No audio output with Ubuntu 12 running as a guest

0
0

Hi everyone,

I installed Ubuntu 12 as a guest on VMWare Player running on Windows 7. Almost everything seems to work, but there is no sound. I can't listen to any audio that I play on Ubuntu. I also installed VMPlayer tools on Ubuntu in order to support the virtual devices, but sound doesn't work yet. When a I play a mp3 file with mpg123, an icon of VMWare Player starts blinking showing that there is sound in output, but Windows play nothing. Do I have to install another driver in order to play audio on Linux running as guest on Windows 7?

Thanks in advance

VMware Player 5.0.2 Does Not See Wireless Adapter

0
0

Hello guys,

I am having a problem with VMware Player 5.0.2 build-1031769 (the same existed with older versions of VMware Player 5 but this is the one I currently have).

The Player does not recognize my wireless adapter Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN on a Lenovo T410 laptop. I have another T410 with Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6200 AGN and it works fine.

Here are the symptoms:

- When I use NAT networking it works fine

- When I use bridged networking, the guest OS (in this case Windows XP) says that the cable is disconnected

- I found some threads saying that this might be a router issue but it is not because with the other laptop in the same network everything works fine

- When I connect to the network using LAN (cable) bridged connection works without a problem

- My network on the host OS works without any problem

- Windows recognizes the wireless adapter without any problem:

Device Manager.jpg

- VMware Player does not show the adapter in the bridging settings but shows some kind of Microsoft virtual adapter:

VM Bridging Settings.jpg

- When I run the Virtual Network Editor it is the same: no real adapter but the Microsoft virtual adapter

Virtual.jpg

- I tried resetting the network configuration to the defaults but this did not help

I am running Windows 8 Enterprise.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Unity Mode activation by a vbscript does it possible

Hi

I want to display a application on my host computer  that is running on a virtual machine (guest). I am starting the virtual machine with this little vbscript:

     Option Explicit

     Dim WshShell, oExec

     Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

     Set oExec = WshShell.Exec("C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware VIX\vmrun.exe start ""D:\Production\BEB\machine.vmx"" nogui")

I am using the wmrun because i can start the virtual machine in nogui mode. This code work fine but not as i would like. I want to start the unity mode to be able to display my application but not the virtual machine on my host. I find some reference as adding this line the .vmx file and this is not working very well.

Does it possible to activate the unity mode with the vmrun command  ?

Thank you

Have a good day

Swap space

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 host and windows 8 in the Vm Player. I get a message that states "VMware Player recommends 1 GB of system swap space for the set of currently running virtual machines. 0 bytes of system swap space is available". Can someone please tell me how to increase the Vm swap space. Also I read there is an increase in performance if the Vm files are stored on a separate drive, if it's not too much trouble, how would I go about doing so?

Thank you for any help.

Horrible Performance/Excess Disk Activity

0

I'm running a Windows 7 VM that is stored on a dedicated USB SSD.

When I run this VM from my laptop, it seems to run just fine. But when I run it from my desktop, the performance is terrible and the SSD shows 100% activity time for something like the first 10 minutes of launching the VM.

My desktop has 32GB RAM. I'm allocating 8GB (also tried 16GB) to the VM. I'm giving the VM 60GB disk space. And I'm giving the VM half of my 8 virtual cores. CPU, memory and everything else show very little activity. But the SSD is at 100%. I also tried running the VM on my local drive and the results were the same.

It seems like after 15 or 20 minutes that the disk activity subsides somewhat and performance improves.

Can anyone point me in a direction that might help me resolve this? I'm not a VM expert. I'm using VMWare player with default settings where possible.

(Although after having typed this, I see the VM drive (SSD) is back up to continuous 100% activity even as I'm not doing anything in the VM.)

bunch of folders with .lck extensions appeared in my virtual machine folder.

I noticed that a bunch of errors fly past when I run my virtual machine in vmware. I looked in that virtual machines files and I now have a few folders that have .lck added to identical files listed. the .lck all were created at the same time. I don't know what these are, and if they matter. they each contain one file with 1 kb. what is the correct procedure now?

I want to try the advice at the knowledge base, but I can't see the errors in order to ascertain whether the advice is pertinent to me!. I am also concerned about closing down my guest now, since I don't know if I will be able to re-open Linux Mint. I will be very hesitant to use my firefox browser in windows XP, due to the current ending of support. I will have to connect that way in case of an emergency, but I want to avoid that. Thank you.

VMware Player unrecoverable error

Hello,

I am all new here. Apologies for not being able to thoroughly check if this has been answered before. I realise that I'm not the first one with this problem, but I'm simply not capable of realising what solutions really apply to me.

All help is very much appreciated!

I have been using VMware Player without problem for quite some time now, and tonight it just won't start up, and I get this error:

VMware Player unrecoverable error: (vmplayer)

Exception 0xc0000006 (disk error while paging) has occurred.

Please see the attached log for more information. I'm no techie, so I really need all the help I can get! (Someone else wrote that adding the whole log was rude, but I simply don't know what to include and what not to!)

Slightly desperately yours,

Dex.

Server 2008 R2 to VMWare Player image

I have a client that is decommissioning a server and as a precaution I have decided to make an image of this server before it is repurposed. I have chosen the VM Player option in the conversion tool and was curious if that would be the way to go or if I should choose workstation? Either way I will have 8 cores at the most and the machine that is being converted has 12 so I'm not sure if I am going to have some real issues or not. Again, this is more of a failsafe option than anything else in case there are files that my client is not aware they need that are located in areas other than their shared drives documents, and other normal data repositories. Thanks for any input

Win 8.1 issues

I have a new Win 8.1 64-bit computer.  I installed VMware player to run Win XP Pro SP2 (32-bit) so that I could use older applications not compatible with Win 8.

The installation of XP went smoothly.  However, after the initial installation and activation I found I could not run Windows Update to get SP3.  The update failed with error code 1079 "Could not start the Cryptographic Service."  I checked and this service is set to automatic.  I then tried to install SP3 from a separate download.  This also failed because "Windowscodecs.dll" was not found.  I found this DLL by Googling and installed it, but this still does not allow SP3 to install.  I also tried to install another browser, other than IE, and that failed.

Has anyone actually installed XP on a Win 8 machine using WMware and made it work?

Thank you.

Linux Virtual Machine installation problems for windows non-administrative user accounts/Security of Linux guest on currently unsupported XP host.

0
0

I apologize; this is a long-winded, possibly repetitious post. I'm quite tired and frustrated by now.

I have been trying for days to successfully install vmware player (not workstation) in windows xp, and then install linux mint 16 Petra as a guest OS inside it. I want to use it from a regular windows user account that does not have administrative privileges. I could only install vmware using an administrative user account. I installed it in the "all users" folder, thinking this would insure that every user has access to it, and then I created and and installed a linux virtual machine, with the files placed in a regular, non-admin account. I used the virtual machine for at least a week this way, adjusting my settings, installing some applications, And personalizing my firefox browser with links and add-ons. I had many questions, and visited a number of forums to get my arrangement working.

I was busy trying to learn about installing the vmware tools properly and completely, and researching the true security status of this arrangement. I am using only the linux guest for all web browsing, email, and business transactions. However, despite what I was told by the person who helped me set this up, I believe my arrangement is not really more secure than simply continuing to use XP despite the discontinuation of support. By being connected to the web, and having my virus software updating regularly, I assume I am still vulnerable. I tried using a strong firewall - ZoneAlarm, but it was constantly asking for permissions for vmware to access the web, in addition to other processes that I do not recognize at all, but are apparently bits and pieces of programs and utilities on my pc that update from time to time. I had to uninstall it.

I have searched this site, and the web for more information about how to keep things as secure as possible, including Q. how to set up the virtual networks and protect even my linux guest from getting malware and passing it into windows?? I haven't been able to find even one expert in vmware player who could give it to me straight. I can't find any helpful documentation either, Which is very disappointing, since VMware player is highly regarded in the world of virtual partitions and operating systems. I did come across some other people on forums who are expressing the same concerns, and asking these questions.  Everyone who answers, admits that they are just doing a lot of logical guessing.

One basic safety recommendation out there is to use a windows user account without administrative privileges most of the time. And here lies my practical problem:

I started up the VMware player in a regular user account, but I could not make the virtual linux machine work! The linux virtual machine refuses to load completely - it starts and then just hangs. If I "run" it as an administrator, there's no problem! I tried so many times, not understanding the root of the problem, that I probably caused errors and crashes. I finally decided to completely uninstall and reinstall vmware in a better location, in the programs files. It didn't help.

The vmware player opens in the regular windows user, but will not load the virtual machine that is installed there. The virtual machine files are actually located in a folder that is inside that very user account! I tried to use the option of opening an "existing" virtual machine, by browsing to the VMX file in the virtual machine folder. It started to load, and then just hung. I finally had to create a new virtual machine from within the regular user account, with a new virtual partition, with a new instance of the same OS in it. So I have none of my settings! And Q: I don't know if the problem is truly from vmware player, or from the linux mint 16 petra guest.

Now, I am having problems because the vmware player does not yet have tools installed, and is being very difficult to use. I tried to install vmware tools in the new machine in the regular account. The DVD appeared on the desktop and I opened it. But I can't extract the files to the desktop - the relevant file is 'greyed' out so I can not work with it! I will have to go back to the administrative account to install the tools. It is even difficult to find tutorials about installing the tools in the vmware player as opposed to the workstation. And during the installation there are some instructions that are not clear to me. Q: I don't know if the messages are from vmware player or linux:

1. The vmxnet driver is no longer supported on kernels 3.3 and greater. Please

upgrade to a newer virtual NIC. (e.g., vmxnet3 or e1000e)

2.Detected X server version 1.14.3

Distribution provided drivers for Xorg X server are used.

Skipping X configuration because X drivers are not included.

Q: Does anyone know what those issues mean?  I will have to come back to the regular non-admin user, just to see if it works. I probably could get around some of this by using commands in the linux terminal, but I don't know anything about stuff like that yet.

Q: Is this normal for a windows installation of vmware? That you have to install both the vmwware player and the vmware tools from an administrative account, and then you can't access that virtual machine with the regular user account where the virtual machine files are actually located??? This doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Q: Am I doing something wrong?

In addition, I really wanted to keep my original virtual machine with the new reinstallation of vmware. I don't know how, but it was successful at first: When the vmware player was re-installed, my original linux virtual machine showed up as installed in there. And of course it worked just fine in the admin user. But the regular user can't load it.

I want to use that same linux virtual machine in the other, non-admin user account. Q: Is there a way to have VMplayer in the regular user account use that same virtual machine? I tried the option of opening up an existing machine: by browsing to the vmx file that is in the virtual machine folder in that same user's documents folder! Q: Shouldn't that work?

It won't open. The only way to open it is to "run" it as an administrator. My only recourse was to create a brand new virtual machine for the second user with its own name, password and file settings. Then I have to go back to the admin user to install the vmware tools!

I really want to use vmware from a windows non-admin user, for security reasons. I have no reason to have two separate instances of the same virtual OS on my PC!

Q: Does anyone have any clear answers?? I'm a newbie to all things virtual, and all things linux, so if you respond to me, please have patience, and try to use basic words: I won't understand technical stuff without explicit step-by-step instructions!

Guest Machines Do Not Show in VMPlayer Library

My vmware player does not show gest machines in the library. My troubleshooting suggests its a permissions error on whereever the library data is stored.

When I try to open a guest machine  the player does not show the  guest in the inventory pane of the  player. However I can run  vmplayer /path/to/machine.vmx and the machine  will open execute  properly.

When  I run vmware player as root (or even a regular user) it works   correctly - so it seems clearly tied to my user account. I have tried rm  -rf ~/.vmware and rerunning the player but I  get the same behavior.

The problem happens with all guest machines - so it does not appear to be related to anything about a machine itself.

Does anyone know where vmware player stores the inventory data? Nothing in the  ~/.vmware directory seems to be related to this, but the library data must be persisted somewhere. Where is this file?

I'm running vmware player 3.1.3 build-324285 on Ubuntu Linux  2.6.31-22-generic-pae Ubuntu 9.10.

Thanks for any help.

Changing graphics adapter OpenGL version support

0

I have a Windows XP SP2 running on VMware Player, and during setup it installed by default a "VMware SVGA II", that has support for OpenGL 2.1. I need to run tests on a system limited to OpenGL 1.4 though. When I disable 3d acceleration, it drops to OpenGL 1.1, which is too early to be of use to me. Is there a way to set the OpenGL version to 1.4?

Hello,

I am trying to install vmware Player and I get the error "Running Processes Detected'' setup can not configure network settings on this machine. please close any network configuration applications, such as any network card configuration applet, before continuing.

I don't see any such application running on my computer, I checked every single process running.

I search online and found nothing...

Anyone know how to solve this?

Can not change size of allocated RAM - repost cause of no offered solution - HELP PLEASE

Hello!

at first i'm sorry that i have to ask such a simple question once again. I just found no working answer.

I am using a macbook and had to install vmware-fusion 6.3 mainly to use microsoft office. At the installation-process i haven't noticed any preferences where i could adjust the number of RAM and cpu. So the default setting is 1cpu and 2048 RAM but i need more cause i also use simple graphic-programs.

When i go to preferences/cpu&ram the windows are greyed out so i can't change them. I also have stopped vmware and followed all the steps like its sayed in the info-tab but the corners are still greyed out...

In this thread: Can not change size of allocated RAM woodyz is talking about editing the .vmx configuration file.

Is this the solution to my problem and if so where can i find the.vmx-file in MAC OS?

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello --  I plugged in a usb floppy  drive to my win7 system.  win7  sees it and I can read and write data to the  disc in the drive

I started vmware player, and wanted  the floppy to be a device in the vm, but player does not see the usb floppy --

Is this by design or is there an player  option to turn this on?

Thanks
