Problem with keymap, Windows host, Linux guest

I am using vmware right now to run different linux guests inside windows.

Windows 7 64 bit

Ubuntu 9.10

Ubuntu 10.04

Archlinux

Computer: Acer aspire 5739G

In all 3 virtual machines there is a problem with keymap when running in unity mode.

Certain key combinations with Alt gr are not working. So it is not possible to write \ | @.

I have seen posts where people having the problem on Linux hosts have solved this by adding keys manually in /etc/vmware.

But since I am using a windows host, I don't know how to make a similar fix.

The key combinations work with no problem when running in windowed mode instead of unity mode. But since I really like unity mode it would be nice to make it work there.

I have tried using official vmware-tools and open-vm-tools on fresh installations of all 3 distros and the problem is present in all scenarios.
