Hardware acceleration on Haswell platforms

$

I am running Ubuntu on a laptop which is powered by a Intel core i7-4800 (Haswell architecture).

I have a VM setup with Windows 7 for two applications which do not run with Wine. The problem is that both these applications need USB support to either a card reader or directly to a device.

The USB support in VMware player is good, but there are no hardware accelerated graphics available so Windows is running terribly slow (Virtualbox does support hardware acceleration on my laptop but it's USB support is terrible).

Is there a new version of vmware coming shortly which fully supports the hardware acceleration for the graphics chip in the Haswell CPU?

VMWare 6.0 Bridged Networking Failure

$

I have an issue where I'm using VMware Player 6.0.0. The bridged networking suddenly failed and I can't seem to get it working again. The NAT option works so I'm not totally out of action. I'd like to get bridged networking working again. I tried to find vmnetconfig.exe but it doesn't seem to be available in the expanded player executable or expanded cab files within. So the previously published solution doesn't work. I also tried downloading player 4.0 and using vmnetconfig from that but it doesn't work. So given that I'm on player 6.0, how can I fix the bridged network option?

My host OS is Windows 8 and my guest OS is Windows XP. 64 bit.

Thanks.

VMware Player for Lubuntu 12.0.4 Linux on an old PowerPC MacMini?

Hello!

I am running Lubuntu 12.0.4 Linux on an old PowerPC MacMini. I am interested in installing a VMware Player in order to be able to run some other platforms, e.g. Windows.

Will the VMware Player run on my machine? If yes, what is the correct version to download?

VMware Player fails to initialize after upgrading to version 6

When starting VMWare Player 6, all UI elements are missing and there are several boxes on the right side of the window. After several seconds, Windows reports the application as "not responding". Memory, CPU and disk usage are all low. So as far as I can tell, the application is not simply busy. I've never had any problems like this with VMWare Player 5.0.x and earlier, and I can still downgrade to a fully functioning 5.0.2. However, I'd really like to upgrade to take advantage of support for newer Guest OS's.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get VMWare Player 6 working correctly?

I've attached a screenshot of the VMWare Player window. I'm using Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit on an Intel Core 2 Duo (E8400). Please let me know if I can provide any other information that might help.

How to connect to LAN with XP virtual machine?

$

First post. Thank you for having me on these boards.

I am a total beginner with virtual machines. I need to have both W7 x64 and XP Professional on the same laptop. On a previous machine I set up a dual boot to achieve this and it worked fine.

On a new laptop I thought I would try to set up a virtual XP machine.

I have VMwarePlayer installed and I can connect to the internet. I think I can do it from the virtual machine but I am not sure about this - I may be connecting from the host. I can use both OS's and install files into each. But, I cannot connect to my LAN - 3 PCs and several laptops. Ordinarily, the LAN works pretty well. When I follow the usual XP dialogues for LAN connection these just take me round in circles.

The IP address of my virtual machine is 192.168.147.128 - an odd address to me. My router would not allow me to use it either - insisting on 192.168.0.XXX.

The second question is about file sharing between the virtual machine and the host.  I understand that I will not be able to install W7 files on the XP virtual machine, but can other files e.g. jpg, bmp files be shared?

If anyone is kind enough to reply, please keep it as simple as possible.  Thanks!

Drag'n'Drop of large Files - Just a thought

$

Hi there.

Recently I was using the Drag'n'Drop-Feature of VMWare Player a lot, and I came to wonder: when there's a "Copying Files..."-Dialog displayed by the Windows Explorer, is the process of copying files done by the Explorer (or at least the Shell API) ?

Well, it is - sort of. VMWare seems to copy all the files into a directory in %TEMP%, and then moves them to the desired destination (this behavior seems to be dictated by the way the Shell handles file drops, though).

But, there's no possibility to abort the process of copying into %TEMP%!

So, in case someone would copy a large amount of data, big enough not to fit on the filesystem where %TEMP% points to, one will have to wait until the process fails, or kill VMWare.

I tried that, and VMWare also does not seem to check the available disk space on the %TEMP%-Drive (it's usually C: on Windows, which is not meant to be filled up completely).

Also, the way it's currently done, if you're not dragging to the same filesystem, the files will have to be copied twice.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to specify the position where the files should be placed (e.g., having a dialog popping up asking for the destination and abort the Drag'n'Drop process instead)?

But, as I the title says, it's just a thought, and copying large amounts of data using drag'n'drop might be a very rare use case.

openSUSE 12.3 Guest on VMware Player 6 Windows 7 Host

Hello,

I'm using VMPlayer 6 on Windows 7 and trying to install openSUSE 12.3.  This caused me no problem in version 5.

This is a clean install from the DVD ISO which is the 32Bit version.  When installing I choose 'I will nstall the operating system later'.

I choose 1280MB for RAM, and a 25GB Hard Disk.  The installation seems to go fine, but when finished it just shows the green openSUSE backgraound and there are icons or other information.

Just so I could test the ISO, I also installed VirtualBox and the installation worked fine.

Please let me know if you need anymore information.

Thanks

Random Disconnects of Audio Devices in VMs

$

System setup is the current VMware Player 5.0.1 build 894247 running on 64-bit Windows 7 SP1.

Virtual Machines are two 32-bit WinXP SP3 setups.

The host has two USB audio devices connected to it, in addtion to the RealTek HD audio system on the motherboard.   One is a Griffin Electronics "iMic", the other is a Behringer UCA202. Both devices use the generic Win7  usbaudio.sys  class driver.   I have successfully overridden the default mapping of the motherboard audio, and have mapped both USB devices through VMware Player correctly to show up in the VMs as the usual "Creative Audio PCI (ES1371" virtual device. (One USB device is used by each VM.)

Applications on the VMs receive a constant stream of audio input to the "line-input" jacks of the physical devices with absolutely no problems through the virtual Soundblasters in each virtual machine.

However,  when an application in the VM goes tooriginate audio (i.e. use the "playback" side rather than the "record" side of the virtual sound card), the virtual sound card will randomly disconnect.    There are no crashes, lockups  or error messages.  The speaker icon with the green virtual LED on the VMware tool bar just greys out, and all audio activity, input or output, ceases.     The failure is non-fatal -- I can right-click the speaker icon, choose "Connect" and the setup starts functioning again -- for a while.    .

There  appeares to be no consistent repeatable pattern to the disconnect.  Sometimes the disconnect happens almost immediately, other times it will be several hours and multiple playback sessions before the disconnect occurs.   I have determined that it is PLAYBACK that triggers the failure - Applications in the VM can use audio input to the "Record" side of the virtual Soundblaster indefintely without failure, as long as I don't attempt any playback activity.

I'm not sure how Direct-X on the VM machines affects all this, but for what it's worth, the latest and last ever version for XP (9.0c) is installed.

I found a forum post elsewhere on the site about fixing audio problems with an entry in the VMX something like this:

usb.quirks.device0 = "0x08BB:0x2902 skip-reset, skip-refresh, skip-setconfig"
usb:0.present = "TRUE"
usb:0.deviceType = "hid"
usb:0.port = "0"
usb:0.parent = "-1"

but it had no effect on the problem.

Any throughts on patches, updates, or  "magical mystery" registry tweaks (either on the host or in the VMs), or similar entries in the VMX files to address this issue????

For reference, here is a dump of  the VMX file of one of the VMS.

Win7 & Win2008 guest Black Screen (Unity Mode) problems

$

I have found a problem with Windows 7 and Windows 2008R2 Guests that doesn't seem to exist with Windows XP guests.

I always park my guests in Unity Mode so that i can use Internet Explorer 7-8-9 from WinXP and Win7 and my databases running in Win2008

if i then Sleep my Host OS, my Win7 and Win2008 will exit Unity Mode and be locked in BlackScreen forever with no way to recover, other than rebooting the guest. My WinXP guests doesnt have that problem, they simply resume and are good to go...

I also experience the problem of BlackScreen if i shut down my monitor (connected with DisplayPort, which causes Windows 7 Monitor detection to engage) -- after turning on the monitor, my Windows 7 and Windows 2008 guest have BlackScreen because Unity Mode failed...

I hope this will help debuggers find and kill the problems with BlackScreen guest

NAT: DNS returns bogus entries

Almost the same thing as a few years ago happened:

server 1.0.10 NAT: DNS not working

xerces8 wrote (Nov 2, 2009 1:40 PM):

I just updated VMWare Server from 1.0.9 to 1.0.10 and now DNS does not work in guest that have set up NAT networking.

Tried Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, also Windows XP. All using default (automatic) network settings.

I can ping any numerical address, but DNS resolution does not work.

If I set manually a DNS server offered by my ISP in the guests, then it works.

Is this some regression with 1.0.10 ? I'm sure the same VM worked before the update.

Regards,

David

This time I was using VMWare Player 5.0.2 on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.

I had a few VMs working fine.

Then I updated to Player 6.0.0, created a new VM for Windows8 and installed Windows 8.1 Preview into it.

There I noticed tha DNS does not work;

- ping 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server) - works

- nslookup www.najdi.si returns:

C:\Users\stein>nslookup www.najdi.si

Address:  192.168.91.2

- ping www.najdi.si gives:

Ping request could not find host www.najdi.si. Please check the name and try again.

- ipconfig /all output:

A Ubuntu guest VM also had problems with DNS resolution (worked fine before), so I decided to revert back to Player version 5.0.2.

It did not help, so I uninstalled it, cleaned up ( "Manually cleaning a Windows system" at VMware KB: Cleaning up after an incomplete uninstallation on a Windows host ) and then reinstalled Player v5.0.2.

After that a quick test with http://www.sysresccd.org ISO worked, but when I tried the Windows 8.1 VM the problems started again.

I started the SystemRescueCd again and I got:

% ping rtv.si
PING rtv.si.localdomain (91.185.213.134) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 91.185.213.134: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=13.1 ms
64 bytes from 91.185.213.134: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=13.9 ms

This is slightly better, but still not correct (it should say "PING rtv.si" , not "PING rtv.si.localdomain").

It seems the DNS server of VMWare Player is sending broken replies.

Any idea how to resolve this?

Getting Access Violation Error MacBook Air 2013 Bootcamp and Windows 8.1 RTM

I am getting the following error on VMWare Player 6:

VMWare Unrecoverable Error (vthread -14)

Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) has occurred

It happens on any guest (XP, Win7, Win 8, Win8.1) that is using VMWare tools.  Happens on 32 bit, 64 bit.  I have copied VMs from another machine (no MacBook air) that also has Windows 8.1RTM that works just fine.  No matter what I do, it causes the above violation on my 2013 MacBook Air running Boot camp and Win 8.1RTM.

This same MacBook was running win 8.0 and this issue did not happen.  Only after upgrading to 8.1RTM did it start.

I also tried to install clean OS....  worked fine until I installed VMWare Tools.  That's what seems to crash.

I have attached the log file if that helps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Using Guest OS in portrait oriented monitor.

Is there a configuration that allows the guest OS to use all of the vertical space available?

I am using XP as a host and VMplayer 5.02, with VMware Tools up to date. I've been using various window and display managers on an Ubuntu 12.04 guest OS on VMplayer without a problem for some time (i.e., I don't have other config problems right now and everything is up to date).

I switched the host OS (Win XP) to portrait mode and guest OS is now in portrait mode as well. However, while I can maximize the VMplayer window the guest OS window is not using the available screen real estate.  There doesn't seem to be guest display settings that will use the full screen. The biggest guest screen I can get is a by setting the resolution to "auto" and then I get a square display only using half of the physical screen.

BSOD 3d after P2V conversion of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit pc

Hello to all,
I did a conversion with Converter 5.0 on my notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit , which is successful . I did start the virtual machine with the Player 6.0 and has started and recognized the new virtual hardware properly and asked the restart. But the new reboot, nothing to do, BSOD 3d appears . I enclose a picture with detail error . I tried to do what is indicated for the BSOD 7b error, but it has not solved the problem. If I start the VM with F8 and select " Last Known Good Configuration functioning " then the VM starts , it recognizes the new virtual hardware components correctly and asks for reboot. And here we go again with BSOD 3d .
I suppose the problem is the disk driver , but I do not know how to solve.
I thank anyone who can suggest something to solve !

Minimize to Tray while under Unity...

$

Hi!

Since some time ago, I have VMware player installed on my computer. I must say I love how the software works, indeed! And the Unity mode is a fun toy to play with! But, it has something that should be fixed, I think. I don't know how VMware workstation works under Unity, but I guess its the same as Player.

As you enter Unity mode, the VMware player window minimizes to the taskbar. This window is confusing sometimes, and its OBSTRUCTIVE. It doesn't have anymore the system itself, and it becomes practically useless.

I think this useless window should be removed, and the program minimized to the system tray (not the guest programs themselves, but the VMware window). I have this suggestion:

The VMware Player/Workstation window is minimized to system tray by default when entering Unity. It has the following options when right-clicked:

*Exit Unity Mode: Exits Unity, returning the guest OS to its windowed mode.

(Separation)

*Show VMware on Taskbar: For those that don't mind the obstructive taskbar item and useless window.

*Help on using Unity: Shows the help for Unity Mode.

*VMWare on the Web: Opens the VMware website on the Host OS.

(Separation)

*Guest System Tray Notifications: This section shows the Guest OS System tray icons.

(Separation)

*Guest Programs: An application menu, besides the one that activates while hovering the Host Start menu.

*Check for updates: Checks for newer versions for VMWare Player/Workstation, as well as VMWare Tools.

*Machine Settings: Opens the Configuration window.

*Power Options: Options to reset/suspend/power off, and maybe an ACPI Power off.

*About VMWare: Shows the About window.

*Kill Application: Exits VMware.

I hope you take this into account, since it would be quite useful.

Connecting External HD through USB

I am trying to connect an external hard drive to my VMWare player. The VMWare player is able to read the external hard drive, but when I try to connect it through Removable Devices I get the error "the device is currently in use". Any ideas for how to fix?

Some additional information: I have Symantec Endpoint Protection installed on my computer. Could this security software be preventing me from connecting?

Thanks,
