No support for touchpad scrolling in Linux Host

$

There are posts going back over 5 years and this still isn't implemented.

I have a linux host (Dell XPS 13 with Synaptics touchpad on Fedora 22), and a Windows 10 guest.

In Windows 10, the mouse shows as a basic mouse, making scrolling unusable and clunky with 3 line scrolling. For a software developer who scrolls code all day, its basically a total showstopper.

I have many employees and over 20+ machines we would move over to VMWare if it had this support. However it looks like its been requested for over 5 years and nobody is doing anything about it.

Any solution?

W7 host with W10 Guest - HANG

I have seen several hangs in both my guest and host.  I initially thought it was VMware Tools related but have now concluded it is not - at least I am running the latest Tools (10.0.5, build 3228253).

My latest hang:  With W10 x64 (build 1511) running on VM playing music using Firefox, I opened a folder on my host, right clicked a command (.cmd) file and clicked "Run as administrator".  The host hung with "Windows Explorer is not responding".  Replying "Close application" did nothing.  I could not open the Task Manager on the host even using Ctrl-Alt-Del.  Knowing this had been VM associated before, I selected the guest and used W10 Start to do a Shut Down.  The guest then hung and trying to use the VM menu to Shut down or power off the guest had no effect.  Ultimately I had to manually reset my host.  I hope someone can help.  Thanks and enjoy, John.

Unable to start VM using the Workstation in Windows 10

Hello  happy people,

I have installed Windows 10 the other day and installed the VMware Workstation Player downloaded from: https://my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation_player/12_0

But I cannot open/start my virtual machines, that use to work just fine on Windows 8.1 that I use before. I have this message in the log file (attached):

2016-02-01T10:59:01.078+01:00| vthread-4| I120: FILE: FileCreateDirectoryRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (C:\ProgramData\VMware): Cannot create a file when that file already exists (183)

2016-02-01T10:59:01.078+01:00| vthread-4| I120: FILE: FileCreateDirectoryRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation): Cannot create a file when that file already exists (183)

I also try to install VMware Workstation 11 but without any success, I got the same message in the log file.

Can somebody please help me out here?

How to download VmWareTools for (win, linux, solaris) hostOS (!) without starting guest VM?

$

Whenever a new VmWare Tools version is released then it should be installed in

- guestOS

- hostOS

Ok, guestOS is clear.

But what about the hostOS Is there a way to install it in hostOS WITHOUT having to start/boot a VM?

Currently the only way I found so far to install it in hostOS is to start a VM. Then VmWare Player detects that a new version is available for HostOS and show a prompt dialog.

I had to click on "Download and install" button.

Is this "download and install" possible WITHOUT having to start a VM?

Furthermore the "Download and install" should be possible for a different guestOSs: Linux, Windows, Solaris.

How can I achieve this?

Thank you

Matt

VMDK file corrupted

I have corrupted vmdk files and have tried a few items to recover the data and so far have not had much luck.

I have downloaded the Virtual Disk Development Kit and ran the vmware-vdiskmanager.exe on main vmdk file.  All I get is that the file is corrupted and cannot be repaired.  I tried installing the trial of the Workstation Pro...gladly pay for it if it fixed my disk...and that did not help much.

I then attempted to use Stellar Phoenix Virtual Machine Data Recovery ...which actually was able to see the files..most of them at least...but to recover them I need to pay $300.  I would rather pay money for Workstation Pro so I have something to use later than $300 for recovery that I will hopefully only need this one time.  So...Are there any additional options?  IS there a data recovery built into Workstation Pro somehow like what Stellar is using?

Thanks!

I installed VMware Workstation Player on a Windows 10 x64 System. Everything was working fine.

I was able to run a lot of virtual machines.... since today.

Since today I get the following error on every machine I want to start:

I made a clean uninstall of VMware Workstation Player, I installed it new, but the error still occurs.

I created a new (blank) virtual machine. Same error-

I didn't changed anything on my system (now Windowsupdates, no Driverupdates) since the last time I was able to run virtual machines

Can anybody help please???

Of course I can provide a log file.

Thanks a lot

DOS/Windows guest operating systems and USB floppy

If I were to use a USB floppy drive, is there any additional procedure required to configure MS/PC-DOS or Windows 3.1/95/98/ME to recognize it as Drive A?

Or is it as simple as configuring the guest OS to recognize a USB device (most likely, set to version 1.1) and then plugging in the floppy, and the guest OS will automatically recognize it as a floppy, with the possible exception that it must be set as drive A?

i cannot export to .ovf file...i keep getting the attached error

How to enforce the licensing when one either clones or moves an original VM ?

$

Good morning,

We develop and sell software. Currently it can't run on virtual machines but many customers asked for that feature.

We are studying how we can enforce the licensing in VM. Of course we want to avoid the case where a customer buys one license,

install our software on a VM then either moves or clones it many times. Currently we don't see any approach to distinguish between the original VM

and the VM moved on another computer. Can you suggest an approach?

I thought the UUID was a solution but I read that it is possible to keep the same UUID when one either moves or copies the original VM. Is it true? Can you explain us in details how the UUID is generated? I already read an incomplete explanation in the KB but that is not enough to understand and reassure us.

What are the UUID.BIOS and the UUID.LOCATION?

   Thank you,

Workstation 11.0 "Where is my wifi adapter" just installed Windows 7 64 bit?

I have 3 VM's all running old O/S XP and NT98 LOL for old software that I use for various jobs at sites. They both have a "local" and "wireless" connection I can choose under network adapters. I just made a new VM using Windows 7 64 bit PRO and there is no "Wifi adapter", how can I add one?

I've read where VMware only shows a wired connection, but that is not true because I have both on XP and 98 to enable and disable. I want to do the same with Windows 7 what am I missing?

Click with touch screen on a Windows 8 host doesn't work

Hi,

I run a windows 7 on VMWare Workstation 12 Player hosted on a windows 8.1 computer with a touch screen.

> The touch inputs are received by the WM but the tap event doens't work well :

- It seems that the tap event occurs on the previous cursor position, but not on the current cursor position. For instance if I try to type on a displayed keyboard, I need to tap 2 times to get the key pressed.

- If I host my VM on a Windows 7 everything works perfect ! So the problem just occurs on Windows 8...

I'd be glad if you have any suggestions or ideas that could help me.

Thanks for your help,

ddb.consolidateDestFileName / ddb.resumeConsolidateSector

Sparse vmdks in WS 12 have introduced 2 new parameters:
ddb.consolidateDestFileName
ddb.resumeConsolidateSector
Are this temporary parameters only - used during a consolidation - and should we expect that they are removed again after the consolidation ?

NAT controller dies with vmware player 12.1.0

I have a working copy of VMware player 6.0.6 and was trying to upgrade it to version 12.1.0. The upgrade goes successfully and the images all start up fine. However, in my case I am using the NAT network adapter for the images and NAT seems to be very unstable on this release. I am running the player on a linux x64 machine and I can see with vmware-networks --status that NAT is working. I can ssh or vnc into my image 1-2 times successfully and then NAT crashes and I have to restart it with vmware-networks --start for some reason.

Has anyone else seen this type of behavior?

Can't change number of CPUs on Player

$

Hi,

I'm a new user but have searched the forums and FAQ and can't find the answer.

I have VMWare Workstation Player version 12 for Linux.  Host is Fedora 23 on a quad-core i5 processor with 8 GB RAM.  Guest OS is Windows 7.  This is for personal use so I don't have a license key.

The issue I'm having is that several settings cannot be changed, most importantly the number of CPUs. The selection is greyed out and set to 1.  Additionally, the hard disk and display (graphics) parameters cannot be edited either.

I have tried both with the vm powered off and with it powered on.  Doesn't make a difference, the settings are greyed out.

I've searched everywhere for the explanation but haven't found a clue.  Please help!

Thanks,

DW

Workstation 12 port forwarding

Hello, I have downloaded and installed the VMWare Virtual Network Editor for my Workstation 12 Player. I created a NAT adapter in which I added some ports. The ports are now used by VMWare NAT Service process however they are closed on my virtual machine. I need those ports to run an application.

Here's how my configuration looks like: http://i.imgur.com/xggRGPF.png

What could be the problem?

Remote connecting from VM with High DPI Monitor Laptop

$

I use a Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd Generation with High DPI Monitor as a host computer where I connect to Window 7 VM with Workstation 12 Player. I've installed VMWare tools and increased the text size on Windows 7 VM to 200% (although with 150% applications' looks ok too.). My problem starts when I remote connect from the Windows 7 VM to another Windows 7 computer. The remotely connected computer inherits the setting from the host (I guess) and everything on that computer is too small. I've downloaded Remote desktop connections manager and installed on VM. I've disabled all inherit parents features under display settings and remote desktop connection tabs but  remotely connected computer applications can barely seen, they are too small.

Any suggestion will be appreciated to resolve this issue.

Thank you.

Application will not open, no error

I made a virtual machine of my old vista system.  All the programs open just fine except the one I need to work.  However, I get no error.  I just double click on the app and nothing happens.  I don't even know how to diagnose this, I cant find an error or anything.  The old machine still opens the app fine.

ZM Workstation Player not working properly

Hi,

I'm having difficulties with VM workstation player 12, the program itself randomly hangs and doesn't respond anymore. Or sometimes when I wait for a few minutes it comes back, but then every few actions I that take after that locks up the program again, which keeps repeating like this.

By waiting out every locks up I was have been able to get at the point where the player actually starts installing, but then the virtual screen stays black, it locks up again, and after a few minutes it seems like a VM is created, but I can't start it, it just shows an error and refuses to start the VM.

I tried to re-install the player e few times, Also with an advanced uninstaller so that no files or registry entries are left behind, but this behavior keeps coming back. Even the installer and uninstaller are having difficulties to run normally. I also tried installing VM player 6, but it acts the same.

I also tried using Virtualbox, which has no issues, but I prefer to use VMware.

I am running Win8.1 Pro x64. I want to create a Ubuntu x64 VM. I'm not an expert, but could this have something to do with the fact that I'm on a domain, and that my home/user folder is actually server based? I had issues in the past with another program that was having difficulties reading/writing to "Appdata" because it wasn't on a local disk.

Hope someone can help me.

Thanks!

I am attempting to install Windows 95 OSR2.5 on VMWare Workstation Player 12. I have it configured with 64MB of RAM and 1 processor core with VT-x disabled. When I tried to boot the virtual machine, I received an error:

[msg.log.error.unrecoverable] VMware Player unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) [msg.panic.haveLog] A log file is available in "/home/charlie/vmware/Windows 95 OSR2.5/vmware.log".

Attached is my log file. Hopefully I can receive assistance informally in the forums.
