Can't copy/paste files from Windows Xp guest to Windows 7 host - VM Player 3.1.6

Hey folks,

I am using VMware player 3.1.6 and Windows XP mode installed as a guest and VMware tools 8.4.9.

I can copy both files and text from Windows 7(host) to Windows XP(guest), and I can copy text from Windows XP to Windows 7 but I cannot copy files.

I can copy them but when I click paste in Windows 7 it won't paste them.

I tried searching forums googling the problem etc, but I was unable to find a solution.

Also tried re-installing using newer versions of VMware player etc. but nothing seems to work.

If anyone knows how to fix this issue please let me know.

Very grateful in advance.

Aleksandar

Intermitten network connections -- some worse than others

$

I have an ASUS UX301L laptop running Windows 8.  Had it for about six months.  For the first three months I had no problems connecting to any wireless or wired LAN.  I use it at home, at work, and when I travel, and have had no problems at all.  About three months ago, I installed VMWare Player 6.0, and since then my network connections have become unstable.  At work I used a wired connection, otherwise I don't have access to the printer.  About 3 times a day the icon shows the network is disconnected and I have to shut down and restart everything from the VMWare player to the entire laptap to reset the adapter.  This happens on wifi at home on occasion too, but at least with Wifif I can just "reconnect", not reboot, although occasionally I have had to reset the router.

For the most part I can live with it, but last night I had it at my boyfriend's place and the wifi connection was going up and down like a yoyo.  Same thing happened about a month ago when I worked from his place for the day.  I ended up using my Blackberry as a wireless hotspot as a workaround.  As it wasn't just on occasion, but ever couple of seconds.  I just figured it was his Rogers' router causing problems.  Last night we had a look at the router, and could see an IP address had been assigned to my laptop, but my machine was showing the connection up and down, and other devices (the Internet radio which was playing in the background) was going up and down whenever I put my machine on the network.  As an FYI, prior to installing VMWare player, I used it at his place with wifi over his Rogers' router and had no problems.

The only thing I can think is causing problems is the VMWare Player, since it's the only new thing installed and seems to coincide as to when the network connections became unstable.  And it seems to happen regardless of whether I launch the VMWare Player or not.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem and how I could fix it?

Hello,

I have been using VMware for quite a while but in the latest version when I try to insert the Guest Tools CD it won't replace the existing cd drive with the install. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am using a Windows host and guest.

How to disable yellow "new VmWareTools" notification bar at the bottom for ONE VM?

Whenever a new VmWareTools release is available (for the guestOS) I am notified by a yellow bar at the bottom of the VmWarePlayer guestOS window

How can I disable forever these notifications for ONE VM (not for all/the VmWarePlayer installation)?

Matt

VMPlayer cannot send email and 'site inaccessible from Internet.

Hi.

I’m not far off of being a VM newbie so it might be a simple answer…

I’m running Debian as the guest under Windows 7.  Purpose of the VM is to host a dev/test environment of a Wordpress based website.

Linux VM works really well (can download Wordpress plugins etc. etc.) however

1) I can’t e-mail from it (I can from the live site)

2) One of the Wordpress plugins (Jetpack) won’t register as it says ‘your website needs to be publicly accessible to use Jetpack: site_inaccessible   Error Details: The Jetpack server was unable to communicate with your site [HTTP 404].’

This was with the VM set to the ‘NAT’ network setting.  Changing it to ‘bridged’ resulted in no improvement and no browser access to the internet (although I can ping bbc.co.uk & google.com).

VMPlayer is   version 6.0.2 build-1744117

Host is:  Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1

ip setups from Windows and Linux pasted below.

Any ideas?

Cheers/

Nigel.

I am trying to set up VMPlayer on my new windows 8.1 computer. The beginning of the install runs fine including the download from VM and entering the product code. However, when it is time for the installation proper to start the computer says it can't read the CD. They are actually DVDs and I have both the original Windows XP Pro DVD and another that has been updated to SP3.  I have tried both with no luck.

Guest display split into identical panes

I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS linux running in a VMWare Player 6 VM, in a Win7 host.

This install has been stable for >2yrs, but after some Ubuntu updates today, my screen now boots into 3 repeated and truncated panes.  See bottom of msg for how the display shows.

I found this VMWare KB article that describes the issue, but I'm unsure this applies to Player6:

VMware KB: Linux Guest Display Splits into Multiple Panes with Identical Content

I had installed VMWare Tools using the Player controls, but running the prescribed command in Ubuntu terminal:

sudo vmware-config-tools.pl --overwritesvga

....doesn't do anything, just gets me to the man pages for this config package.

Help appreciated!  I'm unable to use this VM as is.

When I go to create a new virtual machine, i click browse for the "Installer disc image file (iso):", but when I select the folder for the OS i want to install, the folder is empty. VMware doesn't acknowledge the file. The files are very much there on my PC. They are .vmdk files. But they do not appear in the VM player when I attempt to create a new vm. Any ideas? I've had this same OS working on VMware before, but had to reinstall it.(the OS is Kali LInux)

How to Fix - software update can't connect

$

Hello,

I downloaded VMware Player 5.0.2 for Windows x64 and installed it on Windows 7.

The automatic software update download appears to hang.

Clicking "Details" indicates it cannot connect to the update server "https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds " which is a non-standard URL.

I used a browser to go to https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds but all of the links lead to dead-ends.

However if you use the standard URL https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/ (with a "terminating" slash delimeter) the same directory listing appears, with working links.

There is at least one thread explaining how to manually extract and use the .iso files to install the virtual machine tools. It would be better if VMware Player handled this for the end user as designed.

The problem is in libcds.dll and can be corrected with a Hex Editor in Windows.

Example:

Download a Hex Editor like xvi32 (Google: http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm#download ) extract and run.

Find the libcds.dll file ( "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\libcds.dll" ) and make a backup copy in case this fails. Drag and drop the original libcds.dll file on the xvi32 application window.

Xvi32 has a text search feature called "Search" (After clicking on search, click on "Find - Text string") then type [ softwareupdate ] click on [OK]

To the right of the main display, in the white grid, will be the ASCII representation of the URL https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds

Click on the box, in the white ASCII grid area, after the last letter in the URL 'http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds' and type ' / ' ( forward slash - next to your right shift key, under ? ). Save the file.

Then restart the VMware Player.

Manually trigger a software update download ->

[Player] -> File -> Player Preferences -> Software Updates -> [Download All Components Now]

All of the virtual machine tools will begin to download and finish.

The downloaded packages will automatically extract and install the *.iso files where they belong.

The virtual machine tools menu option will now work from VMware Player for all virtual machines->

[Player] -> Manage -> VMware Tools Installation

If problems arise, you can stop VMware Player, and restore the libcds.dll file saved before the edit.

Running two clones simultaneously = no access to host network shares on 2nd insance

$

Dear All,

I succesfully have cloned one instance of VmWare player by making a copy of its folder, and renamed the machine.

Then I chose to have copied - as opposed to moved - the virtual machine, and everything goes well.

Except for one thing: Nomatter in which order I´ll run the two machines, the 2nd one fails to see my network shares on the host machine. It can see the host machine name on the network, but will have no access to the shares. So obviously, the two clones share something which identifies them to the host, which is unique and only allowed by one client at a time.

So I checked the Mac address, but this one is unique on the two machines. However, the "transport name" is the same. Will I need to change the transport name in the registry on one of the two machines to solve my problem?

One more thing - not sure if I´ll need to open a separate thread for this: My Logitech Fusion webcam is only showing as an exclamation mark under unknown devices. Any fix for this?

Thanks in advance!

Best Regards

Unity Mode - Key Remains Pressed

Hello All,

VMWare Player Version: 6.0.2 build-1744117

Host OS: OpenSuSE 11.4

Guest OS: Windows XP

*Issue ONLY happens in Unity Mode...

I've noticed this issue more times now then I care to mention. Today for the most part while I was using Excel, while in Unity mode. But that is just because Excel was what I was using today for most of the day.

What happens is, when I'm typing in a cell and entering a formula for example, and as I'm typing a popup comes up (*from Excel ) with something like a suggestion or a "hint-box" kind of thing related to the formula I'm typing, whatever key was pressed remains pressed unit I hit another key or click away with the mouse, or anything similar...

For example, I was typing "vlookup(B1,B1:B100,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"

So, as I hit the comma at that point in the formula, I simply paused typing for a moment then the next thing I knew the formula was filled with commas, since once I hit the comma a suggestion popup box thing came up suggesting what comes next in the formula. And it seems like whenever this happens it continues entering whatever the last key typed was... Does that make sense??

One other example, this one is with Outlook 2010. Let's say I'm writing a script on my Host OS's Gedit program (simple text editor, like Wordpad). And as I'm typing I get the popup box in the bottom right of the screen above my Host's Taskbar, saying I have a new email message in my inbox in Outlook. And if I was typing when that box popped up, whatever the last key I typed was gets repeated continuously until I hit another key.

Hopefully that makes sense...?

Basically, it seems like whenever I'm doing any kind of typing in any program (Guest OR Host programs), if a window pops-up from the Guest OS, whatever key I hit last when the popup appears, it repeats that character/symbol until I hit another key.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, please feel free!

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

Windows XP guest in Windows 8.1 host

I am new to VMware and this is the first time I have tried using a virtual machine.

I have an old laptop running XP Pro that I can use with my (equally old) Artec ViewStation AS6E flatbed scanner. This I use in association with Paint Shop Pro 7 to  scan in images. Because the laptop is becoming rather decrepit and because W 8.1 (which I have on my desktop) does not support such an old scanner, I had the idea of running XP in VMware Player on my desktop. The first time I installed XP, everything went fine and I was able to scan and save images that I could later print using W8.1. Unfortunately, for other reasons, I had to uninstall and reinstall VMware player and although I have XP and PSP7 up and running, the scanner will not work. I get a 4-part error message when I try to acquire an image:

1. Please check whether scanner connects to the computer (it does via a parallel port that I added);

2. Make sure that the scanner connects to the power and that the LED is on (!!!);

3. Please set the BIOS Parallel Mode to EPP Mode or Normal Mode (I recall changing the BIOS on the laptop a few years ago but I have no idea what to do now if only because presumably that would mean changing the BIOS of my desktop and it seems to very difficult to access the BIOS with W8.1 installed);

4. Please remove the printer port pass-through device (I have no idea what this means).

This is more of a learning exercise than anything vital. I think that it really is time that I bought a new, W8.1 printer/scanner but, as a Scot, it pains me to dispose of something that is in perfect working order.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

VmWare tools certificate error in win 7

Hello,

I'm using VmWare Player 6.0.2 build-1744117 on Linux Debian. I installed win 7 on it and when I tried to install VmWare Tools I get this error: "A certificate error occurred for the update server. Check your Internet settings or contact your system administrator".  But I don't think it's my internet settings because the internet is working in the virtual machine(win 7) and also on my host OS. I also don't use proxy.

How can I fix this problem? I really want to install VmWare Tools. Please help me to fix it.

I'm attaching screenshots with the error and with my internet settings.

Copy and Paste issue - specific and wierd case

I'm having a weird issue with Copy and Paste on both the VMplayer and Workstation.  I have spent many hours trying to diagnose this and have finally thrown my hands up in frustration.

First, my environment is:

  • Host: Ubuntu Linux version 14.04
  • Vmware Workstation 10.0.2 build-1744117
  • VMware Player 6.0.2 build-1744117
  • VM's running Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux 14.04
  • Browser on Host: Google Chrome Version 35.0.1916.153

The issue is that I cannot copy and paste text between the Host browser (Google Chrome) and any application on any Guest VM.

Here is what I can do:

  • I am able to Copy and Paste files between the Host and Guest VM's.
  • I am able to Copy and Paste text between other applications on the Host and applications running on the VM's.
  • I am able to Copy and Paste text between FireFox, running on the Host and applications running on the VM's.
  • I can use the Google Chrome browser, running in the VM's, to Copy and Paste text to applications within the same VM's.
  • I can use the Google Chrome browser within the VM to transfer data to another application running on a different VM.
  • I can transfer text from Google Chrome running on a VM to a text input box on the Host Google Chrome.

The common denominator seems to be Google Chrome on the Host.

Is this an issue with VMware or Google Chrome or Ubuntu Linux or a combination of the three?  Has anyone else had this issue?  The only work-around I have found to this is to copy the desired text on the Chrome browser of the Host to a text editor on the Host and then copy from the text editor to the desired VM application, but this is cumbersome.  Any suggestions would be welcome.

Problem installing / uninstalling

Hi,

Unusual circumstance I'm sure.

I had Vmware Player installed on my H:\ drive a couple weeks ago.  Yesterday morning my H drive died on me.

I tried to reinstall VMware player on the new drive that I put in, however it only gives me the options to uninstall or repair.  I've tried both options but it simply gets to a point and then tells me that the H:\ drive is not available (well, yeah that's the HDD that died on me).

I tried to uninstall Vmware player using Windows 7, programs and features options but it just brings up a Vmware player installer/uninstaller that eventually tells me the same thing, that the H:\ drive is inaccessible.

How do I go about reinstalling Vmware player when it thinks it's still installed on my computer but the drive that it was originally installed on is no longer in the system?

Thanks

VMware Player vs. Workstation

I've puzzled about the VMware website trying to locate a product matrix explaining why I should by vmplayer plus or vm workstation.  I downloaded and played with Workstation - feels solid.  Before I spend an extra $150, can someone tell me the top differences between player and workstation?  A direct link would be fine as well.

Follow up questions - If I have VMs already created with Workstation, will vmplayer launch them?

Does vmplayer support import of older Windows Xp virtual machines (supported by Windows 7 Pro)?

Thanks, and I appreciate any answers.
