A bunch of updates showed up yesterday for the kernel, DKMS, and some nvidia packages. After rebooting, I can login but Unity desktop session never loads. No icons, etc. Just the desktop background image.
I decided to try a terminal with CTRL+ALT+F1, which complains that the vmware tools failed to load. Also, I can't login. It won't accept my username and password. Also tried login as guest or root but it won't accept my password or blank password for either account. So I have no ability to diagnose/fix this with terminal commands. Can't even look at /home to see what my username is...
This VM was created with the easy install method. Does it generate a different username that I need to use?
