Can't connect removable devices

$

Hi,

I have to think this is a simple setting somewhere.  When I use the option to connect removable devices and select a device, it shows a dialog telling me that the main desktop will no longer be able to see it (and it can't), but does not attach the device to the VM.

I have installed what I believe to be the latest VMTools (the option now shows "reinstall").

I am running Win 8.1 64 on an ASUS z87-ws MB with an i7-4770 CPU and 16 GB ram.

Any thoughts?

Using Guest with Host VPN

I've tried googling, but only came up with answers that were a few years old, so I'm going to ask and hope someone has an updated answered.

Host machine is running Win7x64, and is connected via Windows VPN to work network.

Host IP is 192.168.1.10 (Home network, static), when connected via VPN, it's got a 192.168.0.x address (work network, dhcp)

Guest is running CentOS 6.4 via bridged, as it needs to have it's own ip address of 192.168.0.230.

What I'm trying to do is run the Guest OS on the Host machine while the Host is VPN'd to the work network, and have machines on the work network able to connect to the guest machine.

Currently, when I run the Guest OS, it's unable to ping out, either by dns or straight ip address.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to connect and function over the Host's VPN connection?

video under xp-32 guest

I have the following issue under vmplayer 6 with xp-32 installed as a guest (4gb ram):

while video plays fine in video players (win-mediaplayer and videolan) on the guest system, the videos will not play at all when to to be run as part of a different process, such as video editing software or as a preview within dvd copying software. Resolution and ram is not the issue (i am talking about low-res .mpg and .avi files in the  video editing software and a preview window of DvdFab software).

Both programs work fully and well on an ancient xp host system that has less ram allocated than the xp guest on my w-8 machine has.... so I wonder what the issue might be?

Slow, unsychronised crosshair cursor when using AutoCAD 2013 with VMware Player 5.0.2

Hi there,

I've been having this issue with my VM all week, my cursor tracks fine outside of AutoCAD 2013, and within AutoCAD it tracks fine when I'm using any cursor EXCEPT the big crosshair (so panning and navigating context menu's works fine - but drawing a line for example, is slow and unsynchronised - which on many occasions had lead me to minimizing my VM entirely - such a pain!)

I've done a little research, but the only similar issue I saw was in VMware Fusion, and I'm using VMware player 5.0.2 build-1031769, so I don't have (or can't find) "don't synchronize mouse for games" options.

any help with this would be great - AutoCAD is 95% of what I use the VM for, and it's getting really frustrating!

thanks in advance!

Need Help Expanding the / Partition - I Think

I'm doing some Perl development on a VM provided by a client. In order to get the VM small enough to send to me, my client pared it down to the bare minimum. So I guess it's not too big a surprise that when I needed to add some Perl modules from CPAN, that things went South. I tried using cpanm to install the Date::Time module. Then dpkg ran and apparently used up all the free space on /. So, I have a few questions:

1) How do I free the space consumed by dpkg?

2) Is there a better way to install the Perl modules I need?

3) How can I expand the / partition within the VM such that dpkg can finish it's work.

4) Is there a way to constrain dpkg so it does its work in chunks so it won't run out of space.j

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks,

Ray

Hello,

While tryng to update from VMplayer 6.0 to VMplayer 6.0.1, the following was prompted:

"Your hard drive is full. Free some space and try again"

But my hard drive is not full!:

Error when opening a virtual machine

I'm trying to open a virtual machine from VMware Player. I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise and the virtual machine would be linux.

When I import the .ova file, I get this error: "Failed to open virtual machine: Could not start import: failed to launch helper process."

Not sure what could be causing it, but I successfully installed this same system on my home computer. Any suggestions?

Also I'm sorry if I haven't included some information that would be useful. I'm just not sure what information I should include. If anything comes to mind, let me know and I'll add it.

Windows 8.1 no hibernate/shutdown...

VirtualBox wouldn't offer hibernate and need to test hibernate/resume from Windows 8.1 so trying vmware player but doesn't work either.   If I installed the client tools, I enable hibernation, but after reboot not available, so clear the software is doing something to prevent it.  I then uninstall tools and just go raw .. hibernate is enabled and available, try to use hibernate or shutdown when fastboot is enabled and the screen goes black, but never goes away.  The hiberfil.sys is never written.

Is this true of VMWare Workstation as well.  I need to do some testing and a VM would have made that easier than a physical machine, but looking more like I may have to do that unless someone has the answer?

TIA!!

VMX corrupt file

I have Windows 7 on my PC, running VMWARE PLAYER version 6.0.1 build-1379776.  I can no longer start my session, as I keep getting "VMX file corrupt" error.

What does this error mean.  Can I reinstall VM player software, and will it find my data?

Please confirm.

Thanks

Gary

Serial Communication port cannot be used - which renders Vmware Player useless to me.

I have installed XP professional from original DVD (inside Windows 7 home premium), but although XP seems to "see" the Serial Comm port, the application doesn't.

That application is Picstart16C an old (1994) 16bit software running in DOS mode (console) that tries to communicate with a device in order to program assembly code into a microcontroller's internal EEPROM.

In fact, I've tried two different devices and software and none could communicate via the serial port.

The motherboard is the Gigabyte G41M-Combo.

Any ideas?

Using OVF Tool 3.5.0 to export a VM created witn VMware Player

$

I installed OVF Tool 3.5.0 on Windows 7 64bit PC to export a VM created with VMware Player 6.

I run ovftool.exe and I try to pass the path of the .vmx file but ovftool looks to be unable to open the .vmdk file and fails.

Now, my questions are:

  • Should ovftool be able to export a VM created with VMware Player (the format is the same used by VMware Workstation)?
  • If so, what is the exact syntax to use?
  • Is there anything else to consider?

CentOS KVM, Hyper-V, etc. nested in VMware Player but not Ubuntu based KVM?

I can get CentOS based KVM, Hyper-V, etc. nested in VMware Player but not Ubuntu based KVM?  Yes, I realize this topic may inspire some interesting comments, but for those that want to ask why?  Please, the answer is, because that is the goal.  Ubuntu based KVM nested in VMware Player 6.0.1.  The fact that I can get CentOS based KVM nested and working in VMware Player as well as Hyper-V, I can't see any reason why I can't get Ubuntu KVM working.  In fact, I can install KVM in Ubuntu and start a 64-bit VM, but once started I never seem to get any boot sequence, or at least no video of the boot sequence.  Any crack this nut?  Getting Ubuntu based KVM working in VMware Player?

switch between different VM

Hi everybody,

in the past releases of VMPlayer it was very easy to switch between VM that were running at the same time, because in the toolbar at the top of the screen there were a couple of arrows to move among them.

At this time, those arrows are no longer present.

I can't believe that the only way is to get out to the host and move to the other VM.

Is that the real situation or (as I hope) there is some hot-keys combination to do that?

Regards.

VMtools Installation Issue in safe mode windows server 2003

Hi all,

We are using VMware Player version 6.0.1 running on windows server 2008 R2

We converted one of the system's symantec backup (windows 2003 OS) to vm using VMware vCenter Standalone Converter V 5.5 (selected VMwae player 6.0.x during conversion)

Host OS : Windows server 2008 R2

Guset OS: Windows Server 2003 R2

we are facing the following problems.

1. when we played Virtual machine, it was very slow and we cant install VMtools, so we entered into safe mode(safe mode system works fastly)

2. In Safemode, when we tried to install we got some DLL error (see the attached picture), log files also attached for your reference.

3. By installing VMtools on guset, will it be fast to work?

Following this we tried and didn't worked for us. Anyone have the solution for this problem.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2007225

Step 1:  Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:

a.       Click Start, All Programs, Accessories and then click Run.

b.      In the Open box, type "msiexec /unreg" (without quotes), and then press Enter.

c.       Click Start, All Programs, Accessories and then click Run.

d.      In the Open box, type "msiexec /regserver" (without quotes), and then press Enter.

Step 2: Check to see if the Windows Installer service is running.

a.       Click Start, All Programs, Accessories and then click Run.

b.      Double-click on the service named "Windows Installer".

c.       Check the value in the "Startup type:” field. If it's currently set to "Disabled" change it by selecting "Manual" from the drop-down box. Make sure the service is Started.(Not started for us)

Virtualbox works fine, VMware Player only shows black screen

I have 2 windows 8.1 PCs.

On one of these (an Acer desktop), I have installed VMware Player and successfully create and use windows XP virtual machines.

On the other (an Asus laptop), after I create a virtual machine and start it, all the VMware Player ever shows is a black screen. The little hard drive symbol in the upper right corner which seems to buzz when VMware runs on other installs, appears dead.

I have successfully installed and used VirtualBox, but as a longtime user of VMware, I would rather get it working.

By the way, on this laptop where VMware has not worked - I have tried to create a VM from scratch, I have copied a VM from another computer where VMware was working fine, and I have exported/imported the VM from VirtualBox - all of them are the same when I try and run - black screen that seems inactive - cannot even power on/off because the virtual buttons are unavailable.

For your assistance in this matter, thank you very, very much (Vmware log is attached)

Have a wonderful day!

Difficult, seemingly irreparable tech issue...

Note: Anyone that can help me fix this issue will be deemed a technological genius surpassed in skill only by innately superior AI organisms. (At least in my book.)

Okay, so for the last month I've had this lovely gray window pop up whenever I try to install/uninstall/update my VMware Player.

gray window.png

Truth be told... this window is not lovely. It is the terrible harbinger of wasted time.

As you can probably tell, it has no close button so I have to "End Process" whenever I'm testing it. I've done a lot of google'ing for this certain issue and found an extraordinary lack of information about this particular dilemma.

I'm running aWindows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and have tried all of the solutions that I can find including:

  • Removing the anomaly "L" symbol thing in the "Zones" registry. (It actually didn't exist to begin with so there wasn't actually any removing)
  • Manually uninstalling VMware Player (It doesn't run anymore, but it still appears in add/remove and when attempting to "uninstall" it from there, it still manages to open the window above even though I'm pretty sure everything [mostly everything] relating to VMware Player is gone.)

I've probably done more, but I fail to remember.

Any ideas? I'll be updating this thread regularly and fast until I can find a solution. Hopefully, if successful, this thread can help someone else save the massive amount of time I've wasted looking into the issue.

Okay, thanks guys.

VM Player 3 no Ubuntu 12.04

Bridged Network: TCP/IP Address Lease is Too Short!

$

For software testing purposes, we have a Windows 7 box that serves as a virtual machine host. Up to seven VMs run at the same time on the VMHost machine, each in a separate VMWare Player instance. All connect to the local wireless router using the "Bridged" network option. We access the virtual machines from development machines using Windows Remote Desktop.  Much of the testing involves networking, using both HTTP and a custom TCP/IP-based file-copy protocol.

For reasons we have not been able to determine, the router grants IP address leases of only one hour to each of the virtual machines.  (The host receives normal seven-day leases.)  Though the leases get renewed automatically, lease expiration breaks much of our testing, as all open TCP/IP connections on each virtual machine get canceled when the lease is renewed.  Even internal connections to "localhost" (127.0.0.1 or ::1:) get broken.  Our software does automatically reestablish broken connections, but whatever operation was in progress can fail.  This wreaks havoc with the QA effort on our networking software!

Rarely, a different IP address gets assigned to a VM when the lease expires. This is an added complication, as it can take several minutes for the local DNS caches to be updated.  But this is rare, and we could live with it.

We would prefer to leave current router settings for dynamic address assignment, instead of moving to a fixed-IP mechanism.

Questions:

  1. What causes the leases to be granted with such short (one-hour duration)?  Is this an issue with the router, with VMWare Player networking settings, or with network configuration of the individual virtual machines? (For example, might the router be restricting lease duration because the same MAC address requests multiple IP addresses?)
  2. What can we do to change the lease duration?
  3. Would switching to fixed IP addresses solve the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

There is no option for me to bridge with the Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet network adapter currently installed on my system. Is it because the adapter is not compatible? Or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.
