VMware Player 5.0.0 Win 8 x64 - performance issues

$
0
0

HOST:

I am running player 5.0 in Windows 8 MDSN x64

VM:

The VM I am running is XP x86

This VM is a very light install with no startups and no AV

ISSUE:

When I am trying to work in the VM, it is intermittently, cyclically, unresponsive. No errors, just that I cant click on anything for about 5 secs at a time, and then it runs fine for about 15 secs, then another 5 secs of not being able to do anything, and so it goes. It runs stable, no issues, but its like its 'thinking' on and off and I cant do anything at all with it when its unclickable.

I am using the VM for graphics work in Adobe Fireworks, but it does it without any applications running also, so not an issue with the guest software.

SETTINGS/HARDWARE:

I have set the VM's RAM to 2GB and the CPU is set to 2 cores (running on 4 core and 965 with 8gb DDR3).

I have enabled Virtualisation in BIOS

The host machine is not weighed down with anything much. I am running Norton - have tried disabling firewall and smart protect, but this does not produce any positive result in the VMs performance.

The HOST OS is installed on a SSD. I initially was running the VM from a phys disk, but tried swapping the files to the SSD in the hope that might get some performance benefit. It does not seem to have made any difference.

HELP!

I would really like to get this VM working as it has my Adobe licenses on it and I need it for the work I am doing.

I have exhausted my limited knowledge, and am hoping someone in the Community might see something here that I am missing.

Thanks for any input

Jim

Need help to get 2 VMWare Player sessions to see each other

I am new to VMWare and am trying to use it to study for an MCTS exam. I am using Windows 7 as the host and have two VMware player sessions each with Windows Server 2008 installed. I can not ping the other session or the IP for the host computer. I am running this disconnected from any network. I've tried all the Player settings except LAN Segment with no luck. Can someone give me instructions on how to configure both the host computer and the VMWare Players so that they can all talk to each other?

How to show current Vmware Tools version in CentOS guestOS?

After installation of new v5.0.0. VmWare Player on Win7 hostOS I upgraded as well VmWare Tools in CentOS guestOS.

After that (and reboot) I wanted to check/verify the current installed version of VmWare Tools and entered (as usual in previous versions):

vmware-toolbox --version

Unfortunately the Terminal answered me: "Unknown command"

Whats wrong?

How else can I check the currently installed VmWare Tools version?

(changed from: Intel VT / VTx is disabled- even though enabled on BIOS)

Hi,

I swiched my Levenovo T-410 to another Lenovo T410 few days ago.

now my old Win8 VM (VMPlayer).

At first It says my Host Supports Intel VT, but that it's disabled. So I went to BIOS and Enabled it. It still says It's Disabled.

after trying to run the same VM on VirtualBox (sorry ) IT changed the error, but still the same one (because i know this is)

"Your PC needs to be restarted. .....Error code: 0x0000005D."

Anyone had it before?

Hi,

I downloaded VMPLayer 5.0.0 yesterday and installed it. The installation seemed to go just fine. When I tried to start the Win7 image, I got a message stating the VCMI was at version 10 and and player needed it to be at version 11. Did something get missed on the installtion process that I need to look for? Any assistance would be approeciated.

My configureation:

player 5.0.0 build-812388 window 7 host general bridged network problem in guest: dns don't work

$

Hi,

I just migrated from player 3.0 to 5.0.0, and before, all work fine.

As explain in title, my vms with bridged network don't resolve dns name. Internet don't work. with nat, no problem. The host network connexion is wifi.

I can ping directly an IP adress but not directly an www! DNS is correctly configured, change bridged to nat resolve the issue. But, I would use bridged.

"VMware KB: Troubleshooting network connection failures" don't resolve my issue.

I have forced the adapter in network configuration: same problem.

I have tested with vmnetcfg.exe to force the adapatater in bridge-mode: same problem.

I have desinstall-reinstall bridge-service as describe in "VMware KB: Troubleshooting network connection failures": same problem.

No more idea to resolve this issue!!!!

Somebody can help me to resolve this???

thank's

During updating to VMware Player 4.0.3 I get this compile error for vmnet-only. I found a patch for 4.0.2 and a similar compile error for the last update to 4.0.2 but not for the current version 4.0.3. Any hints?

VMware 4.0.4 hangs on 64-bit Ubuntu12.04 installation (Windows 7 host)

$

The place where I work uses Windows 7 64-bit, and VMware Player to run an Ubuntu Installation. We recently switched over to 12.04, and there are many issues that have come up, namely that the installation hangs halfway through and never completes.
When installing off of an iso from the windows side it always hangs at:
"retrieving file 55 of 129"
^this happens whether or not the VMware tools are preinstalled (by going to File>Player preferences>Download all components now)
In response I burned the iso to a disc and installed from it. The regular desktop version (ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso) did not complete install, but the alternate version (ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso) was successful (but only when the tools were preinstalled). This is good, but not ideal, since installation from a disc takes significantly longer than from a file already on the host machine.
The goal here would be to find the reason it is hanging and prevent it or work around it. Its always at the same point, so its probably the same issue each time.
The install disc that did not work during install through VMware player actually did work when installing without VMware player on another machine (partitioned the C drive).
I am using a Dell with Xeon W3540 processor and 6GB of RAM. I configure the virtual machines with 2GB of RAM and 4 cores.
Also, the place I work has an http proxy server set up, I don't think that matters because there was never an issue creating an Ubuntu installation on a VM behind it before.
Please comment if you have an idea of how to work towards the goal, or if you think i should include more/different information.

Avoid Autoadapt Screen resolution on VmWare Player

Hi to all,

I'm running Windows 2000 sp4 (Guest) on Vmware Player 2.5, in a Laptop with Windows XP sp 2 installed (Host).

In that Virtual machine I need to have a fixed resolution of 1024768,but when I enter to full-screen mode the palyer automatically resize the resolution to that of the Host (16801050).

The same happens if I resize the window manually with the mouse.

Checking on the forums I found out the possibility to set in the .vmx file the two rows:

svga.maxWidth = "1024"

svga.maxHeight = "768"

The strange thing is that trying the same Virtual machine with a VmWare Server 1.0.7 in another pc it works properly.

Does anyone know how I could solve the problem?

Thanks in advance

Cannot get vmware tools to install

Running win7 64bit as host, ubuntu 12.04.1 as guest. When choosing to Reinstall VMWare Tools the cdrom image does not get mounted. Checked with mount command, its not there. Try to manually mount (sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom) won't mount...says it is at first read-only, but then complains of unknown filesystem type...checking with dmesg | tail gives:

[ 1264.020860] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
So anyone have any ideas?

The File Specified Is Not A Virtual Disk

$

I have just installed a Win Server OS on a VM and after some testing activated (through Microsoft) it. I then made a backup copy of the complete directory. I also deleted the original VM and copied the backup back again. Everything is exactly in the same directory with the same names. However, when I now try to start the VM I get a "Error while powering on: The file specified is not a virtual disk". I did check the forums and based on that checked the vmx file.

* The scsi0:0.fileName looks correct with no numbers for slices. Also, I am just using one big file rather than multiple small ones.

* I checked the log files but there are only older entry and none at the time when I tried to start the VM.

* In File Explorer I see that a directory "[VMName].vmx.lck" is being created but it immediately is being deleted again.

* I see the file [VMName].vmsd with a size of 0.

* Besides the vmdk, vmxf and nvram there is also a directory caches with many files in it.

* The VMDK file does not start with KDMV but I find that string starting at byte 32.

* I am using VMware Player 5.0.0 build-812388

* In the settings I get the same error when clicking on the HD. I deleted it and tried to create a new HD using the existing vmdk file but get the same error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

after upgrading to OpenSUSE 12.2 the VMPlayer starts only as root. If I try to start as a normal user the installer tries to recompile all kernel modules.

Player Hangs After Reboot of WinXP on Win7

$

I've installed VMWare Player 5 on Win7 and created a WinXP virtual machine. And now whenever I go to reboot the WinXP, when it comes back up, the Player hangs with about 75% of the first scroll bar. I've let it sit for at least an hour. The only way I've found to get the WinXP back up and running is to reboot Win7, manually stopping the Player.

Any suggestions?

Install VMwareTools fails:

Could not find component on update server. Contact VMware Support or your system administrator.

Google has no answers. Its obviously a strange fault.

any hints? Thx!

The same guest runs on another host, a OpenSuse 10.1, 32 Bit, same Player but 32Bit, same VIX (i386). On this host no error appears, vmware tools are possible to install (at the moment problems to mount the iso ... because of another DVD-ROM device sr0 -> hda , but will be no problem) . It seems to be a problem of the guest.

How do I install Browser Appliance v10.0 into VMware Player?

$

0

Hi,

I need some help/advice please,

I have trying to install Browser Appliance v10.0 into VMware Player without success despite trying for countless hours over the past five days, this software is certainly not newbie friendly:)

.

I can't locate the "dialog box browse for virtual machine configuration" button which is part of the instructions below

I've tried lots of different ways to try and install it into VMware Player over the last five days but nothing seems to work, I have installed Ubuntu into VMware Player then tried to find a way to install Browser Appliance into Ubuntu but nothing is working.

Here are the insructions I received with Browser Appliance v10.0 which I downloaded onto my pc which are outdated maybe?.....

Browser Appliance, v10.0 -- README

* Virtualization by VMware
* Operating System by Scientific Linux (release 6.0)
* Browser by Mozilla (Mozilla Firefox 10.0)

SUMMARY:

This virtual machine provides a secure, isolated environment in
which to browse the Web.

It may be run using either the freely available VMware Player
or other fourth generation VMware vPlatform products.

It was inspired by the Browser Appliance 1.0.0 provided by
VMware Inc. at http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/80

NOTES:

This virtual machine includes the VMware Tools
(vmware-tools-8.3.12-559003) with Scientific Linux 6.0,
kernel 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6, updates to Scientific Linux through
February 6, 2012, and Mozilla Firefox 10.0.

Power Users may wish to review and adjust several parameters in
the Browser-Appliance.vmx configuration file using a text
editor. For security reasons, HGFS was disabled by default.

USING THE BROWSER APPLIANCE:

You can download the Browser Appliance from the VMware website
at http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/507083 .
From the same website, you can also download VMware Player, a
free VMware application that you can use to run the Browser
Appliance. To install the Browser Appliance, simply unzip the
download file on your local hard drive.

To run the Browser Appliance:
* Launch VMware Player
* In the dialog box Browse for Virtual Machine Configuration
File, browse to the directory where you installed the
Browser Appliance, select the file Browser-Appliance.vmx,
 and click Open.
The Browser Appliance powers on automatically, and the
CentOS operating system, provided with the Browser Appliance,
boots up. This may take several minutes. Then the Mozilla
Firefox browser starts automatically. Enter a URL in the
location field at the top of the browser and click Go.,

VMware Player 5 doesn't start V.M. after upgarding to Ubuntu 12.04

Hi there,

I had my VMware Player 5 running on Ubuntu and it used to be all right (I used it to run Windows 7 on my 64-bit Ubuntu operating system). Just, since my Virtual Machine was splitted into two files (located in two different hard disks) sometimes upon opening my virtual machine I received warning from VMware Player that it can not find the second file, and asking me to browse to the second file. Then, I browse to the second file and it could find it and every thing was all right and I could run my V.M.

Problem:

I have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 (my system in 64 bit). Now, I open VMware Player 5 and try to run my virtual machine. But when I select my V.M., as soon as I press "Play virtual machine" the VMware Player closes and disappears.

I have tried it several times without any success. I have tried to use "open virtual machine" to open my V.M. but again after pressing "Play virtual machine", VMware Player crashes and disappears.

I very appreciate your help on this.

Thanks,

Amir

Hi,

I can't connect to the Internet using vmware Player with Browser Appliance v10.0 and will like some advice in how to achieve this result.

I had Ubuntu installed in vmware Player previously and had no problems connecting so I assume I have to activate something in the Browser Appliance v10.0?

It shows "not connect to network" in vmware Player/ Browser Appliance v10.0

I was able to connect using Ubuntu and didn't have to activate anything or configurate anything which I suspect I have to do in this case but unfortunetly I don't know how to go about doing this and will like advice please, any advice will be much apprecited. Thanks

Mapping serial ports around

I've been searching, and probably not for the right thing, so I haven't found it. Hopefully, I'll explain what I'm looking for and somebody will give me the correct search phrase or a link.physical

I'm trying to use a very old piece of software that uses Physical Serial Ports within a VM. My latest PC (laptop) does not have a physical serial port that I can access (wrong docking station).

How can I configure the VM to provide a virtual physical serial port that I can map to the real serial port (that is a USB-Serial Dongle)?

Thanks in advance.
