Running a Virtual Machine from a USB 3.0 SSD hard-drive extremely slow

Hi

I'm using VMPlayer to run a Windows 7 machine on an HP EliteBook 8570w (i7) with 16 GB RAM and a 256GB internal SSD drive.

When I use VMPlayer (I tried version 5 and 7, same result) to run a Virtual Machine with Windows 7, that is located on my internal SSD hard-drive, the performance is great. But since my VM's tend to be large (~50GB) and I like to run multiple releases next each other, I tried a standard USB 3.0 external hard drive. The performance was OK but just not good enough. So I decided to buy a  512 GB USB 3.0 SSD hard-drive. But I'm very disappointed in the performance. The performance seems a factor 100 or so slower. It takes minutes to boot and also minutes to shut down while it supposed to boot in 10 seconds or so. It's simply unworkable. When I check the disk with HD Tune Pro, everything seems to be fine. It looks to me there is some kind of setting wrong. Anybody experience with this?
