Issue: sticky CTRL and ALT keys, inconsistent mouse focus when neo2 German keyboard layout is used on host-OS

$

Hi all,

if the "neo2" German keyboard layout is selected on the host-OS, then the major UI problems are experienced:

1. Mouse focus between guest and host is totally inconsistent, clicks are not caught neither on guest-OS, nor on host-OS.

2. CTRL and ALT keys are getting sticky both on guest-OS and host-OS. For example ALT-Tab on host-OS brings the application switch dialog that remains on top forever. Maybe other keys, like Win-key are also sticky -- it is difficult to test.

If one selects a plain "En" keyboard layout on host-OS, then things are almost OK, however neo2 layout on guest OS is not fully working: the right AltGr key is not working.

Are there any solutions/workaurounds for this issue?

How do I eliminate the message that my evaluation license note will end in 28 days? (VM Player)

How do I eliminate the message that my evaluation license note will end in 28 days? (VM Player)

I installed VMWare Workstation 2 days prior. THen I uninstalled VMWare Workstation prior to the installation of VM Player 6. That said, when I start VM Player 6 I get the following note:

Your evaluation license will expire in 28 days. To continue, commercial use of this product, purchase a license.

I desired a personal free copy.

How do I correct this as a personal copy and not an evaluation license ending in 28 days?

Thank you in advance.

VM Player not working well with new Mint 17 install

I recently went from using windows 7 to Linux Mint 17 (cinnamon) by way of a duel boot gone wrong. Now I have decided to use it as a learning experience and continue using it. The only thing that I have found to be an issue is that the VM's I started on windows run either very slowly and/or stop working entirely. The VM player I am using is 6.0.3 build-1895310 which was preinstalled with the OS. The first time I ran it I was able to get VMtools installed. After about 30 minuets of waiting I was also able to check for any updates which there is none. This is the same machine with the same hardware that I installed it on, just a different OS. Is this an issue from creating it on windows and using it on linux or is it something else entirely?

Windows Service cannot read VMWare Player shared folder

Hey forum,

I have vmware player installed on an Ubuntu 14.04 host and have a VM running Windows 7. This VM has a shared folder that contains some files. There is also a WinRun4J Windows service that needs to access these files on the shared folder. For some reason I get an error. This is the error:

java.io.FileNotFoundException: Z:\data\configs\service.config (The system cannot find the path specified)

Z exists. The file exists. The path is correct. I can see the file in explorer. I can access the file with Notepad++, I can even access this file using the same Java code using WinRun4J from a cmd shell. It only fails when this code is run as a service. Unfortunately it needs to run as a service. How can I fix this?

I already tried running the service under the same user account as I'm logged in as. This didn't solve the problem.

VMWare Player: 6.0.3-1895310.x86_64

Windows: 6.1.7601

WinRun4J: 0.4.5

thanks,

Jurgen

VMware Player disables/disrupts Windows "Mouse Keys" feature

$

Is it the case that VMware Player disables (or otherwise disrupts) the Windows "Mouse Keys" feature?

I set up a new account on the Windows machine, turned on the "Mouse Keys" feature ("Start" > "Control Panel" >  "Ease of Access Center" > "Make the mouse easier to use" > "Turn on Mouse Keys").  I then verified that pressing keys on the numeric keypad of my keyboard did indeed move the mouse as per this Microsoft webpage: <http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/use-mouse-keys-to-move-the-mouse-pointer>.

I then started VMware Player and ran a virtual machine in it.  I noted that the "Mouse Keys" feature did not move the cursor inside the virtual machine.  However, when I moved the mouse cursor outside the Player window (using the mouse), onto the Windows desktop, then keypresses on the numeric keypad no longer move the mouse cursor.  Even after I quit Player, the "Mouse Keys" functionality is lost.  Windows still shows that option is selected.  (Turning the option off and then back on does not bring back the function.)

Am I missing something?  How can I get back the "Mouse Keys" functionality and/or prevent Player from affecting it?  (I was testing whether or not "Mouse Keys" would work inside the virtual machine.)

VMX file stays corrupt.

For over a month I have been running Mac OS X Mavericks on WMware player 6.0.3 on my windows 8.1 host. One day my computer crashed while I was running Mavericks and when I went to start Mavericks up after restarting my computer I was met with the message that the vmx file was corrupt and Mavericks wouldn't run. Here is a list of things I've done to fix the problem that have all resulted in the same error message "VMX file is corrupt.":

  • Use backup files.
  • Create a new vm with the old components in an attempt to create a new vmx file.
  • Completely remove all files pertaining to virtual machines or vmware. Uninstall vmware. Re install and re-download everything I used the first time I successfully created the Mavericks vm and follow the same process as that time.
  • Use the vmware player installer "repair" function.
  • Use a self made ISO file.

Everything has resulted in the same error message and I am at my wits end as I have tried every solution I've found on the internet. Like I said before the crash my vm seemed to run perfectly.

So does anyone have any advice for how I could get back on Mavericks? I'm not too worried about recovering the data from my previous activity, I just want it to work.

Thanks!

Connect USB device via vmrun command or VIX API

Hi everybody,

I have already read a lot of discussions about this topic in the forums but most of them are quite out-dated and had no solutions for my specific problem.

In the meantime, is there any way to programatically connect or disconnect USB devices via command line or any API to a virtual machine? My use case is as follows: I am starting my VM in headless mode (vmrun -T player start "myVM.vmx" nogui). When connecting a specific USB stick to the host computer, I do NOT want it to be connected to the virtual machine but to the host operating system. When any other USB stick is connected to the host computer, I want those to be connected directly to the virtual machine, i.e. the guest operating system.

Do you have any suggestions how to achieve this goal with VMware Player or Workstation? Is it possible to do this programatically?

Thanks in advance!

Ubuntu 14.04 and SDL2 (2.0.2)

I am working on a programming engine in C/C++ with SDL2, and whilst my system works, there are some weird display problems.  For example, when using a resolution of 640x480 the origin coordinates of 0,0 are at the top-right of a window, whilst using 1024x768 the coordinates are at the top-left of a window.

In addition, whilst SDL2_ttf creates a text surface, nothing is actually displayed.

I have the Toolkit installed.

I am wondering whether it is a limitation of the free version of Player or because the Mesa drivers aren't the latest, SDL2 (or SDL 1.2 even) will have problems.

Insufficient permission to access file (38).

I installed the VMware player 4.0.1 update and now I cannot run any of my Linux guests. Get lots of permission errors, even though I have full control over the files and directories as user and administrator. So I look in the log file and find lots of error messages like the following:

The problem here is that I am running WMware Player, NOT VMware Workstation.

The "VMware Workstation" folder is empty, the config.ini file is in the "VMWare Player" folder.

Anybody know how to fix this?????

Upgrade to Player 6.0.1 causes Ctrl-Alt-Enter (fullscreen shortcut) to break

$

Upgraded from Player 5 to v6.0.1 (Win 7 Pro x64 host, Ubuntu 12.04 x64 guest). Now, it boots up the guest in fullscreen mode, but with a small desktop. I *think* it sometimes did this on Player 5, but a couple of Ctrl-Alt-Enters (out-of / back-into fullscreen mode) fixed it.

With Player 6.0.1, Ctrl-Alt-Enter shortcut no longer works (at all), and I have to use the toolbar icon (which works). When I exit the VM (returning to the VM library screen), this window is now as though it was a VM itself (in fullscreen mode with drop-down toolbar; in Player 5 it was just a normal Windows window, which is what it still is in 6.0.1 until you close the VM). When in this state, I *can* Ctrl-Alt-Enter to return it to a normal window and close it. It's as though the VM library window has somehow become a pseudo-VM which is the target for the Ctrl-Alt-Enter shortcut instead of the running VM.

I tried it with 'Return to the VM library after closing a virtual machine' unchecked, but the problem remains.

Anyone else having this issue? Is this a known 6.0.1 issue? Any way of re-enabling Ctrl-Alt-Enter.

Thanks.

Stuart

Hi

im wondering if VMware Player (free version, in my case - Linux) will be able to access a PCI USB 2.0 Controller? As far as I know, VMWare doesnt play well with USB 3.0, this would bea good option.

Thanks.

No http / https access after uninstalling VMware Player

Hello,

I had installed VMware Player v6.0.3 on a system running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit. After uninstalling it, http and https Access does not work anymore (FTP and mail are working). I tried http with Firefox, IE and Opera without success.

Ping to e.g. Google.com resolves the address, but causes a "generic error", and no answer from the host.

Then, I have installed VMware Player again, and everything works fine. Uninstalled again, no http / https.

At the moment, I have it installed, but this is no solution for me. Please, has anyone a idea to fix this?

Best regards, Axel

Setup up Internet for Linux Guest

Hi, I just installed Linux Mint 17 in a VM (host is Win7) but can't get internet access working. I'm connected to my local network and see shared folders, but internet just doesn't work.

I've installed Linux to take an introductory course, so any instructions for Linux will have to be super simple, but I have an intermediate knowledge of Windows.

Networking in Player is set to NAT.

I tried to install VMWare Tools, but I'm not sure I succeeded - the instructions at the bottom of the install terminal didn't work, probably because I did something wrong or wasn't looking at the correct instructions for Player.

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Can I do this as a service? What does the community suggest?

VMWare player 6.03 can't connect to network/internet

$

I have a problem I haven't been able to correct.  I have a Ubuntu VM that I have been using for the last year for safe web surfing.  It hasn't had a single problem, even transferring between host machines, until this past weekend.  All of a sudden, I powered it up on Saturday, and it kept telling me the network was disconnected.  I have it set up for VM NAT, so it should connect if the host's network is connected.  I only have one wired NIC on the host, and it is working perfectly.  The host is a Core i7 3930k running Windows 8.1 with all the patches.  I have tried uninstalling the VMWare player, rebooting, and reinstalling, and it will work, for one power up.  As soon as I power the VM back down and back up, it quits connecting.  I'm going to try making a new VM with a different OS to see if that sees the same behavior, but I haven't been able to try it yet.  I won't be back home to try it until after 5:30pm tonight.

Two things have changed since I last used it: I added a bluetooth dongle to connect to my phone and I installed Microsoft's latest patches.  Does anyone know if either of these things could cause this problem?  If I can determine this before I get home, that would be great and save me more troubleshooting.

Using a Belkin F5L009 with vm ware player running debian linux

Hello everybody,

Thank you four all your help in advance.

Goal:

I would like to connect a SimTrace SIM Sniffer from sysmocom to the belkin usb network hub F5L009 (Firmware v1-2-0).

And then use it inside a virtual debian system running in a vm ware player on a windows 8 host system.

The build should look like this in the end:

SimTrace SIM Sniffer <-> Belkin USB network hub <-> windows 8 host machine <-> vm ware player running debian

So that i can access the Sim Trace SIM Sniffer in my debian system:

Symptomes:

If i am connecting the SimTrace SIM Sniffer directly to my windows host system, i can connect it to debian inside the vmware player via the removeable devices.

However this is not the final solution as the SimTrace Sniffer needs to be in a special place which is not in the reach of a USB cable.

If i am connecting the SimTrace SIM Sniffer to the belkin network usb hub i can only connect it to my windows host system via the Belkin Network USB Host Control Center.

It does not show up in the removeable devices from the vmware player.

For this reasons I can´t connect it to the debian system.

In Addition the device has a different name in the device manage if it is connected via the belkin network usb hub as if it is directly connected: (below is the one when connected via belkin usb network hub)

DeviceName

Questions:

Is it possible to connect a USB device to a vm ware guest system using the belkin usb network hub F5L009?

Is it possible to connect the SimTrace SIM Sniffer to a debian system running in a vm ware player on a windows 8 host machine?

Please note that I am contacting both sides (vm ware player and belkin) in order to ask for help.

If you are having any questions please contact me via email or just reply to this post here.

Kind regards,

Philipp S.

ThinPrint: virtual printing doesn't work

$

Hello,

I am new with vmware player and ThinPrint. The summary of the problem is: Virtual printing from the vmware client using the printers of the host does not work,

because no virtual printers are displayed at the client. First some information about the system environment:

The vmware player version is 6.0.3 build-1895310, the host OS is Windows 7 professional 32bit SP1, the client OS is Windows XP home SP3 (without network connectivity).

Latest VMWare tools with option 'virtual printing' are installed and the TPAutoConnSvc service is running at the client. A printer device has been added by the vmware setup

'using serial port 1 of the virtual machine', as as shown in the virtual machine settings. Accordingly to the device manager of the client (virtual machina) the COM1 port exists

and is operational. The host PC has a default printer installed, which is also working without problems.

I tried several things to get printing from the client using the printer of the host to work (setup a printer using the ThinPrint print port and the ThinPrint Output Gateway driver manually,

enabled debug log for TPAutoConnect), but could not fix the following issue:

c:\Programme\VMware\VMware Tools>TPAutoConnect.exe -v -q -i vmware -a COM1 -F 30

ThinPrint AutoConnect component, Copyright (c) 1999-2013 Cortado AG, 8.8.774.1

Can't connect to virtual channel (5).

No suitable client protocol found.

No printers to be created in this session were found.

This is the output of the command (as originally found in the registry of the client, with additional option -v for verbose output), which is used by ThinPrint to startup TPAutoConnect.

Accordingly to the debug log the 'virtual channel (5)' corresponds to COM1 and connection through this channel fails:

VMWare does not support external Touro 3.0 drive

VMWare Player / Workstation is actually rubbish,

Inbuilt webcam on HP does not work and despite a lot of communication with VMWare, they just gave up in the end. Pathetic.

Now I am plugging in a Touro external 3.0 drive and it is not being recognized. OS Win 7 cannot install the drivers. It works fine on standard Win 7 using the Driver: Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller but not under VMWare.

So frustrating, appreciate if someone has a fix suggestion for this

thanks
