Install a new machine by restoring a disk image

0
0

Hi

I am trying to install a new win 7 machine by restoring a previously create disk image with DriveImage XML

I create the machine and booted it with an Unltimate Boot CD iso which contains DriveImage XML as well as many other utilities

Now I need to select the iamge to be restored onto the newly create VMWare machine

The problem is that I can not access the image which reside on the host machine, as the VMWare tools are not installed yet.

Is there a solution for that?

VirtualBox to VMWare Player Migration - Network Int's

0
0

I've managed to migrate a Win2008 server from VirtualBox to VMWare Player but the latter will offer only VirtualBox Bridged miniports as network interfaces (which don't exist anymore) to my VMs.  The host OS is Win7-64.  Is there a way to tell Player to rediscover network interfaces?  I haven't uninstalled VB yet because I want to make sure I can get Player working first.  The interesting thing about this is that the VirtualBox miniports no longer are listed in my adapter list.  I need to bridge the VM to the network because I use it as a test authentication server and domain controller for network testing.  Please let me know how to get the bridged interfaces working correctly.

Thanks.

Anybody Using Multiple Alternate OS VMs as Primary Desktop Systems?

Hi, I have been using VMware Player on my Linux host system for a few years now to provide an alternate Windows XP desktop.  My everyday usage is primarily with the Linux host system, but there are some Windows-only applications I want to use so I usually have a WinXP vm running in the background for quick access to those programs.  This usage model has served my needs but I am curious if anyone is running a completely virtualized system where all of their multiple OS primary use desktops are running as Player or Workstation vms under a simplified "hypervisor" host OS (a Linux server OS maybe?)   Not sure if this really makes sense for home desktop use but I wanted to see if any others have gone down this road already.  Thanks in advance for any responses.

Using serial port with VMware Player

I've some reliability problems with serial port with VMware Player (on Windows system)

I must say that the application in virtual machine using serial port in very huge load because it communicates with PLC device every 100-200 milliseconds.

In this scenario, what are your suggestions about my questions:

  1. It's better using physical RS232 card port or USB-RS232 converter ?
  2. If i'm using USB-RS232 converter, it's better connect it to host machine (and then mapping) or connect it on virtual machine ?
  3. Are there some settings to increase reliability ?
  4. It's better using workstation instead player in this case ?
  5. Do you have physical RS232 card port or USB-RS232 converter 100% reliable to suggest me ?

Thanks for support,
Rinaldo

Pre allocate all required size to a new macchine

Hi

I am trying to load a disk image to a new VM

After creating the machine (without installing the OS) I boot the machine into a boot environment containing DriveImage XML

The image size was created from a 100GB disk.

But even though I set the disk size of the new machine to (max) 100G the actual size of the machine is only 12G

For that reason, I guess, trying to restore the image onto the new VM fail, as the actual disk size(12G)  is less than the image size (100G)

Is there a possibility to make the empty newly created VM size holds the full max size - 100G?

WHEA-Logger warnings only with VMWare Player

0
0

Since building my new Haswell 7x64 system on 6/26, I've found several warnings like this one in my Event Viewer log, and I've determined they coincide exactly with the times I ran VMs for Windows 8.1 and 7:

*****

Log Name:      System

Source:        Microsoft-Windows-WHEA-Logger

Date:          7/18/2013 1:31:03 PM

Event ID:      19

Task Category: None

Level:         Warning

Keywords:

User:          LOCAL SERVICE

Computer:      ---

Description:

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core

Error Source: Corrected Machine Check

Error Type: Internal parity error

Processor ID: 2

*****

The computer has been in heavy use 16 hours a day since I built it on 6/26. However, these warnings have been generated only during the times I was running VMs for Windows 8.1 and 7, and those times have been infrequent and of short duration, about a half dozen runs lasting five minutes or less each. This is documented conclusively by the VMWare logfiles, for the warning times are sandwiched between the VM start and stop times that appear in the logs. There were two such warnings when I discovered the issue on 7/14. While I can't consistently repro it, I managed to get two new warnings out of several attempts within the first few minutes of starting the VMs. I have no idea what aspect of using the VMs triggers it. I run the VMs in windows and never mess with the Unity mode. They are vanilla installs, new copies of VMs I built on my i5 750 system and archived for easy restoration, and basically I've just been verifying they work.

My system is as follows, and I am not now overclocking, nor have I ever overclocked anything:

i5 4670 and Hyper 212 Evo

Asus Gryphon Z87, BIOS 1007 and now 1206

Crucial Ballistix Sport 8 GB 1.35v DDR3-1600 DIMMs x 2, 16 GB total

Intel 4600 graphics -> monitor

Nvidia GT430 -> TV

Seasonic X650 PSU

Samsung 830 SSD boot drive, two 2 TB WD Green drives, all TrueCrypted. The VMs are on the SSD.

Windows 7 x64 w/ SP1, fully patched, installed 6/26

VMWare Player 5.0.2 build-1031769

I've observed Processor ID values of 0, 2, 4, and 6, which I don't understand as the CPU is quad-core with no hyperthreading.

The system is stable on Prime95, Aida64, and Intel Linpack, plus MemTest86+ 5.0 RC1. The stress tests do not provoke the warning, nor do they cause excessively high temps. CPU-intensive multitasking that uses all four cores such as transcoding video with Handbrake while doing network file copies or downloading from the Internet while watching video or browsing the web does not cause the warnings. The only thing that causes the warnings is running a VM in VMWare Player, and it tends to happen within the first few minutes, when CPU usage is nil.

I've had no BSODs or abnormal behavior of any kind; this new system has been great. That said, these warnings are still troubling. From googling, I've learned that overclockers commonly observe WHEA-Logger warnings when stressing the system under extreme overclocking, and they say the solution is usually more vCore. However, I'm not overclocking, and I don't think the 4670 is capable of it anyway. Besides, the warnings occur when my system is basically idle and only when running a VM in VMWare Player. They don't occur at any other times.

Has anyone heard of a problem like this with VMWare Player? Are there any Haswell users who don't observe this problem with VMWare Player?

How to Access a Host USB Virtual Serial Port from a VM Application?

I have a Linux VM running under VMware Player 5.0.2 on a Linux Host machine.   I have a development system running on the VM trying to download code to an external device connected via a Host USB virtual serial port (ttyACM0).   Anybody doing Arduino device programming is familar with my software/hardware config.  The VM dev system does not directly see the ttyACM0 port so it seems I need to establish some kind of bridge connection between the Host "ttyACM0" port and the VM-configured "ttySx" port?   Anybody done anything like this with a Player VM?

VMware Player 5.0.2 Does Not See Wireless Adapter

0

Hello guys,

I am having a problem with VMware Player 5.0.2 build-1031769 (the same existed with older versions of VMware Player 5 but this is the one I currently have).

The Player does not recognize my wireless adapter Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN on a Lenovo T410 laptop. I have another T410 with Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6200 AGN and it works fine.

Here are the symptoms:

- When I use NAT networking it works fine

- When I use bridged networking, the guest OS (in this case Windows XP) says that the cable is disconnected

- I found some threads saying that this might be a router issue but it is not because with the other laptop in the same network everything works fine

- When I connect to the network using LAN (cable) bridged connection works without a problem

- My network on the host OS works without any problem

- Windows recognizes the wireless adapter without any problem:

Device Manager.jpg

- VMware Player does not show the adapter in the bridging settings but shows some kind of Microsoft virtual adapter:

VM Bridging Settings.jpg

- When I run the Virtual Network Editor it is the same: no real adapter but the Microsoft virtual adapter

Virtual.jpg

- I tried resetting the network configuration to the defaults but this did not help

I am running Windows 8 Enterprise.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Why no USB 3 HDD win 8 Player 5

Successfuly installed Player 5 on win 7 x64 host.  I then created a win 8 guest vm with latest tools added.  OS seems to work ok, but...

It gives me a message upon load that my LaCie 2TB Minimus USB 3 external HDD is available from the tools bar.  It shows an icon for it which I right click then select "Connect(disconnect from host)".  However the LaCie connections fails.  It gives a message telling my that specifically my LaCie could not connect, but only then says "Driver error".  I've tried connecting both with the HDD already connected / disconnected to the host and get the same result.

I am new to vm's and vmware and cannot use vmware if I cannot get to my LaCie.  I intend on buying Workstation if I can get the basics working on Player.

VMWare Player - Cannot Connect to Own IP Address

0

Hello everyone,

I ran into an issue with my VMWare Player. I'm running a virtual Linux (Ubuntu) appliance called Openbravo 3.0 that, when running, requires me to access the appliance in my internet browser. The appliance's URL is supposed to be my IP address that is shown within my VM. However, my browser cannot connect to the IP address, yet my colleagues are able to (using my address). Furthermore, I am able to connect to my colleague's addresses, but not my own. I talked to my appliance administrators about it, and they are not sure of what's not allowing me to connect to my own VM ip address. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Guest/Player crash due to host 3D acceleration and keyboard input?!?

Hi folks,

Bit of an odd situation so bear with me.

Windows 7 x64 host running player 5.0.2

Has an Nvidia GeForce 310 (running current 2013/7 WHQL drivers)

Windows 7 x86 guest with latest VMware tools installed.

Google IME, Office IME 2007 installed

Microsoft Office 2013 installed

Open an office document in the guest, proceed to write a lot of two byte characters an IME. Between 0.5 and 1.5 pages of input, Player dies with a win32 error. Running the dump file through visual studio is fingering nvd3dum.dll as the culprit with a null pointer exception. Tried unchecking all 3D acceleration related settings, such as unity, for that guest, no dice. Tried killing off the unity helper process in the host after the guest has logged in, doesn't seem to make a difference. Regular player logs show it dying after switching from compositing to rendering, but the time stamp seems a little too far to say that is the direct cause.

Anyone ever encountered something like this before, and any possible workarounds?

Windows 2008 can not be booted in vmplayer 5

Hi All,

I used vCenter Converter to copy Windows 2008 R2 to target machine.  Target OS is Windows 7 64 bit.

The conversion was successful.

Then I tried to start Windows 2008 in Vmplayer 5.  A black screen appeared and gave error "operating system not found".

So I tried to start virtual machine and entered its Bios setup.  I were able to find "Hard Drive" and "VMware Virtual SCSI Hard Drive (0:0)" on the top of the list.

What could be the cause of "operating system not found" error?

Thanks a lot!

How to enable file sharing

Hey guys. So I recently downloaded VMware Player. My real computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium and the VMWare player is running Windows 8 PRO.

I went to the virtual machine settings and tried to enable file sharing for my "C" drive on my actual computer. It says it worked but for some reason I can't find the file on my Windows 8.

Any help?

P.S. I enabled the file and print share thing on both computers.

Installing vmware-tools on FreeBSD9.1-i386

Dear Friends,

I am new to vmware. I am trying to install vmware-tools on FreeBSD-9.1 (i386) in vmware-player (Version 5.0.2 build-1031769) on Windows7.

After mounting the vmware tools iso into this guest OS, I installed the vm-tools using vmware-install.pl. But, I am still not getting the features of vmware-tools working in this guest os.

Can you pls guide, where there are FreeBSD specific steps / configurations that we need to perform for correct vmware-tools installation?

Thanks in advance for your help and time.
