Serial port hell

Hello, I am very new to the whole VM environment. I have software that only works on XP 32. It is Building Management System software. The PC communicates to the equipment via RS-485 connected to the PC with a RS-485 to RS-232 converter. My goal is to install a VM image on one of my company's servers and get rid of the pc it now runs on. So I figured it should be easy, a RS-485 to Ethernet server and I would be done. The software does allow for the use of RS-485 or RS-232 via a option when selecting which serial port you use. I have been able to get the system to run using a VM player  with a image of virtual XP running using the real comport. One the things I am having trouble with is the software Carrier Comfort Network replaces the standard xp driver with a modified driver. It does replace the driver in the control panel of the virtual XP machine. So here is my dilemma, How do I redirect the serial server on the host to the virtual RS-232 port in the control panel in the VM. I have tried both RS-485 and RS-232 converters-servers, but I cant seem to get it working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Howard
