Need to use a specified address range in Player 7

$
0
0

I use Player7 to VPN into a network.  It mostly works well, but some functionality (e.g., auto-launching java applets) requires "split tunneling" which is only possible on this network if my Player7's IP addresses are in the range of 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.9.0/24.  The default network segment for my VMnet8 is 192.168.19.0/24.  The host OS is Win10pro.  The guest OS is Win7 Ultimate.

  • I have tried specifying static addressing on VMnet8 adapter in the host OS, but it didn't change the default network segment.
  • I also tried specifying static addressing on the Local Area Connection in the guest OS, but this didn't work either . . . though I don't remember exactly how it didn't work at this point.
  • Additionally, I tried setting the adapter to bridge mode (Player > Manage > Virtual Machine Settings > Hardware > Network Adapter), but this resulted in my not being able to connect to my local network (disconnected), let alone VPN into the remote network.
    • It has an option to Configure Adapters, but that option only displays a selection box with nothing to select which does not seem useful.
  • I even tried editing C:\ProgramData\VMware\vmnetnat.conf, vmnetdhcp.conf& vmnetdhcp.leases by replacing 192.168.19.xxx with 192.168.3.xxx, but that didn't change the default network segment either.
  • I tried so many things that Player7 stopped connecting to the network and and had to uninstall and reinstall it to get it working again.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I use Workstation 11 on Fedora 22. The latest kernel update (4.2.3-200) requires a rebuild that fails (on vmnet if I remember correctly). No particular errors are shown.

For now, I dropped back to 4.1.10-200.fc22.x86_64, which works just fine.

networking on Ubuntu VM stopped functioning after latest VMWare tools upgrade

when configuring the latest VMWare tools, I receive the following error:

"The vmxnet driver is no longer supported on kernels 3.3 and greater. Please  upgrade to a newer virtual NIC. (e.g., vmxnet3 or e1000e)"

I have followed instructions on a few different posts to try to fix this, and none have worked.

I have tried running the vmware tools configuration script with --clobber-kernel-modules=vmxnet - that didn't help.

I tried changing ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet" to "vmxnet3" in the .vmx file - that didn't help either.

Running Ubuntu 14.04 on VMWare Player 6.0.6 build-2700073 on Windows 7. The VM image in question is Ubuntu 14.04 on Linux kernel 1.13.0-43.

This is for bridged mode (which I need) - running in NAT mode works fine.

Xubuntu 15.10 Host - Can't Start VMWare WorkStation Player 12?

Hi,

I did a clean install of Xubuntu 15.10 64Bit Linux and fully updated it.

I then installed VMWare WorkStation Player 12 for Linux.

When I try to run VMWare WorkStation Player 12 on new Xubuntu 15.10 nothing happens?

When I run it in a terminal, I get no error messages and it won't open?

The installation appears to finish correctly, but I never get to the screen to enter email address?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

CentOS 7 Network problem between Host and Guest Only.

$

I'm experiencing slow network connectivity between my CentOS 7 host and its vmware workstation player 12 guests, slowness in both directions.  I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this and figured out what to do.

Symptoms:

1) ssh in either direction, I intermittently observe pauses of 1 to many seconds between keystrokes.

2) munin has a hard time collecting data between the guest and the host - leaving gaps in graphs.

What works perfectly:

Host to the rest of the world.  Guests to the rest of the world.  World to the host.  World to the guests.  Guests to Guests all work as expected.

I've verified the issue on two machines, both running the latest CentOS 7.1 distribution.  System configurations:

Machine 1: (At Work)

Dell Workstation - Sandy Bridge 6 core, 96 GB of ram.

Tested Host CentOS 7.1 to windows 7 guest (with cygwin) via ssh.

Player 7.1.2

Machine 2: (At Home)

Asus MB with AMD A5700, 4 core, 32 gb of ram.

Tested Host CentOS 7.1 to Centos 6.7 guest and Centos 7.1 Guest.

Workstation Player 12

Tested all three network configurations (bridged, nat, host only) with the same result.

With Machine 2, had previously windows 8.1 with Workstation Player 12.  All networking worked as expected.

I've seen several articles on the web concerning adjusting TCP segmentation offload and other nic features.  The ones I read really didn't match my issue, those described no connectivity between host and guests, but I tried the adjustments anyway, but they didn't help.

Thanks,

John

"The MSI 'C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware_1372412506\vmwareplayer_x64.msi' failed." - Workaround

Hi folks

I have been strugling to install VMWare Player for a while now, and finally found a workaround that did the trick for me. As I haven't seen this solution online, I thought I'd post it here to help others.

20130628_VMWare_error_v2.png

Facts

VMWare Player version(s): VMware-player-5.0.1-894247.exe and VMware-player-5.0.2-1031769.exe

Windows version: Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit SP1

Encryption: Yes, Bitdefender active.

What didn't work

I tested various suggestions listed here and in the KB:

  1. Redownload, control checksum, all was well.
  2. "Run as administrator", no change.
  3. Clear TEMP folder, no change.
  4. Turn off UAC settings, no change.

In summary I tested many of the solutions listed in these places with no luck:

VMware KB: Troubleshooting an MSI error during a VMware product or Tools installation

You receive an "error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation" error message when you try to instal…

Installation VMwareplayer impossible

VMWare Player fails to install on Win7 x64 Home Premium

What did work

I noticed that the VMWare files were extracted to a TEMP folder before installation failed, but were removed when it failed (standard rollback procedure I guess). Did as follows:

  • Started the installation, made choices like folder etc., but did not proceed when I got to the "Continue" button that will start the installation (and generate the error)
  • Navigated to the "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp" folder, and copied the temp folder that was now present there (it is removed once you get the error message) to another folder (it is called
"vmware_XXXXXXXXXX", where the XXXXXXXXXX is a unique number each time it seems).
  • Clicked "Continue" and let the installation fail.
  • Went to the folder I had copied ("vmware_1372416285" in my case).
  • Double clicked "vmwareplayer_x64.msi", and it installed fine!

How to (forever) disable warning "The virtual printing feature is globally disabled on this system,..."?

$

When I start one of my Win7 64bit VMs (on Win 7 64bit host) a VmWare Player warning is displayed during BIOS booting:

"The virtual printing feature is globally disabled on this system, and will not be enabled ..."

How can I avoid this warning?

I never need printing from guestOS.

So if possible I would like to change something in VM guest only.

Is there a corresponding *.vmx setting which help me to avoid this warning?

Thank you

After receiving the above message with the disks I downloaded an ISO image file of Windows 98 and still get the same message when trying to create a virtual machine.  I have searched the forums and found someone had the same message trying to install Windows 98 on an earlier version of workstation.  But the reply they received was to use the original floopy disks but as I have the cds I'm stuck as to why I'm having this problem. I have workstation installed on my SSD and hoped to install virtual machines  on HDD storage.  But have tried to install on SSD and still get the same message.  As this is server message should I be receiving it at all?  Can someone please assist?

How to setup networking on a VM Player 7 so guest nodes have their own IP and enable direct log in directly?

$

*Qualifying statement: I am green/newbie trying VM, please be gentle*

1) I have a robust machine 64 bit CPU and 64 bit WIN 7 Pro, 48 GB RAM assigned a static IP address that I could access and use.  However, I could not join it to my domain, but it is okay for now.

2) I have guest OS of WIN 7 pro and RHEL 6.7, they have default install using NAT and use DHCP which gives me network connection as work, if i assign static then becomes public and w/o internet access.

3) Currently with static IP or DHCP i could not directly RDP into the guest node

- Firewalls off between my laptop and virtual host and virtual guests

- Added IP of v-guests in my laptop's hosts file, hosts (in case of RHEL in /etc/hosts)

- V-host is set with static and i could ping it and other machines as well as tracert but not v-guests

What I am trying to do is to have each guest nodes have their own IP, that user could use to directly login to that node without having to interact with virtual host.  I am a novice in networking and will read material pointed to but requesting a 'dummies' level in directions or questions.

I just discovered NAT, LAN segment, but as I said being newbie sucks and it went over my head.  I discovered this community too.  Respectfully requesting guidance, I will read up as well.

Currently i have to give admin access to user on virtual host machine and tell them to start a guest node because of this lack of setup/knowledge.

I thank you for your time in advance.

Win8.1 Guest-Minimize,Maximize,Close Window Icons Corrupted?

Hi,

I am running current VMWare Player for Linux version 7.1.2

with an Xubuntu 14.10 64Bit host and proprietary Intel display driver installed

Everything works great except that application windows have corrupted minimize, maximize, and close buttons?

The minimize, maximize, and close buttons still work, but it's hard to see them when they are corrupted.

Is it possible to connect two VMs via USB?

$

Hi,

I have two VMs running in VMware Player 6.0.7 (one running Android and another running Ubuntu Linux), and I would like to know if it is possible to connect them together via a virtual USB connection.  I see that it is possible to connect two VMs with a virtual serial connection (Using Serial Ports), but I have not figured out a way to do the same thing using USB.  The reason I'd like to do this is so I can do Android adb debugging in a completely-virtualized environment, without having to run adb over IP.

Has anyone done something like this in VMware Player or Workstation?

many thanks,

WMWare Player - VMWware Tools 9.9.3+ hangs on installation of Thin Print drivers (9.9.2 worked fine)

$

I made the mistake of accepting the upgrade to VMWare Tools 9.9.3 build 2759765 and no matter what I do it will not complete an installation that includes the Thin Print drivers. The previous version worked fine, but now that I have downloaded 9.9.3 I can't revert back to an earlier version. I'd like to reinstall VMware Tools 9.9.2 build 2496486 but it doesn't appear to be available anywhere to download anymore. Am I missing something? Can anyone help me obtain this older version?

I am experiencing this problem on every version of VMWare PlayerI've tried (including VMWare Workstation Player 12 and VMWare Player 7.1.2). My Host operating System is Windows 7 Pro SP1 (x64), and my guest operating System is the same. The guest operating system is a clean install and no 3rd party software or utilities have been installed (including all anti-virus software). There is also plenty of storage space available on the guest C: drive so storage space is not an issue.

If I attempt to install VMWare Tools 9.9.3 with the Thin Print driver, it hangs indefinitely with no error message. I've let it go as long as a 72 hrs and it never gets around to completion, so it's not a matter of time or waiting for it to complete.

If I disable the Thin Print drivers it installs VMWare Tools within just a few minutes, but I need the ability to print via the Thin Print Drivers.

I have explored the following VMWare link: Index of /45848/tools  There are quite a few versions of VMWare Tools located there, but nothing above version 9.4.15, or below 10.0.0.

Is there any way to locate VMWare Tools version 9.9.2 for Windows (x64) somewhere? or does anyone know how to troubleshoot a hung VMWare Tools Installation? or to manually install compatible Thin Print Drivers?

Any advice or assistance would be appreciated (except for advice to run without the Thin Print drivers, or wait longer for installation to complete)

ps: I have also tried installing higher versions of VMWare Tools for Windows (VSphere & ESX) such as 9.10.1 and 10.0.0, but they also hang on installation of the Thin Print Driver. I'm also confused as to why if these versions are compatible with WMware Workstation 12 Player, they aren't automatically downloaded by it. It seems to want to automatically download & install VMWare Tools version 9.9.3 for some reason. It's not clear to me why there are so very many versions of WMware Tools available for VSphere & ESX, but only one version for Player.

Seeking patch for VMware Workstation 10 on Ubuntu 15.10; kernel 4.2

$

Similar to other users, I am seeking a patch for the kernel modules for VMware Workstation 10 (10.0.6, specifically).

Note, I tried to apply the patch for VMware 11, available from this discussion: Re: Vmware Workstation 11: Кernel modules for linux 4.2-rc5+

However, unsurprisingly, I get a core dump when I try to run VMware 10 with the following message (or something similar):

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module": libcanberra-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

*** Error in `/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware': free(): invalid pointer: 0x000055f1009e4350 ***

To apply the patch, what I did was extract the tarbal that was attached to that discussion, and replace the existing /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source with the copy in the tarbal (making a backup of the original /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source directory).

Is there a patch available for VMware Workstation 10? I know that VMware WS 12 is supposed to work under Ubuntu 15.10 and kernel-4.2, but it is frustrating to have to upgrade our VMware licenses every couple of years when Ubuntu releases an upgrade.

Upgraded to 12 - Ubuntu VM network issues now...pretty weird actually...

So I upgraded recently to see if there are any improvements running VMWare in Windows 10.  But now I'm facing a pretty weird issue with network connections...

At home I launch my VM on either my desktop or laptop and it will connect to the internet.  I switch between the two machines via a usb SSD.

But if I'm connecting to the internet elsewhere, I will not get a connection.  It has happened at several locations already - airport, hotel and at school.  Bottom line is it connects at home and it doesn't when I leave the house.  Laptop does work with whatever wifi connection I'm getting.  It's just the VM that doesn't.  This started to happen after upgrading to the latest version of the player.   Anyone know what may be causing this to happen?

Player 12.0.1 on Ubuntu 15.10 doesn't start

I just upgraded vmware player  to the version 12.0.1. When I try to start vmware it simply does nothing. No messages, no errors, no flashes, no nothing.

I have added error from log file /tmp/vmware-user# tail vmware-apploader-9383.log
