Minimize to Tray while under Unity...

0

Hi!

Since some time ago, I have VMware player installed on my computer. I must say I love how the software works, indeed! And the Unity mode is a fun toy to play with! But, it has something that should be fixed, I think. I don't know how VMware workstation works under Unity, but I guess its the same as Player.

As you enter Unity mode, the VMware player window minimizes to the taskbar. This window is confusing sometimes, and its OBSTRUCTIVE. It doesn't have anymore the system itself, and it becomes practically useless.

I think this useless window should be removed, and the program minimized to the system tray (not the guest programs themselves, but the VMware window). I have this suggestion:

The VMware Player/Workstation window is minimized to system tray by default when entering Unity. It has the following options when right-clicked:

*Exit Unity Mode: Exits Unity, returning the guest OS to its windowed mode.

(Separation)

*Show VMware on Taskbar: For those that don't mind the obstructive taskbar item and useless window.

*Help on using Unity: Shows the help for Unity Mode.

*VMWare on the Web: Opens the VMware website on the Host OS.

(Separation)

*Guest System Tray Notifications: This section shows the Guest OS System tray icons.

(Separation)

*Guest Programs: An application menu, besides the one that activates while hovering the Host Start menu.

*Check for updates: Checks for newer versions for VMWare Player/Workstation, as well as VMWare Tools.

*Machine Settings: Opens the Configuration window.

*Power Options: Options to reset/suspend/power off, and maybe an ACPI Power off.

*About VMWare: Shows the About window.

*Kill Application: Exits VMware.

I hope you take this into account, since it would be quite useful.

64 Bit Player Install Issues

I've noticed several threads where people have trouble installing VMWare Player 64 bit on what appears to be a 64 bit host OS. I am using an Acer ATC605-UR13 Desktop PC, with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. All indication shows that it is a 64 bit hardware, with 64 bit OS and Intel VT support enabled. See the attached screen shots of the Intel utility to check compatibility.

However when I install VMWare Player, it always installs the 32 bit version. And if I try to install any OS on the (either 32 or 64 bit) it only starts with a black screen.

What have I missed in the configuration or set up to always get the 32 bit Player? how can I resolve this issue?

Hi,

on VMware player 6.0.2 build-1744117 I have a virtual machine (OS : Win 2008 R2 server). When it is off, I edit and on hard disk I choose to compact using utilities. This disk has about 19 Gb free.

It works but the size of physical file on host server does not change.

How to shrink or compact it ?

Thank you.

Hello,

I installed VMware player the other day on my PC and noticed that my keyboard wasn't working, I mean, only the media keys works (Volume Keys and mute button). I tried to uninstalling VMware, now the keyboard was working fine again until I installed VMware again. This happens even when I dont open VMware at all.

I have tried to google for my problem but it did not give any answer that could have helped me. Any help can be really appreciated.

OS: Windows 8 Pro

Keyboard: Logitech MK320 Wireless Keyboard. (Mouse from this set works fine too)

Thank you,

Shantanu

Error while powering on: The file specified is not a virtual disk

Hello.

I realise this is no doubt a commonly discussed topic however I opened this discussion in hopes of getting a specific answer that will help fix the problem.

I'm running VMWare Player on Windows 7, and I'm running Windows XP virtually. I have been getting this error of late (see attachment).

What steps could I take to first find the source of the error and then correct it?

Regards.

Behavior of a NAT interface

0
0

VMWare Player 6.0.1 NAT interfaces have a strange behaviour regarding ICMP destination unreachable packets.

In most NATs (all?), these packets are allowed to ingress the NATed network upon a egress UDP or TCP packet that fails to reach the destination host & port.

Although permitted by the proper RFC standards if put forward by specific security policies, this behaviour is very annoying and unusual, since TCP connections to unknown destinations can only terminate upon timeouts.

Furthermore, it makes VMWare's NAT unusable for simulating a typical NAT behaviour whenever these ICMP datagrams are critical to some protocol.

Is this an intended behaviour or just a bug?

If this is an intended behaviour, is there any way to configure/disable it?

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Vmware Player 6 can't install 3D acceleration with ATI Radeon 2400 Pro Card

Vmware Player 6 can't install 3D acceleration with ATI Radeon 2400 Pro Card on  host - does not seem to detect it (is it just too old) -however on host it says 3D graphics enabled so it is a 3D card.  I have used it on a physical xp as well before converted it to a VMDK for Vmware player 6.  Vmware tools installed on guest but when I enable the 3D setting in Vmware player settings I get a ? for Super VGA II in device manager of guest - no detection of any ATi card either from host.

Dxdiag also says generic driver loaded and to install drivers of the hardware - but installing ATI Catalyst - i tried ver 11-12 on guest completes but there is no install of the ATI drivers or on reboot - just the Super VGA II.  I did repair install Vmware Tools as well and still issue.

Is there a way to get the ATI card detected or for the Vmware tools Super VGA II to detect the 3D capabilites of the card?

Please help.

HEy guys...pretty new to this whole thing, but after much reading and consideration I wen't ahead and purchased VMWare Workstation. A few days ago I got the prompt to install the new 10.3 version...now here is where things get complicated. I noticed that now I have VMPlayer installed and there is where the new version is. Doesn't seem like my workstation updated itself. Is this normal, or did I do something wrong? When installing the new version it asked if I wanted (or had to) uninstall the older version. I ask because I don't wan't to have to set up a whole ne OS with the new version and if so it seems I can't use the VMware tools. Any suggestions? ...btw do you guys recommend me working with the new 10.0 versions and above..as I scrolled down i noticed that earlier versions where more compatible with other programs.

VirtualMachine Menu missing from menubar in FULL screen mode

Running VMplayer 6.0.3 build-1895310, 3.13.0-30-generic Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, /tmp/vmware-dunn/vmware-player-6964.log ...

in this log I see:

W110: Failed to get guest launch hierarchy: Maximum items (512) reached for menu 0

Not sure if this points to the issue or not...

The menu item was there in 6.02 then disappeared when full screen mode. I upgraded to 6.03 and it still is missing from the menu bar in full screen mode. I have tried searching all threads on how this could happen and have yet to find an answer. I have compared the ~/.preferences file to another Ubuntu install that does show the menu and there's no differences, also compared with the /etc/vmware/config and nothing stands out. I have created fresh VM's and still no VitrualMachine menu item in full screen.

Any ideas on how to get the Menu item to show back up in the full screen menu bar would really help...

VMware tools update gives garbled dialog box for password

This is on a linux host 3.10.17 64-bit (Slackware) with VMware Player version 6.03 64 bit. When I try to install VMware tools, it pops up a dialog box for the password, except they are all garbled characters. If I try to type the password in anyway it only seems to echo one character, and then, of course, it denies permission. Even the permission-denied window has garbled unreadable characters so I am guessing that is what it is saying. This has happened on three of my Linux machines. Anyone has this happen?

How to disable the ability to allow creation of VM's in VMware Player?

Hi, First of all, sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place... I couldn't seem to be able to find VMware player part of the forum. I've got a need to allow users to just run VM's and not be able to create them, it's been a while since I've used VMware player so I downloaded the latest version and it seems now that you are able to create VM's and play them... Does anyone know how to disable the ability for users to be able to create VM's... I just want to let them play them... Hope someone can help? Regards, Dave.

VMware Player 6 crashes (VMM fault 14)

Hi,

I'm running Scientific Linux 6.5 (a RHEL 6.5 derivative and binary compatible) 64 bit guest on a Windows 7 64 bit host. Everything runs fine with 1 virtual CPU, but if I enable 2 or 4 the VM crashes (usually during boot, but not always), or applications in the VM crash. (Host CPU is a Core-i5 2410M, 2 physical cores, 4 cores with HyperThreading).

I usually get one of the following error messages:

The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine.

VMware player unrecoverable error: (vcpu-2)

vcpu-2: VMM fault 14: src=MONITOR rip=0xfffffffffc26bf94 regs=0xfffffffffc008b70

I attached the referenced log.

Any idea what's wrong???

Regards,

Gyorgy

UPDATE: I checked the same VM with Ubuntu 13.10 64bit host, and I couldn't reproduce the problem.

LPT on PCI card

I need to run old software designed for Win98 printing via LPT1. On newer PC with Win7 with  WMPlayer software works normally. The problem is with LPT. The new PC doesn´t have LPT on motherboard. LPT added on PCI card works excelent on Win7. After trying to connect virtual Win98 LPT with host, I got message: "Cannot open VMparport driver for LPT1. Failed to connect virtual device parallel0.“

Can anybody help?

Proper network config

Hey all. Im relatively new at networking and VMWare Player/Workstation..will try to make this as straight foward as possible.

I want 2 VMs operating on a single host PC to communicate with one another (one being a client XP system and the other a Windows Server), and also use my host networks DG for WWW access.

Im using a preconfigured DHCP address pool, as per my schools requirement and obviously the preconfigured addresses are not in my home networks subnetwork.

How do I add the functionality of accessing the WWW if my VMs DGs are in another subnet as host network DG I need to point to???

Im pretty sure its something with the network adapter settings inside the VMs but I cant seem to comprehend how those settings work.

Thanks in advance. -Lee
