Disabling Always On Top Behavior (Windows Host)

I need to switch often between host and guest machines and with the latest Windows build (2.5.1-build 126130) , the player window is always on top and I have to manually minimize it.  Is there a fix for this or a setting that I cannot seem to find.  I don't have this problem at all with a Linux host.  My Windows hosts are 64-bit Vista and Windows 7.  Same behavior on both.

Just installed VMware player 5.0.0 on a windows 7 host to run a win2k guest OS.  Going to install VMware tools, the setup program begins as expected but delivers the error dialog, "Setup was unable to upgrade the windows installer" and quits.  How can I proceed to install VMware tools?

See attached screenshot.

Thanks in advance.

VMWare Tools - Control Center Removed?

Does anyone know how to open the VMWare Tools Control Center in VMWare Tools 9.2.0 (the update that came with VMPlayer 5).  The system tray icon only has "About" in it's menu.  In VMWare Tools 8.8.x there was a menu item to open the control center.

Best balance for number of cores?

Hi, I have an Intel core i7 processor with 4 cores or 8 hyperthreaded (logical) cores in one socket and 6 GB ram.

What is the best setting for VMware Player 5.0 for number of cores if I want to run Windows 7 Pro x64 as the host OS and Windows 7 Pro x64 as the guest OS.  I am using the Windows 7 guest to do development in a number of different configurations of SQL server 2008 and 2012 with VS2010 and VS2012.

Also, it I am a bit confused when VMware Player asks for number of cores.  Is that physical cores (ie. 4 for an i7) or hyperthreaded cores (ie. 8 for an i7)?

Thanks for any feedback or help you can provide.

VMware Player 5 running Windows 8 no longer supports accelerated OpenGL graphics

Hello,

I created a virtual machine for Windows 8 Home, using VMware Player 4, and installed and ran our application sucessfully - running acellerated OpenGL graphics.  Upgraded to VMware Player 5, and the graphics are no longer accelerated. I have no opinion on Direct X.

I just thought I'd report this, to see if I'm the only one noticing this, or perhaps to log a bug.

Thanks

Networking \w SBS 2008

I need to setup a virtual client that runs Small Business Server 2008. This VM will be stored on an external HD and connected to two different hosts each running Win 7 x64. Now the tricky part is that SBS2008 insists on being a DHCP but I have already a DHCP on the network which I can't turn off. Further, I need to be able to get on the internet from SBS2008. So on one side the VM should be isolated as it wants to be a DHCP but at the same time I need access to the internet. How do I set this up properly?

HCMON - "\Driver\asmtxhci"

I am experiencing warnings in my event viewer every time I boot my PC.

  • I have a new EVGA X79 motherboard
  • It contains the ASMedia ASM1042 chipset for USB 3.0 support
  • Running VMWare Player 4.0.3
  • Source: hcmon; Warning: Detected unrecognized USB driver "\Driver\asmtxhci"
  • Source: hcmon; Warning: Detected unrecognized USB driver "\Driver\pci"

I believe the HCMON service is from VMWare. Any suggestions how I can resolve the warnings would be greatly appreciated!

How to deinstall VMware Player inside a virtual machine

Hi all,

I have a Windows XP System which was converted to a virtual machine using MS disk2vhd.

It had the VMware Player installed.

Now I want to remove it from the virtualized system, but the installer won't let me because it doesn't like vmware to be installed inside a virtual machine. But I want to deinstall and not install..

How do I remove it?

I can't re-virtualize the system cause the physical system doesn't exit anymore.

Thanks,

James

How to disable options in preferences.ini with the epoch number?

I am trying to install VMware Player (5.0.0) silently and ready to go.  I copied the preferences.ini file for a running Player from the %AppData% VMware folder and placed it into the new folder after install.  In it are these lines:

pref.autoSoftwareUpdatePermission.epoch = "4799"
pref.autoSoftwareUpdatePermission = "deny"

pref.dataCollectionEnabled.epoch = "4799"
pref.vmplayer.dataCollectionEnabled = "FALSE"

I want these options as shown but each time I do an install, the epoch numbers are different and the options are again enabled.  I have tried using 0, 99999, null and cannot determine what the secret is.  Can anyone help?  Thanks and enjoy, John.

It seems that e-mail notifications quit working for me a few weeks ago.  The option is enabled for me.  Anyone else seen this or have a work around?  Thanks and enjoy, John.

Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-bloc(8,2)

I am a spanish speaker so excuse me for my bad english.

I am learning how to compile slackware kernel, so I have downloaded linux-3.2.7.tar.bz2 fromhttp://www.kernel.org

Conditions:

  • Slackware installed on a vmware virtual machine.
  • Host o.s windows 7.
  • Slackware root filesystem: ext4
  • Slackware old kernel: 2.6.37.6
  • Slackware partitions: sda1 for swapping, sda2 for the kernel.

Basically I have followed the following steps:

#cd /usr/src
#tar jvxf linux-3.2.2.tar.bz2
#mv /usr/src/linux /usr/src/linux.old
#ln -s /usr/src/linux-3.2.2 /usr/src/linux
#cd linux-3.2.2
#make mrproper
#cp /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.6/.config /usr/src/linux-3.2.2/.config
#make menuconfig

Load an alternate configuration file: .config INCLUDED (OPTION Y):

ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED) (at Device drivers)
SCSI generic support (at Device drivers)
second extended support (at filesystems)
ext3 journaling (all)
ext4 (all)
ext4 (at filesystems)
JBD (ext4) debuggin support
JBD2 (ext4) debugging support
ReiserFS support
XFS filesystem support
"compile kernel with debug info" (at kernel hacking)

make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
mv /boot/System.map /boot/System.map.old
cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-3.2.2
ln -s /boot/System.map-3.2.2 /boot/System.map
mv /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.2
ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.2 /boot/vmlinuz
nano -w /etc/lilo.conf

ADDED THE FOLLOWING LINES:

image=/boot/vmlinuz.old
label = oldSlack
root = /dev/sda2
read-only

#lilo
#lilo -q
#shutdown -r now

When kernel 3.2.2 is booting, it stops showing the following:

VFS: Cannot open root device "802" or unknown-block(8,2)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-bloc(8,2)

I hate this message because I have recompiled the kernel many times, and after hours of compilation I always get this message.

Can anyone help me to understand what I am doing bad or why is that error?ERROR-PANIC.png

Parameter pref.autoFitGuestToWindow = "false" does not work

$

I am using VMware Player 5.0.0 build-812388, host Windows 7 32-bit, guest Ubuntu 12.04

Setting the parameter pref.autoFitGuestToWindow = "false" either in the vmx file or config.ini does not make any difference in how the VM behavies. I would like to set my gest screen resolution to a fixed value, the same resolution of the host no matter if I am in full screen or not. This seems to work as long as I don't manually resize the VMware Player window. In other words, when I enter or exit full screen the guest resulution keep unchanged as I want, however if I maximize the VMware Player window or resize it manually, the resolution of the guest is automatically adjusted to the new window size. After this happens once, it keeps changing resolution also every time I enter or exit full screen untill I reboot the VM. Adding or removing the parameter pref.autoFitGuestToWindow = "false" either in the vmx file or config.ini does not make any difference.

Is this normal or a bug?

Thanks

Linux Fedora Core 14 guest fail to boot after upgrading vmware player to 5.0 on win7 host

Hello,

I would like to report this here in order to understand if somebody else found similar error and might help me to recover.

Anyway, I need some help with answers to a few questions related to vmware and how can I take control in order to debug the linux.

I am not a Vmware or Linux expert, I was trying to playwith/learn Linux having it installed on my Win7 host computer without making a dual boot so if you will try to help me please don't do it at a too high level.

I had a few configuration scripts and a lot of documentation and trials under that Linux VM that I would like to recover.

I had this Linux installed some time ago, under Vmware Player 3.0 and all the vmware upgrades until now gave me no problem. The last one, about one month ago, to vmware player 5.0, apparently went smooth but let the fedora core 14 linux VM with the following boot error:

[     1.547367]     RAMDISK: EOF while reading compressed data

[     1.547768]     uncompression error

[     1.637775]     Kernel panic  -  not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

[     1.637968]     Pid:  1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.35.14-106.fc14.x86_64 #1

[     1.638123]     Call Trace:

..........................................

If required, you can see the rest of the messages in the attached image file. I can not use copy paste because the vmware player window seems frosen and I just can take control in order to power off the VM. Apparently I can't do anything else so, attached the shotscreen.

What I would like to know is:

1. Did anybody experienced similar problem?

2. If yes, did you find a solution to recover?

3. If no, how can I debug this installation? As far as I know, when linux fails in this mode you can try various things like repairing from a dvd or, if available taking text line control and reinstalling the kernel. Is this possible under vmware player? The vmware player window seems frozen in the attached file shown configuration. If I click inside the window, the mouse cursor disappears and can't do anything else except powering off the VM.

I took a look at the linux files under vmware filestructure but as far as I can understand they do not show the linux file structure that probably is embeded. Can I debug somehow starting from the original fc14 vm image that I installed initially?

Thank you very much for your help.

Victor

VMware Player 5 Tries to Install 32bit Version on Windows x64 Host

I downloaded VMware-player-5.0.0-812388.exe which is supposed to be:

VMware Player for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit.exe Installation file for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows

I started the installation process and responded to the UAC prompt.  Pressed Next and was then asked to pick a folder to install into with the default being:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\

This indicates that the installer was about to install a 32Bit version.

How do I get the installer to install the 64Bit version?

Network Issues

I have Windows Small Business Server 2008 x64 as a client VM running on Win 7 x64. On the VM

* Under Network and Sharing Center it says "Not connected" with a red x between "This computer" and "Internet"

* Under "Device Manager" I can see "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection".

* Under "Network Connections" I see "Local Area Connection, Network cable unplugged, Intel(R)....". The properties for this connection are obtaining IP address and DNS server automatically.

Virtual machine Settings are set to

* Device status - Connected - checked

* Device status - Connect at power on - checked

* Network connection: NAT: Used to share the host's IP address

In the Virtual Network Editor I have VMnet0/1/8. Settings for VMnet8 are:

* Type = NAT

* External Connection = NAT

* Host Connection = Connected

* DHCP = Enabled

* Subnet Address = 192.168.189.0

* Connect a host virtual adapter to this network is checked

* Use local DHCP service to distribute IP address to VMs is checked (DHCP range is 128 - 254)

On the host the properties of VMware Network Adapter VMnet8 are:

* Client for Microsft Networks: checked

* VMware Bridge Protocol: unchecked (also tried checked)

* Virtual Machine Network Services: not checked

* File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks: checked

* Internet Protocol Version 6: checked

* Internet Protocol Version 4: checked (IP address=192.168.189.1, subnet mask=255.255.255.0, default gateway:empty,DNS server addresses: empty)

Based on this can somebody tell me why my client shows "Network cable unplugged" and explain how I can get an internet connection from the VM.

VMware Player 5, Linux Host - 3D Support?

$

Hi Everyone,

I'm having some difficulty with enabling 3D hardware acceleration using VMware Player 5 (5.0.0 build-812388)

My host is a Fedora 17 desktop on a Dell Optiplex 7010 running kernel 3.5.3-1 x86_64

As far as I can tell, my host has 3D acceleration:

glxinfo | grep renderer

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Desktop

glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes

running glxgears gives me a nice smooth 60fps (locked to monitor refresh rate).
The VM is set to use 3D acceleration, but when I start the machine it informs me the host does not have 3D acceleration.
Can anyone point me towards anything else I can check to get this working? Is it simply a case of my hardware being unsupported for 3D?

Thanks in advance..

Can't kill vmware-vmx.exe

First of all, registering here was horrible agony. But before we talk about that, let's solve this issue first.

So I'm trying to install Windows 7 Professional on a virtual machine. It installs, but eventually, the player gets stuck on the first boot menu. The one where it says "Press F2 for setup" and such. The vmplayer.exe and vmware-vmx.exe processes will NOT end. I have tried EVERYTHING! Taskkill.exe doesn't work, PSkill doesn't work, Task Manager doesn't work, nothing works! The processes will just sit there and render VMWare player useless until I reboot my PC! (Which I can't even do without holding the power button, it's stuck on trying to close VMWare player forever)

This occurs when I tell the guest Windows to reboot.

Any help with this?
