Player upgrade vs Mint 14 Cinnamon

After upgrading to Player 5.0.2 this morning, my workhorse Linux Mint 14 32bit Cinnamon became unusable- not responsive to mouse clicks. Fortunately, Ctrl-Alt-F1 works so I got to experiment from an alternate console. Gnome logins work OK.

After much, much experimentation on that VM, I installed a fresh player VM with a straight-up install of Mint 14.1 32bit Cinnamon from the ISO image. When it was finished, installed vmware tools, rebooted, ran updates, rebooted, and reinstalled tools. Mouse worked fine on the new VM until the reboot on the last updates. Now that VM's Cinnamon login doesn't have a functional mouse either. Again Gnome Classic works OK.

I've tried many things on the first VM today: dpkg-reconfigure of cinnamon, purged and re-installed cinnamon, moved aside all my home dir config files, running cinnamon-config from Gnome, tried different sessions, etc. I can log into Cinnamon on both VM's but then it is stuck, the mouse moves but cannot activate any menus, right click, desktop icons, nothing. Gnome Classic works OK on both.

Since the Cinnamon mouse problem recurred the moment the new install was done updating, I can only think that either Cinnamon is broken or the latest updates to it are incompatible with Player 5.0.2.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas for workarounds?
