Hello Community,

first some words to my environment:

Host:            Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64 Bit

VM Player:    7.0.0 build-2305329

Guest:          Windows Server 2012 R2

I updated last week the VM Player from 6.0.3 to current, after booting the guest I allways get the "hint" update VMTools.

No my problem:

If I click update nothing happens, there wont be "inserted" the VMTools DVD into virtual DVD drive. Also when I try to "insert" via menu nothing happens.

Could somebody help me?

Best Regards

Martin

Updated Ubuntu won't let me complete login process

Greetings, all!

I just did software updates on my Ubuntu 14.04 vm and now I can't get past the login screen.  After reboot, I enter username and password but it won't enter the desktop.  When I attempt to update the VMware tools, it won't connect to the VMware server.  It just hangs up.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I did just add a monitor yesterday, but I did that before I ran the software updates.

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers!

All VMs Start with Black Screen

Recently moved all my VMs from Host Win7-64bit to Win8-64bit.

Fresh install of Player v 5.0.2 build-1031769

Computer is Acer Aspire M Intel i5 @ 1.8Ghz

Graphics is Intel HD 4000

When any of the various VMs are started from the Powered Off state, the player window will open and a big black screen will appear where the guest display should be shown. The guest OS does indeed boot, right up to the login screen although with no display visible. If I try to click on the close button in the upper right corner, I get a dialog box that says "The Virtual Machine is Busy". My only option is to end the vmplayer.exe task using task manager. Once I do that, the VM shows state as Powered On in the Library. If I Play it the 2nd time, the VM will resume operating correctly with the proper display at the immediate point where I expected it to be when I ended the vmplayer.exe task earlier.

Presence or absence of Tools in Guest does not affect the problem.

All 3 of my VMs have the exact same behavior. Guest operating Systems are: WinXP-SP3-32bit, Win7-64bit built from the VMware Converter, and Server 2008 from the MS eval ISO.

Any ideas? Once the play/end task/play sequence is performed the VM works correctly. Until it is shutdown or hibernated. A VM restart does not exhibit this symptom. The problem is reproducible with all VMs every time.

Provided vmx for the XP VM and a few logs.

Thanks in advance. I'm so close to having this work it's even more frustrating than if it didn't work at all.

Need to reset NAT x.x.x.N number back to 128

Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit with VMware Player 7.0.0 build-2305329.

I'm creating a lot of virtual machines all using NAT, and then having to delete them and start over (I'm a tester and after something goes wrong, I get a new image and need to start fresh again). When I created the first one, the NAT address was 192.a.b.128, then the 4th number started incrementing by 1. I know I have until 255, but what happens when it reaches that value? The earlier addresses aren't in use anymore, I've deleted those VM files. Is there a way I can reset that 4th number back to 128? I know Player 7 doesn't include the VM net config tool anymore, was that the only tool that could do what I'm asking?

Use of system resources - VM Player

$

I am migrating from Linux Mint 16 with Win7 running on virtualbox. I want to run Linux Mint 17.1 and read that VM Player can run Windows 10 for the ever smaller percentage of time I might need Windows.

I am concerned about having adequate system resources for video editing in Linux and the drain on resources that having VM will have on my system.

Does VM Player use allocated resources (RAM & Core) when not using the guest OS? Is 2gb RAM adequate to run Win 10?

System:

Lenovo Z50

4th Generation Intel Core i7-4510U 17 quad core

8gb RAM

SATA HD

The alternative is doing a dual boot which is OK, just not as efficient.

Thanks,

VMware Player 7 PRO installation problem

I have just attempted to load Player 7 PRO and Windows XP SP2 on my new Win 8.1 64 bit machine (Dell Inspiron 23 All-in-one) as I need to be able to run some XP programs. It all seemed to go well but I don't think Vmware tools loaded as I don't see them. When I try to open the Win XP Virtual Machine by clicking on Windows XP and then Play Virtual Machine I get a command line screen as in the attached screen shots with the message "NTLDR is missing  Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". When I do this from the Player dropdown menu it shows the Vmware logo and then straight back to the error message again.

Would very much appreciate some advice.

Player, Lubuntu , Wine and a black screen - help?

Hi, tried to install Wine. Used the Lubuntu Software center, added to cart and then left it to install. Came back 30-minutes later and a black screen.

I am using it within VMWare Player and I can shut it down via Player and I see the Lubuntu sign-off screen.

I can restart with Player it and see the Sign-on screen, but then a few seconds later it goes black with no mouse cursor.

Any way to roll back to before the Wine attempt?

OR

Any way to get beneath the black screen and kill off whatever is causing it?

My last backup was 2/3/15 so hoping I can recover what I had just before Wine, but can go to 2/3 if I must.

Thought I'd ask here first.

VMware Player 7 - Are there any Issues with AD GPO policy on VM?

Hi..

Here's the scenario -

VM Player 7 host workstation will be part of the client domain. The VM on the host will be part of the private domain. Essentially, Host and VM are on separate domains.

Are there any Domain level or local GPOs applied to the host system affect the VM?

thanks

Is there a way to import ova file (created with vagrant/virtualbox) from command-line? For example VMware VIX API, etc. I read VIX API docs but cannot find related API. All the function requires *.vmx file which is not available inside ova file (tar).

Connect to a VM when not on a Network

I have VMPlayer V6 running on a Windows 8.1 tablet.   I have a VM of Windows Server 2012 with SQL Server installed on it.   I have SQL Management Studio installed in the Host OS and I want to connect to the SQL Server running in the Guest.

I have networking for the VM configured to Bridged to connect to the LAN (assuming the Host is one one).   When I'm at home on my Home LAN the VM is assigned an IP from the LAN and it works fine.  But when I'm away from home and there is no LAN for the tablet to connect to, the Guest does not get an IP, and the Host SQL Management Studio cannot connect to the SQL Instance on the host.  I have tried using the Host-only option and static IPs without success.

Is there a way for applications running in the Host to connect to services running in the Guest when there is no external LAN to provide network settings?

Thanks.

Error while opening the virtual machine: Internal error. / Error while opening the virtual machine: The virtual machine cannot be found.

Hi,

I am having serious trouble opening my virtual machine. I'm running Win7, and have a virtual machine with Debian installed. I have had some troubles before, then solved by adding the line diskLib.sparseMaxFileSizeCheck= "FALSE" to the vmx-file.

I have attached two vmx-files. When I try to open "Debian Lenny.vmx" i get error "Error while opening the virtual machine: Internal error." When I try to open "Debian Lenny - backup.vmx" I get "Error while opening the virtual machine: The virtual machine cannot be found.". They reffer to the same vmdk file (Debian Lenny.vmdk", which is, by the way, HUGE (14 534 528 kB !!!).

I have searched google and this forum for answers, tried a couple of things, but still don't get it to work. Does anyone of you have a clue what could possibly be wrong?

I also attached the vmxf-files. In the directory there are some vmsd-files aswell, but the appears to be empty?! The vmware log files don't get changed when I try to open the VM, so I didn't attach them.

Please let me know if you need any more info!

VMware Player cannot start a suspended VM from an SMB shared drive, says “Failed to lock the file”

$

I have a VMware Player VM running on a Windows 8 host, with the image files located in a remote shared folder that resides on a Linux server. On the server side I have set up my file access permissions to the user ID used to open the shared folder, and I ran chmod -R 0777 * on the directory where the VMs are located.

Whenever I try to start a suspended VM, I get an error message that says:

Could not get snapshot information: Failed to lock the file

Module Snapshot power on failed

Failed to start the virtual machine

There are no stale .lck files on my VM's working directory, and I have made sure multiple times that the user ID I use to access the SMB share can create and remove files properly. I tried granting total access to all user IDs on the shared folder's properties, Security tab, and it didn't work.

I would appreciate any assistance I could get in that matter.

I can't get VMWare Player v11 to recognise me pressing F11 in the VM console

I am installing ESXi within VMware Player but need the VM to accept F11 for the installation to complete.  I've tried everything I can think of.  Are there specific ways to pass function keys to VMs in VMware Player?

I'm using the current version of VMware Player that I downloaded yesterday.  Running Windows7 Professional.

I tried with both default option under "Enhanced virtual Keyboard" set to Off and then I changed it to "required" (with reboot of hosting server) but that made no difference.

cheers
