this, about a month ago...

The problem is that now VMware Player (nested inside a Fusion Windows 7 VM, primarily to run XP Mode), in the title bar, says that the evaluation period is expired; while I would obviously rather prefer that it returned to the original behaviour, i.e., where it says that it is only for non-commercial use, in the title bar.

In the meantime, I also purchased Fusion 5 in the normal, boxed version (currently, I don't need the pro features).

So, is there some (hidden?) setting(s) in Windows 7 that can restore the "for non-commercial use" text in the Player title bar (instead of having "expired")...?

In OS X, AFAIK, the licensing information is in "/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion": but in Windows 7... where is it?

Would uninstalling and reinstalling Player fix the problem?

Network latency with VMware Player on 2nd and 3rd IP addresses

Dear all,

Thanks to André and Woody, I have now 3 IP addresses on my VM Windows Server 2008 R2 running on VMware Player.

I've noticed that 2 of the 3 networks have real long latency, making TimeOut in Software I used.

I've tried to do a SFTP between the host and the VM, and it takes really a long time to do the FTP: when I switch to the 3rd IP address (VMNet0), I don't have any problems.

The PING to all the IP adresses is fine.

My questions:

+ do you know if there are any limitations with VMware Player with Network configuration?

+ If I switch to VMWare Workstation, does it solve the problem? I mean, network configuration is better in VMWare Workstation?

+ any idea to solve the problem?

Thanks for your help,

Yoann

want to export VM to older laptop

Let me try again, maybe I can better explain what I'm trying to do.

I have VMware Workstation 6.0.5 on my desktop, and wanted to export the VM to a laptop for travel.

I figured this is exactly what player is for.  Because this laptop (Dell Latitude D620) doesn't have

a processor with VMX extensions, it seems the latest Player that will run is 3.1.6

I got Player 3.1.6 to install fine, but when I try to start the VM exported from my desktop, it

says "the selected virtual disk is incompatible with this workstation 4.x virtual machine.

adding this virtual machine would make this virtual machine incompatible with older

VMware products."

I tried installing Workstation 6.0.5, but got an error when it tried to build the kernel modules.

My kernel is 2.6.32-122-rtai.

Can anybody suggest how to export a VM to a laptop with no vmx extensions, and hopefully

without having to buy a full Workstation license?  The laptop processor reports

Intel T2300 CPU, family 6, model 14, in /proc/cpuinfo, if that helps.

Thanks much in advance,

Jon

Hello,

I use several computers that each have vmware player installed on them. I would like to create a virtual machine that I can store on a USB stick, so that I can use this particular machine from any of my computers. I cannot find any guide that explains how this can be arranged. Is it even possible? If it is, will someone please explain how?

Thank you.

VM - Lockdown the host hardware

Hi everybody!
I'm looking for a way to lock a VM to run in just one physical PC. In a nutshell: I'm trying to create a VM that can be capable to prevent copy or move to other physical machine.
Lock the VM to run in a specific hardware (associating with HD serial number or other form more efficient by example).
Can anyone help me with this?

Since now, thanks a lot.

Eduardo

Using VMWare Player 4.0.2 on Win7 Pro x64. Trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit in the VM. Installation goes fine, but on bootup I get this message:

The default sound device cannot be opened: A deviceID has been used that is out of range for your system. Sound will be disconnected.

The same problem occurs if I install the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. How can I fix this?

Connecting (any) USB 3 devices to a guest: problems

$

Hello!

I found many information about using USB in a guest, some of which misleading, and my test now failing, so.. here is my setup and what I want to do:

Win 7 64bit host, Win 8 64bit guest. I have a framegrabber USB 3 module, and later I also want to connect different USB 3 devices. I think, they are going to use isochronous mode (high data rates), if that makes a difference. Standard devices, like USB 2 HD (but on different HW) works without any problems.

I tried several different USB 3 extension cards (since the PC does not have USB 3 onboard), and only an Asus card with a NEC chip seems to be.. kind of supported: on all other systems, I cannot disconnect the device from the host in order to connect it to the guest (I get an error message from vmware).

Also, when using the Asus extension card (the only one, that kind of works), in the Windows 8 guest I get an error that the USB device could not be recognized, even though i did install the drivers.

So.. does USB (3) only work for certain devices as well as certain controllers? Is there a list?

Is this to be expected? How good/compatible is the USB (3) support? And what other solutions are around that would support this better? Does tier-0 virtualization like done by Hyper-V (or similar vmware products?) improve anything? Does Windows 8 as a host improve anything?

I am grateful for any hints/tips/experiences.

Best regards,

Hi,

I am new to vmware player and can not establish a connection to the internet although I was able to connect before this for weeks.  I have had problems with re-activating windows xp on my real pc and it has upset alot of setting/configs including audio, keyboard, ICQ (instant messaging) and vmware player connection on my real pc.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

How to use raw disk with vmware player 5.0?

Hi!

I have nealy none experience with vmware, so perhaps it's a really stupid question, but I've been searching and trying now for some hours und didn't reach anything ...

On my system I have

1) "Win 7 old" partition on a harddisk

2) "Win 7 SSD" partion on a SSD

They are configured as dual boot with windows 7 boot manager.

Just für convenience during migration to the "new" system, I'd like to boot "Win 7 old" as a VM-guest in "Win 7 SSD" as a host.

I found "use a physical partion as a raw disk", but wizard for new vm in the player doesn't give me the option to use a raw disk neither to "add an addional disk" in hardware settings.

Is ist no a feature of "vmware player"? Do I need "workstation"?

Any other advice?

Thanks a lot in advance

kernel headers 3.5.5-2.fc17.x8664 not found

Fresh install of vmplayer 5.0.0 build-812388 on fedora 17_x64.  I get the 'kernel headers not found' error when launching vmplayer.  Kernel headers are installed.  I have tried browsing to several folders: /usr/src/kernels/3.5.5-2.fc17.x86_64, /usr/src/kernels/3.5.5-2.fc17.x86_64/include, /usr/include/linux, /lib/modules/3.5.5-2.fc17.x86_64/kernel/drivers and more.  Every time I get the error "C header files matching your running kernel were not found."

uname -a confirms that the system is running 3.5.5-2.fc17.x86_64.

I have installed kernel-headers, kernel-devel and kernel-tools.

What am I missing here?
