Player 5 : host with two nic & two VM

$

Hi,

one of the best new features in Player 5 is:

"Previously, the standalone version of VMware Player did not give users a  way to select what adapter would be used for a virtual machine. With standalone VMware Player, from the menu bar, you can now select  VM  > Settings > Network, and use the button next to "Bridged" that  says "Configure Adapters."

Now, my problem is:

i have a host server with two nics:

Network A (vlan A)

&

Network B (vlan B)

Besides, i have inside the host two VM:

- The first VM must work only with Network A - bridged

- The second VM must work only with Network B - bridged

If i select "Configure Adapters" in VM configuration of the FIRST VM and i select only the correspondant NIC for "Network A" the same configuration will reflect also into the SECOND VM.

Is is possibile to split this kind of configuration, so i can configure every VM to choose only one host NIC ?

This is to avoid too much trash broadcast....

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards.

Beppe

How to run VM created on VMWare Player 5 on VMWare Player 3?

How to run VM created on VMWare Player 5 on VMWare Player 3? It is possible?

I'm asking for that because I would like to use Player 5 on my home computer, but if I copy VMs and I want to use them on Player 3 at school or other place - I can't. Is there any solution or trick to do that? Or the only one solution is using VMWare Player 3?

I thought about installing Player 3 and Player 5 on my computer, because in this way I could use the first one for VMs that I'll copy and second one for my own purposes.

VMware Player and snapshots

Hi,

I'm using with much satisfaction VMware Player, but I suffer the lack of availability of the "snapshots" feature.

I know I could buy the VMware Workstation but it has too many other features (and is expensive, given those features) that I don't need.

Is there some other intermediate version having this functionality ?

VMware Fusion 5 seems appropriate to me, but it is unclear if it can be run on a Windows machine (it seems appropriate for a Mac).

Thanks.

How to mount a DvD (ubuntu)

I know that this question is probably related to my incopidence incisde of ubunut/linux/unix but for the life of me I can't get my DvD from my physical drive to appear in my vm.. I've right clicked on the dvd icon, changed settings so the selected drive is the drive that I am inserting my dvd into and ive changed it to connect on power on, I reset the vm and the virtual os and when I get back in... Still no dvd.. I've never even used a dvd before inside of ubuntu, so theres a chance I'm just retarted and can't find it.. But when I looked up how to use a dvd in ubunutu/linux I found no instructions on it, thus leaving me to believe it must been intuitive to use, as in, I shoiuld open the file brower and see it as a tab to the side.. But I can't see it..

I can't believe using a dvd has to be this freakin complicated -.-

any ideas? you will more than likely just have to tell me how to use a dvd inside of linux cus I'm almost 100% sure my vmplayer is setup

I tested this on several different platforms (Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 7 32-bit, etc.) and all gave the exact same response.

I am able to install Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 only if I bypass the easy install process (install OS at a later time).

Is this an issue with VMware Player 3.16 or Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.1?

I would like to know more about VMWare Player, and other important info as well

I would like to know about VMWare Player. First of all, I would like to know about the bios setup in VMWare. Now what I want to know is if the bios acts the same as the actual bios setup in my computer. And also, there is a Wake on Lan option in the VMWare player bios setup. Now does this really work and wake up other computers when they are off or in standby? That is what I really want to know from you. And I also would like to know on what kind of computer manufacturers work with my VMWare player.
Does HP, Dell, Acer, Asus and all the rest of the companies work together. Like lets say that I downloaded Windows 7 and put in my VMWare player, and then I went to my system properties, what would the computer manufacturers be? Like what would it say? Well for my computer I have an Acer Aspire 5733z model notebook. Now lets say that I downloaded a driver, like a lan card adapter for a Dell Optiplex computer. Would I be able to download that driver on my VMWare Player? Because I know that VM Player is virtual, and it is not my actual computer, which is my Acer Aspire 5733z. It is just powered by VM Ware. You know what I am saying?
Now for example, my Dad at work has a Dell Inspiron mini netbook, which is a 1012 model. And he has a Dell wireless lan card in his computer at work. And I also installed Team Viewer on his netbook computer. Now like every time he goes home and leaves work, he shuts down his computer, and his Team Viewer ID number goes away. And I do not like that at all when he shuts down his computer. Because once, it is shut down, I cannot make his ID number come back online, because his computer is off at work.
Now what I was wondering was does the Dell wireless lan card have Wake on Lan settings on it in the properties of the network adapter? Because I tried everything to wake up and turn on his computer, but nothing just would work for me. By the way, he is not on a Lan, he is using a wireless connection, from a Dell wireless lan card, itself in his Dell Inspiron 1012 mini netbook computer.
Now I would really like to know on how to wake his computer up, if it is possible. So just let me know on how to do this for me, step-by-step. All righty? And I would think that VMWare player works just like an actual computer with the bios setup, and everything. And if I download a certain driver, that should work too, I am assuming. So just let me know if this process will work. So that is that part.
Now the next part I would like to know from you, is I want to get some Mac addresses from certain people. Like because I have a lot of friends, and they need some help on various things on how to troubleshoot issues on their computers. And for this I would need to use Remote Desktop. But lets say that their computer was off, and not turned on, and I needed to turn it on. Could I turn on their computer remotely with their mac address if I knew it? But I am assuming that I can turn on any computer if I had their mac address.
And I do not have a Wake on Lan option in my actual real bios setup. So for that, I would have to enable the Wake on Lan in my VMWare player bios setup. The VMWare bios setup is by American Megatrends. So that should work. But mainly what I am saying here is that, I would like to know on how to get someone's mac address, by using an IP scanner, or a mac address scanner. Well anyway, sorry for the long letter. So please get back to me ASAP on this, it is very important to me as well. And just explain to me on how this all works. I will be waiting for my response from you. So thank you very much!

How to gain administrator access on Win Server 2008?

I would like to gain administrator access to a machine which runs Windows Server 2008.  I had joined the machine to a domain which re-configured administrator rights, and, does not give me access to the machine with administrator rights.  However I need to re-gain administrator access to this virtual machine.

In order to do this there is an option for which I need to have a boot floppy a a virtual Floppy Drive.  The only problem is that I do not have an actual floppy drive, so how do I create a floppy drive image, which allows me to gain administrator access to the virtual machine.

Hello all.  I have enabled shared folders in player and pointed to a relevant folder on my host Windows machine.  However, although I should now see the volume mounted at /mnt/hgfs, nothing shows up.  I have done this as root as well as standard users.

Can anyone tell me what on earth is wrong?

Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Can't get a Windows XP Virtual Player to show host printer

Using version 4.0.1 build, I can't get my Brother printer to show up. It does work perfect on the host (Windows 7 64bit), and oddly enough it does appear if you pull down Virtual Machine/Removable Devices.

So, it is there - but it is not in the selectable list of any appication, and its not in the Windows XP "Printer and Faxes" panel.

I have deleted the Printer in the Virtual Machine Settiings dialog, and put it back in with the Add - but this didn't make any difference.

Anyone know how to fix this?

VM Player (4 &5) does not allow me to change monitor settings

I have a notebook that I have an external monitor connected to. It is a Lenovo IdeaPad computer.

Anyway, the external monitor will allow me to change it with no problem when using it from the host comptuter (Windows 7). But, when I use VM Player with XP, the display settings are locked and I can't make any changes. The problem is the resolution are to way to high for me  1400x 900.

I can't change any display options. Can anyone help me fix this - I need a lower resolution.

Thanks in advance.

SDCard on Windows 7 Machine

I have a Windows 7 laptop with a SD Card slot. When I insert an SD Card, the Windows identifies it as a SCSI device. I would like to access the SD Card from VM Ware running a UNIX like OS, but VMWare does not even recognize the SD Card as any sort of removable device. Do I need a special windows driver for VMWare?

1)In Terminal become root

2)As root  /etc/init.d/vmware stop

3) type in this as root  mv /lib/modules/3.4.11-2.16-desktop/weak-updates/updates/vmci.ko /tmp

4) then type in  vmware-modconfig --console --install-all

After it's all done in Terminal Player should work.

Network connection broken on resume from suspend after ugrade to Player 5.0

Product: VMware Player 5.0.0 build-812388

Host OS: Win7 64-bit, SP1

Guest OS: Xubuntu 12.04, 64-bit

After upgrading VMware Player from 4.x to 5.0, whenever I resume the Xubuntu 12.04 VM from a suspended state, the network interface is broken.  If I reboot the guest OS the network interface is still broken.

If I reboot the host OS (or restart the VMware DHCP and NAT services on the Win7 host) and then reboot the guest OS, the network interface in the guest OS will work.

I have tried rebooting (or restarting NAT/DHCP services) in the host OS, resuming the VM, then bringing networking down/up in the guest OS (no guest reboot), but  the network interface still will not work.  The guest OS must be rebooted after rebooting the host or restarting VMware NAT & DHCP on the host.

I had a similar problem under Player 4.x maybe once in 50-70 suspend/resumes.  Thus far with Player 5.0 it happens EVERY time I suspen/resume the VM.

Guest OS WMware tools were upgraded to Player 5.0 version of tools after upgradint Player.  I have also susequently run 'vmware-config-tools.pl' to ensure they were installed and running.

It appears that the DHCP and/or NAT services on the host are malfunctioning or dying and the Player cannot recover from suspend after this happens.

As I said, this VM seemed to work reliably (network fail once in 50-70 suspends) under Player 4.x.

Any thoughts?

Lightest way to run player

$

I have a VM that I want to run, I've had it for years. It's part of a software package from some company.

I have no interest whatsoever in a host operating system.  In an ideal world I would have the software (a unix machine) installed directly to my PC but I don't have media or the skills required to carry out the installation.

So my question is:  what is the most basic way to run a VMWare file.  At the moment I am using Windows XP but I wondered if there was a more basic host OS or method for running a VM file.

Bridged Networking / Mapped Network Drives are Unreliable

$

0

Greetings,

As a preliminary, here is my configuration:

Host Machine: Windows 7 Pro x64 running Vmplayer 5

Guest OS: Windows XP Pro x32 with all the latest MS updates and patches

The guest OS is configured to use bridged networking.

For the mapped drives within the guest OS, I have two configurations that I need to use:

1) The UNC shared folder is physically separate from the vmplayer's host machine.  FYI, this machine is also a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine.

2) The UNC shared folder is physically located on the vmplayer's host machine.

For configuration 1, I'm using the Windows XP mapped network drive feature to setup the mapped drives

For configuration #2, I've tried both the native Windows XP mapped network drive option and also the built-in Vmplayer "Shared Folder" option.

In all cases, the drives appear to mount properly and light use of the mapped drives seems to work just fine.  However, whenever I run an application that taxes the mapped drives I often encounter break-downs and application errors.  I just can't seem to get a solid and reliable mapped drive within the guest OS.

Is this a bridged networking problem?  Or, a mapped drive problem?  Or, both?

Is my problem common?  Please, what steps can I take to get a solid reliable mapped drive within the guest OS?

Best regards,

Jeff
