Issue with VMware Workstation Pro 16 on Kali Linux

Dears,

I am using Kali Linux 2020.3, Linux Kernel version 5.8.0 and GCC version 10.2.0. I have an issue with VMware Workstation Pro 16 as below.

I successfully installed on my machine; however, whenever I try to open it, it pops up the below notification.

Screenshot-20200924131834-499x378.png

I tried to fill the Location box with /usr/bin/gcc, but it then showed

So anybody know which version of GCC required by VM Workstation 16 or any solution for this issue?

Thank you so much for your time,

VM Ware workstation 15 player Error in opening vmx file is corrupt

I am using VM Ware workstation 15 player in Win 10 laptop. The Guest OS is Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I had the maximum size of the HD set to 40 GB. The current size has reached 39.4, and today the OS will not open. It tries to when I give the command, but is unable to complete the process of opening and freezes up. I assume it is due to lack of space.

So I went to increase the disc capacity, but when I click on the option to do so it gives the message that "There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation." My HD has 120 GB, and 12 GB are free. I tried to increase the virtual HD by 6 GB. But I read that there has to be a free space on the HDD equal in size to the Virtual HD size in order to expand it. In reading on the VM ware site it says that one solution for this is to copy the workstation virtual machine to an external drive where there is adequate space, and carry out the expand operation there. After which it can be again moved back to the original location in one's computer.

So I copied the workstation virtual machine to an external drive. When I try to open it there, I get the message "Error in opening, vmx file is corrupt." I read about how to recover or create a new vmx file here, but the first step it gives is: "Log in to the Flash or HTML5 web client as an administrator". I read about this but could not understand how I can do it.

Please kindly guide me so that I can expand the size of my workstation virtual machine.

hello

I have installed the new version of vmWare player on Windows 10. When I start my ubuntu VM I have this warning:

To disable mitigations, change the side channel mitigations setting in the advanced panel of the virtual machine settings. Refer to VMware KB article 79832 at https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/79832 for more details.

I havent find how I can disable it on the player configuration.

thanks

Age of Empires runs, but I can't see the mouse pointer

I recently downloaded VMware Player 16, Linux (Fedora 32) host, WIndows 10 client. I had to use the "--ignore-errors" option when setting VMware up or it failed. After installing the operating system, I loaded my original Age of Empires disk from the 1990s and the program runs well, but I can't see my mouse pointer. This makes the game very difficult to play. The mouse pointer is present and visible when I'm setting up the game, but the moment the game starts, it disappears. Any clues as to why this happens or more particularly how to fix it? Thanks.

"Cycle Through Multiple Monitor" broken for triple monitor setup on Workstation Player 16

VM: Manjaro Linux (Kernel 5.8)

Host: Windows 10 2004 Pro 64bit

I just upgraded to VMWare Workstation Player 16 (from 15). I have a triple monitor setup (two external 1080p monitors connected to laptop with 1080p display). Before the upgrade I was able to use the triple monior setup inside the VM by selecting a layout from "Cycle Multiple Displays", but now selecting a layout from the list does not do anything.

Strangely enough multi monitor works when I disable any one of the three displays, and try to use a dual monitor setup.

One more observation: I tried to look into the mksSandbox logs, and I found that it refers to the other two displays as "DISPLAY 4" and "DISPLAY 5" instead of dispay 2, 3. Maybe this might have something to do with the issue.

Have attached mksSandbox*.log and vmware*.log as a zip.

Trouble starting Windows 10 guest under Ubuntu 20.04

Hi

I have Win 10 VM which was created about a year ago under Ubuntu 19.10 which worked fine.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 and unable to open this VM - VMWare window immediately disappears as soon as I start the VM.

My PC is based on Ryzen 7 3700 and I am using Player 16.

Here is the log I am getting:

DirectDraw Init Failure - Windows 95

0

I'm trying to play Links LS 1998 on a Windows 95 virtual machine (VMware Workstation 16 Player) but when I start the game, I immediately get a "DirectDraw Init failure" and the game ceases to load.

When trying to re-install DirectX ver. 4, it shows me that the subsystem components all come up "Certified" except one. The Display driver says "No Hardware Support." I don't know if that the problem but it could be.

I have VMware tools installed, so the display drivers should be okay. Everything else works great.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this "DirectDraw Init failure"?

Thank you!

How to traverse the host's physical adapter from a VM while using NAT?

0

Hi

I’ve been trying to get my VMs to connect to the internet but there only seems to be communication between the VM, virtual NAT adapter(VMnet8) and the hosts physical adapter.

The version I am using is Workstation Player 15.5.6 build-16341506 which has several Linux VMs, the main one being OpenSUSE 15.2 and the others being Fedora 32 and Ubuntu 20.04. The host OS is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

All the VMs have a virtual network adapter added and set to NAT. The virtual adapter VMnet8 is enabled, VMnet1 is disabled and the hosts physical LAN adapter is enabled.

After setting the hosts Physical LAN adapter to share it's connection by turning on "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection" it changed the IP address of the VMnet8, however it has not allowed connecting to or pinging WAN addresses.

The guest OS seem to pick up an IP address and default gateway from the NAT’s original IP range before it was changed by the physical LAN adapter. The VMware services listed below seem to be enabled and running:

VMware Authorization Service

VMware DHCP Service

VMware NAT Service

VMware USB Arbitration Service

Is there a windows firewall setting that needs to be changed, a DNS setting required on the guest OS or is there something else that needs doing to traverse the host's physical adapter?

No option for 'Guest Isolation' in VMware Workstation 16 player

Hi,

I was trying to solve the issue of not being able to copy and paste from my windows 10 PC to the virtual Ubuntu 18.04 CLI.

I found out i should enable it in Guest Isolation tab in options but I do not have such thing in my menu (as you can see in the screenshot below).

I should have the VMware tools installed so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Dwm related APIs dosn't working on guest win10 (host win10) / Faster screenshot on guest

HI,

I'm trying to create fast windowshot under VMWare. Guest is Windows 10 x64, Host is Windows 10 x64. VMWare tools are installed.

1) I can use PrintWindow from user32. It runs about 50ms per frame on test dx app.

2) On host I can use undocumented DwmGetDxSharedSurface from user32. It runs about 5ms per frame on test dx app but only on host. It returns "Invalid function" on guest.

3) There is Dwm(p)DxGetWindowSharedSurface API from dwmapi.dll with DWM_REDIRECTION_FLAG_SUPPORT_PRESENT_TO_GDI_SURFACE ( from DwmDxGetWindowSharedSurface function - Win32 apps | Microsoft Docs  ) this is also works on host but returns "DWM_S_GDI_REDIRECTION_SURFACE_BLT_VIA_GDI GDI redirection surface is either on a different adapter or in system memory. Perform blt via GDI" on guest.

So the only working solution avaliable so far is first one. Question is: Do we have faster method in guest Win10 OS than PrintWindow?

Make sure Touch-USB connects to VMware at startup

I have a user interface application running in a VMware run by a VMware Player on a stand-alone PC.

Input is generated by user through a Touch-screen with USB-touch.

It works very well when the USB-touch is connected to the VMware, The problem is that when the VMware restarts the USB-touch is connected to the host-PC.

If I unplug the USB and re-inserts a pop-up is displayed on the VMware - asking if it should connect to host or VMware. I select VMware and check the box "remember choice and dont ask again". But next time the VMware starts, the USB-touch is again connected to the host...

In the VMware I can open the menu and select "Removable Devices" and disconnect from host - then it is directly connected to the VMware - and it works as intended.

How do I make sure this is permanently set to always connect to the VMware upon startup of the VMware?

Workstation player use case to reduce windows patch time and patch breakage

0
0

Hi All,

I'm looking to see if Workstation Player (or some other product) is a good use case for the following situation:

  • 120-ish industrial PCs running Windows 10 on various remote sites
  • All industrial PCs are enclosed in water proof containers and a pain in the butt to physically accessed
  • PCs run custom app on a touch screen that is running inventory on a manufacturing line
  • Custom app requires USB and serial port access to peripherals
  • Remote sites have next to no technical expertise available

Patching the systems (SCCM) can take several hours to patch with various reboots and this doesn't work for the manufacturing lines AND the once in a while breakage due to patches causes no end of downtime and administrative work I want to avoid.

I'm wondering if Workstation Player fits the use case and is stable to run a critical production system this way:

Minimal OS install running Workstation Player:

VM #1 - Windows OS 1 with custom mfg app

VM #2 - Windows OS 2 with custom mfg app

Systems will run off VM #1 until patch time comes up.  VM #2 is pushed down from centralized location in the background so no outage yet.  When patch time comes up, shutdown VM #1 and launch VM #2.  After if VM #2 is running fine, we are good until next patch time and would replace VM #1 with updated VM.  If VM #2 isn't working properly, they reboot back into VM #1.

With the above, I believe we've reduced patch time AND patch breakage from hours of downtime to a shutdown and reboot.

What holes can be poked in the above plan?  Licensing cost is the biggest issue I see at this point.

Thanks for the help!  Brent

Extremely slow graphics performance (Player: 14.1, Host: Win10, Guest: Ubuntu 20.04)

Hi,

my freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04 VM under VMWare Workstation Player 14.1 running on Windows 10 suffers from ridiculously slow graphics performance.

For comparison, my old Ubuntu 16.04 VM (which I had originally installed under VMWare 12.x and has kept the same format) works much better:

OLD Ubuntu 16.04:

$ vmware-toolbox-cmd -v

10.2.0.1608 (build-7253323)

$ x11perf -all

  700000000 reps @   0.0000 msec (157000000.0/sec): Dot

NEW Ubuntu 20.04:

$ vmware-toolbox-cmd -v

10.2.5.8049 (build-8068393)

$ x11perf -all

   30000000 reps @   0.0002 msec (4140000.0/sec): Dot

I remember having the same issue with the old machine when I first installed it 4 years ago, but I can't remember what I had to do to get this fixed, perhaps it was the "Accelerate 3D graphics" flag but I can't be sure after all these years.

Accelerate 3D graphics checkbox is ticked on both machines, and vmware-tools is installed on both.

Any ideas what I might be missing?

Thank you!

Pass GPU from host to guest

Hi,

My computer has an nvidia quadro GPU and I would like to be able to see this hardware within my guest OS (ubuntu 16.04). I should be able to see it through the command "lspci" although it is not appearing. The reason I need this is to develop using the nvidia cuda platform and using the cudnn library. After following the installation process for this library, I am getting an error stating "no CUDA-capable device detected". I believe this is due to the fact that I am working inside of the vm (workstation 15 player).

Is it possible to give my guest access to the GPU?

Can't find gcc version to compile linux kernel modules

I'm running VMWare on a Debian testing machine. After kernel and VMWare update (kernel 5.8.0-2 and vmware-player-16.0.0) I receive an error that it can't find the gcc to compile the modules. With respect to similar issues found online, it does not even ask the gcc version, (null) is displayed instead.

The full message is "GCC C Compiler (gcc) version (null) was not found. ..." I've tried to use the different gcc versions paths, to change the default version with update-alternatives, but without results.

Can't access PPP equipment connected to Guest

Hello everyone!

First, let me thank this community in advance, since it helped me in the past.

Well, basically, what I'm trying to do is to connect an equipment that needs to talk to a Windows Host through a Linux (Lubuntu) Guest.

Now a bit more of details:

1 - I have a software that only runs on Windows, and this is running on the Windows host that's also running the VMWare Player;

2 - The equipment talks RS-485, and connects using a PPP link, so I'm using a Serial x USB converter

3 - Using pppd on the Guest, I've created a connection to the equipment board that I need to talk to;

4 - From the Guest, I'm able to ping this equipment's remote IP (192.168.2.2), and I can confirm it by the equipment interace board LEDs...

5 - ... But I can't do it from my Windows Host.

6 - From the Host, I can ping the VM NIC (192.168.2.1) and the local PPP IP (192.168.2.4);

7 - The network card is configured with NAT.

8 - This is the command I'm using to create the PPP link: pppd silent noccp  nodetach noauth local logfile /home/logs/''$timestamp''pppd2.txt nocrtscts defaultroute kdebug 5 debug proxyarp 192.168.2.4:192.168.2.2 /dev/ttyMXUSB2 9600

USB-Touch device cant communicate "beep" to VM

I have a USB-Touchscreen connecting to a VM run by a Workstation Player. (See other thread for autoconnect issues I had previously.. Make sure Touch-USB connects to VMware at startup )

When connecting the USB-Touch to the VM I get the message:

IMG_1040.jpg

And the "beep" sound no longer works. When the USB-Touch is connected to the host-PC, the "beep" works - and the sound is communicated to the phono-jack on the host PC.

How do I make the VM also give a "beep"?

Webcam USB Device Connection Unsuccessful

Hi All,

I am using latest VMware 16 and facing very critical issue related to the webcam, VMware is simply not detecting my Dell Latitude inbuilt webcam in the virtual Windows 10.

It shows this error:

''The connection for the USB device 'Microdia Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_E4HD' was unsuccessful''

I tried following methods to fix it:

1. Used the standard feature to connect USB webcam but got the above described error.

2. Installed VMware tools.

3. Installed latest drivers both in Host & Guest OS.

4. Also updated all the Windows update.

5. Used repair option of VMware in the Host windows 10 OS.

6. Checked ''services.msc'' and found ''VMware USB Arbitration Service'' is already active and set to start automatically.

But still my webcam is not detecting in the virtual machine.

Is there working solution available.

Kindly help as it is important.

Is the VMware Tools ISO for NetWare included in the latest release of Workstation? I installed Player, then received an error when attempting to install the tools. I then checked the online repository for VMware Tools and could not find the ISO for NetWare there, only SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Windows. Please advise. Thank you.

how to connect the virtual net interface via bridge to a dedicated network interface on the host machine?

0
0

Hi!

I thought of giving vmware a try and am already stuck.... sorry.

I want to configure a vm that uses a dedicated usb ethernet connector as it's bridged interface to the network.

It should be the only interface to the net.

I tried to find a way to choose the ethernet interface of the host machine to link it hard with my virtual one.

I am running debian as host and want to create a vm that pxe boots and installs windows on the vm over the network.

Basically the boot server should be able to see the MAC of the ethernet adaptor that is hard linked to the powerd up vm.
So my question is: is it even possible.

If the straight answer is no, then please just let me know and I'm gone.

Thank you in advance for bothering.

cheers,

Using one GPU on Ubuntu, different one on virtual windows machine

0
0

Hi -

I am completely new to virtual machines. I use a workstation running Ubuntu 18.04 for some engineering stuff, and it uses a Radeon GPU. I would like to also use this machine to run a Windows game (specifically DCS World) which requires a different GPU - and directx 11.

If I install a NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti in it, can I use Workstation Player to run Windows 10, utilizing this GPU, but have the native ubuntu system use the Radeon? Do I also understand correctly that Workstation Player supports DX 11 now?

Thanks!

VMWare Workstation (Free) hangs after a few seconds

0
0

Hello All:

I've been having an issue with VMWare Workstation (Free Version) since updating Windows 10 about 5 months ago. I tried troubleshooting then but was unsuccessful so ended running up VirtualBox. Though it did the job, I wasn't pleased with the interface and wanted to re-visit VMWare.

Some background:  VMWare Workstation Player was running fine to install and use a CentOS 8 VM. I had used it for several months without an issue until I updated Windows. Since then, VMWare Workstation launches then hangs. If I don't do anything, it hangs with a "Not responding" error after a few seconds until I kill it via Task Manager or Force Close. During this, the laptop fans start up and Task Manager shows it pegging CPUs. If I re-launch then quickly double-click the CentOS 8 VM, it will launch and actually get to the login screen before it hangs. In any case, it takes about 5 seconds before it hangs.  I tried waiting it out but after 15 minutes or more it never recovers.

I recently updated to the latest version of VMWare Workstation 16 with same issue.  To troubleshoot I have tried:

1. Uninstall and reinstall (removing saved settings)

2. Turning off anti-virus software (both temporary disable and disable requiring reboot)

3. Disabling Credential Guard via registry edit.

4. Uninstalling Ubuntu LTS from Windows Store (not a viable long term option though)

5. Uninstalling VirtualBox

6. Deleting the CentOS vm (saw suggestions that a suspened VM image was causing the issue)

It's not a life or death thing, but I really do prefer VMWare to VirtualBox so if anyone has suggestions it will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kwan

Ubuntu multiscreen unusable with manual scaling

I have a 27" 1440p monitor and a 27" 4k monitor I would like my Ubuntu instance to scale across. It works when I allow autoscaling, but the 4k screen is way too small. To fix this, I scaled it using Ubuntu display settings. Now, on my main 1440p screen, I cannot access the top 20% of the screen and whenever I go up there, another mouse pointer shows up. This makes it unusable.

Issue with vm player 16 text sharing feature between guest and host.

Hello, I have an issue with VM player 16, this is regarding the copy-paste text sharing option between the guest and host, I'm using win xp and I want to share text from XP to my win 10 machine, the issue is that it only shares the text when I hover the mouse outside the virtual machine to the host machine, otherwise, the text is not sent, is there any way to disable this feature and share the text even if the mouse is inside the guest machine AKA win XP?.

Here is a video showing what happens:

bandicam 2020-10-18 00-01-21-230

This is particularly troublesome when I'm using fullscreen mode since there is no way to hover the mouse inside win 10, then there is no way to share the text between guest and host at all, I need to quit full-screen mode, share the text, and enter full-screen mode again, making the sharing text function useless.

Thanks in advance.

Can't expand window of VMware Workstation 15 Player

Like the title states, I can't expand the window of the player. Grabbing a window edge and resizing results in the edge bouncing back to the original position. Using the "full screen" button results in the usable window staying the same size but with black bars around all edges.

join 2 private networks together into single network between two VMW hosts

0
0

Hello guys, I have the following:

1 Host OS: I run there 'Main VM' without internet and 'VPN VM' which seeds (ICS) its VPN connection to the 'Main VM' via vmnet5 adapter (Host-only network, Connect a host is unchecked).

2 Host OS: 'Main VM-2' without internet connection. I would like to join into vmnet5, which is managed by VMW on 1st Host.

Both VMV hosts connected into the same wifi network.

Could anyone suggest the most convenient approach? I imagine the solution could be pretty damn easy, but it could be also running a dedicated VM to create bridge, use local VPN, use direct ethernet cable or 2 wifi adapters to create private link. I know only the headlines of these methods but haven't tried anything. Please advise.

Installing Workstation Player 16 on a Hyper-V VM

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a version 16 player installed on a Windows 10 VM running in Hyper-V so I can use the afore mentioned as a management VM for the company's engineering toolset which is hosted on VMWare VM's.

I've got as far as "Preparing 'VMWare Player' for installation and it basically goes no further.

I've checked the W10 version and I can confirm it is; 20H2 (19042.572)

Any ideas? Anyone ?

bug when i reboot HOST

0
0

Good morning all ,
Here I have a concern about VMWARE PLAYER 16:
After installing VMWARE PLAYER 16 on my HOST WIN 10 pro x64 machine, created a GUEST virtual machine running WIN10 pro x64 too so that I can run 2 games simultaneously, I have a problem when I REBOOT my HOST PC.

Here are the explanations: I create my virtual machine with the VMWARE TOOLS drivers installed in order to be able to activate the 3D accelerator and be able to play on it.

Everything works flawlessly, no lag (60fps), I can restart the VMWARE PLAYER 16 software, restart the VM as well as the games and everything goes without any problems.
But, when I restart my HOST PC, I restart the software, the VM, the games running at 60 fps, after a few seconds the game slows down to about 5-10 fps and becomes unplayable without getting any error message.

Here is my HOST config as well as the GUEST:

HOST

Intel i7-8700K
16GB of 3200Mhz RAM
RTX 2080super 8Go OC rogg strixx
SSD and 1 M2 hard drives
OS: Win 10 pro x64

GUEST

Number of processor cores allocated: 3
Allocated RAM: 4 GB
GPU allocated: 2 GB
3d accelerator enabled
OS: WIN 10 pro x64
Allocated Disk Space: 60GB

Here are the manipulations I was able to perform:

Repair VMWARE PLAYER 16 via control panels: the problem persists
Repair VMWARE TOOLS: the problem persists
Uninstall VMWARE PLAYER 16 and reinstall it: the problem persists
Uninstall VMWARE TOOLS and reinstall it: the problem persists
Activate the 3d accelerator and reactivate it afterwards: the problem persists
Delete the VM and recreate it: the problem persists
Use another OS (WIN 7 PRO): the problem persists

I changed the settings in the VM : more processor cores , RAM , RAM GPU : the problem persists

I also configure my AVAST PRENIUM anti-virus, in the settings, there is a checkbox "activate hardware virtualization assistance" but the problem persists.

I was able to test VMWARE WORKSTATION PRO 16 before all this and I encountered the same problem when I restart my HOST PC

I think something is happening when I restart my HOST machine but I don't know what, does anyone have a solution?

I provided the .log as well as the .vmx

Unfortunately I do not have the LOG as well and the VMX when it worked because I did not know the software well. Sorry

I hope I have put in enough detail for a solution.

Thank you all and see you soon I hope

P.S.

sorry for the translation but I'm not very good in English and for the possible double post

HD resolution full screen guest on UHD resolution host - possible?

0
0

Hi,

I have a laptop with UHD screen - native resolution 3840 x 2160.

Host is Win10 x64 Pro, guest is Win7 x64 Pro.

Inside the guest I have software that can't be used on high-resolution screens (Siemens TIA Portal).
So I need the guest to have HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, but to keep the native 3840 x 2160 resolution of the host.

Is that possible?

If I reduce the host resolution to 1920 x 1080 , the guest looks OK - but the host does not.
If I keep the host at 3840 x 2160, and reduce the guest resolution to 1920 x 1080 - the guest becomes small, takes only 1/4 of the screen.

So is it somehow possible to keep the high resolution for the host and see the guest in full screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution?

Thanks

How to Fix VT-X Is Not Available Error on Windows 10?

0

I went through many forums and discussions to find solutions for fixing the VT-X Is Not Available error on Windows 10 computer. And, then landed on this page  - Fix VT-X Is Not Available Error.

And it really helped me to fix the error on my computer. So, these are the methods that are given in this guide:

  • Disable the Hyper-V Virtualization
  • Disable the Core Isolation of Windows Defender
  • Enable Avast's Nested Virtualization Feature
  • Uninstall 3rd Party Antivirus Tool From Your Computer
  • Enable the VT-X in BIOS Settings

In my case, the last solution did work to fix the error. I hope this will help the users going through this error.

Workstation Player 16 not booting GNS3 VM (Hyper-V/CG issue)

Good morning,

I had a GNS3 VM running on VMWare Workstation Player 16 (build-16894299) and last week it was working and this is not. My Guest OS is Windows 10 Enterprise (1909). I got the error of incompatibility with Hyper-V/Credential Guard, even when I have both disabled (Group policies changed, hypervisorlanchtype off and disabled from Windows features). Does anyone know what is happening? Is the 1909 Windows version not compatible anymore?

Thanks in advance. Regards,

Javier

Micosoft Teams black screen when sharing

I am using VMWare Player 16 with Windows 10 20H2 host and guest and latest Office components including Microsoft Teams, with Hyper-V.

When sharing a PowerPoint file (not the screen or the PowerPoint window, the file sharing functionality), each slide will show for a moment when changing page and then disappears leaving the screen as black. I have tested both when sharing starts from another user or when I am sharing the content from my VM. All the other functionalities (webcam display, screen sharing, etc.) work correctly. I don't have any other issues with the other programs I have tested up to now (mainly Office and web browsing).

If a run with the same OS configuration, but with a VM directly on Hyper-V, everything works correctly, both with the advanced session connection and RDP.

I am not sure if this is an issue with Microsoft Teams or VMWare, but it seems anyway to be connected with the interaction of that SW with the display driver used by VMWare. The timings of the slide becoming black change, sometimes it starts to be black only in part of the slide. Seems an issue related to caching of the shown bitmap that gets lost somehow.

Does someone know any workaround to solve this issue?

A couple questions with Upgrading

I have VMWare Workstation Workstation Player 16 installed and have been considering upgrading to Workstation 16 Pro. I can't seem to find these questions answered on the FAQ or anything on the page.

If I go to into the Workstation Player > Help > Upgrade to VMWare Workstation Pro I get 3 options. New, Upgrade From Workstation Pro or Player 14 or Greater, Upgrade from Workstation 16 Player. Whats the difference and which one should I get? Im using Player 16 the Free version as it's just for personal use. Which one

Second question is how long does this license last and what happens to my license if/when they move to version 17?

USB webcam not working in macOS guest

I have a Logitech USB webcam, and I'm trying to get it to work on a macOS Big Sur guest. It connects successfully to the VM, and when I open an app that  us the camera the light on the camera turns on, but the app on the guest says there is no video coming from the camera. Is there any fi for this? I have tried a different webcam to no success, and i have tried rebooting several times. Any help greatly appreciated.

VmPlayer: Win 10 Host + Ubuntu 20.04 Guest screen blinking

Hi everyone! I/m using VmWare Player 16 on Windows 10 host and Ubuntu 20.04 as a guest. When I moved my VMs to new laptop (Dell 5411 10850H + MX250 GPU) I faced annoying issue - My VM screen blinking, flickering or i don't know how to name it. i'll try to explain:

When I click it different part of windows it becomes lighter or darker, imagine that you plays with contrast very fast.

It doesn't depends on which monitor i used VM (external or internal).

OpenVM tools are installed.

Is there any iseas how to solve this issue. I had this VM on two laptops berfore, but only with UHD graphics, nothing like this happens.

Connect guest machine directly to modem and to LAN via dual NIC?

I have very little experience with VMs and networking but I feel like this should be possible but have no idea what I'm doing so thought I'd ask for some help or opinions.

I have a normal PC running windows 10 that I use as a home server (Plex, backups, Webserver, game servers, etc...) with VMware Player (free version).

The system currently has 3 Network adapters, an onboard NIC and a dual port NIC in PCI slot.

I also have the netgear CM1200 modem with 4 ports.

My desire is to connect a VM running on the system to my LAN and a separate direct connection to the internet via the PCI NIC.

Really, I want one NIC for the HOST only, One for guest LAN only and 3rd for guest internet only.

I managed the host and guest effectively using their own NIC to LAN but if I add the direct connection to the modem in anyway it seems to prevent all connectivity to the VM.

Some things,

Seeing as I didn't build the system for this, pretty sure I don't have the ability to do PCI passthough.

With the direct to modem connection added to VM, ipconfig shows irregular IPs (subnetmask 255.255.0.0) and no gateway.

ipconfig on host shows a proper connection on the direct to modem line.

Thanks for any ideas!

P.S. A recommendation to more appropriate forums is also welcome.

Connecting networks inside guest VM

Hi everybody,

I am a hardware engineer with good programming skills and intermediate networking knowledge in industrial environment (so it is Windows, Linux, PLC, embedded devices, virtual machines...) and came across an interesting issue which is driving me crazy since a few days.

I couldn't find info about it anywhere on the internet (this forum included), and also a lot of experimenting didn't bring any success.

I will describe my setup and the issues i have, maybe someone else has faced the same problem and can help (or maybe we can work together at it).

The host pc is a Win10 Pro machine and is quite restricted by domain policy.

One of the restrictions is that Internet Connection Sharing is disabled.

My company IT will not change it, they are really strict on that (also because it's not a work related issue).

My IoT device is Ethernet only and I can connect it to the Internet only through the laptop Ethernet (the hotel has only WiFi Internet in the rooms). WiFi for this device is not an option.

My VM is a VMware Player machine with 2 network adapters, since I already know that with multiple network connection it is necessary to avoid automatic bridging.

Therefore, I have removed my Ethernet and the WiFi adapters from VMnet0 and assigned them to VMNet3 and 2 respectively.

My VM has 2 network adapters, which I have connected to VMnet2 (direct bridging to host WiFi) and VMnet3 (direct bridging to host Eth port) respectively.

Guest operating system is Win10 Pro.

When I am able to connect the VM to Internet with direct bridging (VMNet2) I can enable ICS and everything works fine.

But when I am forced to use NAT, my device cannot connect to the Internet in any way.

I have tried to:

-disconnect, reconnect, enable, disable the connections in all possible sequences: no luck.

-use network bridging instead of ICS: no luck.

-restart VMware NAT and DHCP services: no luck.

-clear all routing / arp info: no luck.

-use of static or automatic IP addresses doesn't change anything.

AFAIK, the NAT/direct bridging of the host WiFi is 100% external to the VM, so why does it stop working when i (have to) use NAT?

IMHO this should work seamlessly also with NAT.

Conversely, when i try to use VMnet2 (direct bridging) I don't understand why the hotel router doesn't serve its connection request as it would do for a physical device.

I hope that a solution can be found. Thanks and regards,

Michael
