VMware-Player-14.1.3 does not start because it asks for a kernel update

Problem: The kernel already has this update.

How can I make the Player run?

In detail:

For my openSUSE Leap 15.0 64bit I downloaded VMware-Player-14.1.3-9474260.x86_64.bundle

After logon as the user who shall run the Player I opened an Xterm.

su root

sh VMware-Player-14.1.3-9474260.x86_64.bundle

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module canberra-gtk-module: libcanberra-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

But the Installer startet and claimed "Installation was successful." at the end.

When I then tried to start the Player it did not work:

"Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. Kernel Headers 4.12.14-lp150.12.16-default

were not found. Refer to your distribution's documentation for installation instructions."

<Cancel>

uname -r answers 4.12.14-lp150.12.16-default

That means the kernel which the Player asks for is installed.

My PC has an Intel Core i5-3570 processor and 8 GB RAM.

Player 15 won't run: Ubuntu 18.04, UEFI, vmmon, vmnet

I'm trying out Player 15, hoping to upgrade to Workstation Pro. But I can't get either to run.

I have the dreaded "could not open /dev/vmmon". I've followed these instructions several times now:

VMware Knowledge Base

and the keys seem to be loaded. But running

$ sudo /usr/src/linux-headers-`uname -r`/scripts/sign-file sha256 ./MOK.priv ./MOK.der $(modinfo -n vmmon)
libkmod: ERROR ../libkmod/libkmod.c:586 kmod_search_moddep: could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/4.15.0-34-generic/modules.dep.bin'
modinfo: ERROR: Module alias vmmon not found.

So some other suggested:

$ sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
...
Starting VMware services:   Virtual machine monitor                                            failed   Virtual machine communication interface                             done   VM communication interface socket family                            done   Blocking file system                                                done   Virtual ethernet                                                   failed   VMware Authentication Daemon                                        done

I've attached the output from that last command.

When I try to run Player (or Workstation) it tells me multiple modules need to be compiled but doing so seems to be of no effect.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing. No difference.

Can anyone instruct me on how to get either Player or Workstation running on a UEFI Ubuntu 18.04 system? Thanks.

Windows 10 VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR due to vm3dmp.sys

My VM running on Windows 10 has been getting BSOD VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR every few days,

so I downloaded WhoCrashed and attached analysis of the crash below.

I have also attached the minidump file.

What could be the cause and how do i diagnose/resolve it?

On Fri 9/28/2018 3:59:54 PM your computer crashed or a problem was reported

crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP

This was probably caused by the following module: vm3dmp.sys (vm3dmp+0x5FEA)

Bugcheck code: 0x119 (0x1, 0x10E130D0, 0x10E130D1, 0xFFFFAA8CC3867000)

Bug check description: This indicates that the video scheduler has detected a fatal violation.

A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: vm3dmp.sys (VMware SVGA 3D Miniport, VMware, Inc.).

VMWare 14 & NVMe controller - Windows 7 MS In-Box driver incompatible

Hi,

On my VMWare Player 14, I have selected NVMe disk and created a Virtual Windows 7 64 Guest in EFI Mode.

The Microsoft NVMe driver for Windows 7 (Hotfix 2990941 & 3087873) are integrated into Windows 7 ISO.

Yet  Windows 7 Guest setup fails to progress beyond Starting Windows logo. You remove NVMe disk and put SATA or SCSI and it installs fine.

Where could be the issue? Is this some sort of bug in MS Driver or could it be some bug in the VMWare NVMe controller?

Would appreciate further clarity on the same.

Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.

Does anyone know how to get rid of it giving me the message below every time I run VMware Player 15? After I click "Install" and enter my password, in a few seconds it comes up and runs normally. But next time I open it the same message appears. Any help appreciated.

VMware player unable to start virtual machine on ubuntu 18.04

Hi,

I have just replaced vmware player 12.5.9 with the 15.0.0 because the previous version was incompatible with ubuntu 18.04

Unfortunately I have just found that even this version has problems with ubuntu

The installation has been done correctly, but when I try to open my existing virtual machines the gui is unable to do it

I tried to open a vm from the shell with the command: vmplayer my_vmmachine_name

The result is that vmplayer sends the following errors on the shell then it opens the vm.

error.png

When the vm is running I receive the following error saying that the disk is not present

error2.png

libgail and atk are properly installed.

Attached you find the log file where are present other errors.

In particular it seems that the installer ask for files not present

Any dsuggestion about how to solve this problem?

Thanks

Claudio

Need help setting up DHCP on virtual machine

Hey all, so I'm computer systems student, currently learning setting up windows server using vmware..I have faced some problems so hoping that someone could help me.

Let me explain what I need to do:

So I have Windows server 2008 virtual machine running on my physical computer, let's say my physical pc ip is: 192.168.0.100 , I have bridged connection with my Virtual windows server and set it ip manually to 192.168.0.102 , and now I have task to create a DHCP server on virtual windows server and create another virtual machine for example with windows 7 , on the same network, let's say it's vmnet0 , the virtual windows server is also on vmnet0 , so I'm not sure if I understand the task correctly but is it possible to do this ? I mean to create a DHCP server on my virtual windows server and then assign ip address to another virtual machine, if so, how to do that ? I have already installed DHCP server on virtual windows server but not sure if I done it correctly so just wanna ask how to do it the right way.

VmWare Player 15.0 stalls/disappears on fully patched windows 10 64-bit host

On October 15, 2018, I downloaded VmWare Player 15 (VMware-player-15.0.0-10134415.exe), unblocked it, and started a "Run as Administrator" install of that exe.

Everything seemed to start up fine (splash screen, small progress dialog in lower-right of screen), but after a few seconds, everything disappeared.

When I tried to start a fresh install, a warning message displayed that an install was already in progress (despite zero physical/visual evidence) .

Is there any type of log that I can turn on and/or look at that shows whether or not the installation has stalled, yet still shows as running?

My environment:

Microsoft Surface Book 2

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

Intel i7 CPU

WinVer 1803 (OS Build 17134.345)

Hi,

We are using VM Player 14 on CentOS 7.x, its everyday going to not responding state & CPU usage is very high. "vmplayer" process which consumes more CPU usage. Once we kill the services its come to normal. Until that time we cannot able to open/work on VMs. Attached error screenshot fyr.

Anyone facing similar issue? or share some light to fix this issue permanently.

Thank in Advance

VMW Player Problems Creating Ubuntu Guest on DELL XPS 15 9570

$

I'm attempting to create a Ubuntu 18.04 guest on a Windows 10 Pro DELL XPS 15 9570 and am running into issues. The physical hardware is a Core i9 CPU, 16Gb RAM and a single 1TB SSD. There is no physical CDRom drive.

1. My first step is to select "Installer disc image file (iso)" and choose the Ubuntu 64bit iso image downloaded from their web site.

2. Follow the defaults up to specifying the disk capacity. Here I choose 160Gb and a single file.

3. Power on the VM.

Before hand I've checked the virtualisation is enabled in the BIOS (of course it is, this is a brand new laptop).

While the VM tries to boot, I first receive an error: "PXE-E53: No boot filename received". This is immediately followed by: "PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM" and then simply "Operating System not found".

I've never owned a laptop with only an SSD before so not sure if this is the root of the problem. I have VMWare Player running fine with a Ubuntu 18.04 guest on another machine with a more standard configuration of 1TB SCSI hard drive and CDRom.

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Why can't I find "Autofit guest" in VMWare Player 15.0.0 build-10134415 ?

$

When I launch my Windows Server 2016 Standard VM using VMWare Player 15.0.0 build-10134415, it does not automatically "fit to guest", which is my Windows 10 64-bit Microsoft Surface Book 2, which has a display resolution of 3240 x 2160.

I cannot find a menu or setting within VMWare Player 15.0.0 build-10134415 that permits "Autofit guest" or any of the other traditional VMWare "fit to..." settings.

I have changed the VM's local resolution to the highest setting allowed by Windows / Settings / Display Settings / Advanced Settings, which is 2048 x 1536, but that takes up only a fraction of the available display space.

Even setting VMWare Player 15.0.0 build-10134415 to "Full Screen" does not cause the underlying VM to use the full available display space.

Is what I am trying to do even possible with VMWare Player 15.0.0 build-10134415?

My environment:

Microsoft Surface Book 2

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

Intel i7 CPU

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, version 1803, OS Build 17134.345
